I’m curating an exhibit that celebrates the powerful connection between sci-fi, fantasy, and LGBTQIA2+ identity formation &
I want you to be a part of it.
To the incredible queer artists of Tumblr: your fanart, your stories, your perspectives are extraordinary. Your work isn’t just art—it’s a testament to how these genres help us understand, embrace, and express who we are. It’s time for your voice to shine, to be seen, shared, and remembered by a larger audience.
Through interviews with podcasters, actors, and fans of beloved shows and books, I’ve seen firsthand how these stories create acceptance and inclusion—not just within our communities, but in the world around us. Now, I want to showcase your contributions to that legacy. If you’d like your art and story featured in this exhibit, message me!
Let’s celebrate the impact of sci-fi and fantasy together and show the world how these stories have shaped us.

Just to be clear, when we say we want a Star Trek : Legacy, the legacy in question in Saffi gallivanting around the galaxy with their adopted daughter Sidney La Forge, not Jack Crusher-Picard whining and getting himself in trouble AGAIN (or being put to the test by Q, this is beyoung unoriginal)

I am way too proud of this meme. What I'm doing to get past my Seven/Raffi worries. Sure maybe I'm worried for nothing but I don't care. I need this lol.

So far 2024 is playing out far too similar to what DS9 predicted, and definitely looks worse than what "Picard" showed us.
At least Cristobal Rios wasn't accused of eating pets. And the politicians during the Bell Riots were at least willing to come to a ceasefire agreement. The sanctuary Seven and Raffi passed through looked far too close to home.
Is this one of Q's practical jokes?

Star Trek has always been behind the times when it goes to gender identity and queerness. The few half-hearted morsels they give the audience, they immediately screw up.
Kirk and Spock could not be more queer coded if they tried, but never once is it acknowledged. They are the literal archetype for mlm slash.
Conversion Therapy works, apparently, because Riker's lover decides she is mentally ill for identifying as a woman in an agender society, and voluntarily undertakes the conversion therapy to fit back into her society.
Beverly just can't seem to bring herself to be with her lover when her lover changes gender.
Jadzia Dax and her former wife cannot be together because ~rules~.
Julian Bashir and Garak are obviously having it off, but the producers felt so threatened they forced Garak (Andrew Robinson was 51 at the time) to have a girlfriend, Ziyal- a character who was a literal teenager.
Jadzia Dax (a perfect trans metaphor in sci-fi) is killed brutally after her wedding. Bury your gays. And DS9 is probably the most positive of the Trek shows when it comes to LGTBQIA+ themes.
Kira is coded as bi, but only when she's evil or under the influence of a dangerous something.
Quark is open when his waiter (whom he thinks is a man) professes love, nice. But also has a storyline where they literally do a sex change for comedy.
Sulu is gay in the reboot (yay!) but we barely get anything of it.
I cannot speak on Discovery as I have not watched it yet, but I know there are gay characters and that their relationships are explored. Great! But cannot speak to how they are represented. Sorry. Please feel free to chime in and let me know how Discovery handles queerness, as I've heard very mixed reviews.
Seven and Raffi are repeatedly separated, either by plot or construction of filming. they are constantly mistreated, pushed aside, and given storylines about pain. And considering how the women are treated on Picard, I would not be shocked if at least one of these women are killed or they are permanently separated at the end of the show.
Mariner is bisexual, but note that her same-sex relationship was in the past where it's not a threat.
No queer characters on Voyager- Seven is represented as completely hetero when the topic of dating comes up, she ONLY investigates the potential men as partners.
No queer characters on Enterprise. Closest we get is an m-preg story, which goes nowhere.
I love you, Star Trek, but we deserve more. There's a lot you do well. Making space for Queer people all across the rainbow to be seen and recognised is not one of them. Do better.
We Are Here.

At the end of the day, I am just a straight cis girl, so take my words with a pinch of salt but everything I have learned of Season 3 Saffi so far makes it sound like the most homophobic sapphic ship in existence 💀
Like, why is Seven and Raffi's relationship still stuck in the "yeah, so we broke up" phase? Wasn't that the exact same arc of their relationship in the last season? Why are we treading the same path again? Like, I do understand on-again-off-again relationships and see their potential but this.... doesn't sound like that. This sounds more like "off again for 95% of any given season, on again at the literal last minute when the writers remember about us." Why couldn't this season have shown their relationship in a new phase? How are viewers supposed to care about a relationship if they are never seen together in the first place? Why are we supposed to be the ones to fill in the gaps instead of the writers? I have literally read fanfics with better chemistry between these two when the authors had nothing but a single scene of dialogue exchange and some (mission important) consensual hand tying to go with. And then these writers, at the end of the day, will pat themselves on the back for doing the bare minimum in "representation"

Ever wondered how hyperfocus can be a superpower? Welcome to my graduate school research, where I’m diving deep into the glorious realm of 90s sci-fi.
Picture this: while others are binge-watching reality TV, I’m knee-deep in the philosophical dilemmas of Star Trek and the intricate politics of Babylon 5. One minute I’m analyzing the ethics of the Prime Directive, and the next, I’m lost in a conspiracy that makes today’s headlines look like child’s play.
Next thing I know, I’m evaluating queer theory through the lens of Susan Ivanova and Talia Winters, dissecting their nuanced relationship dynamics. It’s like a sci-fi symposium in my brain! From there, I’m roadmapping how Jadzia Dax paved the way for characters like Seven of Nine and Raffi Musiker to explore their vibrant, complex queer relationships.
In a world where hyperfocus is often seen as a distraction, In this academic universe, we’re all just one bizarre plot twist away from enlightenment. 🛸

“Best Trek in ages, Twitter says”, you say…
I repeat this because I would like to know if the wider Trek family on Tumblr is aware of how much show runner Terry Matalas is abusing female and female LGBT people (and in my experience Saffi fans) within the fandom?
How may of us have received odd responses from him?
How many of us have experienced that moment where he has inserted himself into our Twitter conversations, conversations he was neither mentioned nor tagged in, only to have an insult or jab directed our way followed immediately by a block?
I’m sorry but the toxic, sexist, homophobic, misogynistic, snow runner MUST be called out.
In the last week I have seen fans comparing this guy to JESUS (I’m not religious) while he snipes at his female and LGBT female fans and this is not acceptable.
This dude makes wonderful Trek but I warn those of you on Twitter, this man is a toxic bully who is NOT OKAY.
Also…. If you have ever been on the receiving end of his toxic behaviour, please believe you have done absolutely nothing wrong. It is him, not you.
So Picard wrote off all their diverse new characters (except Raffi and Seven) and added two new white men, who are both suffering.
And added more pain to Will and Jean-Luc.
We briefly get Beverly's feelings (and Gates is phenomenal) and then it's all about the pain of white men.
And this is the show everyone's excited about. Best trek in ages, Twitter says.
Because the narrative is back where they are comfortable? Centered around white men. (So far very heterosexual white men).
Seven, Beverly, Deanna...they get good lines but they're all orbiting the storylines of the male characters.
Radfi gets to suffer but that is what her character does. She suffers.
Even Vadic has a male boss.
