New Fanfic - Stars & Scars

So....i got sucked into the marauders fandom several months ago and now theres this haha. Go read the first chapter of Scars & Stars - a Jegulus story mainly but with wolfstar and Mary/Lily hehe.

Summary: Regulus Black is about to enter University and leave his old life behind him which is easier said than done. He thinks that going across the country is enough to forget all that happened but is met with the harsh reality that trauma never fully goes away and apparently the same is true with James Potter. A face he never expected to see again and tries to avoid but ultimately fails miserably. His fresh start just got a lot more complicated….

It gets really hard to be in this fandom sometimes. a lot of y'all are misogynistic, and I understand that's often not a conscious decision, but rather a result of social conditioning, and I understand that you can have your "preferences" or would rather seek out fics that you can relate to more, but god, it's so draining to be in such a male-focused fandom.

I do try my best to bring more attention to the girls, I reblog a lot of sapphic content, I read almost exclusively about wlw pairings, I kudos and comment, the fics I recommend to people are all focused on women. Basically, I show my support to creators of women-focused content, because it encourages them to continue creating such content.

I myself am a queer Indigenous girl, and, to put it bluntly, I'm sick of the lack of representation in a space that is supposed to be inclusive. Of course queer men should be represented, but when you prioritise representing them over queer women (especially including queer women of colour), you really should take a step back and look at what kind of message that sends.

Now, I would like to make it clear that I am not forcing anyone to write about content purely for the sake of representation. Fanfic writers write for free, and I am grateful for all the work they contribute to this fandom. If you do not think you can put in the enthusiasm needed to write a fanfiction about a certain pairing, then don't write one. A fic written not for your own joy will inevitably just read as forced representation.

That being said, however, I do think people should look deeper into why they don't want to read/write content about women. Unpacking internalised misogyny can be difficult, I get it. It's hard to admit you might have biases against a minority, especially when you think of yourself as a progressive person. I've been there, I had a bunch of ideas about how I should look, dress, act, etc. that were all really just ideas that were socially conditioned into me by a patriarchal society.

I doubt the people who this is targeted to will ever actually read this, let alone take what I've said to heart. Most people who will read this are probably the ones who do value the girls in the fandom (and not just say they do). But, regardless, I needed to get it off my chest.

I'm just gonna log off anywhere where I see fandom content for the next week, so if you want to talk to me I won't see your messages till then. I try to keep my surroundings positive, and when I feel such negativity I know it's time to take a break and focus on things that are good for my mental health.

This will probably be controversial, but I feel like it needs to be talked about. (Marauders fandom edition part 1?)

Before I say anything else, I want to preface this by saying that everyone can have their ideas and headcanons about characters, you do you. So what I think we need to talk about is things like this:

“Omg no, the Marauders are definetly all straight, wydm??” “In canon they’re all cishet, can we keep that?” “Why is every single character some form of gay?”

In canon, little is known about them, but that’s not my point. This fandom is made up by 90% queer people that are making representation for themselves in media, because in said media, most of the “representation” is just one stereotypical queer person so the production team can claim they’re not homophobic. So when you take representation made by queer people for queer people and start packing it back into the same cishet boxes in was in before, you’re taking something that wasn’t made for you, and altering it to fit in a way you like. This sub-fandom wasn’t made by queer people so that straight people could take it and rewire it to fit them. Some *specific* instances of this are asexual Evan Rosier, trans Regulus Black, pansexual James Potter, and aroace Peter Pettigrew. While I’m not sure if this was representation some in this fandom made for themselves or others, it’s still important. What I’m really trying to say (it’s 12:36 at night, please) is that this fandom wasn’t made for straight people.

Marlene McKinnon isn’t headcanoned to be a lesbian so a weird uncle named Fred could fetishize her, she’s headcanoned to be a lesbian so that a 14 year old girl could see a character like her and feel seen. Sirius Black is not headcanoned to be gay/bi so a lonely wine mom could sexualize him. He’s headcanoned to be gay/bi so that a teenaged boy doesn’t feel so weird anymore.

Again, it’s okay to headcanon whoever to want to be this that or the other, that’s not what I’m addressing. It’s making everyone the same carbon copies of straight, white, and cis.

Anyways Pandora and Barty would totally use it/its pronouns because they hate being referred to.

Pandora also takes testosterone off and on because it likes the effects (total June Henry variant if you know who that is).

Evan listens to obscure folk punk bands and drags Barty to the concerts.

Regulus Black knows obscure sexualites/gender identities from when he was a teen obsessively searching for a label that fit him (he eventually settled on being an aroace trans man).

Here comes something you guys are gonna hate to hear - James Potter is a drag king, and he is serious about this shit. He loves his makeup collection almost as much as he loves Reggie. Pandora custom makes his dresses and other outfits.

Marlene is a punk lesbian who uses a few sets of neopronouns. They takes Barty to all the shows she wants to go to, and makes Mary come to some of the less hardcore ones.

Mary uses an insane amount of neopronouns and is constantly experimenting with potions to get her presentation exactly how she wants it.

Lily is aromantic allosexual. She is kinda romance repulsed, actually. She can't stand romance books, seeing it on TV, etc. She couldn't even bring herself to watch Heartstopper with Mary, Marlene and Dorcas because of it. Her, James and Reggie are in a QPR.

Peter has a lot of complex, intersecting identities, often dresses femininely, has tried estrogen but didn't like the effects, and reads books about queerness frequently.

Just because you assosciate being in tune with yourself as being cringe doesn't mean everyone does. Your precious fictional characters can be queer, and want to know themselves, and express in a way that you don't think they should.

Here’s how I think the marauders + co would celebrate:

James: dresses up in his flag colors / rainbow / glitter and participates in the parade; walks around the festival then dances at bars the rest of the day (and kisses Reg… a lot)

Sirius: either rainbow head to toe or full drag / leather; struts the parade and spends the rest of the day party/bar hopping with James and Mary

Remus: begrudgingly wears muted tones of his flag colors; watches the parade and then goes to the pride festival for a little while before heading home to watch queer shows

Peter: wears his ace colors with pride + drapes a flag over his shoulders; watches the parade and then visits the festival, interacting with queer vendors and supporting queer businesses

Lily: space buns, glitter, rainbow tulle skirt and a paint-splattered tank top; carries a flag through the parade, then joins Remus at the festival & James at the bars

Mary: goes all out with her flag colors including bold makeup and custom shoes; walks in the parade with Sirius & Lily, skipping and dancing; goes out dancing with James after

Marlene: wears her usual clothes plus lesbian flag bracelets Dorcas made for her; watches the parade, goes to the bars after and drinks “the rainbow” (a drink of every color)

Dorcas: the most beautiful, self-made dress of pink, orange, and white silk, along with beads in her braids; marches the parade with a giant lesbian flag flowing behind her, then walks through the festival with Pandora

Pandora: looks like a fairy princess, rainbow wings included; watches the parade and then skips around the festival, buying stuff from queer vendors

Evan: wears his regular clothes plus a beanie with a rainbow patch; Pandora paints flags on his cheeks as well; watches the parade with Barty and then goes off to have a LOT of gay sex

Barty: dressed completely in leather with a studded collar (Evan is holding the leash); watches the parade with Evan and then goes off to have a LOT of gay sex

Regulus: is fully drowning in one of James’s black hoodies with a pride flag on the front, Pandora painted the trans flag on one cheek; watches his friends in the parade and then joins Remus at home for the evening
