I hate the modern girl power push for women warriors & girls who fight so fucking much I can't stand it.
you wanna know why there historically weren't many female warriors? because being a warrior is fucking stupid! fighting and murdering people is a stupid caveman ass way to solve problems! you know what's infinitely more important and worthwhile than being good at killing other humans? knowing how to grow and prepare food, knowing how to make clothing, knowing how to build and create and invent, knowing how to make medicine and treat injuries and heal. knowing how to write! one of the first novels was written by a woman! murasaki shikibu, 1000 years ago!
there have been female farmers and seamstresses and inventors and healers for ages but for some reason that doesn't mean anything, y'all want them to have been killers to REALLY have done something worthwhile.
"women can be violent & merciless & bloodthirsty too 🥰" yeah we can but why the fuck would we WANT to be? why should anyone want to be?
#I hate the girlboss kickass pro-violence trend so so much#it's so ugly#related: the anti-romance push#love and sex and intimate tender connection is fucking beautiful and important but that's a rant for another time

Being so against shipping that you literally strip characters of who they are is so wild to me. Like you are so mad people see the obvious chemistry between two people that you would take those characters and make them completely unrecognizable. Adding romance or a storyline related to love does not diminish or lessen the story. Making characters who support each other, push each other, rely on each other, then being upset that people enjoy these two characters and want them together is insane. Anti shipping culture feels so misogynistic and anti fan culture as well. Like you want people to be so against a ship that you would rather have character assassination. All this to say:
PUT THE LOVER GIRLS IN THE WRITERS ROOM AGAIN

Heathers (1989)

"If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?"
"...Probably."
[TRIGGER WARNING: The movie is about murder, suicide, depression, anxiety and bullying, and it's a Rated-R movie from 1989, so SA is going to keep coming up. I'm going to be referencing all of that in this review. Also I'm a gay man and will be teasing people who have made this movie their personality, so tap out now if you and your cool vinyl collection can't deal with that.]
The movie starts as a fun black comedic take-down of saccharine 80s John Hughes teen romance movies. New-kid-in-school badboy edgelord JD, and repentant former wannabe cool girl Veronica, hook up and decide to live out the ultimate bullied nerd fantasy by getting revenge on Heather, Veronica's frenemy and leader of the Heathers, the most popular clique in school.
But when things go darker than Veronica planned, the comedic satire becomes a Shakespearean melodrama, as Veronica is suddenly confronted by the surreal consequences of what she's done, including realizing that the simplest solution to a problem may in fact make everything a hell of a lot worse.
I'm not going to spoil it for the 5 of you who haven't seen this yet. Everyone else (including me now) has seen it, as it is probably one of the most universally-popular Internet-culture movies there is. You've seen at least one meme from it.
Probably this one.
While a flop in 1989, it quickly became a cult movie on home media, even by the late 90s being one of those movies your older brother and his friends introduced you to to let you know they didn't think you were a lame stupid baby anymore. And it seems now with streaming it is still kind of in that spot, the older brothers with tapes being replaced by Gen X / Millennials posting about how cool it is in front of teenaged lurkers.
So how did I miss it? I WAS the older brother growing up, and I was 7 when it came out. And when I did go back and get into all the 80s movies I missed out on by being a toddler when they were new, I stumbled into the Hughes stuff, notably Pretty in Pink, which is fundamentally the movie Heathers is mocking. As cynical and jaded as I am, I'm also a fruitcake, so I love me some sappy sunny crap (if it's to a greater artistic point, which the Hughes movies are). What I knew of Heathers had me thinking it was merely a demonstration of pretentious anti "popular media" whining from the sort of people who wear outdated hats and are insufferable about punk music.
...And it totally is. But also, it's more than that. It's actually really good and smart and occasionally insightful, when it restrains itself from all the emo "I can be your devil or your angle" posturing. Which, to be fair, it also makes fun of. Before that was even a thing.
Christian Slater and Wynonna Rider have fantastic chemistry, and there's never enough of the two of them just enjoying each other's company. Even when they're arguing, it feels like a real couple going through something they'll almost certainly get over in a few hours (until they very much can't, and then they'll literally try to kill each other). Passion, is the word for it. Sardonic and low-key most of the time, but still passion. And that's always delightful.
It's well-shot and well-directed, with good uses of lighting and dynamic camera angles. There is a lot of scenes that are just two people talking, and it's never boring. Impressive for filmmakers who were, at the time, fresh-faced and working with a small budget. The style ends up being like if John Waters (no relation to Dan Waters, who wrote it) had directed Corman's Rock and Roll High School: goofy and surreal and sarcastic, but also willing to get dark and push boundaries to make a point.
All the characters - even joke side ones - are thoughtfully drawn, given emotional depth and realistic motivations, even when they're doing something stagey and broad in this highly stylized, Tim Burton-esque dark fairytale world. Wynonna Rider fought for the role against all advice, and it is perfectly in-line with the characters she played and the movies she played them in of this era, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. Maybe even Bram Stoker's Dracula, if we're talking surreal melodramatic action-horror with disco lighting.
It is a movie with lots of big ideas (probably too many), but it manages to get those across effectively. What starts as a simple teenager revenge fantasy morphs into an armchair analysis of what America does to its children - instead of nurturing them and preparing them for the adult world, it points at them and gawks, and cashes in on their fear and self-loathing and predictable self-destruction. Everyone in the cruel high school world of Heathers is both a perpetrator and a victim, desperately fighting for survival by both submitting to abuse, and then immediately turning around and heaping it on someone "beneath" them. Death here isn't genuinely mourned or reflected upon; everyone simply starts plotting how they're going to exploit this new gap in the line. And whether the victims kill themselves or are murdered only matters as far as someone can spin that into self-promotion. Even the priest at the funeral (the late great Glenn Shadix, Beetlejuice again!) uses the supposed suicide of a child as an opportunity to make a ham-fisted youth-oriented alter call.

By the end of the movie, Veronica has triumphantly decided to rise up - not merely against the popular kids and exploitative / apathetic adults - but against the entire system of unending cruelty she didn't even know she was still playing a part in when she was actively attacking it. This finally sets her at odds with JD, who is too consumed by hatred to realize that the violence he thinks is a solution is fundamentally part of the problem.
And yet, as they come to blows, Veronica is also replaying the very same game that led her to become one of the Heathers in the first place, and then turn on them: use people to secure power, they use and hurt you, so you attack them. She knows the whole system is bad and broken and wants out, and seems to acknowledge the only way out is through earnest friendships and "growing out" of being shallow and petty. But by the end of the movie, despite her rebuke of JD...has she managed it? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe the system is inescapable, and all you can hope to do is find a way to force it to work for you. And choose then to make it less cruel. Maybe.

It's not a good or happy ending, it's just an ending. But a thought-provoking one, and the movie does it well.
...Mostly. The dialogue is trying very hard to be distinctively witty, but mostly comes across like a worse version of Clueless-ese, with more gratuitous vulgarities and no kitschy charm. A writer being very proud of how smart they are, without noticing that real people don't talk like this because it's awkward and obnoxious. Everyone's dialogue is basically interchangeable, including between the kids and adults (JD and his lunatic father have a fun distinctive thing they do, but that's about it). Now, lines being awkward and obnoxious doesn't mean they aren't eminently meme-able. In fact, that usually means they are. And they certainly are here. Nearly every scene has a memorable bon mot that can be endlessly parroted by people doing that so you won't notice their off-putting personality. ...I wouldn't call that a win for anyone, but it is certainly a thing.
Remember: just because someone said it in a movie, doesn't mean it's inherently funny or profound or relevant to the conversation you've currently having. And you're not suddenly smart because you found a movie quote that you think expresses your exceptional hot take. In fact, that might be a sign that your are NOT in fact smart or insightful. Just putting that out there.
Also the "mineral water is for fags" thing is only funny because it's stupid. It was stupid then. That's the point of that being in the movie, to show how stupid these podunk morons in Ohio are. Stop repeating that 'joke.' It isn't funny out of context.
Gen X. Looking at you on this one. It's just you trying to give yourselves permission to still call people "fags." Doesn't work that way.
Christian Slater claims he was "channeling Jack Nicholson for this film." Yeah, okay, dude. And for the rest of your life, all the time. He's still a good actor and very charming here, but if that "Christian Slater" thing he does annoys you, it's at 11 here.
The pacing and tone get pretty muddled after the initial black revenge comedy stuff stops, as the movie uneasily transitions to its second major focus. It stops being funny entirely for awhile, until near the end when it suddenly remembers that was supposed to be a part of this, then sitcomy stuff elbows its way in. And JD's plans post-breakup with Veronica are left vague until they suddenly aren't, and I feel like I missed something. I didn't, and there's a point to them doing it this way, but it is handled kind of confusingly.
The movie is a scaled-down version of whatever epic Greek tragicomedy the writer originally dreamed up, and the studio demanded the pitch-black orginal ending be changed. And you can kind of feel that throughout. As an R-rated movie it is a lot tamer than it feels like it should be, and I for one wish the kills were gorier and more over-the-top. That more fits the tone. Maybe that was never the original intention, but you don't do Titus Andronicus without getting gross with it, you know?
Any SA stuff is handled tactfully, and there isn't much of it, and it serves a narrative purpose. But that still feels like something that is only in here because it's 1989 and R-rated movies have to go there. And I don't feel like they really give those incidents the kind of emotional impact they should have on the victims. But again, this is a surreal world of unending cruelty, so maybe people shrug that off here. It's more my personal preference, if you're going to be gross to women in a movie (probably stop that, unless that's what the movie is about. Rape and molestation are not screenplay spices.)
The good far outweighs the bad, though. And Heathers is good, and is deservedly a timeless cult-classic for growing boys and girls, given what it deals with and how well it deals with it. It's entertaining and it makes you think, which is what good movies do. And it's endlessly meme-able, and that's okay, even if the people who meme it the most are silently warning you that they're pretentious and annoying about music. And that's only sort-of the movie's fault.

Also all the women in this movie have 9 lbs of dry fly-away hair that is just...painful. I realize this "unkempt Barbie hair" style was the best we could do at the time, but... I feel like I can hear it crunching every time they move.
Oh, and shoulder pads for days, shoulder pads FOREVER. I will never understand why the hell the 80s thought women weren't boxy enough. It was a thing.

I REALLY don’t want to make anyone panic and spiral. That’s the last thing I wanna do especially since I tend to spiral a lot myself. But since most of the ppl in this fandom know what type of game is, I want to spread awareness about this bill and I encourage others to do the same.
For any lads fans who live in Oklahoma this could maybe affect you if passed. Even if it’s just in that state it would still be bad because it could make other states follow suit.
On the surface it’s being pushed as a “protect the children/anti CP”bill that’s rlly trying to censor anything pornographic, lgbt related, or just anything these ppl label as “degenerate” even these same ppl are most likely involved in all kinds of sex scandals including ones with minors.
So no they don’t actually care about protecting children nor getting rid of CP. It doesn’t just include porn but also ROMANCE TOO. The bill quite literally violates the constitution.
But PLEASE DO NOT PANIC. THERE ARE WAYS TO STOP THIS!! Whether you live in Oklahoma or not Call and or email your reps/senators along with spreading awareness.

love at first sight / choi yeonjun

As you stepped into the building of Big Hit Entertainment, you couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. You were here for a work-related meeting, and the fact that you were about to meet and work with one of their stars, Yeonjun from TXT, was making your heart race. You had heard a lot about him, both as an artist and a person. He was known for his talent, charisma, and personality. Your assignment was to interview him for a feature article, and you were determined to get a unique perspective on this young superstar.
You walked through the hallways of the agency, greeted by the hum of creativity that filled the air. As you approached the designated room, you took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
"Come in," a voice called out from within. You pushed the door open and stepped inside, your eyes meeting the one and only Yeonjun and his manager. Yeonjun, He was sitting on a couch, engrossed in his phone, scrolling through something.
Yeonjun looked up from his phone, his deep brown eyes studying you for a moment before a polite smile crept onto his face. "You must be Y/N, here for the interview," he said, rising to his feet. He extended his hand, and you shook it, feeling a jolt of warmth at the contact.
"Yes, I'm Y/N," you replied with a friendly smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Yeonjun."
He nodded, gesturing for you to take a seat. "Likewise. Please, have a seat."
As you settled into a chair across from him, you couldn't help but admire the aura he exuded. Yeonjun was remarkably good-looking with his perfectly styled hair, sharp jawline, and that captivating twinkle in his eyes that hinted at a world of stories.
The interview started, and you were amazed at how open and eloquent he was. Yeonjun spoke passionately about his journey in the music industry, sharing insights into his experiences as an idol and his growth as an artist. You were eager to understand the artist behind the fame, and Yeonjun's initial responses had already set the tone for an engaging and insightful conversation.
You noticed the dedication in his eyes as he talked about his musical journey, so you probed further to learn more about the sources of his inspiration. "Yeonjun, could you share some of the artists or musicians who have inspired you the most on your journey? How have they influenced your own music and style?"
Yeonjun's face lit up when discussing his experiences as an idol, so you decided to delve deeper into the challenges he had faced and how he had grown through them.
But as the conversation delved into his personal life, you noticed a shift in his demeanor. He became guarded and distant, especially when the topic of romance came up.
"Yeonjun, can you tell us if you've ever experienced love or a romantic relationship?" you asked, trying to tread carefully.
He let out a short laugh, a hint of bitterness in his voice. "Love? Relationships? I've always been too busy for those things. It's not something I ever think about."
You couldn't help but wonder what had caused him to be so anti-romantic. However, you decided not to pry further and switched to a different topic. The interview continued, and as you spoke with him, you noticed how his guard gradually lowered, and he started to share more about himself.
It was during a break in the conversation that you saw a glimpse of a different side of Yeonjun. He was momentarily lost in thought, a wistful expression on his face. It was a fleeting moment, but it intrigued you. You couldn't help but wonder if there was more to the anti-romantic Yeonjun than met the eye.
The interview concluded, and as you were gathering your notes, Yeonjun leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. "Y/N, can I ask you something personal?"
Surprised by his sudden interest, you nodded. "Of course, go ahead."
He hesitated for a moment, his eyes fixed on yours, and then he spoke softly. "Have you ever met someone and felt an instant connection? Like, you couldn't explain it, but you just knew that you wanted to get to know them better?"
You blinked, taken aback by his unexpected question. "Yes, I suppose. It's happened to me before."
Yeonjun nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. "I had that feeling when you walked into this room, Y/N. It's strange, I know, especially for someone like me who's not into all that romantic stuff, but I can't help it. I felt a connection, a curiosity about you from the moment you walked in."
As the interview wrapped up, Yeonjun walked you to the door, and you exchanged contact information. The encounter left a lasting impression on both of you, and as you said your goodbyes, there was an unspoken understanding that this wouldn't be the last time you'd see each other.
Over the following weeks, you found yourself drawn to Yeonjun in ways you hadn't expected. As your conversations continued and your friendship deepened, you couldn't help but wonder if the charismatic young idol might be on the cusp of experiencing something he had sworn off - love, thanks to a chance meeting with you.

Hi!
I was slightly disappointed to find such short answers to some parts, but it was nice to see that there is a lot we seem to agree on (outside of whether to trust Jimin's words about love.... 😭).
I don’t know if it was the way I wrote or because you only answered some sections of my ask, but it seems that a lot of my thoughts were not understood or that people were projecting frustrations from other parties (tkkers, antis, insecure jkkers) onto me…
I want to make a few things clear before I delve into the responses 😃
I’m not against the “search for his inspiration/excitement with his art” theory
I don’t think that Jimin knows nothing about love in general
I am not analyzing MUSE through a shipping lens or to debunk Jikook
I am not dictating Jimin’s sexuality based on pronouns in a song
Anyways I’m going to go person by person, starting with Storm ofc!
Why is he releasing this in the military? I’d understand if he was planning on revealing a partner, but based on what Jimin, the producers, and WHO are saying, he’s single. So is he announcing that he’s looking for love once he’s discharged? Then we go back to it being assumed that he is already single… and not going to lie, that is a little strange to announce? Why make an entire album for that?
I don't think he is announcing anything exactly. Like it's not a release meant to be for an announcement. If that makes sense. He isn't trying to inform people he is single and/or ready to mingle. He is trying to share emotions and a story. Why during MS? Idk.
I don’t either necessarily, but the narrative that has been pushed by many based on his words and the song is that he is “lookin for love”, so I was wondering why he would do it this way and at this time if so (hypothetically)? I did state multiple times that I can see it as him sharing his emotions through some sort of story!
He may have used the concept of love to better articulate another deeper message
With this in mind, as well as the fact that BOTH Jimin and Namjoon talked about Jimin’s work, singing, and idol identity more than anything to do with love, made the idea that search for love = search for his inspiration/excitement with his art more possible
While Jimin still could be working through the idea of a concept about his inspiration
He could have been using the feeling of not having that excitement to compare being alone….
With SGMB, the confusion for me was more about them mentioning it being about “expressing the process” and being conceptual after I had thoughts about WHO being more personal.
I really liked your take on the title of MUSE and relating it to inspiration and the Muses of Greek Mythology. It fits in line with what we’ve seen from Jimin, as well as what I was initially expecting.
The search for his inspiration and a version of himself that he’s fully satisfied with seemed likely to be the concept of MUSE.
If he is explaining his search for inspiration through the idea of romance, that is incredibly smart and endearing of him. It shows me how much his work and art matter to him. That he’s willing to work on bettering himself (even if I thought he was already amazing) to achieve even better results that he can truly be proud of.
Hearing that MUSE was born after Jimin was so excited to work on music, especially considering the darker topics discussed in FACE, makes me so unbelievably happy. The songs ending up as upbeat and hopeful, even romantic, really does make sense in that context.
It's true that conceptual doesn’t have to mean fake, but the question I’m often left with is “In what way is this album conceptual?” Is it his search for inspiration and excitement of his work through a romantic lens OR is it his search for his person through a made up love story?
So is he not LOOKING FOR A WOMAN? Or is he not SINGLE?
Is the album not about his LOVE LIFE but his work?
Because ANY of those would actually make more sense to misunderstand.
If it’s directly about Jimin and not just the concept of the song.
Jimin mentions that when he meets up with friends, they’re all feeling similarly flat. I wonder if that flatness is towards not being in a relationship or feeling uninspired with life and/or work? He goes on to say it’s not a sad or scary feeling, but it’s also not exciting. This could go for either concept (Love or Work) to be honest.
I’ve read through multiple analyses of the MV since my first viewing, and I’ve noticed a lot more details that are somewhat questionable.
Auto Calibration being the main one as it flashes on screen after Jimin dances with men and then leads into him dancing with women. This does give some queer vibes, and makes me interested in what “story” Jimin had in mind with WHO as the choreo also has similar vibes too.
Jimin also keeps mentioning the choreo feeling like a short film or musical, which makes all the film (play, pause, rewind) details in the MV fit.
His conversations with his friends come up again, about how there are few instances to feel really strong emotions and him thinking “Should I start feeling more passion?” while making WHO, and that the writers of WHO worded the story he wanted to tell in such a lovely way.
The choreo has a lot of fun theatrical elements as he seems to want to express a lot of picturesque scenes, and the dance suits him while being simpler and fresh. But he’s still concerned about how to express the emotions for this song, as it isn't a sad song, but it does kind of become one towards the end.
With the amount of story elements, I’m considering the song being more of a way to describe his feelings about needing passion in his life than a detailed recount of his “failing love life”. It’s still his thoughts and feelings, but maybe expressed in a more digestible way for the audience.
“He’s an Idol, of course he’ll say he’s single and doesn’t know what love is!” Ok, but why mention it at all?
Because with the concept and theme being what they are, it would be discussed to hell and back (low-key hello is us in this post) and it's "damage control" regardless of how I feel about that, it's most likely what it is. No matter how annoying
While I understand that, it does feel really weird and wrong just chopping up him, potentially, expressing his feelings as “damage control” though…
I could maybe see Jimin not being out to his producers (or more so with his possible relationship with Jungkook), but it’s also not hard to just take him at his word (via the producers) that he’s unfamiliar with romantic love.
I personally don't form my opinions too much based on things that are second hand. I still take them into account for sure. But I don't put too much stock into things that are via someone else on behalf of any of BTS. Because really, they can just say anything. Now don't take this as me dismissing things said, because I'm not. I'm just clarifying for everyone that I form 85% of my opinions ONLY on things that are direct from Jimin himself and based directly on Jimin's actions. Things are going to be influenced by personal bias always as well too
I’ve stated that the things the producers have said don’t really make sense in line with what Jimin has said, which is part of my confusion. But at the same time, saying “the producers are lying/wrong” when they actually know and have spoken to Jimin, is a little weird for me.
But I'm honestly more and more confused the more people talk about this album.
The producers say the album is about looking for some imaginary woman, while every song other than WHO is gender neutral. Even with WHO, we are shown a version that was gender neutral.
So why is Jimin not following that?
Most (if not all) of what I hear him talk about in relation to MUSE is gender neutral. I don’t have an issue with Jimin making love songs about women, but make it consistent with the rest of the album that THEY (Jimin and Producers) wrote then!
I could maybe see Jimin not being out to his producers (or more so with his possible relationship with Jungkook)
Now @roamingwildflower13
It is not about blurring the lines between what we think of his relationship status, it's about him as an artist. It's not fair to take his work and analyse it through a shipping lens, or as if he is Taylor Swift. He might have set a precedent for this with Face, by saying it is personal, but even then, he never gave explicit detail on those songs.
I was simply just trying to understand the concept of the album, and was confused if it was to be viewed conceptually as a whole or just the tracks that Jimin wrote (everything but WHO), after things said by both Jimin and the producers.
The only time I thought about Jikook in relation to MUSE was after contemplating if WHO was Jimin’s real feelings and if he might not be in a relationship like I had assumed.
For me also, his conversation with Namjoon is of more weight than anything else said in the recording studio, and by producers. As Stormy said, second hand narratives are not from his own words, they are an interpretation. And that is not even taking into account any translation issues, or the fact that footage from the behinds of the recording is cut in certain places, the conversation jumbled.
I have stated that Jimin and Namjoon’s conversation in MMM is a good explanation for the “work/inspiration” theory.
I went back to watch MMM immediately, and was almost horrified at how I managed to miss or maybe interpret parts of Jimin and Namjoon’d conversation differently
With this in mind, as well as the fact that BOTH Jimin and Namjoon talked about Jimin’s work, singing, and idol identity more than anything to do with love, made the idea that search for love = search for his inspiration/excitement with his art more possible
Like I said above, after going back and paying attention to what they were saying (I literally typed out the entire video to go over 💀), the search for his inspiration and a version of himself that he’s fully satisfied with seemed likely to be the concept of MUSE.
But Jimin and the producers mentioning Jimin’s difficulty with talking about romantic love confused me.
So I know a lot of people have been using the “pretend to go through experiences I haven’t had before” to explain the “looking for love” vibes of WHO, but my understanding of Jimin saying this was that it’s towards the first five tracks (where he sings about having a crush and falling in love). While both relate to it being a concept, it being about the rest of the album (the love part) does make it sound like he’s currently single.
With SGMB, the confusion for me was more about them mentioning it being about “expressing the process” and being conceptual after I had thoughts about WHO being more personal.
Now I wonder if they meant the process of falling in love.
The producers say the album is about looking for some imaginary woman, while every song other than WHO is gender neutral. Even with WHO, we are shown a version that was gender neutral.
Most (if not all) of what I hear him talk about in relation to MUSE is gender neutral. I don’t have an issue with Jimin making love songs about women, but make it consistent with the rest of the album that THEY (Jimin and Producers) wrote then!
According to the producers, the song was born out of Jimin having trouble relating to a love serenade they were trying to write initially, and thus ends up asking himself if he can ever really love someone. With the song apparently being about the reality of feeling lonely and melancholy, and asking yourself where the person for you is , it does make me think that he hasn’t been in a long term romantic relationship for years, if it’s directly about Jimin and not just the concept of the song.
I do want to take Jimin and Jungkook’s words and actions seriously, however part of what has been said about MUSE and WHO from Jimin and his producers, does make me question if I (and the rest of us) were mistaken about what the nature of their bond is.
That aside, Jimin getting ‘embarrassed’ over this is not really anything to go by, he could get shy when trying to explain to strangers, any part of his concept or feelings. Again, he is not going to tell strangers his innermost thoughts, or the actual truth of it all.
That section was me explaining WHY I felt confused/concerned about these statements Jimin made at the time of watching the Behind The Scenes for MUSE/WHO. These aren’t necessarily my final opinions nor do I think my assumptions are completely correct. My entire ask was just me going over my genuine thought process with MUSE. Not with exact conclusions, because I’m still confused.
I wanted to articulate exactly what my thoughts and concerns were, especially since this is a more serious topic regarding Jimin’s work and art, but I don’t think it came off that well before.
I’m not stuck on any of my assumptions or thoughts being the “correct” way to interpret MUSE
Looking back now, I don’t think I presented WHY I was so conflicted after that video that well in my initial ask.
I’m still confused, but I do think after reviewing things that there is more to MUSE than I think. Especially with stories and theatrics being involved in so much of the concept.
I really just want to know what MUSE is about. The misunderstanding thing was fun for like a couple days, now it just makes me anxious and stressed. But maybe it was supposed to be like this 😔
So, if you listen to his words to Joon, ‘Who’ became the song that reflected how he was feeling about his work, his passion, after Face. I think he recorded ‘Who’ in April when he was in NYC, but it also could have been March, when he was there for Fallon, but I think April. So, those were his words to Joon, that no he wasn’t really feeling ‘happy’ about his work at that time, after Face promo had ended, he literally explained this. Again, taking what he said to a close and trusted friend, about what was said in a recording studio with a translator and strangers, and second hand from producers.
BOTH the producers and I are talking about Jimin being happy about working on FACE, not MUSE. The darker topics discussed in FACE had me slightly concerned for Jimin, so to hear that he was actually happy while making FACE was relieving. That happiness about creating FACE being what inspired MUSE is part of why I am actually more committed to the “search for inspiration/excitement for work” theory. The only reason that I had/have doubts was/is Jimin and the producers mentioning Jimin not being able to relate to romantic love.
Hearing that MUSE was born after Jimin was so excited to work on music, especially considering the darker topics discussed in FACE, makes me so unbelievably happy. The songs ending up as upbeat and hopeful, even romantic, really does make sense in that context.
Pdogg: A lot of people felt depressed during the pandemic, and Jimin was no exception. He took his passion and appetite while holed up at home and channeled it into his music. I remember Jimin was so happy being in LA to record “Set Me Free Pt. 2” in the warm, sunny weather. (laughs) So it seems like working on FACE helped him feel better and helped lift his feelings. The idea behind MUSE was to express what he had felt then. That’s why all the songs ended up being upbeat and hopeful, even romantic.
While Jimin still could be working through the idea of a concept about his inspiration, when he says “It feels like someone found my diary”, to me it really did sound more personal to him than expected.
With this in mind, as well as the fact that BOTH Jimin and Namjoon talked about Jimin’s work, singing, and idol identity more than anything to do with love, made the idea that search for love = search for his inspiration/excitement with his art more possible.
If he is explaining his search for inspiration through the idea of romance, that is incredibly smart and endearing of him. It shows me how much his work and art matter to him. That he’s willing to work on bettering himself (even if I thought he was already amazing) to achieve even better results that he can truly be proud of.
With the amount of story elements, I’m considering the song being more of a way to describe his feelings about needing passion in his life than a detailed recount of his “failing love life”. It’s still his thoughts and feelings, but maybe expressed in a more digestible way for the audience.
Then the Behinds for Muse dropped….
Which led to my first ask:
https://stormblessed95.tumblr.com/post/758126579695190016/hi-ok-so-i-just-rewrote-everything-i-wanted-to
However Jimin talking about looking for love and not experiencing that, does make me question Jikook if this album is supposed to be speaking from Jimin’s personal experiences and/or thoughts.
While Jimin still could be working through the idea of a concept about his inspiration, when he says “It feels like someone found my diary”, to me it really did sound more personal to him than expected.
Yes, technically he does LIVE ALONE or he could have been using the feeling of not having that excitement to being alone….
But I'm curious as to what he meant by “everyone’s just living alone, right?” within the context of WHO, MUSE, or even in general?
With SGMB, the confusion for me was more about them mentioning it being about “expressing the process” and being conceptual after I had thoughts about WHO being more personal.
Now I wonder if they meant the process of falling in love.
I think part of the reason that it's important to me to know if Jimin is legitimately saying he’s single, is that I do want to respect him and his words.
Add Letter added into that, and I am not going to state anything other than, no it is not a song for fans, it is a ‘fan’ song, for the person doing background vocals. Go talk to a wall.
First of all, watch your tone.
Secondly, I was implying that Letter wasn’t for fans 💀
Why is Closer Than This on the album? I’m desperately hoping it’s not some sick way of saying “At least I got ARMY”..... and then what is Letter for?
Especially because Jimin refers to “Closer Than This” as a letter to fans even though he already wrote one "for them"…
JM: (Closer Than This) Just think of it as a letter I’m writing to you all. It’s a song just for you.
The show being released not a month after Muse worked the opposite way to me than what you are saying in your ask. It solidified everything I already knew/thought.
I’m confused as to what you assume I thought of Are You Sure?!
Part of me was also curious if my thoughts on MUSE would change how I saw Jikook in Are You Sure. Honestly my surprise when I didn’t find anything that pointed to them breaking up or being just platonic, was nothing compared to seeing that my opinion was uncommon to quite a few in the Jikook Community….
So no, anon, Jimin does know what love is, he actually seems to love with his whole being, and it is important to him to value and care for people, he’s said this before.
NOWHERE IN MY ASK DID I SAY THAT JIMIN DOES NOT KNOW WHAT LOVE IN GENERAL IS!
I WAS REFERRING TO ROMANTIC LOVE 💀💀
Then as the track titles were revealed to be more romantic sounding, it felt like he may have used the concept of love to better articulate another deeper message. Or that he chose to write about a fictional love and focused more on vocal and production styles, in a similar way to what Jungkook did with Golden.
While watching the MMM video for the first time, I was confused because Jimin had mentioned MUSE being more vague (or conceptual) than FACE but that WHO was his “feelings” after the previous tracks. Ultimately, I took that as him wanting to write about love but not having current personal experiences to pull from, so he decided to make up a fictional love story/crush, and then WHO comes at the end being like “actually that’s not true. i’m not in love, though i want to be.”
I’m happy though that even while in this search (whether for inspiration, satisfaction, or love) that he’s still able to be happy and content with where he is at and who he is.
It's true that conceptual doesn’t have to mean fake, but the question I’m often left with is “In what way is this album conceptual?” Is it his search for inspiration and excitement of his work through a romantic lens OR is it his search for his person through a made up love story?
The idea of most of the album being love songs about a made up relationship/crush just to be like “I’m actually single and alone!”, does frustrate me a little. Like he’s an Idol, it’s already assumed that he’s single.
I could maybe see Jimin not being out to his producers (or more so with his possible relationship with Jungkook), but it’s also not hard to just take him at his word (via the producers) that he’s unfamiliar with romantic love.
With the amount of story elements, I’m considering the song being more of a way to describe his feelings about needing passion in his life than a detailed recount of his “failing love life”. It’s still his thoughts and feelings, but maybe expressed in a more digestible way for the audience.
If he is being up front about his romantic past, then I really do hope he finds his person, whoever they might be.
I know Jimin, and all idols, needs to be careful when talking about love. It’s why I’m so confused as to why this concept, and why now? Though with Jin stating that he wrote Falling for someone, maybe this is just part of BTS being more honest and open.
A bit of mystery goes a long way when all is said and done. Potentially Knowing everything about every lyrics meaning, and picking apart the song, takes away from that somewhat. And as above, we may never know the truth of it all, in fact that is more likely, than ever knowing where Jimin is concerned honestly.
I was using what both Jimin and the Producers said about the song to form somewhat of an opinion on what the song is about and/or how it was created.

Really the only things I analyzed were the MV and the choreo.
Auto Calibration being the main one as it flashes on screen after Jimin dances with men and then leads into him dancing with women. This does give some queer vibes, and makes me interested in what “story” Jimin had in mind with WHO as the choreo also has similar vibes too.
Jimin mentioning people instead of just women as potential options when passing by is also interesting, especially when he has mostly talked about this album gender neutrally.
The billboard with SOMEONE’S EYES dropping after Jimin sings “Who is my heart waiting for?” does seem as though it's an answer for Jimin, or maybe others. Especially when WHO with NO QUESTION MARK and Keep Going are written on it. In my opinion, it does resemble Jungkook's eyes. But I find it hard to take it as a promotion of some sort when it quite literally interrupts the MV, seemingly for no reason, instead of being a poster in the back.
Then of course, there is the insane potential connection of Taeyang, someone Jimin is a known fan of and is now friends with, showcasing his then girlfriend (now wife) on a billboard in a MV….
During a Chorus part Jimin joins up with SIX OTHER MEN. I don’t know if this is supposed to be a BTS reference or just formations. But what is the point of having SIX when there is only FIVE later for the girls vs boys part? Why not just keep the seven men (including Jimin) and have seven girls? Where’d the other guy even go?
Next in Verse Two when Jimin sings about “taking her places they ain’t found yet, putting it all on the line, and being that someone she can count on”, he dances with two men. Why? Would it not be better for him to do some sort of partner choreo here?
In the bridge, he repeats “who is my heart, heart waiting for?” as he passes by BOTH WOMEN AND MEN. Sure he only tries to match with women, but he’s a kpop idol and the song uses female pronouns, so that’s expected. I’m sure the male dancers were most likely included just to have it look better, but considering Jimin saying people when talking about it, the gender neutral version of the song, and that Jimin was involved with the choreo, it’s something to consider!
Jimin also keeps mentioning the choreo feeling like a short film or musical, which makes all the film (play, pause, rewind) details in the MV fit.
I am a bit disappointed that he, once again, warned fans about him interacting with women in the choreo. Even to the point of saying “moments that you might find uncomfortable” and “please don’t be too disappointed”
The choreo has a lot of fun theatrical elements as he seems to want to express a lot of picturesque scenes, and the dance suits him while being simpler and fresh. But he’s still concerned about how to express the emotions for this song, as it isn't a sad song, but it does kind of become one towards the end.
And if THAT is what you’re going to use against me….
Which is why to me the ‘Who’ mv is important. Jimin told Joon he almost wanted a simple shoot – and I guess in a way it is, it is him dancing west side story style in a dark street. But the narrative of the mv is the giveaway. The color scheme, and the little details most people (solos) miss. The Screen is less about whose eyes they are (the eyes are most certainly a man’s eyes) but how it stops and changes Jimin’s direction and rewinds the plot. it is done with a purpose, and is almost crucial to the plot, it is not random. It is not about spoiling a future project, it is about how it changes Jimin’s direction, the tape rewinds and he goes back to the start, and voila, he no longer interacts with the female dancers, he walks past them. She is not “Who” his heart is waiting for…..
Next @akd06
As for anon, I feel kind of bad for you that you are trying so hard to understand Jimin's art, like it is an autobiographical book. No art is that way. It is always subjective.
Did you read my ask or??
Basically I thought MUSE was conceptual, Jimin AND the producers said things about Jimin in regards to romantic love that made me question if he’s been in a relationship (if they pertain directly to Jimin and not just a concept), so I decided to look more in depth at the album, WHO, the MV, and the choreo to see a better picture of what Jimin was potentially trying to say.
And there is no way I would ever use a pronoun to prove or disprove anything, especially in a song, that is their job. I hope for you that you can relax and just enjoy their beautiful voices and kind souls.💜
UMMMM????
I know people (antis) are going on about pronouns, but honestly I already think Jimin is queer or bisexual, so writing a love song about a woman or with female pronouns doesn’t negate that (especially since we’ve seen a version where the lyrics were gender neutral). Until Jimin outright says he has never and will never have romantic feelings towards a man, I’m under the assumption that he may be bisexual (regardless of if he wants a male or female partner).
I KNOW IT’S LONG, BUT DON’T SPEAK UNLESS YOU’VE READ MY ASK FULLY PLS 😃
I’ve seen the many anons that were spamming your and other Jikookers’ inboxes the second WHO and MUSE released because “OMG Jimin said she/her!! He’s single and looking for a woman to love!” became the newest narrative.
While I do think it would be perfectly okay for him to want a female partner, it does make me slightly upset and sad, that people resorted to being homophobic and honestly misogynistic as a response. There is a way to discuss Jimin's potential romantic partners without being nasty to queer fans or possibly invalidating Jimin’s identity (especially since it is not likely that he’d ever fully come out (if he is queer/bi) in the way most people think nor want, given where he lives and his line of work).
Even the way people were talking about women was questionable. Going on about how it is outrageous for Jimin to deny himself the chance to be with a woman, have a biological family, and overall is wasting himself on Jungkook (if they are in a romantic relationship).
Making women out to be objects for men to use and only worth making/raising families, the homophobic rhetoric towards the longevity of queer relationships and same sex parents, as well as the blatant disrespect to Jungkook (that he’s “not enough” or “not right” for Jimin). If someone thinks that Jikook are nothing but platonic friends, that is perfectly fine. But to degrade their bond, as well as Jimin and Jungkook’s characters, is just unnecessarily cruel.
So is he not LOOKING FOR A WOMAN? Or is he not SINGLE?
Is the album not about his LOVE LIFE but his work?
Because ANY of those would actually make more sense to misunderstand.
Auto Calibration being the main one as it flashes on screen after Jimin dances with men and then leads into him dancing with women. This does give some queer vibes, and makes me interested in what “story” Jimin had in mind with WHO as the choreo also has similar vibes too.

Now I’m a little confused on where I stand, and knowing what MUSE and WHO are about in relation to Jimin would help. I know you obviously can’t know exactly. But I’m hoping I’ll get something other than “Jikook is real! Stop doubting them! You’re projecting your internalized homophobia!” OR “Jikook isn’t real! Jimin is straight and looking for a woman!”
@queenofsweden
Can I weigh in on the tiny part about the tarot and the devil perspective!?
Firstly, it is not that Jimin thinks his relationship is the devil, or he views it negatively in terms of his feelings, it’s that he knows it has the potential to harm them, if anything were to be exposed. And he’s right, unfortunately, it’s very likely to impact them if they were exposed.
To me in a way, this perspective could somewhat explain the need to use a song like Who, or a concept for love songs as if he’s never been in love. It’s why they are all single. Especially if they are queer they would need a way to protect that, and with the release of the show, more so. The show could have exposed them a whole lot more than it did, but I guess it helps (again sadly) that half the fandom are tkkrs, and the others are made up of homophobes and others are ignorant solos.
I personally don’t feel like it’s ok to project outcomes from tarot readings that were done without the person being read for present nor without their permission or knowledge.
I don't think this much of a reply and more of me just copy and pasting my other ask 💀
If anyone actually cares, my final thoughts with MUSE as of February 8, 2025 are that it may be about how he felt excited to work on music (FACE) detailed through the first "crush/love" tracks and then after he had difficulty post FACE promotions, WHO comes in with him still struggles with finding inspiration and love for his art.
Still confused about the not relating to romantic love part...
Thank you so much for the response Storm 💜
— (Not So) Nice MUSE Anon 🎨
In response to this post:
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, you even dated this so we really know how long I made you wait 😅 I just finally went and checked my inbox again.
This is turning less into a civil discussion and more into infighting from various sources which I am not loving getting into. So I'll post this, so you don't feel like I'm cutting you off. But I'll probably say for this particular avenue of discussion, I'm going to not post anymore.
🎨 Anon, im more than happy to continue discussing this topic with you in DMs. I'm also more than happy to post asks from you and discuss things with you over different things. I'm sorry that some of my replies back in the last post felt a little short. I only replied to the parts that I felt I had anything to say about. I didn't just want to go "ahh I see" to everything. Lol I promise I did read it and while there might've been parts that I still disagreed with partly, I felt like I didn't need to just keep repeating myself as I said most of it in our first post response and I didn't have anything new to add, Idk how else to say my thoughts other than how I already have in either our first post or the last one linked above. But I'm sorry if it came across like I misunderstood your words or didn't fully read your message. I promise I did!
As for everyone else responding, I can understand the frustration in being like "did you even read what I said" so I get that. I'm not wanting to get into any arguments with anyone or any further frustrations. I just don't have the mental bandwidth to deal with that right now. So if you want to have further correspondence with the other blogs, I'd recommend contacting them directly to continue to talk, either through DMs or if they have anons on as well there.
I still think you are nice. And I hope EVERYONE involved in this post, has a really wonderful rest of their day and hopefully we can all continue to have respectful agree to disagree conversations about things more in the future 💜💜

There’s something really cozy about how messy and imperfect you let your characters be during sex. I’m not explaining this well but it does stand out to me, and it’s beyond captivating. They don’t push themselves to conform because they think their partner expects something of them, they just. Play things by ear? Let themselves react/adapt? It’s refreshing, thank you for that. It feels real and less rehearsed.
Oof, anon, I’m sorry I missed this! I remember getting an ask expressing a similar sentiment a handful of years ago that must have been in reference to…God, maybe my Good Omens stories (book-based, because I’ve never written show-based; I’ve been in GO fandom since it cropped up on LJ ca. 2004) since it was someone talking about the way I handle my immortals as being more prone to messy, vulnerable human intimacy when so many other writers in fandom decide to lean into the more polished outer limits of what immortality might mean for sex. I’m trying to remember how I answered that through the lens of Aziraphale and Crowley, but I realize that most of the asks I’m getting at the moment are focused on Daniel and Armand.
Actually, now that I’ve paused for a few minutes to make tea and eat something (I just woke up and had to take anti-seizure medication, too; it’s a whole recent to-do that irritates me), the core answer here is very similar. The immortals I write about do tend to be trauma survivors. It’s not always sexual trauma, but the broader umbrella trauma is around a lack of bodily autonomy and a lack of free will. I just don’t feel the need to put constraints or pressure on them. If they have forever, phases of experimentation will probably come and go if they get to a point of feeling like they want to try something different. I’m only looking at one limited window of time in my writing. In the case of Daniel and Armand, there’s an earlier window in which they had a different intimate dynamic already that I’m showing flashes of now and then. I did the same thing when I wrote my long haul with Aziraphale and Crowley. When characters have extensive history and fraught pasts where they’ve hurt each other, where maybe some of their early experimentation and power dynamics didn’t go well, where maybe one partner didn’t tell the other the full extent of their issues on purpose just so they’d be accepted, I tend to really, really say all cards go on the table in the present and the past shit that wasn’t working gets tossed out the window. They’re happy to have each other back above all else.
(There’s also the point that many of the immortals I work with are neurodivergent in some way, or are readable as such, and they don’t have typical, polished notions of romance and intimacy at all. It’s hopelessly charming and relatable to my Autistic ass. No way do I think hundreds or even thousands of years are going to make them too much better at this than most humans, so sue me.)
#devil’s minion#iwtv#good omens#aziraphale x crowley#ineffable husbands#interview with the vampire#armand x daniel#it’s so fascinating to me that i’ve gotten this about a decade apart on my significant immortal pairings#i wasn’t thinking about this link but now that i look at the way i write crowley and the way i write armand the parallels are obvious

Hi!! I binge-read some of your byler analysis, along with other users', and I can't help but STILL feel on the fence about hoping for byler endgame. I guess I just don't want to get my hopes super high only for them to be crushed by whatever CGI fest the düff3rs got in store to "go out with a bang" (while, obvs, sticking to the status quo and what they think the GA wants to see). I've seen so many intelligent people write media criticism pieces and analysis in support of the ship, but I still dread that the writers cry plausible deniability on all the clues they DID lay, that the people behind the N*f1ix social media accs confess that they've willingly posted queerbait to boost their engagement and thus get a bigger paycheck (I wouldn't blame them if they did, obvs; besides, it still means that some higher-up approved those misleading posts) and, worst of all, that this whole thing may end up blowing up negatively like the JohnLock conspiracy or the Voltron shenanigans or, y'know, the Supernatural fandom after Castiel's introduction and up until that lame ass final season. In your opinion, what makes byler different? Is there real hope for a satisfying mlm relationship from a show made by het men that capitalizes on 80s nerd culture nostalgia?
Sorry for coming off so jaded: I do wish for a byler ending, but it's been hard to keep my hopes aflame against these worries :c
i think everyone has some amount of doubt, which is totally understandable.
lgbt representation has come a long way, but a lot of us fans who are a bit older grew up consuming media that either had no representation or shitty representation. we sought ourselves in the media we loved and never found it, and corporations exploited that. nowadays there's way more representation that isn't left up to interpretation or censored, but a lot of the time that's in shows that are about romance and drama, high school a lot of the time. which is great, but stranger things is a sci fi show with romantic sub plots. it's easy for queer characters to end up being left out of a show like ST, but they haven't been at all.
one of the big messages of ST is embracing weirdness and being different. loving whatever it is you love, unashamed. when a character strays from being their true self or pushes away the things they love, there are consequences for the character. they become less likable to the audience. the entire theme of s4 is living in the truth, not hiding things, embracing love, being misunderstood simply because you're different. all of that is very queer coded. and it happens to be the season where will's love for mike fully comes into light.
there has been so much thought put into stranger things. the duffers have said there are no coincidences. they put thought into everything, thats why it takes so long to make a season, because they care so much. there are endless details i could point out not related to romance. they've also said they've been set on the ending for a while and will not be changing it to please people. i believe they said some people might not like the ending, but they don't care because they're making the story THEY want. which so far has uplifted queer people and promoted being different. so some antis may call be stupid for trusting them, but im choosing to. i believe they'll do these characters justice.
and my favorite quote from them is "The best plot twists don't make the audience say "wow I never saw that coming!", it makes you say "I should have seen that coming."
as a writer and a creative writing major, i definitely look up to the writers of ST. they are all incredibly talented and i hope one day i can put this much thought and love into a project. and, as a writer, i cannot see them throwing mike and will's relationship down the drain.
so, what makes byler different? there's very few shows where this much thought is put into everything. its not debatable that they do that, they've said it and its evident if you watch the show. so i refuse to believe all of these things between mike and will are just coincidences or accidents. there's just no possible way. i definitely had a klance phase and i can confidently say voltron writing is nowhere near the level of ST, and neither is supernatural. supernatural is one of those shows that has a lot of seasons and has gone all over the place in terms of writing and plot. the duffers have known the ending to this story since season 1. and unlike those shows with lots of seasons, ST only has 5. it won't be dragged on and beaten like a dead horse like some shows.
you don't have to completely eliminate your doubt. even i have doubt even after all i've said and posted. there is simply no way to confirm what'll happen before s5 releases, and they want it that way. just hold on until s5 friend

Hi!!! I come bearing big bang asks!
Favorite character/subject/object that was tough to draw?
Favorite and least favorite Royai tropes?
I can’t wait to see your full pieces!!!
HIII getting a bit late to these but hopefully is alright SDFGHJ
Favorite character/subject/object that was tough to draw?
OUGH HONESTLY?? Roy 😭 Idunno why, is just hard for me to make him look good? Or make him look in a way *I* perceive as good?? Other people tell me they like my Roy so idunno LOL
Ngl something that working for the Big Bang (doing 6 consecutive drawings of people) made me realize I am huh. Not very comfortable? Happy? with how I am drawing people and I been practicing in my own time with my OCs trying to see if I can get comfortable again/develop into an style that works
Is also so silly because bodies?? Hands?? those are perfect by me, is the heads and faces that I struggle A Lot to make them look good LOL I think this is the consequences of being a furry artist... 😔
Favorite and least favorite Royai tropes?
Answered some here and here ! I generally have a lot of opinions until someone asks me then I forget everything I have ever liked LOL huuuh I'm going to start with the dislike and then go to the like because they are related DFGH
I am going to be honest. I don't like how much this fandom puts an emphasis in the idea of marriage (Saying their relationship is not fulfilling until they are married or that is less because they have to keep it hidden) or even that they cannot date because of the anti-frat laws.......... LIKE I don't want to be that guy but. This is the queer trans man in me talking. I'm sorry they aren't oppressed LOL
Again is something that really bothers me over like... Idunno, all through history, even straight couples, had situations where they couldn't marry and had to keep relationships lowkey through their entire lives and were happy. It feels weird to me how many fanfics put "Royai is able to get married" as the ultimate goal in life when is like... idunno pal, you CAN be happy just like this......... WHICH LEADS ME TO. THING I LIKE. Man secret relationships are so fun SDFGH IN GENERAL but Royai with all the context going around is just so much fun. Having to sneak around, planning to have moments but also those that surge occasionally.... ough enrichment to my enclosure!! I looove office romances because it involves this and also having to create a separation between the relationship at work and the relationship under the covers
OUGH AND EXPLORING POWER DYNAMICS IS FUN!! I find Royai specially fun because the way it works is interesting. Yea they know each other since childhood so is not as straight forward, but there IS a power dynamic. Roy can try and push Riza around with his orders, Riza can get extremely angry at Roy because work has been going badly. Ough trying to have that difference, trying to act responsibly with each other but feelings are all around. I am eating my chair.
AND LIKE I SAID BEFORE!! this doesn't have to get in the way of them being happy or having a fulfilling relationship. They can't go and dance in public? then they dance together at their apartment. idunno there is something just. Charming, about everyday relationships that I think Royai can capture very well while also deals with two people in a very harsh moral situation....
#Ngl this whole rant is fun because is part of thinking about this what made me decide to work on Street Cats#again. Power dynamics office relationships in a work that leads to morally questionable situations fun#I am a man of my taste you can easily draw a line over most things I like and how I influence everything I do from something else I enjoy#anyways#royai big bang 2024#ask game!

https://www.tumblr.com/olderthannetfic/732112938662494209/its-always-been-kind-of-weird-to-me-that-incest
100% agree. I think the appeal of incest as a taboo in fiction is pretty obvious: people are attracted to the boundary-pushing, taboo nature of it, but they don't ACTUALLY want to fuck their relatives, they're still grossed out by that. but it's fun to watch someone else, someone fictional who is not their relative, transgress that particular taboo with someone else who is also not the reader's/viewer's relative (but is the character's relative). and by definition, there is an existing and likely complicated relationship between these characters that they can build on to create an interesting sexual/romantic relationship. the family relationship means the other person often knows and understands them intimately. there's often some degree of power imbalance. it just trips a lot of wires of things that people find exciting in romantic and smutty fiction.
it's also a particularly ridiculous thing to fixate on in terms of the supposed "real world" effects of reading idealized fiction about it. like, let's put aside the fact that we all know here that antis are wrong about what you get off to in fiction being what you're into irl, and the way they distort "representation matters" to mean that fiction always has a perfect 1:1 effect on how it influences people who consume it. for starters, incest is literally not something that an unrelated stranger can "groom you into," lol. because if they're not related to you it's not incest. and if they don't know anyone in your irl family... how would they be able to groom you that way? second, even if there were some potential that reading that would make you more interested in incestuous relationships more generally, that's only going to be a danger if there's someone else in your family who is already interested in and looking for opportunities to abuse that way.
(which, as a previous ask pointed out, is the only real "danger" of problematic fiction. yes, an abusive adult who wants to convince a teen that it's totally normal for them to have sex with that teen can probably use some fictional adult/teen romance they both like to make that seem more okay, but if they didn't have that they'd use something else. if they didn't have an adult/teen relationship, they'd use an age gap between adults - i've seen people use "well my parents were 10 years apart when they got married [as adults]" to excuse those kinds of relationships between adults and teenagers even though they're obviously different - and if they didn't have that, they'd find some other relationship that involved the characters having something in common with them. "age-gap relationships" are not inherently dangerous. abusers are dangerous, and abusers are opportunistic. shipping a certain dynamic does not make you an abuser. and honestly, probably the best people to put a stop to that are other people in that shipping community who can explain why enjoying this dynamic in fiction doesn't make it ok irl and how their feelings about the fictional vs. irl versions differ. but i digress)
honestly, i suspect that a lot of antis don't really understand what is the real "problem" with incest. they get overly fixated on blood quantum stuff, act like it's purely about the potential for birth defects and then project that same stuff on to couples where that isn't an issue (like same-sex couples, or distant cousins where the potential is significantly reduced). but the real issue is the potential for abuse. and most fictional incest either is an idealized version where that potential for abuse is not there OR if it's fucked-up, that is the POINT. no one was into shipping cersei/jaime in game of thrones because they were under the impression that the twins were NOT dangerously codependent. that was the appeal! it's the taboo of it all! it's that sometimes it's fun to watch people do things that they know are bad for them! it scratches the itch that makes you want to make bad choices yourself!

Sorry this is long. I'm working through the thought as I write this.
There's a post with kinda a lot of notes going around that idk how jokey it is and it's like here's what you need to have read/seen before watching IWTV so you understand the abusive patriach.
And well, I feel like it's part of the pattern of ppl pushing the show's critique of the abuse family structures enable in a way where they won't have to talk about race. How does Revolutionary Girl Utena relate to IWTV? How does Succession? I've never seen Succession, but their cast is almost completely white, which is racial commentary all its own... In Utena neither race nor colorism ever figures into the narrative iirc. I haven't read the Cairo trilogy since uni but I don't remember race factoring into it either??
Like Lestat was the abusive patriach of their family bcuz he's white! His power is gendered bcuz race is gendered (becuz power is gendered and so on). I think the show is in greater dialogue with James Baldwin and bell hooks than Yoji Enokido and Jesse Armstrong! Baldwin outright, didn't Rolin Jones say in an interview once that Giovanni's Room was a direct inspiration?
It just bothers me. The omission of art by Black creators was so striking I felt like someone slapped me. And maybe if then the tone wasn't so condescending and the idea that you have to have read The Oresteia to understand patriarchal violence so classist, maybe I could shrug it off. But you couple both and I'm like damn we squeezed the Greek and the Japanese in but don't mention even one Black person. I'm not saying the OP did it on purpose cuz I don't know the OP, but it felt so so glaring to me the times I've seen the post. Especially ppl sharing it going yeah exactly!! 😐
Lestat As Patriach to me is just more about white supremacy than the cisheteropatriarchy, and how despite Lestat's promises to Louis (be all the beautiful things you are etc) vampirism could not and does not free Louis (+ Claudia) from anti-Blackness. Altho patriarchy and white supremacy are closely related and both relevant to the show, obvs, it just rubs me wrong when one is ignored in favour of the other. And of course it's always the critique of whiteness that ends up ignored 🤔
Why is everyone so scared of mentioning that Louis is Black? Ugh. Sorry. I'd like your thoughts this fandom makes me feel like I'm off my meds. - 🦁

sry it took me a min to get to this, I wanted to track down the post itself for context. I can't find OP's username now but I remember seeing it before and it not being familiar. so idk otherwise what they've said about this post for the tone and intention.
I can say tho that utena and succession have made rounds here in comparison to iwtv from black fans sometimes. but I've also seen this post otherwise criticized before this ask for not having any black references on it. I tried to find that rolin quote about giovanni's room too, cuz I remember it, but idk where it is or what the whole context was anymore.
from being around the tumblr fandom, what I can say about this kind of stuff is that....from the book ppl to show fandom, both sides usually want to "prove" they're rly smart? it's for diff reasons but sometimes the same references. fandom in general keeps moving towards if u can make ur argument about whatever thing sound deep then that means it is and more ppl will support it. there's a lot of constant misuse of social justice and psychological terms as well as connections to art and literature. look how often ppl never talk about anything critically bcuz "it's gothic romance, sweetie" or "stop looking for morality in stories about vampires" (that was anne rice's whole point tho?? but ok lol). it's a lot of words to say nothing.
ppl will basically always jump thru more hoops than is necessary to look smart in ways that ppl have a broad connection to. a lot of black creators aren't well known to ppl in the first place and mostly only prbly by black ppl too, so referencing anything doesn't get u the points that greek "classics" or pop references get. it also depends on the age range of where anything is posted. this fandom tends to be 20s to 40s but with more emphasis on 20s now, prbly, so lots of focus on proving ur worth and intelligence in the world. this post feeds that type of thing. it's kind of a pat on the head that ur engaging with "smart" stuff.
idk if the post *was* meant as a joke or not bcuz this is the kind of stuff the fandom *will* weaponize in defense of white fandom shit in rly racist ways, so. like u said, it's always kind of about all these other things except the most obvious.....which doesn't take much book smarts to see, u just look at the world around u on any given day. but I've noticed ppl tend to avoid topics that hit too close to home, so this is a way to give distance to things too, I think. If it's all fictional then it can't hurt u fr and also u don't have to care about being vocal about anything or doing any work otherwise.

130 Reasons Why I'm Fairy Trash
💜 Lavender Train Arc
(July 2016 - Ongoing)
"Cripes, it's been years. Centuries? I dunno; I've been high for most of it... But it's easy. When I'm on peppermint, I can forget about what's bothering me. S-see, the thing is, I just can't stop thinking about Foop and Anti-Goldie... "I don't wanna make them do anything they don't want to. That's not fair to them. I wouldn't want Foop to do anything like that to my life if I had to be the one to copy him, so why should I be controlling his life like this? It should be his choice, you know? He sh-shouldn't have to be forced if he doesn't want to..."
- Drama, Romance, Angst, & Fluff
- Prompts related to the celebrity kids and friends: Poof, Foop, Goldie, Anti-Marigold, Sammy, Finley, Hiccup (Foop's alt personality), and Cavatina (Sanderson's son)
Summary
Spellementary School. Alberich Middle. Carl Poofypants High. Welcome to the best years of the rest of your life. Poof is no stranger to being strong or popular, but discovering he's a gyne - a "queen bee" among fairies - comes with its own challenges. That whole "fighting for dominance" and "driven to kill each other" thing certainly add stress that'll never go away... even if he wasn't incredibly anxious about his on-and-off poly girlfriend (Goldie) or H.P.'s eternal push to hire him at Pixies Inc. Foop's spent his life fighting for every scrap of respect his Fairy classmates see fit to give him. Exhausted by the complex dance of supporting his mother through a war, juggling his mistress with his actual betrothed, and struggling to restrain an alternate personality growing ever more protective and bitter, you have to wonder... is chasing universal domination even worth it anymore?

## A Deeper Look: The Anti-Starboy Movement in Disney's Wish
The revelation of concept art featuring Starboy, a scrapped character from Disney's Wish, ignited an unexpected phenomenon: a wave of anti-Starboy sentiment among fans. This analysis delves into the motivations behind this movement and its broader implications for Disney's storytelling strategies, focusing on why Starboy's inclusion might not have resonated well with the audience.
**Why Starboy Wouldn't Have Worked:**
* **Narrative Dilution:** Introducing Starboy as a potential love interest for Asha could have easily overshadowed the core narrative of the film. A complex character like Starboy, with his shapeshifting abilities and likely backstory, would have demanded significant screen time to be developed effectively. This could have diverted focus from Asha's individual journey and the central themes of the film, such as the power of wishes and self-belief.
* **Character Arc Complexity:** A romantic subplot involving Starboy could have simplified Asha's character arc. Her growth and development might have become intertwined with the relationship, making her achievements feel dependent on external validation. By focusing on Asha's solo quest, the film allows her to overcome challenges and experience personal growth on her own terms, creating a more empowering and relatable narrative.
* **Thematic Cohesiveness:** A fantastical love interest like Starboy could have introduced a layer of dissonance to the film's thematic core. Wish, as evidenced by the final product, seems to prioritize themes of self-exploration, personal empowerment, and the importance of genuine connections. Starboy, with his potentially fantastical origins and abilities, might have clashed with this focus on grounded, relatable themes, creating a sense of thematic confusion for the audience.
* **Genre Expectations:** Disney's "Wish" falls under the genre of fantasy adventure. While romance can certainly be a part of this genre, introducing a shapeshifting space creature as a love interest might have pushed the boundaries of what the audience expected from the film. Fans, perhaps, were looking for a more traditional adventure story focused on Asha's personal growth and the fantastical elements directly related to the wishing magic.
* **Character Redundancy:** The concept art for Starboy depicts a young, androgynous figure. Disney already has a rich history of fantastical creatures serving as companions or guides in their animated films. Introducing Starboy might have felt repetitive, lacking the unique qualities needed to stand out from past characters and truly complement Asha's narrative.
**Conclusion:**
The anti-Starboy movement highlights the audience's desire for stories that prioritize strong individual narratives and avoid predictable tropes. While Starboy might have offered a fantastical element, his inclusion could have diluted the film's core themes and overshadowed Asha's journey. By removing him, the film maintains focus on its central message, allowing for a more cohesive and impactful story that resonates with modern audiences seeking empowering narratives.

That previous anon post was about gwen was spot on and it has me thinking things
I really hate how people think Miles and Gwen have to get together in btsv. Like they just need to be together romantically, like that's the only satisfying way to tie the story together and its not. Like yeah we know they'll reconcile and everything but even then, I feel like them rebuilding their friendship just being friends and working towards building trust would be more powerful and realistic, maybe that's the aromantic (and anti this ship lol) in me talking but it's not necessary to just throw them together cause they're the main boy main girl, or "the build up" (which wasnt that much I feel?) or like Miles is some prize for Gwen to win after she 'saves him and makes it up somehow. Plus, Miles doesn't need to be so dependent/obsessive on her because he has new spider friends! Hobie Margo Pavitr who are spider people his age and who he can bond with as well! It doesn't have to just be about Gwen anymore (I'm seriously begging the writers to build his relationships with the other spiderteens and give focus to them and not just center Gwen, because centering and pushing the white girl over the black/poc characters will always rub me wrong)
Sorry for dumping this on you, I just had some thoughts xD
Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
For one, I also think that it's kinda odd how many people feel that romance would be the only satisfying way to end their arc. Friendships being explored in a story have always held more weight to me than romance, especially if the romance in question feels unearned or contrived (which, let's be real, is the case for most het canon ships 🥴)
I think spiderverse is going to have to deal with the fact that Gwen is no longer the only person that Miles can possibly relate to or form bonds with. I would have an extremely difficult time believing that Miles' crush on her would be more valuable at this point in the story than his relationship with the characters who were actually there for him when it mattered. Them suddenly jumping back into a romance would feel odd.
It's no hate to Gwiles shippers though (at least the ones that are normal about it). I just don't feel inclined to be emotionally invested in their romantic potential 😭 I think rebuilding their friendship would be a much more realistic goal to work towards story-wise bc spiderverse already has so much going on

ɢᴇᴛ ᴛᴏ ᴋɴᴏᴡ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴜɴ
ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘɪᴄᴋ ᴜᴘ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴜʀʀᴇɴᴛ ᴍᴜꜱᴇ(ꜱ) ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ?
Some of them it's hard to really pinpoint an exact reason why I pick up some muses, mainly I just get an itch to write a specific archetype or character, but usually it's because something about that character resonated with me! An example being that I really relate to Noriaki Kakyoin or with Alastor/Alucard, I just really wanted to write a sort of villain or character with some fucked up morals. It's fun and it challenges my writing a lot! I guess mainly, I like characters I feel I understand well or characters that push me out of my comfort zone.
ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ?
Anything to do with SA, it's an absolute NO from me but I would think that's obvious that writing SA is kinda gross for roleplay? There's other stuff too, I really don't like ABO AU's, I just think the whole "alpha" and "beta" thing is just really weird and not my thing. Finally is just weird fetished, man. I'm not gonna RP a character getting blown up like a balloon or anything like that, no offence but it makes me EXTREMELY uncomfortable.
ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ?
I love writing angst, romance, fluff, slice of life or even action!!! Those are all really fun genres to RP for me, especially angst because I'm a sadistic son of a bitch, so I get super hyped to RP messing with my muses!
ʜᴏᴡ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴꜱ?
I'm usually inspired by music or fan art. Sometimes it's just me making a general observation and running with it or basing a headcanon off of life experiences!
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ɪɴ ꜱɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴏʀ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀʏ ᴍᴜꜱɪᴄ?
Music, absolutely. When I'm having trouble writing a muse, I listen to a song from a private muse playlist I made on Spotify that I associate with that muse and it REALLY helps me get more into character.
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʀᴇᴘʟɪᴇꜱ ᴏʀ ᴡɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ?
Heavily depends on the RP! If it's a plotted RP, I do plan my replies for the most part but if it's one where I don't 100% know where it's going, I just wing it and hope for the best lol
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ꜱʜɪᴘᴘɪɴɢ?

Dune 2. I got roped into seeing it and I didn't see the first one. It's good, I mean the costuming and design is incredible, but eehhhh I'm not a huge sci-fi person. I do like the anti-chosen one message though!
ʟᴀꜱᴛ ꜱʜᴏᴡ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀᴛᴄʜᴇᴅ?

Absolutely! @solartomes and @solacanis are some of my best friends on this site! I adore the both of them with my whole heart and they've been there for me through some pretty rough times in my life. My other best friends don't RP on Tumblr anymore, but we've all been one big group that I love to death!
