Hi! I'm writing a fanfic and one of the main characters is trans, and I'm wondering if it's okay if I write his coming out scene as a sort of "from now on call me <insert name>". And also another thing: the character's pov I'm writing from is sort of set in the future, as in the whole fanfic is just a bunch of memories he remembers, and his friend came out to him a couple years after they met, so he knows his dead name. How should I write those memories before he came out? I don't want to use his birth name and I think it would be confusing if I'd say, for example, "that was the day Matthew told us to call him Matthew from now on". Also, any other tips for writing a trans character would be incredible.
Hope you're having a great day <3
Hey there!
I think having your trans character ask other characters to use his new name is a pretty smooth and efficient way to have him come out.
Here are some other tips for writing trans characters:
Tackling the elephant in the room: deadnames
Writing transmasc nonbinary characters vs. binary trans male characters
Writing transfem characters (pt. 1)
Writing transfem characters (pt. 2)
Writing nonbinary characters - navigating more "obscure" labels (ex. galactian system)
Writing characters with alternating/multiple sets of pronouns
Navigating your trans character's past
Accurately portraying gender dysphoria + trans self-discovery as a cis writer (pt. 1)
Accurately portraying gender dysphoria + trans self-discovery as a cis writer (pt. 2)
Coming out: keeping it casual
Writing queer identities that you don't share with your characters (as a queer person)
Accidental cissexism and unintentional misgendering from well-intentioned characters
How to seamlessly incorporate trans people and nonbinary genders into your sci-fi/fantasy setting (without stealing ideas from nonwhite cultures looking at you eon: the last dragoneye)
The barebones basics of writing genderfluid characters

"Do you have to make being queer your whole personality?"
Yes. It angers you. It causes you discomfort... it's payback for the discomfort you've caused me. Its reversing my trauma into my queerness and superblasting it into you just because it pisses you off!

So today is the last Audio Drama Sunday before we reach our crowdfunding goal for Holmwood. What can I say? It's been a massive rollercoaster of a journey. We will have to see what happens on Thursday, but as we have a chance today, I wanted to thank everyone who has backed the project, supported us in any way, and enthused about Holmwood online on our various social media platforms over the last few months.
Georgia and I are known as writers really only in the niche world of Doctor Who IP, so we knew it was a massive risk to jump from Big Finish's safety net into the podcast community. Needless to say, everyone has been brilliant, and so so welcoming. We're so touched and honoured to have been supported and cheered on by all of you.
We're new to producing, casting and marketing, but we love the Dracula novel. We love creating spaces for queer and trans people in our writing. We love Holmwood. It is a massive part of who we are and why we came together as a couple. Jeremy and Maddie are so special to us, and seeing the love shared by everyone else puts us in awe regularly, especially the fan art and the memes.
Our crowdfund officially ends in three days. Three more days, and only £4899 left to raise.

Hey I wrote a book!
It's called
FURTHER PRINCIPLES: ON THE DYNAMICS OF INTERDIMENSIONAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Tumblr media
I'mma be real with you gang.
This one rules.
I'm really freaking proud.
This is the sequel to Principles of Non-Euclidean Romance, a science fiction romcom starring a transsexual lesbian Lovecraftian horror obsessed with the Vengaboys. It can be found on itch and Amazon.
Further Principles follows the continued adventures of the eldritch abomination Sammaël through time, space and a secret third thing in its attempts to connect to the ineffable human experience, this time through the power of friendship and awkward conversations with someone who literally doesn't have anyone else to turn to.
If you like fantasy, science fiction, and metanarrative stories with a hefty helping of linguistic jokes, inspired by Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, starring an eldritch abomination that just wants to be friends, you really should check it out.
You can purchase it on amazon here
To whet your appetite, I have provided you with some excerpts
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I would also like to offer:
It contains the best kiss I have ever written and, potentially, the best kiss in the multiverse.
So come on, give it a shot, and please share the post because lately my reach online has been lacking and selling these things is how I pay rent lol.

As you might expect from a couple of queer indie authors, Fell & I are going hard on the sales and promotions for Pride Month! I'll try to summarize as succinctly as possible, and remember that you can always click the links for a full synopsis ;)

✨ A short and sweet sapphic contemporary fantasy read? My novella Worm in a Jar is pay what you want on Gumroad all month, so you can download it free if you'd like!
✨ A not-romantic fantasy novel with queer trans protagonists, about a demon and a demon hunter who must team up to prevent an imprending wave of violence? Our upcoming collab, Hierarchy of the Unseen, comes out June 21! It's up for preorder now, and available as an ARC on Netgalley :)
✨ The above, and also deals and/or supporting queer trans authors? This month, we're running a special offer on Patreon: all new & current patrons starting at the $4 tier will receive a free paperback of HotU (in addition to the ebook downloads, early access to our work, behind-the-scenes exclusives, and more already offered to patrons)!

I haven't seen any poll blogs specifically for queer ships (canon or headcanon), so I thought I'd give it a try.
You don't have to know the characters/media to ship/not ship them. Feel free to go by vibes.
You can submit ships here (asks are only for questions!) :
List of submitted and posted ships with poll data:
Rules:
- only queer ships (whatever queer means to you)
- you can submit both canon and headcanon ships (but if it is headcanon, please explain in your submission)
- you can submit crossover ships
- you can submit platonic ships (please indicate this in your submission!)
- you can submit poly ships
- ships with under 1000 votes can be submitted again
- if the ship is m/f and one or more people in the ship are trans, please indicate so in the form (as I will not include cis allo m/f ships)

"Don't shove it down our throats"
"Protect the kids, keep this away from them"
No. Stop.
We need to keep showing it
We need to let people that they are seen.
We need to show these kids. Kids. That they have someone.
Why?
Because queer youth are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than their peers
Because 45 percent or queer youth have considered suicide within the last year
Because a young queer person attempts suicide every 45 seconds
Because having just one supportive adult reduscing the risk of suicide in queer teens by 40 percent
If you want to protect the kids, save our fucking lives
Instead of saying to stop shoving it down your throats
Take the pills out of our throats
Take the noose off our necks
Take the blades and guns out of our hands
And let them out their hands there instead
So they can hold us and help us
And listen an let us know
Hey. I see you. I hear you. Your feelings are valid. And you are loved
If you care about the children then let us be seen and heard...
At this point I'm scared for my life... If I didn't have a support adult that had that sign on their door at school and wore that pin I would be dead
That sign. That pin. They don't hurt the straight cis kids. They don't cause harm. They don't get affected by them. But it saved my life...
So please. Stop saying stuff like that.
To other queer kids, please. Here me. You are loved. You will be accepted one day. My messages are open. You deserve to be alive. You're not broken. You're not a fuck up. You are a person just like me and all those other 8 billion on this planet. You are worth so much more than what theyve said. I love you so so so so so much. This world is better with you here. It's better with you and your personality because you're unique. We need people who are different. I love you. I'm here if you need anything at all. And I'm so proud of you...

Queer Disability in Horror
Tumblr media
[ID: A poster. Large white text in the centre reads "Queer Disability In Horror". In the upper left corner, smaller black text reads "Disability in Books". The background is a wood grain pattern, with the top and bottom of bordered by a row of book tops. In the upper right corner, the logo for the Disability Book Archive. In the lower left corner, the disability pride flag in the shape of a heart, and the rainbow pride flag, in the shape of smaller heart slightly layered on top. In the lower right corner, a stack of cartoonish books. /end]
Tumblr media
[ID: The same poster. The text and stack of books has been removed. The hearts and logo have shrunken in size. There are 5 book covers. From left to right, the covers are: "Camp Damascus" by Chuck Tingle, "Sorrowland" by Rivers Solomon, "Blackwater" by Jeannette Arroyo and Ren Graham, "Hell Followed With Us" by Andrew Joseph White, and "The Spirit Bares Its Teeth" by Andrew Joseph White. /end]
Tumblr media
[ID: The same poster. The book covers have been replaced. From left to right, the covers are: "It Looks Like Us" by Alison Ames, "Into the Drowning Deep" by Mira Grant, "Deathless Divide" by Justina Ireland, "We Shall Be Monsters" by Derek Newman-Stille, and "Highway Bodies" by Alison Evans. /end]
🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 [22 rainbow pride flag emojis]
A short list of 10 horror books featuring queer, disabled, and queer-disabled characters and themes!
Camp Damascus has been suggested on every single post I've made asking for queer-disabled horror recommendations, including the non-tumblr forums. To a lesser but equally persistent extent, so has Sorrowland and Into the Drowning Deep.
I've really tried to add different books to this list to make sure it wasn't the same as the one I put out for Halloween. The issue is that, I think maybe a grand total of three new horror or horror adjacent books have been added to the archive since then, so I was really strapped for recommendations. And I know it's shorter than the others, but I really appreciate everyone who has contributed a book to this list, or told me that I'd added the wrong one.
Hopefully next year I won't have to scrape the book forums to put another one together!
The books on this list are:
🏳️‍🌈"Camp Damascus"- Tingle, Chuck
🏳️‍🌈 "Sorrowland"- Solomon, Rivers
🏳️‍🌈 "Blackwater"- Arroyo, Jeannette. Graham, Ren.
🏳️‍🌈 "Hell Followed With Us"- White, Andrew Joseph
🏳️‍🌈 "The Spirit Bares Its Teeth"- Ames, Alison
🏳️‍🌈 "Into the Drowning Deep"- Grant, Mira
🏳️‍🌈 "Deathless Divide"- Ireland, Justina
🏳️‍🌈 "We Shall Be Monsters"- Newman-Stille, Derek
🏳️‍🌈 "Highway Bodies"- Evans, Alison
Some of the books on this list can be found on the Disability Book Archive. The rest will be added in the future.
Happy Pride Month!
