As a cult survivor I have a lot of thoughts about Nahyuta.
Disclaimer: The cult I was in was not that bad in the grand scheme of things. I’m not fully through Spirit of Justice, but there will be some spoilers.
People say Nahyuta is boring but as someone who’s been in a cult I have to say that’s the furthest from the truth if you just take a moment and look at who he is and how he acts.
Khurainism is a religion. The Ga’ran regime is a cult.
Nahyuta used to be part of the Defiant Dragons. He used to be passionately fighting against the oppressive regime in Khura’in, but then something changed.
He was basically brainwashed by this cult into believing that everyone else is a lowly half-wit or the like that’s destined to rot in hell for eternity when they die, even his own family. Something cults do sometimes is try to turn you against the world, make you not trust it and see every opposition as further proof you are in the right. In this instance, it’s even gotten so far as to say that any insult against Nahyuta, the Ga’ran regime, the justice system, or anything like that is heresy against Khurainism. He’s been isolated from everyone, including his family. He refuses to acknowledge his relation to Apollo. He turned against his own father despite previously also being a rebel. He’s an absolute cunt to everyone and everything that opposes him. But it’s not his fault he’s like this, he was conditioned to be this way by a religious cult that wants total control over everything.
I want to talk to him. I want to tell him that there’s more out there than what’s in his little bubble. I want to help him realize he can ask for help. I want him to think about his relationship with the Holy Mother, and if his current way of doing things is truly what she would have wanted. I want him to know that his religion is being used against him to make him be someone other than who he really is. I want him to know that when he decides to leave, that there are people out there who love him and will accept him with open arms. I want him to figure out who he is outside of the cult of Ga’ran. I want to give him a hug.
Nahyuta isn’t boring. He’s just being brainwashed by a cult.

i think people don't think hard enough about the state of the ace attorney family tree
bonus worse version with fanon in it and looser definitions of "dubiously canon" because i think its fun:

Have you ever stopped to think about how most of Trucy's family has disappeared on her? I have. All the time, every time.
Fun (for me, emotionally devastating for you) fact! Depending on when you look at Zak's portrait in the WAA office in Apollo Justice, Trucy has different things to say about it. At first she says it's her favorite magician. If you look at it during early Serenade, she says he disappeared one day and never reappeared. Then, if you look at it when Valant is there, it's revealed that it's her daddy (her first one) and Trucy. If you look at it during the final case, she actively sounds incredibly sad about her father being missing but pastes on that maybe he'll come back.
Adding in that the only time Trucy talks about her mom she says something along the lines of her disappearing during a magic act and "getting lost on the way back", there's something actually so fucked up by how the sheer existence of a disappearing act in a magic show is tied very heavily with abandonment.
So Apollo goes to Khura'in and—
Anyway lysm Truce. Sorry you got triple abandonment issues. I'm smothering you in kisses.

absolutely no way apollo justice knows his birthday. he was the only thing to survive the sahdmadhis' house fire, thalassa disappeared immediately, and dhurke didn't even know jove's real name for 2 decades. god knows how he even immigrated to america without a birth certificate or a passport or like.. anything?? he does not know shit, they probably forged his documents and gave him a fake birthday and now he just celebrates that, unable to shake the empty feeling that its probably not the right date and he will never know for sure. all of his documentation is full of fake information that he cant even amend and he will just have to live with that

Things that just happen to Apollo Justice
father is murdered when he's an infant.
raised through early childhood as a son of the leader of a group of guerrilla terrorist lawyers.
abandoned by his guerrilla terrorist lawyer surrogate father to live in a country he's never seen.
makes it to adulthood and becomes a lawyer, only to be hired by a lawyer who is secretly a murderer.
his idol Phoenix Wright manipulates and uses him as a pawn to take down his enemy (Apollo's murder lawyer boss).
as a result of Wright's scheme, Apollo loses his job and can't find one for six months, forcing him to take a job under the same man who manipulated and used him.
accidentally defends his mother in court, who is secretly alive. She knows who he is, but he and Wright scheme not to tell either him or his sister.
the one best friend he made after being abandoned in the US is murdered, which triggers a mental breakdown.
six months after his mental breakdown, his surrogate father, whom he hasn't seen since being abandoned, comes to the US to beg Apollo to defend him of a murder charge.
Apollo agrees to defend his surrogate father from the murder charge, at the risk of his own life due to the law of the country, only to discover that his father doesn't even need defending because he's already dead and has been a ghost the whole time.
Apollo has a second mental breakdown and understandably refuses to return to the US.

( Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice spoilers ahead! )
Trucy making the effort to ensure Apollo and Dhurke spend time together during the first part of Turnabout Revolution was a cute little goofy Trucy moment at the time but upon reflection it ends up being a little sad in context.
This is a girl whose father abandoned her for years, and that same father dies before they can meet again. Is it any wonder that Trucy sees Apollo and Dhurke’s situation and pushes for it to go better for them?
(How does it affect her, I wonder, to find out that Dhurke died before meeting Apollo again as well? What does she think of how Dhurke’s main desire upon getting a second chance was to see his left behind son one last time? Does she ever think that, if Zak got the same opportunity via spirit medium, he may have come to see her?)

Have you played SOJ yet? When you do, I want you to think about what if Apollos dad just didn’t die
Played it twice, in fact, haha. I will assume you're talking about Jove and not Dhurke!
Presumably, Apollo would've just grown up as normal... well, as normal as a life one could have with a professional magician mother and a travelling musician father.
This would also have the odd effect of possibly nullifying a lot of the plot relevant to the Gramaryes, as Trucy wouldn't exist & Magnifi couldn't just send his injured daughter to Borginia (I would assume Jove would either know about it immediately or find out himself, knowing that he's probably just as tenacious as his son).
This may mean Phoenix wouldn't get disbarred, and the plot from 2019 onwards would go in whatever wack-ass direction. Maybe no dark age of the law! Since the SL-9 incident wasn't connected to any of that, though, the whole deal with Athena and Blackquill might still happen.
Screwing with sort of... root events in the AA universe is always fun, to realize just how much plot it would mess up haha

See, Phoenix, this is what happens when you don't tell your adopted children that they do, in fact, share genetics:
One of their other adopted fathers who is not you shows up at your place of business (that has a portrait of the other's biological dad hanging on the wall), and then starts shipping your children, and your daughter will go along with it because she doesn't know any better, and then I scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" a lot at my Switch.
