Where are all the "slow" kids, the challenged kids, the burnouts from birth, the burden to have in class? Where are the autists who can't mask, who self harm, who are loud and can't stop stimming? The NDs with processing disorders, brain damage, brain fog? The ones with down syndrome, FAS, and other conditions that people treat like curses or defects. I hardly ever see them past 18 and I know they don't just dissolve once they become adults.

There’s just something about the fact that Zim reads as So Autistic. Like, both in the sense that it’s easy to map his experiences as an alien secretly living on earth to Autistic experiences:
A lack of understanding of social cues and conventions
Tumblr media
The Anxieties of feeling like you have to fit in some arbitrary social standards or Something Bad will happen
Tumblr media
Unusual sensory sensitivities
Tumblr media
Pickiness about food
Tumblr media
General alienation
Tumblr media
Even the whole ‘fully grown alien disguised as a human child but he’s so immature he basically acts like a child’ shtick can really resonate with a sort of Growing Up Autistic Feeling of… being both far too mature and childish for your age at the same time.
And also in the sense that even in the context of comparing him to other Irkens...
He has problems with volume control
Tumblr media
And possibly audio processing
Tumblr media
And definitely with emotional regulation
Tumblr media
And is extremely impulsive
Tumblr media
And uses very unusual wordings and turn-of-phrases
Tumblr media
And experiences sensory overloads.
Tumblr media
And these aren't even Alien Things. That's just Zim being Zim. So he can be read as a metaphor for being Autistic and also as just having the Irken Equivalent of Autism
AND ALSO
His human arch-enemy Dib also has SO MUCH AUTISM VIBES
Like being single-mindedly obsessed with a special interest from a young age
Tumblr media
(The part where his interests alienate him from his peers at school and he only finds companionship with an assortment of fellow weirdos of various ages he met online is something I find especially relatable for my own experiences)
Also having problems with reading social cues
Tumblr media
And a tendency to rant and info-dump
Tumblr media
AND ALSO ALSO
There’s also Gaz
Tumblr media
Who is ALSO single-mindedly obsessed with a singular subject
Tumblr media
And it’s something that always gives her something to do with her hands
Tumblr media
And avoid eye-contact
Tumblr media
Which she generally prefers to avoid
Tumblr media
And also seems to dislike any sort of physical touch
Tumblr media
And either expresses her emotions in a way that is terribly understated or overstated
Tumblr media
And it could also apply to their dad too, who’s been obsessed with science stuff from a young age
Tumblr media
And also doesn’t seem to do so well with social interactions
Tumblr media
Outside of just, like, me looking back at my Autistic-but-unaware-of-it middle-school ass imprinting on this show and being like “oh yeah, That Makes Sense” - it’s also kinda darkly hilarious how this show is basically about two autistic boys who just fucking hate each other to death (plus one of the boys' extremely autistic and extremely dysfunctional family). I mean, in the real world Autistic Solidarity is so incredibly important, obviously. But Invader Zim, a show that was everything to me as a lil autistic teenager is all about that sweet sweet Autistic Hostility.

I feel, like most children, I had a never-ending curiosity and a ravenous need to understand the world around me, but this was often punished as disobedience or disrespect in my family. They were often annoyed with me, maybe because they didn’t have the answers to my questions, or they didn’t want to go through the effort of explaining things in a way a child could understand.
As a result, I don’t know how to harness my curiosity/have much of a desire to harness my curiosity, and have a fear so deep of almost everything, including myself, that it is often completely paralyzing.

omggg, this owl might get some communication cards soon!!! yippeeee!
we went to an occupational therapist yesterday, and we were talking about how to navigate around/through verbal shutdowns, bouts of situational mutism, and general shutdowns/meltdowns. the ot mentioned that communication cards would be good because they’re portable and easy to use and understand, and we started on a plan to make some cards online and print them out and laminate them (they would be those small ones on a keychain). it would include how I’m feeling, saying something along the lines of “I can’t speak right now”, and stuff that I can do to calm down (I was also thinking of having a blank card so that I can write a custom message with a whiteboard pen) (for context, this would be used the most in school or public places in general).
finally, a way to navigate my disability!!! everyone in headspace is super happy about this too (especially princess and ty; they’re excited to help make the cards). any autistics or folks in general with communication cards, please leave suggestions below with stuff I can add to my list of cards, or just general tips of how we can effectively use them or any other things that we should know! /nf

gifs not mine ~ Through cuts and wounds it often flows, In whispers only blood bestows, A story etched in shades of red, Of every tear and word unsaid.

My Fics:
Animosity: A pre-scream - current scream fic! Slow updating, very gay stuilly. A tad bit inspired by Sharps Debaser but it's not really all that similar, I assure you.
Crimson Moon: Stu discovers he's a werewolf and Billy needs to help him figure out how to navigate. [Unfinished/no longer being updated. However, Cereal occasionally draws Werewolf Stu, that's the art that inspired this. Go check that out]
Fangs Of Insatiable Longing: Vampire Billy, Human Stu. Billy has to learn to navigate this world, Stu helps him, still follows the plot of Scream with a few added things. Slow updates.
Shut My Brain Off, But Keep Me Breathing: Submissive Billy Loomis with Dom Stu, this one is very self indulgent.
The Vexation: A crack ship fic with Doug Van Housen and Billy Loomis. Slow updates.
To The Edge, Until We All Get Off: Sub Top Stu with Dom bottom Billy. It's Stu's birthday and Billy gets him a present, not super long but really nice.
You Like It Rough, But I Like It Rougher: Pure Smut, lots of blood and knives in this one. Be safe reading this.
Winged Insect, Funeral Pyre: Prison fic au, Billy is in prison but it's more of a rehabilitaion centre, focuses on his relationship with his mind, and the stupidly cute CO he likes a little too much.
JOYRIDE: Stuilly Week day one, bodyswap au, also short but fluffy
"Partner In Time": Stuilly week day two, timeloop au, Billy gets stuck in a timeloop and everytime he dies, he wakes back up in the kitchen with Sidney and Stu
Sailor Song: Stuilly week day three, ghost au. Billy lives after the massacre, Stu doesn't.
Domesticated.: Stuilly week day four, a survivor modern au, set in 2024. Not long, but it's purely fluff
__
Up Coming Fics:
Malevolent Trinity: A soon-to-be Fic with Doug Van Housen + Stuilly. It will follow the plot of Scream, just with Doug added.
Unlikely Desires: A College Stuilly fic, in which Billy looks like Vincent from As Good As It Gets And Stu looks like like Tim LaFlour
Lost Years: A Team Loomis fic with Sam and Billy, Billy is alive and Sam kinda hates his guts but they get closer and become a good pair.
A Serpents' Song: A Fic sorta based around river dale, does include Stu.
__
Requests:
I do take Drabble requests! If anyone is ever feeling up for me to write them something I will work on it slowly but surely. On top of that, I am starting Commissions soon for my fics. So if anyone is also up for that, keep it in mind for later down the road.

hot take, but i really don’t think there’s anything wrong with acknowledging that someone is more disabled than you. where the nuance comes in, at least for me, is in how exactly you’re saying it.
for example, i’m not a huge fan of saying someone is more or less autistic than someone else- that’s not really how autism works. it can also be a harmful way to think about autism, as people considered to be less autistic will have their experiences invalidated while people considered to be more autistic will be intentionally overlooked or seen as some sort of lost cause (i’m not sure i’m phrasing it well, but it ties in a lot to how i feel about high/low functioning labels).
however, what is completely reasonable (and arguably, necessary) is to say is that another autistic person may be more disabled by their autism than i am by mine. that does not negate the fact that both of us are autistic, and it doesn’t invalidate the disability that i experience as a result of my autism, but it does leave room for the nuance of experience within autism.
with disability and disabled identity as a whole, this is not a bad way to think about things. recognizing that someone is more disabled than you doesn’t negate the fact that i am also disabled, but insisting that everyone is either disabled or not disabled completely ignores any marginalization beyond the marginalization i experience- which is really not a helpful way to conceptualize disability.
