Bref. Autre monde.

Thomas Adamson, Sylvie Corbet, and Elaine Ganley at AP, via HuffPost:
PARIS (AP) — Jean-Marie Le Pen, the founder of France’s far-right National Front who was known for fiery rhetoric against immigration and multiculturalism that earned him both staunch supporters and widespread condemnation, has died. He was 96. A polarizing figure in French politics, Le Pen’s controversial statements, including Holocaust denial, led to multiple convictions and strained his political alliances . Le Pen, who once reached the second round of the 2002 presidential election, was eventually estranged from his daughter, Marine Le Pen, who renamed his National Front party, kicked him out and transformed it into one of France’s most powerful political forces while distancing herself from her father’s extremist image. Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally as the party is now known, confirmed Le Pen’s death in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday. Bardella’s unusually warm tribute highlighted Le Pen’s polemical past, including his ties to the Algerian war, describing him as a “tribune of the people” who “always served France” and expressing condolences to his family, including Marine.
The post appeared to blur the distance the rebranded party had sought to establish between its firebrand founder and its more polished, modern direction under Marine Le Pen. Marine Le Pen, thousands of kilometers (miles) away in the French territory of Mayotte, was inspecting the aftermath of destructive Cyclone Chido at the time of her father’s death. Despite his exclusion from the party in 2015, Le Pen’s divisive legacy endures, marking decades of French political history and shaping the trajectory of the far right.
French far-right antisemite Jean-Marie Le Pen died at 96. Le Pen founded the right-wing populist/far-right National Front (Front national), in which his daughter Marine succeeded him in leading the party and made the party more palatable to center-right folk.

please vote on july 7th it’s very important. Don’t let the fascist win i’m begging you
our country has to remain free for all, they’re just manipulating you but the RN is just fucking dumb and composed of fucking assholes it’s not because « hihi Bardella x Attal they’re so funny » that they are fun, you’re just giving them a better image just like they WANT. THE RN IS STILL THE SAME AS WHEN IT WAS CREATED AND IT WILL NEVER CHANGE
VOTE FOR BETTER THINGS, NOT TO GO BACK IN TIME

Ashifa Kassam at The Guardian:
Voter turnout across France has surged to a near four-decade high as voters cast their ballots in the first round of high stakes, snap parliamentary elections that could lead to the far-right party of Marine Le Pen forming a government in a historic first. While polls suggest support for Le Pen’s far-right, anti-immigrant National Rally (RN) has strengthened in recent days, the outcome of the two-round election, called three weeks ago by the president, Emmanuel Macron, following the crushing defeat of his allies in the European parliamentary elections, remains highly uncertain. With three hours remaining until polls closed on Sunday, voter turnout had reached 59.39% – an increase of nearly 20 points compared with the 2022 elections, according to the interior ministry. Turnout is estimated to be the highest since the 1986 legislative vote, the research director for Ipsos France, Mathieu Gallard, told Reuters. The high turnout is likely to mean that many more third-place candidates will make it to the second round of the election, Mujtaba Rahman, Eurasia Group’s managing director for Europe, said on social media. “Why does that matter? It allows Left and the Macron centre to make deals to withdraw (the) worst-placed candidates and allow the others a free run against the Far Right candidate in Round 2,” he wrote. The outcome of these tactical alliances could decide whether the RN “approaches” a majority in the second round, he added.
The first round of the French Parliamentary elections are today, and the far-right Rassemblement National (National Rally) are projected to be the lead party.
