Gobbled up the Dandadan anime and manga recently and absolutely adored it all. Not only does it feature the most likable and strongly written female characters I’ve ever seen in a shonen, it discusses extremely pertinent themes about consent and bodily autonomy from a lens of female solidarity while also elevating healthy relationships with kind communicative male characters who respect boundaries. It’s wacky, fun, gorgeous, and super refreshing.

Introducing! ELESA, the new kid on the block! She's a tiny bedraggled child from Sinnoh and not all that familiar with Galarian, the spoken language in Unova. (One day she'll be amazing. Right now though, she just wants to go play in the mud. And maybe get a better set of hearing aids.)

When not bitterly lonely, she’s scheming to run back to her old home. Or chasing the local patrat. Or watching nervously from the sidelines as other children play on the swings. Oh elesa. (loosely inspired by @/noxstrages' incredible comics about elesa's origins! Ty for the food.)

god i love tos as much as the next guy but there are episodes that are so hard to watch cause of the misogyny and crazy cultural appropriation. and you can use "oh it was the 60s" as an excuse for only so long

I’ve been thinking about The Promise again, and it’s really interesting to me how the narrative tries to frame Zuko as the “dark” character once again, despite the fact that Aang was the one considering banning interracial relationships and supporting the Earth Kingdom in invading Yu Dao (which most of the people living there did not want).

In canon, Aang only changed his stance on interracial relationships after realizing it would affect him personally. But consider this—what if Katara wasn’t interested in Aang at that point. What if she was with someone else?

It would be interesting to explore how that would change the plot.

Just adding some Gale appreciation.

He really is a joy to meet and talk to. I love hearing his perspective on magic and the ways he understands it more intimately than most. He has an incredibly sweet romance that took me by surprise. It was very easy to like him, awkward man posing as an accomplished intellectual... all the while hiding a literal bomb of magic in his chest, compliments of his hubris with a goddess.

His character is tied so well into his arc, and it was so cute with moments of potential shipteasing with him. Absolutely adorable man.

I want to also appreciate his friendship route for a moment as someone who also feels despair, and who ponders death to a probably distressing degree. I love both the romance and the friendship route and would absolutely romance him again, but that night in Act 2 is so special to my heart as someone who has stayed up with friends and they did the same for me when things were too hard.

Gale Dekarios reminds me that there is still beauty in the world, and that platonic love exists, and it feels peaceful for a little while again.
