Can we talk about how amazing Sister Peter Marie is? Like Father Mukada is good but he’ll get his turn I need to gush about my girl.

She’s one of the few women in the show and yet she is so powerful. She influences policy and action and character development in a way that never feels forced or like the writers are trying to act through her. Honestly she reminds me of Linda from Lucifer.

Sister P is so well adapted to her environment. She’s aware of how awful imprisonment is, she doesn’t have the idealistic blinders of McManus, but she still believes she can make a difference. And she does. She doesn’t accept miracles, she just sets expectations in a way that is almost parenting. Like she’ll be disappointed if those expectations aren’t met, but she won’t abandon her charges and she always believes that they are capable of meeting expectations, it’s their choices that leads them to fall short or exceed.

She also has an excellent grasp on the way belief systems work in the prison system. Not that I’m an expert, but the way Oz portrays the prison system, without belief in something, supernatural or otherwise, there is nothing to keep the inmates moving forward. And yet, that belief system has to conform to the realities of prison life or it begins to feel like a vague facade. That’s why she isn’t preachy and doesn’t say things like “everything happens for a reason” when she knows that isn’t going to be enough or stand up to the realities of prison life.

I also just love the fact that she’s both a nun and a psychologist. Her faith is important to her, but she’s not evangelical, she doesn’t try to push it on others. It guides her decision-making and she never hides that, but there’s no impetus for her patients to convert or find Jesus or whatever. She has great belief in how religion can heal, but she filters it through the lens of arguably secular scientific knowledge. Is she going to encourage victims to meet with their attackers because it’s divine to forgive? Maybe that was her thought but she’s not going to make that the reason behind suggesting it.

There’s also a ton of respect for her from all areas of the show. The administration respects her, the inmates respect her, her peers respect her, and I think a lot of it has to do with how misogynistic and outright hostile a men’s prison can be for a woman but not only has she stuck it out, she’s still faithful and still working to help people regardless of whether she likes them or not. The only one she shows away from is Keller and a lot of that is because she knows that meeting with her wouldn’t truly help him. She isn’t completely self-sacrificial, she can see the bigger picture, but it doesn’t keep her from arguing that individuals matter.

She also has an excellent sense of humor and always brings out the best in the people around her. I just love her so much.
