I see myself a lot in him and the podcast episode where they kept calling him "Miserable Matt" made me think about myself a lot. So maybe a fluffy hurt/comfort fic where he just gets tired of it because it's something he can't help and reader helps him through it with his special interests? It's okay if not! Thank you 💞

“Miserable Matt” this and “Miserable Matt” that. It was almost sickening the way he was constantly the target of Nick and Chris’s jokes. Deep down, Matt knew his brothers didn’t really mean any harm, but that didn’t make his feelings any less hurt. He never purposely tried to be sad or depressing when they were filming, it was just kind of the way his natural personality was. 

Being autistic, his voice tended to have a flatter affect than most people’s. Even when he was filled with autistic joy, his voice rarely got louder or higher. Usually, his brothers were quite understanding of his disability, always standing up for Matt and making sure he was treated fairly, but then there were days like today, where they were filming an episode for Cut the Camera, and Nick and Chris just couldn’t stop the jokes from rolling off their tongues. 

“I dunno,” Matt said quietly, but with a smile, fidgeting with his hands. “I just like to be alone sometimes. It gives me the creative freedom that I don’t always get from other people, y’know?” 

“Oh here we go again,” Chris snorted. “Miserable Matt back at again with his depression poetry.”

“That’s not poetry.” Matt grumbled, trying to hide the hurt in his voice. 

The triplets were currently discussing where they got their video ideas from, and how they stayed motivated to make content, even when they didn’t feel like it. Of course Chris and Nick had ‘normal people’ answers, like going out with friends or going on vacation. But being autistic, Matt didn’t recharge that way. He preferred to be alone to gather his thoughts and reset his mind. So of course, that was made fun of.

“So, what do you guys think about the edits people make of you?” Nick asked. “Love or hate them?”

“It depends,” Chris shrugged. “Some of them make me think ‘Damn, I’m fine’, but others are kinda…weird. No offense, guys!” he threw his hands up quickly, smiling at the camera. 

“I like them. I think it’s sweet that someone takes time out of their day to edit me.” Matt smiled. 

“Yeah,” Nick groaned. “Cause yours are all sad and depressing and ‘poor baby Matt’ while a song from folklore plays in the background.”

“That is so not true.” Matt protested. 

“‘Poor Matt and his autism’ while some sad song plays in the background. You like it because it validates you.” Chris chuckled. 

“That’s not true!” Matt was starting to get teary eyed, but he couldn’t help it; he was sensitive. “Some of them are nice.”

“Miserable Matt’s gotta watch sad edits of himself to fulfill his aesthetic.” Nick laughed. 

All was silent for a moment, until Matt finally spoke, looking at his brothers with watery eyes. “Why are you guys so mean to me?”

“Matt, come on. We’re joking.” Chris rolled his eyes. 

“But it’s not a joke,” Matt whispered, avoiding their eyes. “You guys use me as the butt of the joke all the time. ‘Matt’s too quiet’, ‘Miserable Matt’, ‘Matt and his anxiety’. It’s annoying, okay?”

“It’s just a joke, Matt,” Nick tried to explain calmly. “We don’t mean any harm.”

“Do you? Because last time I checked, making fun of someone’s disability or mental health problems is harm.” 

“Don’t be like that, bro.” Chris tried to put a comforting, ‘olive branch’ hand on Matt’s shoulder. 

“No,” Matt stood up, throwing his headphones off. “I’m done. Finish recording without me.”

The boy quickly exited the room, leaving a stunned Nick and Chris in his wake. Matt didn’t usually lose his cool like that when he knew the camera was rolling, but he hadn’t been sleeping well lately and the last thing he wanted was a recording of him bordering on a meltdown. Even if it could be edited out, he really didn’t want that immortalized forever. They were embarrassing enough as it was. 

Matt retreated to his room, anxiously playing with the tangle that he kept in the pocket of his hoodie for when he needed a fidget toy. The calm, woodsy aesthetic of his bedroom relaxed him somewhat as he stepped inside his safe haven. It wasn’t enough, though. He needed someone who got it, who knew it was like to feel different. And so, he pulled out his phone, quickly texting you.

Matt: babe, can we go to the park?

You looked up from your book when Matt’s text came through. As an autistic couple, you had set up a ‘code word’ for when either one of you felt like they were on the verge of having an autistic meltdown, and that was Matt’s. You quickly gathered your things, speeding over to the triplets house as Matt sent you a flurry of texts, somewhat describing what had happened.

When you let yourself in with the key they had given you, Nick and Chris looked up, surprised by your entrance. “Where’s Matt?” You asked. 

“In his room.” Chris mumbled, not looking up from his phone. 

You didn’t have the energy, nor were you in the mood to deal with the boys right now, so you quickly pushed past them, hurrying up the stairs. “Can I come in, sweetie?” You asked when you reached Matt’s door, knocking softly. 

You were quite worried about the silence until your phone pinged with a text of mhm from Matt. You realized that meant that he was probably nonverbal at the moment, and you hastily let yourself into the dark room. Matt had drawn the curtains, turning on one small lamp with a soft, orange glow. Your boyfriend was huddled up under his weighted blanket, headphones on and softly stroking Mr. Wrinkleton’s fur. You let out a breath when you noticed that he seemed much more relaxed than when he had first texted you, but that didn’t stop you from missing the tear tracks on his cheeks. 

“Hi sweet boy.” You spelled into his palm as you softly set down on the bed beside him. 

Matt grabbed his communication cards off the nightstand, riffling through them for a moment, before he showed you the one that said ‘Can I have a hug?’. Without another word, you pulled your boyfriend into a deep pressure hug, knowing they were his favorites. They made his body feel perfectly aligned and usually helped calm him after a meltdown. After a moment, Matt pulled out of your grip, slipping his headphones off. 

“We don’t have to talk about it, hun. We’ll work it out with Nick and Chris later, okay? You just relax, baby,” You said gently. “Are you hungry, hun?”

Matt shook his head, grabbing your palm and spelling out ‘I just want you’ in your palm since he didn’t have a card for that. You smiled, placing a kiss on his cheek. This was one of your favorite parts about being a neurodivergent couple. You just got each other in a way that other people didn’t. You could sit in companionable silence and never feel awkward or bored. In your embrace of him, you noticed that Matt had slid a card towards you that read ‘Can we watch nature videos?’. 

One of Matt’s special interests and overall favorite things, was nature, but especially the forest and woodland animals. He could watch the soothing videos of the forest in its natural state for hours and not get bored, which had led you two to make a special card just for that when you were making his communication cards together. Your boy smiled as you stood up, grabbing the remote for his TV, before flicking it to one of Matt’s favorite, ten-hour-long videos of the forest and its animals on YouTube. 

“I love you, babe.” You told him as you both got comfortable under his large weighted blanket. 

‘I love you!!!!!’ Matt explained, showing you a card. 

The extra exclamation points had been at his insistence. He insisted that he loved you more than anyone else and needed you to know that. You couldn’t lie when you said that that had made you smile. You were each other’s first significant other, and Matt made you feel so completely special. Even now, as you laid here together, not speaking but cuddling as you watched videos of chipmunks and deer, you knew that Matt was your person.

Of all the current Devil’s Minion writers your playlist is the one I want to see. Do you have one? If not, are there particular songs you’ve been listening into to while you write? The vibe of your prose with them is hypnotizing like the short story about them in the books, it’s impressive, and does your music also inform this choice if at all?

Intense question, anon. Fourteen-year-old me fucking hyperventilated after reading the DM chapter in Queen of the Damned (me, on the floor of my bedroom at 3am because I don’t want to get caught reading this book, staring dazed at the ceiling; me, now, three weeks ago, sitting shellshocked on the sofa after watching S1 and S2 over two days as a binge; me, over two of those weeks following the binge, rereading the first half of the Chronicles and starting to see double, tilt the prism, see what happens when the narratives are overlaid and blurred), and it still feels like that. Likely my prose turning out the way it is in these stories is about 90% my giddy teenage self having access to my adult self’s writing experience to finally write this beloved pairing without fear of litigious letters (IYKYK, my fellow elder Millennials in the fandom). I don’t often love film and TV adaptations of my favorite books, but I adore this show. It’s flawlessly transformative; its improvements only make the resonances and overlaps that much more meaningful. No notes.

However, I have been listening to the same small handful of songs on repeat for 6 days as I write these pieces. I imagine they are affecting my sense of scansion at points; my writing life didn’t begin with fiction, it began with years of poetry before I ever tried prose. These tracks are as meaningful to me as poems as they are songs. It’s as good a starting point for a playlist as any; I’ll keep adding and put it together on Spotify at some point.

1. Vesuvius - Sufjan Stevens

This song was my entire first 72 hours of writing. I’m that Autistic weirdo who will listen to a single song on repeat for a month and think nothing of it. Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii being the nexus point of their love story from beginning to end in QotD, this is everything to me; I was never going to be able to write about the show incarnation of them without integrating this location and this imagery in the most reverent love letter I know how. This is why my series title for these stories is Caldera. Volcanic crater blowout if ever I saw one; I ran with it.

2. I Forget Where We Were - Ben Howard

Hello love, my invincible friend; hello, love, the thistle and the burr. For you, I have so many words—and I, I forget where we were. I haven’t known this song for all that long in the grand scheme, but it found me via Spotify shuffle in 2022 right after something awful happened. The longing in this song hinges on one of the lovers in it waking up to something they’ve forgotten about their relationship, something precious, and I’m thrilled to finally have a fandom application for it.

3. Make You Better - The Decemberists

No excuse for this one; it does a great job of speaking for itself. Front-man Colin Meloy is one of my all-time favorite songwriters, and his work is frequently dark, creepy, and/or gothic enough in flavor that I could find a few more.

4. Song to the Siren - Elisabeth Fraser & This Mortal Coil

On the floating shipless oceans

I did all my best to smile

This cover of Tim Buckley’s folk masterpiece completely transforms the vibe of the song, and in the kind of way you need for this pairing. This one is at responsible for the events and imagery in my “Still Life with Sunken Treasure.”

I don’t think the Arabic justified to the correct side when I copied this, but the translation is very easy to find. I don’t speak Arabic, but honestly the English translation is dull compared to the beauty of this language. I've made an observation over my years in fandom and so:

how correlated are neurodivergence and fandom?

this is under any kind of neurodivergence (any long term neurological difference from the societal "norm", and generally regarded as mental/neurological illness/disability)

(taking "engaging with fandom" as anything from/between creating gifs, edits, media-related videos (like amvs, compilations or video essays), parody songs, fanfiction, fanart, essays/theories about the media, and consuming a large amount/variety of fanworks (being any of the above), and there's probably more that I can't currently recall. it can be as simple as going out of your way to looking for fanmedia after consuming media)

(NOTE: this is not and should not be used as diagnostic criteria. this is me looking for a larger range of people to test a theory)

option 1: I am clinically diagnosed and engage in fandom

option 2: I am self/peer diagnosed and engage in fandom

a lot of people self diagnose when there can be difficulty getting an official diagnosis (waiting lists, costs, doctors who won't take them seriously or other disadvantages). these conclusions are generally come to after a lot of research and deliberation.

to add "peer diagnosis" is generally within the autism community where some autistic people can consider they are autistic after a group of friends (who may be diagnosed autistic) notice comparisons with their friend's behaviour and together they deliberate whether they meet the criteria, again with a lot of research. this may also exist with other neurodivergence but I've mostly seen it with autism

option 3: I think I might be but haven't properly looked into it and engaged with fandom

this is for the people who have seen several of those posts describing symptoms of disorders and have been able to relate to them but haven't properly looked into it for whatever reason

Headcanons

Doesn’t drink alcohol

Never has quite gotten used to using the fire pole

Likes to look at toys in stores and will fiddle with them curiously if given to him

If he ever became a parent he would absolutely go overboard buying the kid toys (as much for himself as for the kid)

Doesn’t like touching strangers, avoids handshakes

Only child. Come on, just look at him.

Really enjoys music and keeps up to date with current artists and songs, just not outgoing about it.

Is guilty of trying samples of his mold, spores and fungus, as a treat

Definitely autistic just undiagnosed in his time

Low contact with parents

Did not have a lot of friends as a child. Many parents actively kept their kids away from him

He hates baths. This is random I know. It’s just the vibe.

Couple headcanons

Enjoys brushing his girlfriend's hair.

The first time he brings his girlfriend to his apartment he probably spends like two-three hours showing her and explaining his collection of mold, spores and fungus.

Kind of obvious but museum dates are an absolute must with him.

Generally a good listener.

Would take a while to warm up to physical touch but after he does he loves it.

Not very touchy in public. He wouldn’t want to hold his girlfriend's hand walking down the street. But he is touchy in private.

Would make a lot of sly dirty jokes towards his girlfriend. Usually science jargon. The kind that make your eyes roll into the back of your skull.

Has a bad jealousy streak / becomes jealous easily. Stems from insecurity.

Does not personally want kids but would be willing to have them if his girlfriend / wife wanted to or would be step up if an accident happened

I'm so sorry about what happened to your plushy. I totally understand as I'm nineteen, almost twenty, and have my own comfort plush. I know I would be absolutely devastated if anything happened to her (Her name is Princess and she's a pink poodle :)). I can't imagine what it would be like for someone with Autism. I'm not nearly as educated on the spectrum or what it entails, but I know a disturbance like that can be especially hard. (Please take no offence to what I'm saying, I'm trying not to make this sound as bad as its coming out.)

Now, Time, contrary to how he looks, does know how to sew. He's not exceptional at it, but it's certainly passible. Sure, it's a little wonky, maybe crooked, but it's evident that he put a lot of effort into it. While it's a work in progress however, or after the initial incident, he remains a steady rock for you! If your okay with physical touch during this time, he's holding you to his chest and humming a soft tune under his breath while gently rocking back and forth. If not, he's counting breaths in front of you, tapping off his fingers to help you regulate.

Twilight cannot sew. Point, blank, period. His hands are too clumsy and his movements too rough for the thin, fragile string. However, he knows people who can. If your near Ordon, he's asking Ilia or Uli. If not, he'll take it to a tailor in the nearby village. If your not near a village, he's sucking up his ego and asking Legend. His pelt is always available if you need it, but so are his arms. Lemme tell you, he gives the best hugs. If you don't wanna hug him, that's fine, maybe Wolfie will make you feel better? If you don't want any contact, that's just as okay! Wolfie with sit with you until you feel better!

Sky is tricky because while he can play the harp/lyra/whatever that thing is, I can't say I see him being able to sew. His hands are too used to the thick sturdiness of wood or the gentle plucking of the strings. The repetitive motions confuse him and he just knots the string over and over again. He doesn't wait to ask Legend or Time however, and he'll even use tears to get what he wants. Like Twilight, his sail cloth is always available to you, and he also gives pretty good hugs. If you want your space, he's pulling out his latest project and working on it beside you, hoping the repetitive noises and motions help you ground yourself.

Now, Wars can't sew well either. But he can. He's not going to put your biggest comfort item at risk for that. He's not sucking up to Legend however. No, he'll instead hand over the needed dough to the nearest Tailor or, hell, even Time to get it done as quickly as possible. His scarf is also always available. It's a good way to ground yourself as he'll sit with one end, wrapping and intertwining it around his fingers and urging you to follow.

Legend, my lovely little rat, is the best at sewing hands down. He'll remain by your side, letting you take whatever comfort needed (Physical or otherwise), while he sews your comfort item back to its rightful state. He won't shoot any quips, nor even have a harsh tone with you and anyone who dares to even try and tease you are gifted with a dirty glare.

Wild cannot sew. Period. He'll also bribe Legend with food of some sort or some ancient tech to do it for him while keeping you distracted with food prep. You don't even have to do anything, but sit there and look pretty. If you want physical comfort, sucks for the rest of the chain because they are now on their own for dinner as you become priority number one.

Hyrule can sew! With resources as scarce as they are in his world, he had to learn to preserve what he had. Which included repairing his tunics, pants, boots, etc., etc.. So, he jumps at the opportunity to fix your comfort item. It's done pretty well too! Now, Hyrule probably uses some sort of Fairy magic to calm you, through touch or otherwise, and also hums to keep you grounded.

Four can also sew! He'd fix it up right away! In fact, he'd probably split to speed up the process. One of the colors, probably Vio, would sew the item easily and quickly while the others worked on comforting you. Cuddles? Done. You wanna hear them sing? Give them a song, darling. You just want your space to process your emotions? They're steering the others away. And then, when they combine to give you back the object, Four doesn't leave until he's certain your doing okay again. :)

Wind (This is entirely platonic) cannot sew. But, he's the youngest, so he can use puppy dog eyes and get Legend or Hyrule or Time to bend to his will and do it for him. He is then either distracting you with a game or adventure or small hike, or sitting with you and telling you all sorts of stories about his journey as a pirate.

Sage can sew! He learned after his original Champion's tunic had taken one too many hits and he refused to ask Natura (His Zelda) to fix it, or use the one she was dead set on him using. Of course, he could also use his hand to help, using Recall if the incident is recent enough. If it's not, he's more than happy to fix it himself. He's offering you his hand to take should you want it, using it to pull you into his lap if that's acceptable in the situation. If not, he's sitting with you. He's all too aware of what's it's like to be so...overstimulated, so he's not asking anything. Not humming or singing. Just sitting and acting like an anchor for you.

Fierce Deity can't sew. He can use powers to an extent, but he mostly has to use his scary dog privileges to get a tailor to fix it. He's built like a tank and has a core like a furnace though, so he's perfect for cuddles. If you wanna sob into his chest, he won't do anything but shield you from the view of others. He's another one to offer silent comfort rather than any form of conversation.

Bonus! First can sew! Not badly, nor too well, but it's average. He's humming lowly while fixing the object before giving it to you. He's brushing your knuckles before pressing a kiss to them, tapping your breaths along each bump when he pulls away. His scarf is also available to you. Whatever you need, darling.

Greetings! I am Elias, also known as Isa (they/he). I’m a disabled, neuroqueer writer of disabled, neuroqueer stories. I’d love to meet more writers, and I’m always happy to join tag games and receive asks.

Fantasy is my first and favourite genre, but I have also written contemporary fiction, sci-fi, and romance—and who knows what genres I will feel inspired to write next. Enby Witch Kid, a middle grade portal fantasy about a 12 year old kid who uses a spell to travel to a different world; drawing from my experience of being autistic and queer but only understanding it as ‘not fitting in’, and dreaming of escaping to a magical world

Nameless Romance, a t4t, autistic 4 autistic, ace 4 ace new adult romance novella about finding your own identity outside of society’s (and specifically parents’) expectations

Wankele machten (Unstable Powers), a fantasy adventure full of morally questionable characters I’m co-writing with my brother, in Dutch; it’s based on backstory for our DnD campaign

On pause:

Labyrinth, a multi-POV YA portal fantasy set in the same universe as Enby Witch Kid; I finished a first draft of this a few years ago, but I’ve since changed my mind about a lot of things and basically need to re-write the whole thing; and it makes more sense to publish my middle grade in this setting first, anyway

Ik wil alleen maar zwemmen/Ik ben Kikker (I only want to swim/I am Frog), a YA contemporary with a nonbinary autistic protagonist about friendship, romance, figuring out your whole life when you’re 17/18, and swimming; these working titles are a song reference and a children’s book reference, respectively

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson I don't know which volume, we owned a lot when I was growing up, but my dad would read them to me and my sister, and he would do voices. It made reading the hamster huey and the gooey kablooey comic very meta. The irony is I was very much a Susie growing up, and now I am nearly ideologically identical to Calvin. I did like the jokes, but also I just really liked Hobbes because he was a tiger.

Even if we don't win, this campaign has helped me in a HUGE way.

I suspect I have ADHD and am autistic (currently waiting for my assessments) and a big component of those for me is feeling VERY self conscious about basically everything I say and do.

This self consciousness mainly stems from school: ADHD brain would impulsively say stupid shit, the 'tism steps in to put up a strong mask, and then I get horrifically bullied by current friends, random students and on multiple occasions even teachers.

Now as an adult that trauma has lead to me never being able to speak up about anything, even things I'm passionate about. I'm passionate about the environment, Palestine, animal protection, Ukraine, and SO many other things but I never post about it for fear of doing the wrong thing.

Then I watched Our Flag Means Death. It IMMEDIATELY became my newest and strongest "special interest." So when they said it was cancelled, I didn't even think about it. Both sides of my brain where like, oh no, no masking today, son. We're gonna get your special interest back by any means necessary.

This *rarely* happens for me when both sides rally together, so I've been ACTIVE. I've been posting on X every ten minutes, I've sent emails every day for a week, I've commented on hbo posts, I've done ukulele covers of ofmd songs.

And now?? Today it's snowing and the bin men are out, I said "Stay warm guys, and thank you!" and they were so happy and replied "cheers!". I posted about Palestine the other day too, something I've been meaning to do but have felt so scared to do for ages. I posted about the environment, too.

at the moment, our current host is a cc!wilbur soot introject. one that formed in the soothouse era. He is uncomfortable using fanart as a faceclaim and tends to use actual photos of the cc as that is what he is more comfortable with - that's him, that's how he looks. (He knows he isn't the actual cc, dw).

His pk display name has his name, pronouns, and emoji combo. Pretty.. pretty standard shit, honestly. He has set up the base account to be an extension of his pk. NONE of this is... uncommon behavior that we've seen in the syscord communities we've been in.

However, in the last week alone, he has been legitimately compared to ADOLF HITLER!! By a singlet who also claimed that DID wasn't an illness and that most people are fakers. another singlet in that server asked if we could split an alter for fun and if we could do that for them. Oh. By the way? We're Jewish. Openly Jewish. We have spoken about being Jewish in that server before. That was known information. yet that person still chose to call us. That. I'm thankful that Wilbur, while hurt, finds it an ironic twist of fate as there is a song by wilbur soot called screensaver where there is a direct lyric "call me Hitler, no one will notice the fucking difference".

Another singlet in a different server asked if he could change his name and icon as it is upsetting other members. That, despite the fact he hasn't DONE anything personally, he is triggering people. Just by existing. Also, apparently, just because he exists, he might support the abusive actions.

Now! The system server, that's the worst bit. Another member told us to kill ourselves for having our base account icon be cc!wilbur. The server staff did NOTHING to the member who has on more than one occasion outright bullied people, actively calling people freaks and telling people to kill themselves.

However, we got banned as wilbur stated he was uncomfortable using fanart as a faceclaim and that it would be more damning for his mental health. He even explained why he had changed the base account, as it was giving us active joy during a really hard time in our current life. That we can not help having an autistic special interest. We also got fakeclaimed on the autism front.

thats.. jeez. people really need to understand that introjects aren't their source and do not owe anyone complete source separation. those singlets sound-- horrible. being an introject of wilbur soot is not the same as being ADOLF HITLER!?!? that singlet just sounds stupid as well, because DID is a real disorder that many people have. the other singlet also sounds very fucking stupid because like-- he isn't his source and if people are genuinely triggered by wilbur soot then they're the ones who should be managing that, they shouldn't expect wilbur to change for them, thats just unrealistic. wilbur soot is not the first person to use the name wilbur, actually his name isn't even wilbur. this kind of logic is so stupid, like are you gonna go tell every single evan out there to change their name just because one evan committed an atrocity? no, no you wont.

and that server is just horrible because WHAT. they just let a member go around bullying others and telling people to kill themselves??? thats just stupid. we honestly hate syscord sometimes, that place is so toxic and they struggle to treat systems like regular people despite the fact half of syscord is made by systems. its really just horrible. also the fake claiming-- like really?? whats even the point of that?? autistic people cannot control special interests ((as far as i am aware)). honestly as long as you aren't giving wilbur soot money by streaming his songs / watching his videos then i think its fine ((try stick to watching reuploads of his stuff if possible because then it might not give him money,, i hope?? i don't really know how youtube works sorry))
