one thing that i don’t understand is why, all of a sudden, everybody believes solas and, to a degree, acts like they always believed him and it would be crazy to think otherwise. solas tells you in inquisition that he attempted, over centuries, to tell people what he knows about the Evanuris and was widely met with scorn, which is why the inquisitor believing and showing curiosity is such a big deal to him.
#greg texts#datv critical#especially morrigan!#like girl don’t even pretend. i remember what you were like at the elven ruins in inquisition.#it feels like many decisions in this game were made with the effects on the audience in mind as opposed to internal narrative consistency#in this game they want everybody to be on the same page with solas having had his reasons behind his actions#and so they just change the sentiments of the characters around you to basically tell you how to interpret things

okay now that i'm more awake, i think this comes from a grievous misunderstanding of what role religion serves in a religious society. the writers are viewing religion with the same lens that someone living in modern day north america would view religion, as this very individual thing with belief that varies from person to person and that's why so many characters are able to just drop religion so quickly, because the only thing they've really had to wrestle with about it is their own feelings.
but in a religious society, this system of belief underlies literally everything. it's seen as common sense and unchallengable, as the most basic thing that a person can know about the world. core services like medical care, education, and government are all offered through the church. not believing would lead to immediate and profound alienation by your entire society. there should be an undercurrent of immense fear, that the very foundation of one's concept of the world has been shaken and yet, you can't not believe.
but yeah, an aspect of the veilguard that really alienates me is how pragmatic the characters are being in the face of these recently mythological concepts manifesting physically in their world. especially given the significant role of faith, doctrine, and religion within the very foundation of their societies and worldviews. all three prior games have perfectly set up this confrontation with the idea that the objects of one's worship are tangible individuals often elevated to godhood as stories about them warp and change over the years, a compelling addition to the long running theme of religion's effects on society and people within the series. and the most it can muster is characters standing around, talking about gods made flesh with the same level of urgency that we talked about corypheus ten years ago.
#greg texts#datv critical#the previous games understood this but there have been drastic changes to the writers room since then#it's honestly such a weird vibe. i was really expecting the veil jumpers to be a lot more religious than they were.

#greg texts#datv critical#sorry for my sleep deprived ramble but when my sister asked how the game was#i said that it feels oddly sci-fi for a dragon age game#but i think the word i was looking for was secular. it feels very secular for a dragon age game.

To say something wholly negative, the way that DATV considers faith and being raised in a culture of faith is absolutely piss.
You can care about that less as a player (though I would say what did you engage with as a core theme of the franchise if you do) and I accept that. But the game has completely removed any complex thought around the concept of belief in any ideal past the self.
Anything that is religious or spiritual is proven or explained. We’ve completely stepped away from the conversations around the Qun, or the chantry. It makes sense for these discussions to be different, as we are in countries that are more concerned with status, money, and a proto-science, but the reality is cultural conversation around this stuff would still be rife. All of the cults should have only been able to flourish because there were people ripe for exploitation.
#dragon age veilguard#datv spoilers#datv critical#i’m not very far in the game yet like i just finished the questline where you first meet bellara#but already i get the sense that this game is not having the underlying discussion about religion#that was present in all prior games#this far in and i’m deeply missing how ubiquitous religion and faith was in everybody’s day to day lives#and belief

sorry, i do think it’s a little silly that the opening scene of the game is solas fen’harel having his plan foiled by an osha violation
#greg texts#dragon age veilguard#i get it! i get it! i too would find it really difficult to come up with a way#for a level 1 player character to meaningfully hinder a character who so happens to be god#they were working within some serious constraints there

it's interesting that his citadel was called the Lighthouse, a structure that can serve as either a beacon or a warning.
#greg texts#dragon age veilguard#if i was going to get nitpicky i could also say that#him choosing to call it the Lighthouse implies the presence of a maritime culture among the ancient elves#which i don't think is the case but is interesting to consider#datv spoilers

sometimes i wonder if i should just get a master's but i also know that's the devil talking
#greg texts#like i don't care about getting a masters#it would literally just be because there's a couple programs at decent universities that would let me get it in a year#and the requirements are infinitely easier than tech school#like i could drop my hours down to 40 a week and do it part time

because ranaste primarily exists in the narrative as this idealized figment of maze's memory, i keep needing to remind myself of the sort of person he really was and especially the fact that he was mopey and explosive and a little off-putting to everybody who wasn't a lonely teenage boy who'd never experienced familial love before. and if i don't, i find myself rapidly falling for maze's recollection of him as this tragic knight in shining armour.
#greg texts#oops i keep almost falling for the facade of my own making#i think a part of it is that maze's recollection isn't *wrong* necessarily#it's just extremely biased#maze would never admit that in many cases ranaste was a very hard person to be around
