HMMMMMM interesting to think about arranged marriage with prince shouto...............
i think he wouldn't know. what to expect with you. i think he'd have an idea, as in, what his father, the king, has taught him; the duties of a wife, where your importance ranks in relation to his duties. what he's not meant to discuss with you, like politics and matters at court and foreign relations. how you will speak to him. what to buy in the event that you become...unhappy. a nuisance.
("and she will," enji had muttered, briefly glancing up from the parchment on his desk to fix shouto with a look he didn't understand. "they always do.")
you don't meet until the royal wedding, when you're coming down the long aisle of the grand cathedral, dressed up in a swathe of silk and lace. a thin, gossamer veil hides you from him, but he can feel the ardor in your eyes, the intensity burning through the material. it doesn't seem real until your bare face is only a breath from his own, until he has to see the earnestness in your stare, too.
your kiss is simple and chaste, nothing spectacular, something that leaves his mind as soon as it's over. ever a todoroki, a hundred other things enter his mind, all regarding his now iron-laid obligations: it's vital he meet with advisor keigo to reiterate the plan to establish his authority among the council; general aizawa is in attendance to the wedding, and shouto has not yet received word on his opinion of the new king's ideas to modernize their armed forces; midoriya is somewhere, no doubt wanting to go over state affairs again.
truthfully, shouto doesn't spend long "celebrating". there's already too much that's required of him, hardly enough time to even scarf down a few bites of the banquet laid out before he's being chartered off into discussions on foreign relations and infrastructure development. maybe once or twice does he look back to check on you, chatting pleasantly with his mother and sister at the front of the great hall, and that's satisfying enough.
it's not until much later that he sees you again; freshly bathed and wearing something sheer and long and white, atop his bed.
or his marriage bed, he must remind himself.
enji didn't spend long going over consummation, with him or either of his brothersā€”natsuo, red-faced and annoyed at the very subject, always storming off, and touya had seemed well-aware of the process, at the time (back before he'd been ex-communicated). it had sounded simple: strip off your dress, get his cock out and into you, and only retreat once he was sure his seed had been spilled.
ā€”so he's not exactly sure what to do or think or how to feel, when you're laid bare and reaching up to hold his face.
it's so startling that he sits back on his knees, to frown where he's looming over you.
you stare at him quietly, like you're expecting him to say something, and he only has a moment to wonder if this is you becoming an unhappy nuisanceā€”what had been the answer, to solve this, anyway?ā€”before you let out a soft laugh.
"c'mere," you tell him, sitting up, too, when he keeps his distance. "i want you to kiss me."
"i already have."
"yes," you laugh again, amusement glowing in your eyes, like the warmth off the fireplace, as you reach for the ties on his trousers. "but you're meant to do it again."
and up until then, he'd felt confident in his achievements, his executions; he'd managed a lot today, in one evening, and he had a lifetime to manage more. it was a good a start as any, he'd thought, but nowā€”
shouto almost can't get the words out when he feels your hands ghosting up the inside of his shirt, nails tickling over his ribs. "a-am i?"
you wrap your arms around his waist in what could be a hug, scooting forward to look up at him with your chin against his chest. "yes," you smile andā€”it's familiar in a way, how touya would whenever he was teasing. "you're my husband, you're meant to kiss me whenever i want."
thatā€”was not something his father had ever said, he was sure, and it was a too-rare exchange between his own parents. now that he thinks about itā€”and he does, then, because he's faced with the reality that he doesn't know as much as he shouldā€”he's not sure the former king and queen even sleep in the same room, much less the same bed.
much less hug and touch and even smile, the way you do now.
there's no argument he can make against it, aside from finding keigo to find his father to verify the truth to such a statement, and he's only meant to retreat from this bed on one condition.
and if this is what it takes to meet thatā€”then shouto supposes he'll have to do it, for now. he's a brand new king, after all, and it would seem he still has much to learn.

DINNER IS (finally) SERVED
3000ish words later and part 8 is here! hope you guys enjoy!
(p.s my headcanons explainations are in the tags if you're curious)
(p.p.s credit also goes to @rin-solo for the first headcanon )
the post/thread that started this whole au
dinner scene: part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5 | part 6 | part 7
there's a masterlist now!
*odysseus is making his way to the dining hall, while athena and poseidon are following behind*
poseidon: *looking around at the decorations/tapestry dotted around*
poseidon: *seeā€™s a tapestry of what looks to be a very much younger odysseus in full king & armour attire*
poseidon: *stops walking, and turns to look at the actual odysseus in front of him, then back at the tapestry*
poseidon: *to odysseus with a sardonic tone* do your weavers like making you look like a boy, or was that a decision you made to make yourself look younger?
odysseus: *pauses his walking to see what poseidon is talking about*
athena: *also pauses and turns to poseidon*
odysseus: *sees the tapestry in question*
odysseus: *sighs* of course you point that one outĀ
athena: *who knew odysseus before he was king*
athena: *glaring at poseidon* uncle, you shouldnā€™t make assumptions, especially when you donā€™t know the facts
odysseus: *pats athena on the shoulder as he passes her*
odysseus: itā€™s fine athena
odysseus: *next to poseidon and looking up at the tapestry* if you must know, that is actually the age i was.Ā
poseidon: *not believing him* yeah right, you couldnā€™t be older than fifteen in this
odysseus: *turns to him with a sharp look* youā€™re correct, i was fifteen
poseidon: *slightly wary of odysseusā€™ mood* soā€¦ you became king at fifteen? isnā€™t that a little bit young for a mortal to rule a kingdom?
odysseus: *turns back to the tapestry* i was already the king, i was actually crowned when i was thirteen
poseidon: *shocked and confused* why would a child be given a kingdom to run?
odysseus: *looks down with a sad smile, at the memory of his father telling him about him losing his mind, and how sorry he was to place such a huge responsibility on his young sonā€™s shoulders*
odysseus: well, i had no choice, but i would do it again if i had toā€¦Ā
odysseus: *turns to athena* besides, i had athena to help guide me
athena: *smiles with a nod at odysseus*
odysseus: *starts walking in the direction of the dining hall again* anywayā€¦enough of that, can we please just make our way to the dining hall now
*they all continue making their way down the hall*
poseidon: *notices a stain on the floor tiles not far in front of them*
poseidon: *points* i think your servants missed a spot
athena & odysseus: *both look to where heā€™s pointing*
athena: *chuckles to herself in knowing*
odysseus: *smirks*Ā
poseidon: *sees both their expressions, and is confused*Ā
odysseus: oh that..oh donā€™t worry itā€™s clean
odysseus: *shrugs* itā€™s just so hard to get bloodstains out of white titles
poseidon: *wide eyed* blood?
odysseus: yeah.. not long after i finished with you, i arrived back on my island to find my palace overrun with 108ā€¦muttsā€¦ all vying for my wifeā€™s hand.Ā
odysseus: *waving his hand like it was a simple issue* so i made sure to deal with them all myselfā€¦ unfortunately one of them left a stain.
odysseus: -oh look weā€™ve made it
odysseus: hope we havenā€™t kept them too long
poseidon: *shocked at all the new odysseus lore heā€™s unlocked*
athena: *laughing at poseidonā€™s expression*
odysseus: *opening the door* come on letā€™s head in
poseidon: *shakes away the shock*
odysseus: *to poseidon* i guess itā€™s time to introduce you to my wife
*they all walk through the doorway into the dining hall*
*there penelope and telemachus both stand not too far from the dining table; which has quite the feast laid out, and from the steam coming off of it, it had not long be put there*
odysseus: *heads over to his son & wife*
odysseus: *looks at poseidon* poseidon, youā€™ve met my son telemachus before.
telemachus: *can barely keep in his excitement*Ā
telemachus: hi- i mean good evening lord poseidon, iā€™m so happ- grateful you accepted my father's invitation for dinner.Ā
telemachus: *puts his arm on his chest, and leans forward in aĀ  bow of respect* i hope you enjoy the evening.
odysseus: *narrows his eyes at poseidon, silently threatening him to not be rude to his son*
telemachus: *looks back up at poseidon, smile on his face*
poseidon: *quickly nods his head in greeting to telemachus* good evening prince, your father tells me that this was all your ideaĀ
telemachus: *raises a hand to nervously scratch under his chin* umā€¦ yes i guess it was
poseidon: well then, thank you for the idea to invite me.
telemachus: *hand leaves his chin and a big smile breaks out* well of course! you are my fatherā€™s friend after all!
poseidon: *eye twitches before he quickly composes himself*Ā
poseidon: yesā€¦ friend.
odysseus: *coughs* yes and now that youā€™ve both reacquainted yourselves againā€¦ telemachus why donā€™t you go speak with athena for a moment
telemachus: sure!
*telemachus makes his way to athena, and they start talking amongst themselves*
odysseus: *puts his arm around penelopeā€™s waist* now, please let me introduce you to my wife; the queen of ithaca, penelope.Ā
penelope: *doesnā€™t bow like telemachus, but nods in greeting* welcome to our palace lord poseidon
poseidon: *nods back* thank you for having me queen penelope
penelope: *smiles but her eyes have a certain glint to them*Ā
penelope: my husband has told me all about your part in his journey home to us
poseidon: *totally not panicking a little* uh-
penelope: *glint leaves her eyes, but her smile remains*
penelope: -and also how you have helped out on his and my sonā€™s fishing trips lately.
penelope: of course, i would also like thank you for taking the time to attend tonight
poseidon: sureā€¦ no problem?
odysseus: great, everyone has met everyone!Ā
odysseus: *to everyone* now, shall we sit down and eat the lovely feast the cooks have made us, before it gets cold?
odysseus: *moves to pull out one of the chairs at the head of the table for penelope as he normally does, when he notices that, there is only one chair instead of two*
odysseus: *looks up at the table and sees a piece of parchment with ā€˜motherā€™ written on it*Ā
odysseus: huh?
telemachus: *makes his way over to his father* oh! thereā€™s a different than usual seating plan for tonight! iā€™ve put everyone's names where they should sit.
odysseus: *smiles at telemachus* oh ok, sure!
odysseus: well, i guess i should look for mine then, hey?
telemachus: yes, and please everyone else too!
*everyone makes their way to the table to see where theyā€™re sitting (even though three of them already know)*
odysseus: *sees the parchment with ā€˜fatherā€™ on it*Ā
odysseus: *expecting to have either athena or telemachus next to him*
odysseus: *watches as athena stands in front of the seat opposite him*
odysseus: *thinks itā€™s weird to put athena & poseidon together, but thinks telemachus has done is as they are uncle & niece*
odysseus: *then sees telemachus stood in front of the seat next to athena*
odysseus: wait-
poseidon: *sees his name and heads towards it, only to look up and see odysseus standing in front of the seat next to him*
poseidon: wait-
poseidon & odysseus: *both look at each other in horror that they're stuck next to each other all evening*
telemachus: *not noticing the looks of doom on their faces* isnā€™t this great? itā€™s a family dinner, so what better than friends sitting together?Ā
telemachus: *turning to penelope* sorry youā€™re by yourself at the head of the table though mother
penelope: *smiles and waves her hand* i donā€™t mind
penelope: anyway, let's sit and eat!
*everyone but odysseus and poseidon sit down. both who have a death grip on the back of their seats*
penelope: *clears her throat* odysseus, lord poseidonā€¦ would you both please sit down.
odysseus: *snaps out of his staring at poseidon*Ā
odysseus: uh sureā€¦
odysseus: *sits down and look back to poseidon, nodding his head at poseidonā€™s seat in the motion for him to also sit down*
poseidon: *still doesnā€™t sit*
odysseus: *a millisecond of a flash of red eyes*Ā
poseidon: *sits*
odysseus: *internally to himself* oh this is gonna be a long evening
odysseus: *to everyone* ok, everyone dig in!
odysseus: *to poseidon* can you get what you want for yourself, mighty sea god? or do you need a mortalā€™s help?
poseidon: *grabbing a lamb chop off a platter and tearing into it savagely in defiance*
odysseus: *rolls his eyes at poseidon, but goes to place a filet of fish on his plate*
*everyone has been eating and talking*
poseidon: *looks at penelope (who is talking to telemachus & athena) and then looks at odysseus*
poseidon: *thinking and then looks back to penelope*
odysseus: *to poseidon* is there a reason you keep looking at my wife?
poseidon: *jumps at little at being caught looking*Ā
poseidon: *turns to odysseus* oh do not worry yourself, i have no interest in your wife
odysseus: *unimpressed* why do you keep looking at her then?
poseidon: im..curiousĀ
odysseus: *narrowing his eyes* about?
poseidon: normally you mortal men choose women younger than them for their wivesā€¦ yet clearly your wife is; from my estimatesā€¦ about a decade older than you
poseidon: *now with his hand under his chin, leaning on the table*Ā
poseidon: do you perhapsā€¦prefer older women odysseus?
odysseus: *hands tighten in grip around his cutlery*
poseidon: *notices odysseus hasnā€™t responded yet*
poseidon: iā€™m right arenā€™t -
odysseus: no.
odysseus: *his eyes may not be red, but are clearly full of anger*
poseidon: *eyes widen in worry* whoa whoa! no need to get angry, itā€™s just a simple observationā€¦. anyone if they pay attention can see the age difference
poseidon: *moves his hand to flick his hair back over his shoulder* itā€™s not a bad thing
odysseus: *takes a breath in to calm down and then slowly releases it*
odysseus: we are- were the same ageā€¦ physically at least
poseidon: *confused* i donā€™t follow
odysseus: *looks at poseidon* during the 10 years it took for me to get homeā€¦ i found myself stuck on a goddessā€™ island for 7 of themā€¦
poseidon: okā€¦
odysseus: *closes his eyes* caly- the goddess had full control over everything on the islandā€¦ her magic influenced everythingā€¦ including a mortal's ability to age.
poseidon: so you didnā€™t-
odysseus: -age? yeah
odysseus: *sighs and opens his eyes* when i realised i wasnā€™tā€¦ i- i-Ā
odysseus: lets just say i didnā€™t handle it well
poseidon: *blinks at this new information* oh
odysseus: yep ā€˜ohā€™ indeedā€¦Ā
odysseus: *looks back at poseidon*
odysseus: didnā€™t you think it was odd that i looked exactly the same when we met again, almost 10 years after our first meeting?
poseidon: in my defenceā€¦ i was angry and trying to kill you, i wasnā€™t really paying attention to how you looked
odysseus: *rolls his eyes* i guess that's true
telemachus: uh lord poseidon? may i ask you a question?
poseidon: *happy to not continue his conversation with odysseus*
poseidon: *to telemachus* ask away prince of ithaca
telemachus: is it true that you gave achilles his horses balius & xanthus?
poseidon: *amazed at telemachusā€™ knowledge*Ā
poseidon: not directlyā€¦ but yes i am the reason he came to acquire them. you see i gave them to his father peleus, as a wedding gift for his wife thetisā€¦
*poseidon continues to tell the tale, and odysseus speaks with athena and penelope while more time passes*
*the meal is continuing smoothly as can be*
poseidon: *notices that odysseus has only been eating the fish. not touching a single bit of pork, beef or lamb that's also on the table*Ā
poseidon: *who has continuously eaten all meats available*
poseidon: *to odysseus* is there something i should know about the meat?
odysseus: huh?
poseidon: *points at the selection of meat in question* what's wrong with the meat? youā€™ve only touched the fish.
poseidon: if i hadnā€™t seen the others eat it, iā€™d worry youā€™d asked your cooks to poison it or something.Ā
odysseus: *raised eyebrow* poison wonā€™t hurt you though?Ā
odysseus: *pointing a fork at him* also, why do you care about my eating habits?
poseidon: *frowning at the fork* i donā€™t, iā€™m just-
odysseus: curious? poseidon, i thought you were the god of the sea, not curiosityā€¦
poseidon: *huffs* forget it-
odysseus: i canā€™t
poseidon: *now his eyebrow is raised* youā€¦canā€™t?
odysseus: *now using the fork to push the food on his plate around* i canā€™t stomach eating lamb, pork or beef anymore
poseidon: *forever confused by odysseus* uh why?
odysseus: *gives poseidon a ā€˜do i really have to explain everything?ā€™ look*
poseidon: *just stares*
odysseus: *once again sighing because of poseidon* well i thought youā€™d understand lambā€¦ after the whole sheep incident withā€¦ your son.
odysseus: then after i escaped you with the wind bag-
poseidon: *rolls his eyes at the memory*
odysseus: we wound up on the sorceress circeā€™s islandā€¦ where she turned my men to pigs.Ā
odysseus: i managed to convince her to turn them back, but it now feels weird to eat pork
odysseus: as for beef, short story is my men ignored my warnings and killed the sacred cattle of the sun godā€¦ so yeah beef is a no go for me also.Ā
poseidon: *wondering how one mortal managed to interact with so many gods on a journey to get home*
poseidon: *laughs at odysseus* and youā€™re letting that affect your eating habits? i expected you to be stronger than that odysseus
odysseus: *narrows his eyes at poseidon* oh just like how you let my handling of your trident, affect you into doing as i say?
poseidon: *now glaring back*Ā
poseidon: *turns away from odysseus* whatever, more meat for me
*dinner continues, with telemachus asking poseidon more questions. poseidon loving the interest in him and telelmachusā€™ knowledge, answers the all the questions with surprising enthusiasm*
*eventually what was once a giant feast of food has nearly been cleared from the table, thanks to having two gods eating most of it*
telemachus: have you enjoyed yourself so far lord poseidon?Ā
telemachus: *smiling* itā€™s been really fascinating and fun to learn so much more about you
poseidon: *almost letting a small smile appear on his face in return*
poseidon: *instead just nods* yes, it certainly has been an interesting & knowledgeable evening
telemachus: what about the seating, was it a good idea to put you with my father?
poseidon: *wants to answer no, but feels a kick from under the table. clearly from odysseus*
poseidon: yes, you came up with an ok-
odysseus: *gives another kick*Ā
poseidon: -great idea
telemachus: *laughs in happiness*Ā
telemachus: oh but i canā€™t take all the credit
odysseus: *raises an eyebrow in curiosity*Ā
athena: *who is sipping wine next to him*
athena: *slightly chokes* wai-
odysseus: *suspicious* son, you must make sure to tell us who else to thank for this
telemachus: *not understanding the bombshell heā€™s about to drop* oh athena actually came up with the idea!
athena: *suddenly nervous with the two very intense stares directed at her*
athena: w-well it was just a suggestion reallyā€¦
telemachus: no ā€˜thena! remember you said as itā€™s a family dinner, friends should sit with friends!
odysseus: *to athena with the fakest smile* oh athena, how considerate!
penelope: *who has been quiet this whole exchange*
telemachus: *as if he hasnā€™t already unknowingly thrown one person to the wolves* but i of course had to run it by mother first, as she was helping me with all the planning!
penelope: *eyes have totally not widened*
telemachus: she said it was a great idea!
odysseus: *now to penelope* oh my dear wife, a great idea eh?
poseidon: *just chugs back his cup of wine at the revelations*
*after a awkward moment (at least for 4 of them) they continue on finishing the meal*
*eventually the food is finished and the dinner has come to an end, everyone has moved away from the dinner table and are now sitting on cushion chairs or standing around them talking amongst themselves*
poseidon: *looking out the window seeing just how dark the night sky now is*Ā
poseidon: well this has been a lovely evening, but it is getting late and i have been away from the sea for as long as i can.
poseidon: *turning to penelope and nodding his head in actual respect* queen penelope, thank you for your hosting
poseidon: *without nodding at them* athena, odysseusā€¦ good night.
*before poseidon can turn to bid telemachus good night, the prince runs out the room*
telemachus: *yelling before he leaves the room* please lord poseidon, wait a moment! i forgot something!
poseidon: *turns to look at odysseus in confusion*Ā
odysseus: *just shrugs also confused*Ā
poseidon: *turns back to the door, telemachus long gone* uh sure.
*not long later telemachus runs back into the room dishevelled but holding something in his hand*
telemachus: *walks up to poseidon*Ā
telemachus: *bows and holds out something covered in a silk cloth to him*
poseidon: uh-
telemachus: itā€™s a gift! iā€™m not expecting anything in return, and iā€™m sure you have better thingsā€¦ but i saw it and thought youā€™d like it
poseidon: *blinks, but takes the gift from telemachusā€™ hands*
poseidon: *carefully unties the silk cloth*
poseidon: *breathes in sharply*
telemachus: *not sure if that's a good or bad reaction* uh if you donā€™t like it that's fin-
poseidon: *holds his hand to stop telemachus*Ā
poseidon: prince of ithac-
telemachus: telemachus- sorry for interrupting. please my lord, call me telemachus
poseidon: ā€¦telemachus. thank you, this is a very thoughtful gift.Ā
poseidon: i will cherish it.
penelope & odysseus: *curious over what's got the god of the seas ā€˜cherishingā€™ something*
athena: *small smile as she knows*
*penelope & odysseus move closer to poseidon who is still staring down at his gift. once close enough they can see in his hand is a a handcrafted glass/crystal hippocampus*
*poseidon ended up wrapping it back in the silk cloth, and placing it in his chiton. He then thanked telemachus again and bid him good night & farewell. odysseus offered to walk back to the cove with him, but poseidon waved him off and told him to stay with his family*
#poseidon: *returned home back to his palace*#poseidon: *once again looking at the gift this time with a small smile on his face*#amphitrite: *looking at poseidon* whatcha got there?#poseidon: *stuffs telemachusā€™ gift into his chiton* uhā€¦ uhā€¦MOLY?!#amphitrite: *raised eyebrow* the king of ithacaā€¦ odysseus gave youā€¦moly?#poseidon: this isn't from odysse- *cough* i mean; noā€¦ he didn't#poseidon: it's from his son.#amphitrite: *now both eyebrows raised in disbelief* the prince gave you moly?#poseidon: *panicking as he's the god of the seas not of lies*#poseidon: well they're descended from hermesā€¦ he practically hands out this stuff as you knowā€¦#amphitrite: uh huh... what ever you say husband#okay headcanon 1 - calypso said 'under my spell we're stuck in paradise' & to me this made me think well if she controls everything#then surely a goddess' magic can have other consequences like stopping a mortal aging. or extremely slowly aging.#once poor odysseus realises he wasn't getting older but his son and wife would be...he broke fearing he'd outlive them#calypso obvs doesn't also want the love of her life getting old/dying on her too#also credit to @rin-solo for this head canon too!#headcanon 2 - it actually happened while i was eating a burger. i thought man i'd struggle to eat any meat after all what ody went through#and so thats how that came to be! i believe he will eat goat/rabbit/chicken etc. but fish is easier with y'know ithaca being a island#so telemachus' gift has been revealed! i thought a hippocampus would be better that just a sea creature or horse. why not both?#also there will be a part 9...ody's revenge/punishment for athena and penelope's seating plan#but i need a small break after this monstrosity#odysseus epic#poseidon epic#telemachus epic#penelope epic the musical#epic the musical#epic: the musical#friends in higher places au?#nonsense thoughts

what up iā€™ve been obsessed with would you fall in love with me again like every other person on the planet and i canā€™t stop thinking about penelopeā€™s final verse
sheā€™s so angry; angry that odysseus would dare to suggest that her love for him has faltered or his actions were enough to destroy it. sheā€™s been waiting, working her fingers raw unweaving her shroud every night, not sleeping as the suitors camp inside her home; every day a threat to her and her son, to her kingdom if an unworthy man - and they are all unworthy - should take the throne. she knew they wouldnā€™t wait forever, that at some point her deception would be realised; her dedication to her husband means she is at constant risk and the first thing odysseus does when he sees her - if this even is him - is question her love for him?
the very first thing he says (other than her name) is, ā€œi am not the man you fell in love with.ā€ penelope asks him if itā€™s really him standing there or if sheā€™s ā€œdreaming once moreā€. once more. sheā€™s felt the cruelty of hope before; has looked at her doorway and seen odysseus the same as when he left (which is probably partly why sheā€™s so shocked by how he actually looks) and felt unfathomable pain when her hopes were dashed over and over again. she asks if he is really her odysseus and he says no
yes, in his mind, odysseus canā€™t see how he can deserve her love after everything heā€™s done - the atrocities heā€™s committed, to himself he isnā€™t the same man, ā€œi see a man who gets to make it home alive, but itā€™s no longer youā€ - but all penelope hears is her husband, the man she loves and waited for, doubts the strength of her love
penelope asks what kind of things heā€™s done and it must be shocking to hear; his actions so different from the man who left her behind even if he did them in name of returning to her. but when she asks him to move the bed, itā€™s as much a challenge as it is a test. sheā€™s asking him to prove that he is the monster he claims to be; that if heā€™s changed so much and become so heartless, he should have no qualms about ripping the symbol of their love from its roots. and itā€™s also her only way of actually determining if this man who claims to be her husband yet doesnā€™t take her in his arms, is actually him
ā€œjust a moment of labour would bring me some peaceā€ - if he does what she asks, then she will know either heā€™s changed so much that heā€™s no longer her odysseus or heā€™s another fake and was never hers to begin with; that her husband didnā€™t just stand in front of her and claim she canā€™t love him as he is. but sheā€™s done. she was already willing to die when she stood behind the twelve axes she challenged the suitors to shoot through. sheā€™s so tired. she just wants it all to be over
ā€œonly my husband knew that, so i guess that makes him youā€ - i guess. even after telling her something only odysseus and her knew, penelopeā€™s still not convinced that itā€™s truly him. how many men came to her door claiming to be her long lost husband, banking on time and distance to dull memory of his face and voice, on her longing and desperation for odysseus to blind her into believing them?
but if this is her husband? if the man sheā€™s loved through decades of absence has finally returned to her?
ā€œi will fall in love with you over and over againā€ - an exhausted promise, the core of who penelope is and how she feels; assuaging his doubts and his own clear pain
but
ā€œno matter how long itā€™s been, youā€™re mine. donā€™t tell me youā€™re not the same person, youā€™re always my husbandā€ - penelope is screaming at him; how dare odysseus say this to her? dismiss her love and her suffering? he saw the men outside, heā€™s smart enough to know what they were here for and instead of apologising for being gone for so long, instead of begging for forgiveness for inadvertently putting her and their son at risk, instead of embracing her and putting an end to her torment, odysseus doubts her
ā€œand iā€™ve been waiting, waitingā€ - the tone shift of penelope screaming at him to lamenting how long sheā€™s been waiting is heartbreaking; itā€™s quieter as she gets lost in the pain of her grief, her anger failing as she recalls the memories of her long years of solitude. odysseus tries to call her back with his gentle ā€œpenelopeā€ - such a contrast to his own exhausted anger at being asked to destroy their marital bed now that he understands why she asked that of him - but she canā€™t hear him; sheā€™s too trapped in the memories. he tries again, still gentle but more insistent, and this time she does hear him and her anger comes rushing back along with her grief. her ā€œwaiting, waiting,ā€ becomes almost accusatory; sheā€™s been alone for so long and itā€™s bc of him, bc he wasnā€™t there, bc he left her waiting
that abrupt ā€œohā€ at the end of the verse isnā€™t just a vocalisation; in that moment, sheā€™s realising that she has realised that he truly is odysseus. she knew it was him before she even processed it. she wouldnā€™t be this angry if he were anyone else; love and grief and anger coalescing in one single divine moment where penelope finally believes her odysseus has returned to her
ā€œfor youā€ - sheā€™s been waiting and waiting, years turning to dust, her sleepless nights and days spent living in fear and preemptive grief- and it was all for him. odysseus is actually here. which means her waiting is over
ā€œhow long has it been?ā€
ā€œ20 yearsā€
ā€œi- i love youā€

One thing I absolutely adore about MHA is how they show the realistic body development of Izukuā€™s mother.
Like- itā€™s just not practical for her to keep her younger body while sheā€™s single mothering Izuku, growing older, etc, etc. You can see her maturity through her body. Through her face. She looks so kind, yet so worn and wary. Whereas her younger self seemed more aloof, more spastic. More trusting.
So young.
Itā€™s clear how much sheā€™s grown as a person while raising Izuku, and itā€™s evident in her features. They did a wonderful job aging an already grown woman.

Hrrrggg everything hurts. Thinking about the MegOP sparkling (I need names, but am thinking about naming her Stronghold) Iā€™ve had rattling around in brain for the past month or so, so here goes, continuity soup because I said so. This isā€¦ a long one šŸ˜…
So we start with the usual pre war MegOP situation with Gladiator Megs and Archivist Orion, who go talk to the high council and yadah yadah, you know what happens next. (think TFP) OP gets the Matrix and Megatron is betrayed and starts up his intergalactic terrorist group (yippee!) When he finds out, Uh-Oh! He carrying and itā€™s Optimusā€™sā€¦ he freaks out pretty hard but WaveWave is there to support him during his pregnancy (Soundwaves a bit jealous about not being the one whoā€™s currently carrying but is excited to see/raise a new spark). Eventually he has the baby and there are a few.. complications.
1. Sparklings are supposed to have strong bonds with their carrier and sire, but in Strongholds case, they have no sire bond with Optimus (the matrix prevented it), which causes her to have spark flutters (essentially heart problems) causing the little one lots of pain with no exception of expressing it but crying/being a fussy baby while sheā€™s young. The only was they find this out is with Soundwaves telepathy, something they are VERY grateful for.
2. Megatron suffers from GREATLY from postpartum depression, and canā€™t even bear to look at his daughter. He can bring himself to feed her or try to establish any type of bond between the two and ends up hating her and what she stands for in his mind (having OP and trying to have a family with him)
This causes the young heiress to be raised by the deception high command with very little input on Megatrons behalf besides being an abusive mom and wanting her to be a warrior. Sheā€™s mainly being raised by Wavewave, the elite trine and Hook due to having to be in the med bay almost constantly in her sparkling hood. As a sparkling she showed major talent and interests in the arts, something that was supported by their caregivers, but almost gets beaten to death by Megatron finds out she wants to be an artist and not a warrior. (Megatron has ā€œtrainingā€ sessions with her, where she essentially gets beaten half to death but her carrier, who claims itā€™ll make her stronger. And when sheā€™s finally able to beat him, sheā€™ll be able to lead the decepticons) (this also leads to her hiding her passions) This is how she wins over Starscream and he decides to help raise/guide her (and who knows, maybe one day he or she will kill Megatron and heā€™ll be the leader of the decepticons) Sheā€™s raised to be a master spy (Soundwave) and interrogator/torturer (Shockwave and Starscream). Eventually though the war starts to pick up and everyone is headed to earth (think G1, but shockwave goes with the decepticons) leaving Stronghold alone on Cybertron with Rumble, Buzzsaw, Thundercraker, and the Constructicons to watch/take care of her; and her mentor Tarn (and the rest of the DJD) and a few other decepticons at about ~10 years old to Cybertronian standards. She finds herself forced to grow up and lead the Decepticons, being raised by the most ruthless and cunning bots has its advantages, and she ends up quickly taking out the Autobots on Cyberton leading the planet under Decepticon rule. However there was complications with the others (G1 style, went missing for a few billion years type-beat) She grows up a warlord, conquering Autobot territoryā€™s and wiping them out, searching for her lost family comrades, with the Deceptions ruling the galaxy, (exterminating the Autobots and making allies with/converting Neutrals). Sheā€™s ends up creating a vast and powerful empire (Thundercraker, Hook and Tarn are very proud).
On earth is the normal G1 -> Earthspark timeline, expect I ignore everything that happens after s1. Soundwave manages to get a SOS comm into deep space, which gets intercepted to the Decepticon empire. This happens around/a little after her spark almost gave out, as her carrier/sparkling bond was broken with Megatron, which was assumed to be due to his death. This made her spark unstable, and made her even more vulnerable to her spark attacks (also her occasional maniac episodes go worse/more common) She leads a ship to Earth where she finds that not only is her carrier ALIVE, which means he LEFT her HE DOESNT WANT HER HE NEVER WANTED HER- but also joined the enemy. And started a new family, one without her This is also how she and Optimus find out theyā€™re related, because honestly, Megā€™s forgot all about her. (Also, megaton has more of a major role in the Terranā€™s lives, which leaves Stronghold seething, swearing to end them) ((You know when/how Megatrons calls Twitch ā€œlittle birdā€? THAT USED TO BE HER NICKNAME SHE USED TO BE HIS LITTLE BIRD WHEN HE WAS HAPPY WITH HER)) (think of when shockwave was racist towards the Terranā€™s) Stronghold finds out that the decepticons have been stranded on earth, and have been being tortured by Autobots and their human allies (GHOST). She stages a jailbreak for the others and begins to plan war with the others left on earth (sheā€™s not leaving until Megatrons head is on a platter and sheā€™s ripped the matrix out of OPā€™s chest). (They chill in the atmosphere like the Nemesis in prime) Needless to say, Shockwave Soundwave and Starscream are very surprised/proud to see her and her accomplishments (if not sad that she (now about 15) had to grow up so fast and what has happened to her)
There are a few ways this AU can end and thereā€™ll prolly be a few alt timelinesā€¦ šŸ‘€
Uhh anyways thatā€™s it,,, I hope you like her and I will probably draw the creature soon
(Please please ask me about her and my silly little AU šŸ„ŗšŸ„ŗšŸ„ŗ)

"Rhaenyra isn't the stepmother, she's the mother who stepped up!"
Tumblr media
The HOTD writers themselves are hardly doing anything to support that narrative, so I take this rhetoric with a grain of salt. While I think, in some way, Rhaenyra does care for Baela and Rhaena....if I had to point out a motherly figure for them that could pose as someone stepping in Laena's place, Rhaenyra would not be it.
#house of the dragon#hotd#hotd critical#rhaenyra targaryen critical#baela targaryen#rhaena targaryen#this mainly just comes from my frustration with this fandom painting rhae as overly motherly toward baela & rhaena#making it seem like we had so much to go on for her being a good stepmother when it's really the bear minimum#there's more with rhaenys being there for them than with rhae--- both physically & verbally#even with scenes where she's with them: for baela it holds more of political means with her having a dragon and then using her to see corly#like sure she could be concerned about her well-being but it's definitely not on the same level as with her sons#don't even get me started on with rhaena bc that ā€œbe a mother to themā€ line had me šŸ¤¬#and her referring to her sons as hers and the pain of sending them away but not adhering to rhaena's emotional needs and feelings of inferi#rity--- like it didn't sit right with me especially when she couldn't even be bothered to hug her#i like to enjoy headcanons about their relationship but the canon material doesn't stray far either#rhaenys raised baela alongside her on driftmark she sought rhaena out when they met after so long#she advocated for rhaena to her husband over joffery--- she's their grandMOTHER that stepped up tbh#tbh i wouldn't really be rocking with my stepmom if she sought after & slept with my dad at my mom & stillborn brother's funeral#barely comforted my sister and i when we were injured in a fight (only her sons)#then got married to said father not long after said funeral...like i'd be pressed tbh!#dni if you can't have a collected conversation about this#rhaenys targaryen#(also just bc im a little critical of rhae doesn't mean i hate her in comparison to others she's not that bad tbh)

Question about Couya! Since she is a bastard what are the reasons about her being brought into the main family by her father. Was it genuine care for his child or a way to save face politically/socially? Is her birth mother alive? Do you think she would have had a better life growing up anywhere else?
This is in large part due to how cultural perceptions and legal punishment of adultery varies between male and female citizens, looped into the very strictly patrilineal kinship system.
By legal definition, the word for 'adultery' applies only to situations where a man has an affair with a married woman, or a married woman has an affair with any man. Other forms of affairs (eg a married man having an affair with an unmarried woman) are wrapped into a broader set of sexual misdemeanors and aren't often charged or punished in practice, and the punishments are comparatively minor (if an unwed woman's father pursues charges, the man in the affair is likely to just pay a fine). On a social level, extramaritial affairs in general are certainly not Approved of and seen as lowly and dishonorable, but the average response is significantly less harsh/more willing to entertain Nuance with men than with women.
In this society there's differentiated shades of bastardry depending on the contexts of the child's birth, as well as a distinction for 'nameless bastards' (has not been claimed by their biological father or maternal grandfather, or claimed in adoption).
a) A child born to an unmarried woman via an unmarried man: non-issue for father, potentially serious social harm for the woman (especially if she has never been married and expected virginal, much less severe as a widow or divorcee). The child will not be notably disadvantaged in of themselves (their status will depend more on whether they are claimed and thus provided the social security of a family patriarch), the father will experience no hard disadvantages in claiming them.
b) A child born to an unmarried woman via a married man: mild sexual misdemeanor for the father carrying levels of social shame, even more serious social harm for the woman (often framed as not just loose but a manipulative Seductress of a married man). The child might experience minor to moderate social disadvantages, the consequences of the father claiming them are purely social and will not typically be severe. (Couya is this)
c) A child born to a married woman via an unmarried or married man: both man and woman have committed a crime and can be severely punished. The biological father can technically claim the child but will be disincentivized from doing so. This is the form of bastardry most comparable to the conventional definition, in that it is heavily stigmatized and has effects on concerns of kinship and inheritance.
In addendum to this, if the adulterous wife's legal husband claims the child, this may be punishable if determined to be active concealment of adultery (which is also a crime), and has EXTREME social consequences either way. (Either you're a cuckold too stupid to notice that your wife has been skipping out on you, or you're a MEGAcuckold adultery-accessory willingly rearing another man's child after being horribly shamed by him).
(This is separate from adoption- a man who marries a woman with an unclaimed child after the fact (whether it was a product of adultery or just a general out of wedlock birth) and claims the child is an adoptive father, he is not concealing adultery or being cuckolded.)
A child born in an affair can be considered an heir to their biological fathers (descent and kinship is fully patrilineal and on a Basic level it doesn't matter who the mother is), and can very smoothly and legally be claimed when the affair was not considered criminal adultery. The concern on that front is social perception rather than material legal consequences or kinship issues.
Couya's birth mother was an unwed servant working as a housekeeper for her father Saizen, so the Crime of adultery did not take place. It would be considered a minor sexual misdemeanor, and the woman's father was not about to pursue charges against a nobleman who could Ruin him (and had also formally expressed that he would claim the child, which meant he would not be saddled with a nameless bastard granddaughter). So the concerns here were entirely social.
The affair might have started beforehand but the pregnancy that produced Couya occurred after his wife's third viable pregnancy ended in the premature birth of a underdeveloped boy deemed necessary to euthanize (and tbr would Not have survived either way). This was after Livya Haidamane had a couple early term miscarriages, two viable but very difficult pregnancies wherein one child was very weak and sickly for the first several years of life, and struggled to conceive every time. A lot of people are going to be at least a little sympathetic to a married man having an affair and claiming a bastard in this context. It's definitely ideal and practical to have more than two children, and his wife (while not outright infertile) clearly could not reliably bear healthy children. (The average response is going to be "Well he shouldn't have done it but like, I get it")
Couya being claimed by her father was a mix of genuine care and saving face. Initially it was MUCH more the latter than the former. Saizen made attempts to hide the servant's pregnancy and to keep his own wife out of sight during the late term (to prevent the baby appearing after his wife had been seen Extremely not pregnant). But there's some levels of care involved, he could very easily have fired the pregnant servant and had nothing to do with his bastard and she would have no recompense whatsoever. The choice to keep and claim the baby and ensure its entrance into the world bore as little social scrutiny as possible is an act of care for his own progeny.
This was Not an act of care for Couya's birth mother (beyond the fact that concealing her pregnancy would benefit her in hiding that she is not only Not a virgin prior to marriage but had a child). She probably would have been about 17-19 at the time and was fired a few months after giving birth, and most likely never saw Couya again after this point (if she did, it would most likely be in the context of seeing her as an adult Odonii in public and noting her to look Scarily familiar). She has an Okayish chance at still being alive, she'd be around 50 (and a person who survives the high infant mortality and birth casualty rates stands a good chance of hitting their 60s), though she could very well be a casualty of the drought+famine.
Whether or not Couya's life would have been better is kind of a mixed bag. She had an awful fucking childhood in large part because her adoptive mother Livya Haidamane hated her. (Livya was ultimately a pretty horrible person but not just like. An Evil Bitch. She had A Lot going on and Couya was a living breathing insult to her and reminder of like, every one of her dashed hopes and dreams). Couya is also autistic and presented very intense symptoms as a child in a society that is Not equipped for a mass-understanding and support of cognitive differences. But she still did have an immensely privileged life with profound physical/economic levels of security inaccessible to the vast majority of people in this region, including her birth mother. Saizen also actually Liked her and cared about her, he just wasn't a routine physical presence in any of his children's lives.
Had she been left with her biological mother, she would be in a very disadvantaged situation as a nameless bastard to an unwed mother. Her biological grandfather may or may not have been willing to claim her, and her mother would have great difficulties in finding a husband (which is ultimately necessary for the security of women in this society). I think her mother was a relatively kind person but not like, a perfect angel. She would probably have complicated feelings about her bastard daughter, especially one whose very existence materially disadvantages her and was very, very difficult as a child. So this probably would not have been a good situation for Couya either.
If you broaden the question to ANY other family completely divorced from the circumstances of her birth, yeah it definitely could have been better. But in her case it's like either "Life of grotesque socioeconomic privilege but in an abusive household" or "Life of profound socioeconomic disadvantages in a household that Probably wouldn't have been this abusive but certainly wouldn't be healthy". There wasn't really a good option for her.
#I think I've overemphasized the Social consequences of adultery/bastard children and underemphasized that committing#or abetting adultery is Illegal and punished pretty severely#But in this case nothing about Couya's birth was considered 'adultery' by societal definition and in being formally claimed by her#father (with no reason to question that he Is her father) the rest of her family is obligated to treat her as full kin wrt familial#obligations and inheritance#Livya Haidamane was also expected to fully behave as her mother and like. This happened after suffering through very difficult and#traumatic pregnancies. Delivering a premature son and watching him be euthanized. Then her husband IMMEDIATELY#knocks up a servant and most people around her are kind of like 'yeah not a great thing to do but I get it' because she was Only able#to push out two relatively healthy kids. And then she has to treat the Living Embodiment of all this as her daughter who happens#to also be an extremely difficult child.#This kind of changed the whole trajectory of her life and was not something she had Any means of processing or coming to terms with#and instead Coped with by severely emotionally abusing said child and pitting her against her disappointing son while idolizing her#eldest daughter thus contributing to the production of three really fucked up adults.#Also note that 'claiming a child' overlaps with but is not the same thing as 'raising a child in your household'#A claimed child takes the father's family name and is considered legal kin. This has very practical applications and means that#you and the rest of your family have lifelong legal and honor-based familial obligations to this child.#A father (or grandfather) may deign to raise a bastard without claiming them which can provide physical security but does not#have Kinship and its structure of familial obligations backing it. So these two situations can be materially different and affect#the trajectory of a child's life.
