While I am happy to talk and give advice about LGBTQIA+ issues, I am uncomfortable sharing my opinion on issues that I am still working to learn about, because I don't want to spread false information or be unintentionally hurtful. Also, since I hold a lot of privilege, there are certain topics that I would rather amplify the voices of others about, rather than taking up my own space.

Writing Tips:

Write a lot.

Don't worry about mistakes or editing. Just write a lot to get your ideas out. Practice makes better, and writing a lot will help you gain confidence. You don't have to post it anywhere of you don't want to!

2. Try microfics!

Microfics are a great way to practice writing certain ships, or just practice in general. They're also lovely for getting a feel of posting! They're low-pressure and low-commitment, which is lovely!

3. Find people to write with.

Whether it's people online or in person, find people to talk about writing and write with. It's very motivating and helps hold you accountable.

4. Be gentle with yourself!

This is supposed to be fun. Don't beat yourself up or be too hard on yourself.

5. Write down your ideas.

Ideas come at weird times. Write them down, because you'll forget them.

Good Omens Fanfic Friday (24 May 2024)

This week was an absolute treasure trove of amazing stories.

The Heart of the Forest (33K; Rated E)

Fairy Tale AU. This was so very sweet and fluffy with a blink-and-you'll-miss-it bit of angst.

Retired librarian Aziraphale moves into a small, isolated cottage deep in the forest with a strange history. He soon realises he's not alone in the woods; a presence watches him. But as he begins to befriend the stranger that lurks in the trees, Aziraphale comes to understand there's more to him than appearances suggest - and Aziraphale's own destiny may be tied to the mysterious creature with the golden eyes.

Clandestine Affairs (27K; Rated M)

Set in the 19th century, Aziraphale is tasked with getting his hands on The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. Heaven informs him that Hell has assigned an agent of their own, and to be on the lookout for the demon. Of course, Aziraphale can always spot a demon, though it would be easier to look if he wasn't so distracted by his attraction to his new red-haired valet.

As someone nearing the end of my own "they never met" AU, this one hit all the right notes. Immediate attraction. A touch of humor. Great action.

Buried Treasure (66K; Rated E) by @ineffable-toreshi

Human(ish) AU. A just-completed new one from IneffableToreshi. Aziraphale, an archaeologist, discovers a creature beneath his latest dig site that shouldn't exist. As he works to uncover the mystery, he finds himself falling deeper and deeper in love with the strange being. The ending to this one will probably surprise you.

Aziraphale Fell and his small team are working hard to uncover a mystery that has been discovered deep in the desert in a region with no known history of habitation...

...and they are having very little luck coming up with anything other than stone brick upon stone brick.

But as their sponsorships are dwindling and Aziraphale's hopes for the project are beginning to well and truly die, he literally falls right into the site's secret, and discovers something much, much more important than he could have ever imagined.

Meeting Hell Halfway (50K; Rated E)

Human AU/Aziraphale POV. Aziraphale has been tapped to lead the merger between Eden and Harvery-Edwards-Lincoln. He didn't anticipate having to endure the absolutely infuriating HEL lawyer, even if the man was devastatingly handsome. While it's not one of the angstiest stories I've ever read, Aziraphale has some rather serious problems to work through.

This Ghost Was Not On My Lease! (2.8K; Rated T)

Human AU. Crowley discovers his new flat is being haunted by the ghost of the bookseller who used to live there. This is a very light ghost story. Don't worry about this being one of those sad ones that leave you feeling torn apart at the end (looking at you, "in the house we remain"); it's zero angst. (The relationship tag says Aziraphale/Crowley, but it's really more of an Aziraphale & Crowley story).

Somehow their kids lived, so all humanity really needed to deal with is the Grimm without any evolutions on Salem's part. They're still a pain in the arse because the Grimm's strength and numbers are always a little bit less than humanity's.

Weiss is a famous pop star in Atlas - still lives in the Schnee Mansion. The Schnee Dust Company no longer existed in its full form; due to the more peaceful world, Atlas put a foot down on monopolies a couple years after Jacques took control and tried making the company as inhumane as possible to increase his profit margins. So he's currently wearing an orange jumpsuit. The family overall is much happier in his absence. Willow divorced the man and rumors say the most eligible bachelorette has been meeting someone clandestinely, drinking together. Which also happens to be part of the reason why Ruby is currently at Atlas lol.

Weiss unlocked her Glyphs but has been using it mostly as fairly expensive special effects. She's described as the fairy of atlas (or whatever name you all can come up with - I'm bad 8l ). Myrtenaster does exist as the girl is a fencer on the side.

As well known as Weiss is though, her musical career has stagnated. Too many artists and singers saturating the market, and she hasn't had any inspiration lately since she's always been insistent on making her own songs.

Penny is still developed by Atlasian military but upon realizing Pietro has no intention on making a clearly real girl fight against the enemies of human, Ironwood was like "okay you're right." So Penny doesn't have any of the weaponry and was allowed to live like a child and go to school. She doesn't quite know what she wants to do (maybe lead a sentient robot uprising /j) after schooling, but her dads are open to her doing anything. Her hobby is music and programming, and she's been following the Angel of Atlas since her debut. She is Weiss's self-proclaimed number one fan but more importantly she's her friend. If there is bad stuff about her friend on the internet, she will drown people with a troll army. To Weiss's dismay, a lot of her fans just follow her for the flame wars Penny would cause on her behalf. Lol

Online Penny is super different from offline penny.

"When logic and reason no longer work, what do we do?!"

"Flame them to death!! "

Ruby naturally is our walking, sometimes running, plot device. Wears a cape and a butterfly mask when she's actively streaming and has a button camera on her mask that doesn't work unless she physically wears the mask.

She learns about the Angel of Atlas and quickly falls in love with her work. Soon, super high places in Atlas are demonstrating large areas of grafiti depicting Weiss or a set of angel wings. Even the CCT tower gets the treatment.

Sooner or later, she declares herself the number one fan online which Penny takes offense to. Cue flame war between the two lol. Weiss had to log in to stop them from wrecking the local server with their war.

Essentially Ruby's chaos-loving followers versus Penny's troll army.

They eventually learn to not fight on Weiss's server. And instead find that holding flame wars on the sites and servers of Weiss's haters is a more productive thing to do. To the dismay of their leaders, eventually the trolls and chaos lovers become one happy family. The only thing that came out good was the chaos-lovers becoming Weiss fans…not for the music but because Weiss's name is now synonymous for troublesome.

One day, Ruby goes to Weiss online all "maybe ill meet you in the middle of the night. just pop in."

Weiss: "so you're telling me to hire more guards."

Ruby: "don't worry. They won't be able to separate us. I'll be there tonight. ^_~"

Penny: !!!

So that night Penny grabs a simplified form of Floating Array and installs it. She picks up a cat mask and uses FR to move past buildings like Spiderman.

Destination: weiss's home to protect her virtue

So back to the streamer / troll army AU:

Penny goes off to the Schnee Mansion and is spider-manning her way there while wearing a cat mask. mission? Protect her idol's virtue from the red-wearing weirdo.

She arrives. Ruby's already spray painting a set of wings on the mansion.

"I'll protect Weiss from your foul clutches!"

"Who are you again?"

"I am Weiss's number one fan!"

"No that's me! You're that troll girl! I'm going to beat you down."

"What did you say to me? I'll have you know that I graduated in top of my class in the Atlasian Military, and I've been in multiple search and destroy missions involving the Grimm, and I have 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in antipersonnel warfare, and I'm the top hand-to-hand specialist in all of Atlas. You are ju-"

Ruby interrupts her with a paint bomb.

Penny is rainbow-colored now.

Cue angry shrieking and then awkward fighting because neither girl has fought before. Meanwhile….

Whitley: hello police ? There's two crazy girls fighting on our lawn…and there's paint and glitter everywhere

Weiss wakes up from all the racket. She sees the paint and glitter all over the house and lawn, realizes who the two probably are, and angrily pulls out a training epee. She runs out yelling. (edited)

Before long, she's sitting on top of the two because unlike Ruby and Penny she's had formal training. Her eye is twitching from the arts and crafts disaster that's become her home. She turns on the full force of her bossiness.

"Wei-"

"Salu-"

"I've been chauffering my mom and her infuriating date all day today. Then I had to deal with my manager and why i haven't come up with more songs. And then you both come wake me up at one in the morning, turning my entire home into a preschool art project! You WILL clean up the mess you made or so help me god…"

She just screams out in anger, making the other two hug each other in fear. After she stalks off, the other two notice their position and quickly pull away from each other. They then grudgingly work together to clean the lawn and house and repair the damage they made.

The police do arrive but are turned around by Klein who tells them everything is under control.

After they're mostly done, Klein invites the two to stay at the manor, since it's late and not safe - though for him, it's an excuse to have Weiss interact with kids her age in a non-backstabby-rival-singer way. Naturally, the two excitedly accept.

Back to troll Penny, singer Weiss, streaming prankster Ruby:

Klein invites the uninvited guests to stay the night after they clean up the mess they made of the Schnee mansion.

The next day, Ruby and Penny were unable to get any sleep, mostly cause they are all "omg I'm sleeping in my idol's home." So come morning, they're both exhausted and meet each other in the hall. Penny and Ruby share a pleased smile behind their masks before they recall they're supposed to be hostile to each other, cause both of them consider themselves as Weiss's number one fan.

Klein sees them and leads them to the dining room for breakfast, where they find a delicious spread. Whitley's already there, kinda wondering why the crazy girls he called the police on earlier are eating here, but given Klein invited them, they couldnt be that dangerous.

As all three of them eat, Weiss comes in mostly in pajamas and some bedhead, clearly dazed and drowsy. For one, she doesnt even notice the pair on the table. Whitley looks at Weiss and the two girls with an amused face. Ruby and Penny don't even know what to say as Weiss just goes about her business, mostly like a zombie with Klein helpfully putting food on her plate and most importantly an industrial-sized mug of coffee. She just eats and drinks what's on her plate before going back the way she came.

Whitley watches on with amused anticipation.

The girls are wondering if she's deliberately ignoring them when they see her collide with the wall beside the doorway. Before they could ask if she's okay, Weiss just dazedly steps back and walks through the hall instead.

Whitley's giggling, and when the girls look at him, he just says, "every morning. Like clockwork."

Je sors de ma lecture des Grandes oubliées avec le cerveau en compote et un goût d’injustice. Je connaissais Titou Lecocq de nom, je défendais déjà ses ouvrages à la librairie et encore plus celui-ci, et j’ai enfin pris le temps de le lire. Je sais pas pourquoi, je pensais avoir compris qu’on allait nous parler des femmes oubliées, genre les inventeuses, les autrices, etc. (Désolée !) En fait, pas du tout, enfin, si, mais pas tellement. C’est l’histoire des femmes. Point.

Des femmes dans l’Histoire. Vous saviez que les femmes pendant la Préhistoire n’étaient pas enfermées dans les grottes avec l’éducation des marmots, mais qu’elles chassaient, cueillaient et peignaient aussi ? Et que tout le monde s’occupait des enfants ? Encore un autre exemple hyper parlant (pour moi), désolée l’extrait est un peu long :

Ensuite, je cite sa fiche biographique sur le site de l'ordre du Mérite : ‘‘Pour sauver un soldat anglais pris sous la mitraille, elle n'hésite pas à sortir de chez elle, armée de grenades, et parvient, avec l'aide de quelques soldats anglais, à mettre hors d'état de nuire deux soldats alle-mands, embusqués dans une maison voisine. Un peu plus tard, alors que la maison est cernée, elle se saisit d'un révol ver et abat à travers la porte deux fantassins ennemis.’’ »

Comment diable est-ce qu’après avoir passé 15 ans de ma vie à vivre juste à côté de Loos je n’entends parler de cette femme que maintenant ?????

Bon, je m’arrête là avec les exemples, mais vous voyez le topo : Titiou Lecocq nous invite à nous pencher et à redécouvrir l’Histoire des femmes, et comment on les a invisibilisées, réduites au silence et oubliées. Le tout en s’appuyant sur des exemples concrets et des travaux d’historiennes et de quelques historiens. C’est hyper hyper intéressant, j’ai appris énormément de choses et mon cerveau a surchauffé. J’ai adoré. J’ai mis du temps à me pencher dessus, mais alors je ne regrette absolument pas ! J’avais aussi peur que, étant un ouvrage de sciences-humaines, ce soit incompréhensible et/ou compliqué à lire comme des articles universitaires, mais pas du tout ! C’est hyper fluide, très bien écrit, bien construit, et abordé presque comme une histoire. C’est un grand coup de cœur inattendu ! Et maintenant j’ai très envie de lire son dernier ouvrage Le couple et l’argent 👀

Impenitent will also be operating as an AU site, presenting a variety of opportunities for the originality of the site as well as to inspire character creativity.

1955.  A  decade  has  passed  since  the  conclusion  of  the  Second  World  War,  yet  while  the  Muggle  World  has  managed  to  develop  in  great  strides  throughout  those  ten  years,  the  Wizarding  World  has  been  further  plunged  into  an  all  consuming  darkness.  1945  marked  the  defeat  of  the  intercontinental  dark  wizard,  Gellert  Grindelwald,  and  for  a  brief  moment,  the  fog  of  terror  had  dissipated  from  the  atmosphere  across  Western  Europe,  parting  the  haze  of  a  warring  theatre  and  permitting  Muggleborns,  Half  Bloods  and  those  with  creature  blood  to  cast  hopeful  glances  upon  a  future  that  might  bear  witness  more  of  their  cardinal  rights  recognized  and  upheld  by  the  Ministry  of  Magic.  But  while  the  great  evil  that  had  been  Grindelwald  now  rotted  in  a  prison  cell  in  Nurmengard,  his  sympathizers  and  sycophants  remained  unbroken  and  unbridled,  free  in  the  world  to  spread  sinful  beliefs  to  their  children  and  to  sow  dissent  in  the  ministries  of  magic  to  further  curtail  the  liberties  of  those  that  were  deemed  lesser.  Like  many  followers,  however,  these  Purists  had  achieved  very  little  until  an  unassuming  shopboy  from  the  gutters  of  Knockturn  Alley  charmed  his  way  through  schoolmates,  professors  and  politicians  alike,  harboring  what  many  would  one  day  consider  immoral  and  wicked  intent.

An  orphan  boy  from  London,  Tom  Riddle  had  always  shown  an  inclination  for  the  clandestine,  even  before  his  magic  had  manifested  in  ways  that  terrorized  his  fellow  foundlings  and  caretakers.  So  when  Albus  Dumbledore  appeared  at  the  steps  of  Wool’s  Orphanage  to  personally  present  an  invitation  to  a  school  in  Scotland,  the  matron  and  children  did  not  bar  his  leave.  Hogwarts  failed  to  educate  him  in  the  art  of  restraint,  instead  feeding  the  starving  stray  his  first  tastes  of  what  power  could  be  if  properly  honed.  Loathe  to  return  to  the  orphanage  during  the  height  of  the  war  —  perhaps  igniting  the  catalyst  of  his  fear  of  death  —  caused  the  youth  to  trace  back  his  lineage  to  the  ancient  House  of  Gaunt,  descendants  of  Salazar  Slytherin.  Eager  to  learn  of  his  ancestry,  the  boy  had  visited  his  uncle,  Morfin  Gaunt,  unearthing  truths  behind  his  conception,  the  result  of  which  led  him  to  murder  his  Muggle  father  and  grandfather,  and  abscond  with  a  priceless  family  heirloom.  Using  the  deaths  of  his  family  to  harness  insidious  wizardry,  he  created  his  first  Horcrux,  embedding  the  trauma  of  their  demise  alongside  a  piece  of  his  soul  into  Marvolo  Gaunt’s  ring.  It  does  not  take  long  for  him  to  fabricate  a  second,  the  energy  exuding  pervading  his  aura  attracting  fellow  Purists  and  power - seekers  through  his  reckless  abandon.  Wielding  the  gifts  he  had  gained  from  Salazar  Slytherin  to  bring  grand  loss  of  life,  he  marches  forth,  eliminating  Myrtle  Warren  and  imparting  a  subsequent  piece  of  himself  within  a  diary,  his  mind  littered  with  ideations  of  a  glorious  world  where  he  would  reign  supreme  and  everlasting.

Spurned  by  Albus  Dumbledore  and  faculty  refusal  in  which  would  obstruct  his  motion  to  claim  a  professor’s  post,  Tom  Riddle  consigns  himself  to  a  brief  stint  at  Borgin  and  Burkes,  where  as  he  labors,  salt  permeates  and  festers  an  infectious  wound.  It  is  here  that  he  is  greeted  by  Madam  Hepzibah  Smith,  avid  patron  and  self  proclaimed  descendant  of  Helga  Hufflepuff.  A  woman  seemingly  gluttoned  with  affluence,  she  boasts  of  priceless  possessions,  unwittingly  securing  her  unfortunate  fate  throughout  a  barrage  of  gloating  conversement  where  Tom’s  attentive  temperament  lies  coiled  —  a  serpent  lying  in  wait,  fangs  poised  to  strike.  A  potent  toxin  will  soon  pass  her  lips,  its  venom  stilling  the  thrum  of  her  heart  so  that  her  corpse  can  be  thieved  of  both  Hufflepuff’s  cup  and  Slytherin’s  locket.  Framing  yet  another  innocent,  isolated  being,  the  third  Horcrux  is  molded  by  his  ceaseless  corruption,  and  he  vanishes  to  further  hunt  artefacts  to  defile,  leaving  in  his  treacherous  wake  virulent  acolytes  to  carry  on  his  bidding.

Now,  Tom  Riddle  methodically  maneuvers  taut  strings,  operating  from  the  shadows  as  he  begins  to  petrify  the  Wizarding  World,  his  sinister  plots  to  execute  all  who  oppose  him  in  pursuit  of  blood  purification  and  wizarding  rule  helmed  by  his  most  trusted  circle  —  The  Knights  of  Walpurgis  —  alongside  his  lethal  militia  of  Death  Eaters.  As  the  skies  are  cast  ever  darker  across  Great  Britain,  The  Ministry  remains  ignorant  to  the  rise  of  malignant  forces,  instead  fixating  on  their  own  preferred  transgressions  as  rumors  of  both  Creature  and  Muggle  intolerance  mark  them  unfavorable.  Those  of  creature  blood  —  most  notably,  Werewolves  —  are  now  the  bias  targets  of  harsh  injustice,  their  existence  perceived  as  a  threat  to  the  welfare  of  wizarding  communities  due  to  what  is  deemed  as  beastly  nature.  Met  with  this  imbalance,  leaders  of  these  respective  species  are  presented  with  two  options:  sign  a  registry  to  document  their  so  called  afflictions,  or  revolt  and  face  imprisonment  —  or  worse.  In  light  of  The  Ministry’s  shortcomings  in  regard  to  the  threat  of  an  ascending  Dark  Lord  and  impending  insurgence,  Albus  Dumbledore  forges  a  regime  of  talented  individuals  known  as  The  Ordinem  in  an  effort  to  better  combat  the  telltale  signs  of  the  war  to  come  where  the  wizarding  government  would  not  act.  Lines  have  begun  to  be  drawn,  both  morality  and  neutrality  blurred  as  justice  is  taken  into  the  grasps  of  opposing  views,  all  sides  contending  for  control  as  the  Wizarding  World  is  propelled  toward  ruination.

Lux et Tenebrae is an au Marauders Era roleplay set in 1985, a year after the First Wizarding War has drawn to a close, witches and wizards seek balance as they traverse a new age of fallacious peace and political intrigue. But echoes of the Dark Lord continue to haunt the air, and his life not wholly dispelled, lurks in the shadows, gathering strength to rise again.

PLOTLINE

1983. Terror and insurmountable loss carry through another year, the Ministry’s shortcomings long evident in the failure to quell the threat of an ascending Dark Lord and his impending insurgence. The Wizarding World in ruin, he is close to conquest, helming as its tyrannical victor and laying waste to all who oppose him. The Order alone is not enough to keep errant forces at bay nor are they powerful enough to breach the Dark Lord’s seemingly unnatural immortality. As the year stretches on, a great yawn of fatigued time, the tally of fallen wix reaches a new sum that is too costly to count. Near the end when all is thought lost, as the skies are cast ever darker across Great Britain, hope manifests itself within an unexpected source — one of Voldemort’s own. A Death Eeater, Regulus Black, uncovers a clandestine secret that lends to the candour behind Tom Riddle’s impenetrable defence. Disillusioned for a prolonged swell of time, his covert efforts lead to unveiling a Horcrux, a wicked mass of dreadful magic bound to Salazar Slytherin’s locket. 1984. The tides begin to turn, and the Order gains their first foothold in a war the world had begun to deem lost. The Dark Lord’s lethal militia of Death Eaters begins to break off as he becomes debilitated in the wake of the locket’s destruction, fortuitously annihilated by the research of its defected thief. It is here that the Order, led by Albus Dumbledore, overcome Voldemort and his reign in a final battle that bears witness to his physical dissipation. A body that sheds tendrils of fractured shade, drifting into the night. With news of the Dark Lord’s demise boldly headlining The Daily Prophet, Millicent Bagnold, the newly minted Minister of Magic, seeks to herald in an era of peace with the conclusion of the Death Eater trials. It is found that many of Voldemort’s followers had fled his ranks post the Horcrux’s eradication, but those that the Aurors can capture and condemn are seen to the depths of Azkaban. And some, in more peculiar cases, are pardoned with alternate deals, members of their tribunals perhaps bearing lasting ties to the Dark Lord’s whims. Though Millicent garners much approval throughout the Wizarding World by the end of her first year in office, there are several who fought and bled during the war that believe she is too quick to dismiss the potential of enduring threats. 1985. For many, the passage of time does not mend the persisting wounds of their buried dead. The pain of memory is a stain that cannot be scrubbed clean, and trepidation stalks even the bravest of wizard kind who struggle to reintegrate into daily life after the ferocity of such vast conflict. Even a year post the contest, a volley of trauma clouds heavy above the lives of survivors. And they are right to dwell on the past, as the Dark Lord remains, not entirely whole but able, methodically manoeuvring taut strings as he operates in his weakened state from the shadows, calling upon his sympathisers and sycophants that have remained unbroken and unbridled to once again aid in his pursuit of blood purification and wizarding rule. His soul still split into four pieces, his form strengthens, ready to rise again.

CANON CHANGES

Millicent Bagnold succeeded Harold Minchum as Minister of Magic at the terminal stage of the First Wizarding War in early 1984. Minchum was unsuccessful in containing Voldemort’s rise to power and rumoured to have perhaps even been in league with him, leading to Bagnold’s swift ministry interference. She gained further universal approval post the successful Death Eater trials.

There are four Horcruxes remaining as not all have canonly been created by the starting time of the roleplay. With the locket destroyed, Harry’s birth having not taken place and Nagini not turned into a Horcrux until 1994, the only remaining items are Hufflepuff’s cup, Ravenclaw’s diadem, Tom Riddle’s diary and Marvolo Gaunt’s ring.

The Wizarding Wireless Network, or WWN, has a pirate radio channel still active from the First Wizarding War in which most Order members and Order leaning individuals used to keep track of Death Eater movements and other related issues ( think of Potterwatch for an example ). The station is only accessible by those with the correct password and accompanied wand movement which changes weekly.

Those with Dark Marks will find that the mark has faded in colour, but has not vanished or scarred over, lending them to believe amongst one another that he is not entirely gone from the world.

« Le sceau de l’Esprit »

« Le sceau de l’Esprit » Prédication par Andrew Rossiter à Monflanquin le 11 août 2024 Ephésiens 4.30-5.2, Jean 6.41-51

Par une étrange coincidence ces deux passages de la Bible ont en commun un même endroit. Selon la tradition, l’évangéliste Jean se trouve à Éphèse vers la fin du premier siècle, c’est là où il écrit son Evangile. Il fait partie de la deuxième ou troisième génération de chrétiens. Paul est en prison, et c'est encore la tradition qui nous dit qu'il était à Rome, donc autour des années 60-62. Une cinquantaine d’années séparent les deux textes de ce matin.

La lettre de Paul est destinée aux premiers chrétiens de cette ville et aux villes dans la même région. Il écrit pour soutenir et aider ces jeunes croyants à se former et à developper leur communauté, il veut leur donner de l’espérance. Jean, dans son Evangile, a une vision plus large. L’Evangile de Jean n’est pas destiné à être lu par un groupe de personnes, mais s’adresse à tout le monde. Lui, il veut persuader les gens de croire en Jésus-Christ.

Nous pouvons imaginer que la communauté d’Éphèse au temps de Jean était reconnaissant de la foi et l’engagement de leurs grand-parents, après tout c’était eux qui ont entendu la première lecture de la lettre de Paul. Et maintenant leurs petits-enfants participent à la rédaction du quatrième Evangile.

Nous ne savons pas comment ces communautés ont développé entre les années 50 et la fin du premier siècle. Mais nous sommes certains qu’à l’époque de Paul les groupes de maisons était petits, peut-être pas plus que quelques centaines de personnes en total à travers toute la région. Encore plus petit que notre EPUdF aujourd’hui.

Le christianisme était extrêmement minoritaire, nouveau et parfois clandestin, ils se réunissaient dans les maisons privées. Il n’y avait pas encore une organisation centrale, pas de synodes, pas d’ordination, pas de Conseil Presbytéral, même pas de Site Internet. Son impact se mesurait dans le changement de vie des individus qui ont compris qu’un nouveau corps était en train de naître. Un corps où l’individu était incorporé dans un ensemble, quelque soit son passé, il avait désormais sa place.

Ce corps était formé et constitué sur la mort et la resurrection de Jésus-Christ, celui qui se rend présent dans la vie de cette communauté. La lettre explique ce processus, et maintenant son auteur veut décrire comment cette communauté peut se comporter. Au premier regard nous pouvons penser que les chapitres 4 et 5 contient un code moral pour nous dire comment vivre l’Evangile. Il permet aussi de juger, à partir de leurs comportements, si les membres sont sérieux dans leur engagement de foi.

«C’est quand même scandaleux, toutes ces affaires de pédophilie dans l’Eglise, et encore pire quand les autorités essayent de les cacher».

«C’est inadmissible tous ces pasteurs qui se divorcent pour un oui ou pour un non, comme on change sa chemise. Il faut qu’ils montrent l’exemple tout de même».

«Et avez-vous entendu parler de ce membre du Conseil Presbytéral qui prélevait dans la collecte avant de la passer au trésorier?»

«Et que dire de ces rumeurs où certaines paroisses donnent discrètement une enveloppe de billets à la fin du mois au pasteur, pour acheter un nouveau costume!»

Oui, nous aussi, nous sommes confrontés par les exigences éthiques de notre foi. Nos comportements trahissent notre attachement à la foi. C’est bien plus facile de dire ce que nous croyons que de mettre en pratique nos croyances. Et nous pouvons lire ces lignes de Paul comme une liste d’injunctions: de ne pas mentir, ou voler ou se mettre en colère. Mais cette liste est le reflet de qui nous sommes, elle n’est pas du tout une exigence de ce que nous devrions faire afin de devenir croyant. C'est la question en éthiques de comment aller de ce qui est à ce qui devrait être (voir note en bas de texte).

En lisant les courts passages de cette lettre nous perdons de vue la vision globale de Paul. Si vous lisez la lettre d’un trait, vous verrez que la première partie nous dit comment nous avons passé d’une réalité existante à une réalité nouvelle. Avant, nous étions des étrangers pour Dieu, maintenant nous sommes les citoyens de son Royaume. Avant nous étions loins, maintenant nous avons notre place. La différence est capitale et le choix nous appartient: de vivre comme des éloignés de l’amour de Dieu ou d’accepter cet amour dans nos vies.

Bien sûr les difficultés ne sont pas balayées d’un coup. Je suis attristé et déçu par certaines comportements que je vois dans la vie de l’Eglise: 

La colère qui déborde, non pas la colère en elle-même, mais cette colère qui cherche à détruire l’autre.

Les mensonges qui font que l’autre devient un objet pour moi.

Les ragots qui sont chuchotés derrière le dos parce que nous n’avons pas le courage de dire en face la vérité en amour.

Les petits jeux de pouvoir qui cherchent à mettre l'autre à sa place.

Le refus de pardonner afin de maintenir l’autre cloisonné dans son erreur.

Et je peux dire si c’est ça l’Eglise, je serais mieux de m’en aller parce que ce n’est pas tellement différent dehors.

C’est ici que les deux lectures se rejoignent. 

Jean déclare que Jésus déclare, «Je suis le pain qui donne la vie au monde». Ce pain est inaccessible pour celles et ceux qui veulent grimper jusqu’au ciel pour le prendre. Le vrai pain est celui qui descend du ciel et vient à notre rencontre. Et ce pain n’est pas une chose ou une possession (surtout pas une présence réelle que nous pouvons garder dans un tabernacle), car il est une présence vivante. C’est à dire que le propre de ce pain est de créer du lien et d'ouvrir une relation. Ce pain nous construit dans notre vie ensemble.

Et quand Paul dit que nous sommes scellés par l’Esprit de Dieu, ce n’est pas parce que nous ne volerons plus, ou que nous nous mettrons plus en colère ou que nous arrêterons d’insulter les autres ou de dire du mal, que Dieu va placer son sceau sur nous. Nous le savons, par notre comportement nous ne gagnerons jamais le fait que Dieu nous aime. Nous recevons cet amour.

Certains voient dans l’image du sceau l’acte de notre baptême. Qu’au moment du baptême le croyant est scellé par le Saint-Esprit, peut-être, mais je trouve cette explication un peu mécanique. Le sceau est une garantie et un engagement, une marque de véracité. Il nous est donné comme promesse de la part de Dieu et même si tout n’est pas parfait dans nos vies, nous pouvons toujours compter sur cette promesse.

Nous recevons ce sceau comme la marque de la confiance que Dieu place en nous.

Au cœur de la vie de l’Eglise, 

quand le vivre ensemble est difficile et parfois tordu, 

quand j’ai du mal à pardonner l’affront et l’humiliation,

quand je ne peux plus voir l’autre comme enfant de Dieu, mais comme celle ou celui qui m’embête,

je sais que je peux vivre et oser l’Evangile. 

Les signes de la promesse de Dieu que j’ai reçu comme autant de miettes de pain ou un sceau me disent que je suis accepté tel que je suis. En eux je puise la force de mes paroles et mes gestes de tous les jours. C’est ainsi (et non pas parce que j'ai réussi) que ma journée devient "une offrande et un sacrifice agréable à Dieu".
