don't have the time + brainpower + inclination to really elaborate on this atm, but i think part of why the increasingly hard sci-fi slant of the steel wool era grates against people familiar with the older games' L O R E so much is in part because it's taking the original twist of fnaf and... untwisting it. like, the entirety of the original trilogy (which was, we must remember, intended to end with those entries) is on the surface about malfunctioning killer animatronics -- only for the audience to gradually realise that all the talk of glitches and hardware malfunctions is, well, a lie designed to cover the more supernatural truth. there is a reason some of the most popular fnaf posts that've broken containment are ones of people finding out that this is a series about murdered children -- because although it might not feel that way to a fan familiar with the franchise, that is the twist. like the killer animatronics themselves, fnaf is a sci-fi shell housing something far more spiritual beneath.
by untwisting that twist, you don't create a new twist -- you just put everything back where it started. and that's deeply dissatisfying! because not only is it a kick in the teeth to people who expected different, it's a twist that fundamentally does not work for new audiences -- because they don't know the original twist. to them it is a story played straight, and when your franchise is already kinda bare of much else... well, what's left but a by-the-numbers story that others have already done better?
