Really not sure why I’ve got so many 19 year olds in my notes going “LMAO KAMALA HARRIS IS NOT A LEFTIST WHAT PLANET DO YOU LIVE ON”
“Leftist” just means “someone with left-wing politics.” Which Kamala Harris overall has. It does not mean “person who prays nightly to a portrait of Stalin and has a prep bunker for overthrowing the government.”
Like I’m sorry to break it to you all but most people in the real world are not as far on the left as basically everyone on this website. I don’t know if being on here has skewed your views of the political spectrum or what but someone can very much be a leftist without openly advocating for all cops to be hung drawn and quartered in the streets.
So no, Kamala Harris is not a centrist just because she has some opinions which you or I may personally find pretty sour. And also saying “she’s not a leftist she’s a liberal” is redundant because in the modern United States liberalism is generally accepted as a left-wing ideology. There’s a reason people on the right love using “liberal” as an insult.*
(And because so many of you apparently love to put words in my mouth and invent things to get mad at, no, I’m not fucking saying I disagree with far left politics and agree with everything Kamala Harris believes. Have a good night)
*Okay, the people who can’t read have found another way to “um actually” me and seem to think I believe liberals are on the left just because those on the right use it as an insult. Um. No.
Essentially, the world “liberal” in the United States often means something different depending on who is using it. Conservatives think liberals are left-wing. Liberals themselves tend to think they’re left-wing. And those further on the left think liberals aren’t left-wing enough and believe they’re centre-right. It also depends on which type of liberalism is being referred to: there is classical liberalism, traditional liberalism, modern liberalism, social liberalism, neoliberalism, economic liberalism, conservative liberalism, etc. Modern and social liberals are, by definition, left-wing, whereas the others tend to fall closer to the centre or somewhere on the right. The one thing uniting all forms of liberalism is the belief in equality.
However, when discussing liberalism as a whole from a definitive standpoint, the form that is widely accepted to be the one that most are referring to when they talk about liberals in the United States today is modern liberalism, which focuses on equality, personal autonomy and social justice. Modern liberals advocate for access to education, welfare and healthcare, as well as voting rights, reproductive rights and rights for LGBTQ people. In terms of economics, beliefs can differ but since the Obama administration, modern liberals generally believe in higher taxes for the wealthy. Additionally, contrary to the beliefs of those further on the left, modern liberals see state and government as essentials to maintain both equality and order, and see it as the state’s obligation to make sure everyone in society has equal opportunities. Classical liberals, however, believe that although the state is necessary and should exist, it should still have minimal involvement and intervention in the individual’s private actions and beliefs of no harm is being done. This belief that some form of state should exist what makes a lot of leftists detest liberals, since those further on the left commonly reject state and government entirely as opposed to the idea of a state with regulation.
If you apply what I have just listed to Kamala Harris, then yes, she is indeed a liberal, and she is also left-wing. She may not be as far left as many would prefer, and may even hold some beliefs many here might associate more with the centre or the right, but overall she is still both liberal and left-wing regardless. Incidentally, she is recently being described in the media as “the most liberal US senator” (whether that’s true is a separate conversation), and this is in the context of her being the most left-wing.
You can argue whether she’s left-wing “enough”, but the reality is she is more left-wing than the vast majority of major US politicians in history, especially when taking into consideration that the Overton window has shifted to mean that basically anything that doesn’t abide by the GOP is seen as liberal/left by many. Some Republicans are now advocating for Kamala Harris, and that doesn’t suddenly mean it’s because she’s become a fascist; they have simply decided that Donald Trump is just way too far right for them, and they are willing to put differences aside and advocate for someone who promises to try to undo at least some of the damage he has done. (Some people on here could learn from that, ironically.)
Anyway TLDR Kamala Harris is a liberal and that isn’t a bad thing when you consider the fact she follows the most left-wing form of liberalism and the normalisation of fascist ideals in the US means that a liberal government remains ideal for social progression. Also yes some things she said at the DNC and in the CNN interview gave me the ick but she’s still worlds above Donald Trump and you still need to vote for her to keep that genocidal maniac white supremacist far away from the White House. I’m going back to bed now

It's possible I misunderstood your post but dw cuz I'm speaking in good faith. Concerning your post about Rest in Power and oral history, I think it's more apt to compare the dismissal of oral history less with what's going on right now - as so much of it is being recorded and plastered all over social media - but rather with the Nakba and the dismissal of its history because it's oral and it is old and constantly denied. As recently as a few days ago, an American reporter went up on live television and denied the Nakba, stating it's something we simply 'think' happened to us. Anytime you see a Palestinian blog you'll see hate anons saying something along the lines of "The Nakba was fake, it never happened. We need another one."
Likewise Wikipedia, Twitter reader-provided context, white leftists, etc... denying the use of 'Rest In Power' prior to 2000, and the fact it was used to mourn the many assassinated members of the Black Panther party in the second half of the 20th century; simply because it wasn't written in a Columbia University ethnography but rather remembered in the collective memory of African-Americans. The very fact itself that Black activists and leaders were killed and assassinated by the establishment is not known. People treat 'Rest In Power' as though it's a new phenomenon just because it left containment. It's not new, simply new to the white gaze which cannot see past its fingertips. As new as Turtle Island was to them when they first saw it in 1492. Same thing with 'woke'. And acrylic nails. And AAVE in general.
The things my family has been through will never be written in a history book. It will never be considered legitimate testimony or recorded history by academia. We prize these memories far more than any exploitative institution ever could.
Ending this off with a link to a website called "Palestine remembered", which compiles lots and lots of information gathered both from old primary sources such as maps and logbooks and the like, as well as oral history from survivors of the Nakba and refugees. All village names can be found filed under specific central cities. For the hundreds of villages and towns erased off the map of Palestine, our elders have stories to tell:
https://www.palestineremembered.com/
admittedly I don't have much to add to what you said, I can say you didn't misinterpret my post at all, and thank you so much for your insight and the link!! I really appreciate it

Maybe this isn't the place to talk about it but I kinda just want to talk activism real quick. A some of you who follow me know I do most of my activism in real life I don't do as much of it online. That might be a flaw of mine and I am attempting it to figure out how to do activism in a way that can get a further reach online and that can incorporate more perspectives rather than just local ones especially considering I'm in a majority white American city. This being said there's not really a place to do activism properly online I feel like. Social media such as Tumblr or even Twitter are great places for mutual aid but they're not really good places to do actual activation I feel. The two main issues with any social media platform are 1) that they fail to be properly moderated in a way that can allow for coherent and real discussion, letting bad actors get away with far too much, and 2) a problem faced by any clear website is the fact that there's a lack of security especially when it comes to discussing extra legal solutions to problems.
With this being said the obvious solution feels like to take up to an onion and create a forum a potentially public for for leftist discussion. I do technically have the ability to do this but I don't have any skill and networking nor in defensive cyber security, so I don't really feel comfortable doing that and I've looked around and I don't think anything like this really exists. I have a job and in relatively comfortable financially all things considered so I theoretically could hire a cybersecurity specialist in order to protect the server but I don't particularly know how to do that and I don't know how comfortable I feel bringing money into what's supposed to be a public-free platform for discussion. I know a lot of cybersecurity people personally but they're all whiteheaded personally I don't know how much I trust a white hat to develop a site like this. Maybe there's another solution that I'm just an idiot and can't see but the whole point of this would be to be a more open dialogue so if any of y'all have any ideas on the matter whether it be from a cybersecurity perspective or a networking perspective or just an activism perspective please let me know.

Why am I leaving Tumblr?
OK, I'm done with all the stuff I was planning to do on here, and I said I would make a longer post explaining why I'm leaving. I don't owe anyone an explanation but I figured I would give a brief one (it turned out not so brief though).
I'm putting it under a read-more and giving the trigger warning now that I'm discussing bullying, suicide, self-harm, descriptions of mass violence, war, and various forms of bigotry.
It's very long. If your thought is "hell no I'm not reading all that shit" then you have one of two options: you can put me out of your mind and accept that you will never fully understand me and as such cannot really make judgments on who I am, or you can go apologize to your English teachers for being unable to read. (Or you can simply not read it but just, like, don't be a dick about what you assume I may have written.)
Tumblr is not good for my mental health. No social media is. I left Twitter years ago, and then Instagram, and then Tumblr. The only social media I really use is that I watch YouTube and I check Facebook for my handful of IRL friends and family on there.
I'm a member of the LGBT+ community and I have generally leftist politics. This means I was involved in the LGBT and leftist online communities on social media websites. They were probably the worst possible thing for my development as a lesbian and as an actually effective force for progressive change, and as a person with what is likely OCD, and who survived bullying (which, yes, is a serious issue and traumatic, fuck off). This website, combined with my own issues, and the community at Sarah Lawrence College, is what led me down a very dark path in college with trying to "prove I was a real lesbian and not a cringe freak who deserved bullying". The same for "trying to atone for my toxic, evil, problematic existence as a privileged person". Instead of embracing the beautiful complexities of queer identity and life, I made a new version of the closet to torture myself within. Instead of working to help my community with positive change, I stayed inside self-harming and planning suicide and refusing to seek help because I didn't deserve it because I was inherently marked with evil as a sinful member of the bourgeoisie, etc. etc.
I already, as a result of so many things, have issues where I am terrified to make mistakes, terrified to be seen as annoying or "bad". The culture on social media has made me so much more terrified to make any mistake, because mistakes = proof of Intentional Evil and apologies are just fake attempts to win back brownie points that I don't deserve. This attitude has hindered my recovery process so much. I think of it as like Statler and Waldorf, the hecklers from the Muppet Show, only instead of two old guys, it's two college students that I call Sarah and Lawrence (after my delightful fucking alma mater) who tell me that I should be first in line to the guillotine because I'm a teacher and teachers are "child cops" (I once read a post on here saying that "in a world with any real justice, teachers would be shot and dumped in mass graves", and I'd love to say that that was just one crazy outlier of a post) or that my food sensitivities are proof that I'm a toxic privileged demon because some people can't afford food so I should just die or whatever. Being on this website feeds Sarah and Lawrence with a thousand new hot takes they can use to torture me. And you know what, I don't deserve that. And if you think I deserve that, then you're wrong, and I don't care.
I do not like the form of leftism on this website. If this is what real leftism looks like- romanticizing gulags and guillotines, trying to figure out who the "Bad People" are and then sending them to those gulags and guillotines, carceral logic, cult-like communities- then feel free to call me a pathetic, spineless, centric, milquetoast liberal. My form of social justice looks like getting up every morning, driving to my job at a public high school, and teaching literacy and critical thinking to teenagers who need it. And when I come home, I rest and work on myself so I can learn more about the world I live in (about which I know woefully little, since I spent years educating myself on goddamn tumblr.edu instead of out of books and reputable news sources), and gain the energy to make my school community and larger community a safer, more inclusive place for everyone. If that's too fucking liberal for you, then I'll see you at the guillotine when the revolution comes and you're chopping my head off. Until then, leave me the fuck alone.
Now let's get to the actual part that may alienate me even from my friends. I hope this isn't the end of our friendships, and I hope you have the patience to read all of this before deciding to cut me off, and if you do decide to cut me off, I wish you all the best.
I am a Jew. Both my parents are Jewish. My mother is an Ashkenazi Jew whose parents narrowly escaped the Holocaust in Poland. My father is an Iranian Jew whose family had to escape Iran when he was eight because of the Revolution. Both sides of my family had been in those countries for as many centuries back as it is possible to trace. They were forced to escape or die. My maternal grandparents were both babies during the Holocaust, and their families took them to Russia. My maternal grandfather was shipped to a displaced persons camp and his family had no choice where they were taken. My maternal grandmother's family went back to Poland after the war, where they were treated so horrifically, due to being Jewish, that they chose to leave. My father's family, on the other hand, had been relatively prosperous in Iran (notwithstanding every couple of decades when a new regime would force them to go underground with their Judaism or be killed), but realized that the revolutionary government would likely mean death for them.
My maternal grandmother's family, my maternal grandfather's family, and my father's family all fled their countries of origin and went to the recently formed state of Israel. My mother and father grew up there. They met there, married, and moved to the United States, where I was born. They raised us as Jews. Many of my relatives on both sides, however, stayed in Israel and still live there.
As an adult, I do not think I am anywhere close to an expert on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but I have studied it a bit (I recommend Rashid Khalidi's The Hundred Years War on Palestine especially, and the work of Benny Morris). I certainly think I have more knowledge about it, based on what I've seen, than 95% of the fucking assholes on here posting about it. I'm not an expert on public policy or war, but my general opinion is that Israel was formed using settler-colonial tactics (which, to be clear, is bad), that the Palestinian refugee crisis never should have happened and that in a just world it would end and Palestinians would have right of return and right to safe and equal citizenship in their homeland, and that the current government of Israel is, I don't like saying the word evil (because I'm not a child watching a superhero cartoon) but they should be taken down, and their actions in Gaza are despicable.
HOWEVER. I do not think that every citizen of Israel is responsible for the crimes of its government. (Kind of like America is a settler colony but I don't think every single American citizen should be killed?) I do NOT fucking think that Israeli civilians deserve to be killed, bombed, tortured, or raped, because I do not think that any human deserves that, even "evil" ones, even if those actions are "resistance". I do not think that Jews in the diaspora deserve to be considered suspicious, to be interrogated for potential Zionism lurking beneath our skin, to be cast aside as problematic if we so much as suggest that we are frightened of antisemitism, to be told to shut up and suck it up if our synagogues and cultural centers are vandalized, threatened, shot up, because we deserve it for sharing heritage with Benjamin Netanyahu, and anyway it's sending a message and that's what revolution looks like, so maybe stop whining. That we need to stop whining about the Holocaust and that if any of us supports Israel or Zionism (which apparently means not wanting our family- our relatives who escaped MENA countries that no longer allow their Jewish citizens to live- to die horribly- apparently not cheering for the painful deaths of my family makes me a Zionist?), then maybe we deserve another Holocaust, and Hitler was right. That idk maybe there's something suspicious about the fact that Jews keep getting kicked out of countries, like maybe there's just something inherently vermin-like about us like idk if *I* kept getting oppressed I'd wonder if something was wrong with me, but idk I'm just a leftist who supports revolution and punch Nazis or whatever... That "NO ONE IS EVEN SAYING THAT, STOP WHINING" even though I have seen every one of those posts on this website, from nearly everyone I follow. (And the people who harassed my sister, who has been less frightened than I am over the past 7 months to admit she's Jewish on social media, and was told some truly vile personal things). (Oh, and the ten-year-old children I used to teach in Hebrew school, who got told "Hitler was right" on their TikTok accounts and got swastikas painted in their middle school in liberal New Jersey).
I am not just angry and frightened as a Jew, but as a teacher. Even those who don't spout antisemitism have not seemed to bother to educate themselves about the conflict before running to hit the reblog button because the post said that posting is the most important thing you can do, and I see y'all who don't reblog and that's really suspicious and if you don't reblog you must support genocide. If you studied the history of this conflict for five fucking seconds, you would not be saying shit like "We stand with Hamas", at least not if you give a shit about Palestinian rights. I was gonna write up a whole explanation of that but to be honest, while I hate the old Tumblr axiom "it's not my job to educate you! Google is free!" I honestly do stand by it in this case- I'm not gonna word these explanations well. I'll point you instead to the two authors I recommended above- Rashid Khalidi and Benny Morris. Khalidi is a Palestinian scholar and Morris is one of the Israeli "New Historians" who believes in telling the truth, not Israeli propaganda. I, on the other hand, am just some idiot who cares about things like Palestinian lives, Palestinian autonomy, Jewish lives, Jewish autonomy, Arab independence, fighting antisemitism, fighting Islamophobia, education, and the stupidest thing of all, according to this god-awful website: peace. So don't listen to me. But don't just listen to whatever Internet user is angriest.
And stop advocating for mass deaths and tortures. And stop just hitting the reblog button because you're being guilted into it. I am not saying that posting CAN'T be helpful. In my week of being back on this website briefly, I've seen people sharing verified links to sources to donate to Gazans in need, or support for solidarity movements between Israelis and Palestinians.* That's a great example of posting being helpful. And despite my personal distaste for political discussion on social media, I know there are people capable of doing it well- sharing news thoughtfully, discussing the best methods of dealing with it, etc. But seeing my own people being tossed into the fucking machine of "There's A Certain Heritage That Are All Either Oppressors Or On Thin Ice, and We Need To Guillotine Them, Or Else We're Oppressors Too And Should Die" has shown me even more clearly than before that something is deeply wrong about the way we approach social justice on social media.
(*yes, solidarity between Israelis and Palestinians. Israelis are not a monolithic oppressor block, and Palestinians are not required to lie down and just take their oppression until Americans save them with posting. They are all human beings and are allowed to work together to stop what I think is the true problem, the governments treating their lives as pawns.)
I don't know enough about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (Or quite honestly, a lot of the real-world issues I used to "just reblog" about). Chances are, neither do you. But I at least know that I will never give in to hatred and prejudice and thirst for violence. I will never sit back and be fine with the acts of the Israeli government and military simply because they share my heritage, and even with the terrible burden of knowing with more and more clarity every day how viciously the world, even my friends and allies, view my people. That will never excuse what Israel is doing, and I know that I disagree with many of my fellow Jews on this point. But I will also not be bullied into giving up my values- kindness, equality, peace, love for humanity- by somebody telling me that if I value nonviolence, if I don't believe in the dichotomy of "enemy race vs. good race", I must be a secret Zionist/neoliberal/etc, and thus an oppressor. I know who I really am and I know what my values are. If you don't like that, and we used to be friends, please do me the justice of at least letting me know before blocking me or whatnot.
I'm sorry this post was so long. I tend to ramble. I plan to log off. If you would like to contact me about this post, I suggest you don't unless we were already mutuals/friends and I gave you my contact anyway. If you aren't my mutual/friend but you truly must tell me something, I've created a blog called arielmagicesi.blogspot.com and there's one post on there and you can comment there.
FINAL THING:
Most of this post is me appealing as a leftist, a Jew, a human being. I'd like to appeal as a friend. I have been terrified, like constant-nightmares-and-panic-attacks-for-months terrified, of my friends turning on me if they found out all of this. I'm pretty sure there's at least one or two old friends of mine who, because they know that my parents grew up in Israel and I haven't disowned my parents, probably no longer want to be friends, and maybe even think of me as an enemy. If you do want to stop being friends with me because of this, please be direct. If you don't, just keep it in mind- not in a "develop an anxiety complex about Ariel's hurt feelings" way but in a "be careful how you talk about Jews on social media, if possible" way.

I've followed u for a super long time here and just logged in for the first time in years. ur content def influenced my ideas about marxism years ago. Just wondering if u think the general attitude towards Marxist ideas has shifted significantly among ppl who call themselves leftists on this site? Sorry if this isn't clear I've just had a couple polisci major friends who call themselves leftists say they totally reject marxism recently like they outright argued against marxist analysis of political/social issues and it confused me so much. Am I super out of touch now or something?
sorry just got home from work and saw this! well first of all i dont think this ever has been a very marxist site. besides a few circles of marxists and communist bloggers most peoples left wing politics on here are very broad and lack serious analysis. for a lot of people this is first and foremost the media enjoyer and media criticism website and many peoples politics are basically downstream of that and have very little to do with like real economics or political formations. like 'leftism' to people can just mean healthcare and higher minimum wage lol whihc has really nothing to do with marxism... i think while trump was still president more people will willing to associate themselves with marxists and communists despite many essentially being liberals at their core but now we got the cheeto out of the white house so its fine ig

From the piece:
“This dismissal – along with Hunter Biden’s conviction based on evidence taken from the laptop – is a vindication for Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Costello as well as all of the media outlets who broke the laptop story in 2020 and suffered orchestrated censorship by social media, the leftist mainstream media, and others who engaged in election interference,” Giuliani’s attorney Joe Sibley said in a statement to The Post.
And just a side note for those who follow my blog and have seen me try to share links to conservative podcasts from Rumble.com. I shared the above article from the NY Post, by copying the web address from the address bar in the browser while viewing the NY Post website. Then clicking the share link button on the Tumblr dashboard, and pasting in the link. Then click "insert" in the dialog box that pops up, which then includes the original headlines, by-lines and photos from the publication. Here, it worked flawlessly, and results in a useable link, where the entire graphic becomes a link to the original article. Try to share a conservative podcast from Rumble using the exact same procedure and, not so much...
Censorship is not Democracy, it's Fascism.

One of my mutuals reblogged a post about how bad faith actors on this website use this war to spread antisemitism and that this includes some big 'humor' bloggers. This was of course followed by this mutual reblogging various antisemitic posts from h*ritageposts and Co. They've also reblogged a bunch of 'western media is lying because they're controlled by the (((zionists)))' posts and 'you need to trust [random person on tiktok with no connection to the conflict] instead of the evil mainstream news sources'. On october 7th (BEFORE ISRAEL DID ANY SORT OF RESPONSE) they reblogged a vague 'leftists hate when the indigenous people fight for their rights' and posts for supporting palestine.
The dissonance... my dude, reblogging a 'hey let's not be antisemitic' while spreading blood libel (because when you talk about those evil bloodthirsty war-mongering (((zionists))) who just love killing babies we know what you're refering to, our continued survival depends on being able to sus out the people calling for our genocide). I feel betrayed at knowing that a person I considered a friend is at best feeling uncaring about the murder, rape, mutilation and torture of my people, and at worst, actively cheering for it. I am a leftist with all the 'correct' political opinions and yet I am so inherently born into 'sin' that I deserve a fate crueler than the death sentence, according to these people. I don't know if they truly hold these corrosive views on (((zionists))) or if they're reblogging these posts for the social credits (or the fear of people saying that by not posting all the new (not-yet-fact-checked) posts, they are taking part in a genocide of palestinians). But honestly, it doesn't make much of a difference in the larger scale of things; it doesn't matter if the nazi about to execute you genuinely believes that you are a pestilence upon the world or if he's just following orders (perhaps in the fear of repercussions if he disobeys them) - the result is the same either way.

Thoughts on US election
it’s concerning how normalized performing for social media is. and it’s gotten to the point that I don’t even people realize it because they’re performing for themselves not necessarily to be seen by others. cause how are yall so happy, ecstatic even, to cast your vote for a cop genocidaire but was just posting “Free Palestine” & “Justice for Sonya” ??? Literally publicly celebrating voting for such evil.
and it was plenty of *genuine* bipoc leftists that obviously understood our experience under trump & limitations of third party candidates and were clearly for voting for Harris. even sharing these ideas. but the vitriol yall had for them saying to not just give this woman the vote and push her to not be *as* evil was soo bizarre. Yall keep saying lesser evil and now your red line isn’t even genocide??? These people actually know the theory, practice it, and actually do things besides vote every 4 years, yet yall were so quick to dismiss them and antagonize them for trying to push the candidate *yall both want* to stop killing thousands of people???
I understanding voting in your best interest. I don’t understand sacrificing millions of lives for it and I don’t understand CELEBRATING & PRAISING people committing atrocities. Just vote. And Harris knows yall don’t care about any of the genocides which is why she had that entire performance telling people protesting HER administration murdering hundreds of thousands of people to stop speaking or someone else would continue the killing. ??? And yall celebrated that ??? Because if yall listened to people trying pressure her with their vote (the way it should be done if you are going to participate in this evil institution) to push her to change her evil policies, she probably would have changed them (or at least claimed to)
And do yall genuinely know her policies… because it’s giving AKA trump
Be the same people who don’t understand our struggles are all connected but want to post Malcolm X. The same people who don’t understand the IDF trains OUR police force. The people that murdered Sonya. The same people who fear monger worse every 4 years to get the democratic vote but don’t understand fascism has been here. The same people that post love, light, & biblical scriptures (I can’t take yall seriously lmaooo). Yall legitimize these evil institutions that only care about capital so much and jump to able to celebrate them. That’s really the part that’s getting me, like okay share your candidate, but to praise and celebrate and glorify a cop genocidaire?? Unconditionally??? No pressure to stop committing genocide, no pressure to change her policies (the few I’ve seen because there’s none on her website lmaooo) that resemble project 2025, just praise & glory for a genocidal lady.
And I hate this but I guess yall genuinely do not care unless it’s literally you or your family (and you’ll probably give a modicum of a fuck then, not enough to not be in service to the empire, eager to celebrate them)
Also (thought I was done lmaoo) yall don’t understand the merit in community. So busy trying to play the empires game in which you will always lose, you don’t see how you can stop playing it without destroying it first. Because people will need support once the empire falls anyway. How about build that community with everything you need first anyway?? Nvm that building sovereignty is how you can escape capitalism’s grip anyway.

i will say twitter is probably my better form of social media (i like to haul off and holler which is better on the say a bunch of stupid shit at unforgiving length website) but one thing about twitter was that i found myself following a bunch of leftists who would occasionally find out that nick cave is a boring free speech and art over practically all else lib and make fun of him :( for not being a twitter socialist i guess. i don’t know. anyway the point isn’t social media the point is that i’ve been a huge nick cave fan for like….. 13 years or so now and i know there are a whole lot of totally salient political critiques you can make of the dude (NOT valid: “he wrote songs about murdering women” btw) and i don’t think he’s like politically *incisive* or whatever but i do love the way the dude interacts with fans so much. like i think someone who was as politically vacuous as a lot of leftists (i do this too don’t get me wrong) think you must be to be on the political center-center-left would not behave as he does. and it’s always a treat to see him get a message from someone who’s like “look at this wokeism gone too far shit don’t you HATE IT?” and see him deliver 6-8 paragraphs just steamrolling them by taking them so very seriously and actually engaging with the shit they didn’t bother to. it’s just nice! it’s nice as well to see him respond with immense love and grace to other people who grieve and reach out to him. i’m not really given to idolization of famous people and tend to deliberately know as little as possible about them (like, within reason) but it’s just…. nice!
no real point to this just… nice!

that's because the origin of the word faggot and fascist are the same thing
the use of the word faggot refers to a bundle of sticks as well, and it was applied to gay people because they were rolled into carpets and burned alive
the modern context of faggot is one used derogatorily by fascists against queerfolk and transfolk and its antithesis of being reclaimed by the same people it's used against
given that the simpsons is intentionally designed to be a controversial show that challenges political norms and has consistently taken socialist stances (bar the now-passing era of corporate zombie simpsons), to assume that this scene is meant to promote fascism speaks to media illiteracy
i dunno about you, but i would much rather be a faggot than a fascist
if anything this simple joke should be seen as a call to action given fascists are extremely good at organizing and—to be blunt—leftists are kinda fucking bad at it
as an extremely potent example, there are 22 leftist parties in the US (albeit the supposedly castroist party is pro-israel, and i would not consider them leftist) whose memberships are so fractured that none of them could achieve ballot access in more than a handful of states, much less their home states
half of the membership of CPUSA comes from reddit, the big tent SPUSA party is so shit at advertising that they only have a few thousand members and there's been no media coverage of their presidential candidate, and the syncretic DSA is losing thousands of members annually
it would be very prudent for these 22 (or perhaps 21) parties to merge into a single party and work as one pan-leftist party with ideological blocs rather than infighting, and it would be especially prudent for dues not be a requirement for membership to open accessibility to the poor, as well as diverting a chunk of their donations towards actually advertising the party on youtube, social media websites, television, both AM and FM radio, and even possibly billboards
we have been so awful at organizing that it presents the illusion that leftists are a minority despite the vast majority of americans being disillusioned with the rightist democratic and republican parties, which would be more aptly described as neoliberal and fascist, respectively—albeit the democratic party is becoming more blatantly fascist and the are effectively one party exercising democratic centralism

Living Up to the "Leftist" Part of My Blog Title, or: Late Stage Capitalism Steals Utility from Us
TLDR: Marx was right. Capitalism's focus on profit maximizing has infiltrated everything, makes products worse, and makes us unhappy and more mistrustful of each other.
I hate how late stage capitalism incentivizes everyone to monetize everything.
I was trying to listen to an album I bought on my computer and Windows' modern Media Player doesn't let you skip tracks or play whole albums. Like, WTF? I have to go back to the legacy player to play music albums. Who would want to lose that feature? What does the new player even do that makes it worth using?
I know the legacy player is there and it's still free, but I wonder, then, what's the point of the shitty modern player? It seems like it would only drive you to either a better open-source or a better paid alternative.
So going back to the legacy player in all of its Windows 7-era glory reminded me of how we used to get extras like minesweeper or solitaire or that awesome pinball game in XP as part of our purchase. Now, the pinball game is gone, and you have to watch ads to play solitaire or pay a monthly subscription to avoid the ads they force on you, no way to just pay a finite amount for stuff.
Tumblr media
I miss Web 2.0 when there were like a million different websites and you could find so many different communities, when Google search worked and wasn't just a vector for search-engine-optimized ads.
I remember going to one of a million different Flash game websites and playing games that people just made for others to have fun. I miss going to websites that would do cool services for you, like letting you turn your handwriting into a computer font for free.
Now, I'm not saying there's any problem with wanting to make (or actually making) money from your work, of course not, but I think there is a problem with every interaction with another person or their work needing to be some kind of monetary exchange. I think Marx has a specific term for this, but it's been a minute since I've reviewed him.
Anyway, part of the reason that all changed was because of capitalism's drive for endless profit leading to corporations nickel-and-diming everything they can, like Adobe not letting you just buy and own Photoshop for one purchase anymore, or AAA game companies not allowing you to own everything in a video game after paying your $60 or $70 or whatever the sticker price is.
Along with that nickel-and-diming came squeezing more and more profit by paying workers less and less, making our jobs more precarious so we have to have a side hustle, we have to scrimp and save and we have to use social media to gather fans whose attention we can monetize through ad revenue and selling merchandise.
Tumblr media
Because our sense of security is so unstable, because so much has been robbed from us, because we have decaying--and in the U.S. basically nonexistent--social safety nets, we are constantly having to look out for scams, to ask each other for mutual aid, and being forced apart. Like Marx argued, capitalism is alienating: It alienates us from each other, it alienates us from ourselves, and it alienates us from the joy of creative labor. (I might be forgetting a fourth kind of alienation. Again, it's been a minute since I taught theory.)
In the past, like my childhood on the internet mentioned above, people did things--and they still do things--for free because we like making stuff, thinking up ideas, and showing off our stuff and sharing our ideas with each other. That's why social media is popular: we're a social species! Marx argued our species-being, our human nature, is to work: is to create, to labor more than what is necessary for the propagation of ourselves and our species. That is, we do more than just eat, sleep, and fuck. We draw, sing, write, dance, play, talk, make longwinded blog posts at 12:35 in the morning instead of sleeping, etc.
Tumblr media
People did this "free labor" more often in the past because people had a greater sense of security. They had this greater sense of security because their basic needs were being met. In Marxian terms, they were earning enough to meet their means of subsistence.
And with that greater sense of security, borne from having their base needs met, came more trust in broader society. It's less risky to trust people if your needs are secured. It's also easier to trust people won't scam you because there's less incentive to scam if they are secure.
But now that we see our institutions failing, crumbling around us while the state bends to the will of capital and ignores the will of the majority of the population (weed legalization? minimum wage increase?) people come to feel they can't trust those that are different from them. Social order and social bonds become weaker and, again as Marx predicted, capitalism is sowing the seeds of its own destruction.
I started writing this to complain about how Media Player sucks, and of course it's because of capitalism. I hope I did a good enough job of linking the two. It's not just an aphorism to say "capitalism caused it". I could go more into how capitalism uses the state to prop itself up and this merging of the state and business exacerbates fascism, but I'll save that for another post.

If you're a filthy little queer anar punk like me (or honestly, just a regular human that works too), you may like those tips and ideas and links :
Quit big social medias, they're made to be addictive so you stay on the app and it give them money. Also they rely on things that make you angry and hurt to make you stay on the app.
Instead join free open-source community-driven social medias and platforms instead (suggesting Fediverse). With a real moderation and instance made by people just like you. Double-check your instance before joining though !
Rediscover the web outside what you can get from the GAFAM with those linkrolls and search websites : • • • • •
Read this article about "laziness" and why the researcher think it actually doesn't exist. Good vibes and positivity at the end of the read guaranteed.
Do something you used to do as a kid. Play with toys, craft, climb to trees, sing out loud in your room, cook pastries, read your fav books again. For me it was crafting and I just customized the cover of my little sketchbook and it felt sooo good !
Check out this list of leftist zines !
Remember to take some time to go out. In the morning it helps a lot to start your day. And to open your windows to change the air inside.
Your friends for researches : Sci-Hub and 12ftLadder.
In you need to know that anarchy works, read this.
Learn something new with those explorable explanations. It's awesome !
Just go through the "hopepunk" hashtag here on Tumblr if you feel hopeless, hate yourself, are depressed, feel sad today... Honestly it just feel so good and I cried and smiled a lot scrolling through this and I feel so much better since I know this.
Remember to breathe slowly and unclench your body sweethearts !
Please if you have linkrolls or other awesome articles, websites etc... to share... well, share it in the comments and I'll add them ! Or reblog with your links, as you wish.
A lot of love for you all here. You're great and deserve some love and hugs !

Y'know, there are a lot of things I appreciate about Tumblr but maybe one of my favorite things is that it's entirely possible to create and curate a social media experience that's radically different from basically every other website. Everyone* is so excited and pleased about Bridget Guilty Gear and I think it's hard to overstate how much control I have over the things I'm exposed to on this site.
I always think about my experience here compared to reddit where most of the communities I would consider engaging with generally have a not-insignificant amount of shithead nazis and bigots, and the only way I can really control what I'm exposed to is by completely abandoning a subreddit.
We talk a lot of shit about leftist infighting on this site, and I think it's still fair to complain about it, but to a certain extent it is in fact possible to build the 'leftist echo chamber' where the people you engage with generally share your beliefs and while they may challenge and offend you occasionally, it's usually by way of a minor infraction that feels larger because you've come to see them as, if not a friend, then at least as someone that you're safe around.
But at the end of the day, even the disagreements and infighting I'm exposed to here are relatively minor in comparison because I can just delete someone out of my life forever if it comes to it. And like, I follow people whose politics I disagree with to a certain extent because I think it's valuable to have viewpoints that challenge mine, but here it's like, MLs and demsocs, as opposed to on reddit where you'll literally see deus vult shit.
Anyway, I'm just saying, I wish I cared about fighting games because guilty gear always looks so fucking good, and Bridget Guilty Gear is adorable, and I appreciate being able to inhabit a space that genuinely is positive and uplifting.
