I was born on Yom Kippur, and my mom insisted on fasting the day she gave birth. This should tell you all you need to know about my mother’s commitment to obligations of family and faith. So it should come as no surprise that for as long as I remember, despite the fact that she was fasting herself, she’d manage to prepare an elaborate Persian dinner for my family to break our Yom Kippur fast.
Between long hours at the synagogue and naps to stay alert, my mom would make big, steamy pots of basmati rice with dill and fava beans, and roasted cornish game hens strewn with dried fruit, their skin perfectly crisp, their juices fragrant with saffron and slowly caramelizing onions.
But America has its way of getting under your skin. While we loved these delicious flavors, my sister and I came to realize that our mom’s toiling was just too much, and really, after 25 hours with no food or drink, our bodies actually craved something lighter and simpler.
So, these days, our Yom Kippur break fast is a classic Ashkenazi spread: bagels with cream cheese, lox, and cucumbers — all the new-to-us flavors we’ve come to embrace over our family’s four decades in the United States.
Despite our main course skewing Ashkenazi, one thing hasn’t changed. Just as my parents did with their own families in Iran as far back as they remember, the first three things we consume as soon as we get home from synagogue are pure Iranian Jewish tradition: a cup of hot black tea, a warm, comforting soft-boiled egg, and faloodeh seeb.
Somewhere between a beverage and a dessert, faloudeh seeb is a refreshing mix of shredded apples in a light rosewater syrup, served over ice. You can alternate eating spoonfuls of the apple mixture and sipping the cool, fragrant juice. It’s truly the perfect way to rejuvenate your parched and weary body.
A note on apples: As this recipe is so simple, it’s only as good as its ingredients. Fuji or Gala apples work great here, as do Jonagold, Honeycrisp, or any other crisp, sweet apple. Avoid Granny Smith apples, as they’re too sour, and Red Delicious, as they’re too mealy.
A note on rosewater: Different brands of rosewater vary wildly in their potency. Domestic brands tend to be far less fragrant than imports (typically from Lebanon — I like Cortas), so adjust the rosewater amount to taste. You’ll want the rosewater’s scent and taste to be evident, but not overpowering.

33 Flavors Day
33 Flavors Day is celebrated on March 3 every year. Though the reason for this particular date is not known, many believe that it is when the famous Baskin-Robbins ice cream company was founded. Whether that is true or not, people love to celebrate this day as they try out new flavors that they have not tried before. They can celebrate this day by treating themselves to a well-deserved treat or by taking their friends and family along to their nearest ice cream shop. The timing of the holiday, which falls right in the middle of spring, makes it perfect for eating ice cream.
History of 33 Flavors Day
Ice cream originated in China. From there it was brought to Italy by the famous explorer Marco Polo. He went to China with his father and brother in 1271 on a trading expedition. He was surprised to see frozen food being sold from handcarts on the streets of Peking. It was frozen milk, sometimes flavored with fruit juices. Marco Polo was offered it as a gift. He took it with him to Italy.
From Italy, the idea got across France. In the year 1533, Catherine de Medici of Italy went to France and married the second son of Francis I of France. Catherine took with her a large retinue of cooks. It was they who introduced the new delicacy to the French, who soon discovered how delicious it was. Interestingly, it was again a bride who later brought it to England. This was Henrietta Maria of France, who married Charles I in 1630. The secret of ice cream preparation was brought to England by her cook.
Soon, ice cream spread all over the world, including the U.S. The first wholesale factory for ice cream was in Baltimore. The real development of ice cream, and the ice cream business started flourishing only after 1900 with the development of refrigeration. The basis of all ice cream is milk, cream, sugar, and sometimes even eggs. Vanilla, chocolate, berries, fruit ingredients, and nuts are added as flavors. The ice cream usually contains 20% to 25% cream and milk products, 15% sugar, flavor in small quantities, and a small amount of stabilizer. The stabilizer is used to retain the smoothness of the ice cream by preventing the formation of coarse ice crystals. Pure food gelatin is typically used for this purpose.

CHAPTER ONE
𝙻𝚞𝚌𝚊
"For there is hope in every heart." His mother's sickeningly sweet words oozed from her mouth like honey. She grasped his cheeks harshly, her perfectly manicured nails dug into his flesh leaving behind indents. "Wipe that frown, darling. It's only your first day." Her eyes shone with everything beautiful and gold (though sharing the same eye color, hers belittled his measly ones in comparison).
Wincing slightly, Luca removed her hands from his face. "What's wrong with me attending public school?"
She looked at him in exaggerated disbelief. "Darling, we're aristocrats now! We don't slump it with those below us anymore." She flung her hands in the air dramatically, almost hitting him in the process.
What she meant to say was she's sleeping with the aristocrats now. But of course, he didn't voice that out loud.
Rosalie Jones was -how shall he put this lightly?- an interesting woman with one goal: to survive. And though he of course respected his mother's goal, it didn't mean he approved of her demeaning methods. She'd do anything to shed her image from the past and if donning herself in satin dresses and adorning her neck with strings of pearls and sleeping with married wealthy men is the way then so be it.
Her latest lover, or more preferably husband was none other than Erik Coldwell. A dignified man of few words and even fewer virtues. One of the high-powered patricians that ruled West Mines with a fist of steel. And only just a few months ago became his new stepfather. He'd like to believe that he was simply moved with pity for them and took them in from the kindest of his heart. But he knew that would only be a lie, afterall his mother had him wrapped around her slender finger many years ago and similar to how she gripped his cheek, she also gripped this man's heart and held it in a tight grip of desire.
"But why a Catholic school? You don't even believe in God," His miserable pleas fell upon death's ear.
She ignored him and instead, frowned at his attire. Who could blame her?
In the full length mirror, he could clearly see a tall, lanky boy wearing a navy blue bucket hat and a loose fitted denim jacket. His converse were ragged and beaten up after years of owning them. "Darling, to be frank. You look like crap. Why couldn't you wear the lovely clothes I picked out for you?" She pouted, gesturing to the blazer waistcoat and jeans she laid out on the bed.
"It just isn't my style, Mom," He frowned.
She clicked her tongue. "Ridiculous! You would look marvelous, like a young Prince Harry."
Prince Harry is white, mother. Have you forgotten? Was on the tip of his tongue but a sarcastic drawl interrupted him.
"I do have to agree with your mother for once, Luca." Bright, cerulean eyes met his through the mirror.
Myron Coldwell snorted, "You do look like shit."
Heat crawled at his neck, nipping his skin like a fiery flame. He rubbed the back of his ear, turning away from the mirror, not wanting to see his image anymore.
"Language," His mother reprimanded.
Myron's eyes darkened, and his mouth pulled into a thin line. "You may have forgotten, Rosalie but you're not my fucking mother."
Rosalie pulled back in dismay, her hand meeting her mouth.
Rarely ever experienced, anger enveloped Luca in an overbearing embrace and led him blindly towards the oblivious Myron. Hands holding onto the material of his shirt,he lifted him up to meet his eyes. He gritted out with clenched teeth. "Don't ever disrespect my mother that way." Myron's nose flared, and pure resentment danced in his eyes.
Rosalie touched his shoulder. "Darling?"
He released his hold and Myron collapsed to the ground, coughing. He picked himself up, brushing at his trousers. "I didn't think you had it in you, champ."
"It's me you have the problem with. Not her."
Myron let out a sardonic laugh. "I don't think you understand, you little shithead." He shoved his finger in his face, jamming his nose in the process. "The problem is with this entire fucking household."
The words hung in the air, the atmosphere tense and thick.
"Okay. Okay I believe that will be enough." A booming voice filled with power came from the threshold. Myron twisted his lips into an ugly scowl, with narrowed eyes he followed the movements of Erik Coldwell making his way to the middle of the room. The persian rug softened the sounds of his loafers clad shoes as he paused at Luca's side, laying a firm hand upon his shoulder.
"What's going on here?" Though the question was directed to all, his attention zeroed in on Myron.
"Nothing," Luca said.
Myron huffed, and stubbornly looked away. In that exact moment, he reminded Luca of an edgy poet with a wicked gleam in his eye, tousled hair, ink-stained fingertips and a black turtleneck. What a troubled boy.
"Luca and Rosalie are family now, and you will do everything in your power to treat them with the respect they deserve," Erik said.
"Funny, where was the same respect for mom?" Myron snarled, tremors running through his body, hands clenched into fists by his side.
Erik folded his arms, voice stern. "Do not bring your mother into this mess. Let her rest in peace. You will not sully her name."
Myron shook his head in disbelief. "God, I hate you."
Erik didn't even falter. "You will bring Luca with you to school, this is all that I ask."
"Fuck you." He barrelled past them, almost knocking Luca off his feet.
Erik sighed, pulling his mother into his arms. She kissed his cheek, wrapping her hand around his waist. "I want to apologise for my son's behavior, Luca. He means no harm. He's in a very reckless phase in his life."
Luca didn't quite understand how Erik was so placid after losing his wife only a couple months ago. Luca almost pitied Myron. He forced a smile to slip on his face and waved it off, "It's okay."
"Darling, you should hurry before he leaves," His mother said.
"If he hasn't already," Erik sighed. "I won't be surprised."
Surprisingly, Myron did wait for him. He was leaning against the side of his car, an impressive sleek black 1967 Ford Mustang. He had a lit cigarette stuck to his lips and twirled the keys around his finger. "Stop gawking and let's go."
To ease the tension, Luca gracefully slid into the backseat. He started the engine and the car purred to life. The early morning dew crept on the surface of the glass fogging the window. Luca wiped the glass with his sleeves. Alabaster clouds idle lazily in the soft skies, wisps of saffron yellow mingling in the midst of gentle strokes of blue;a quiet destruction.
Rage over a lost penny by Beethoven played through the stereos, this came to a shock to Luca since he didn't peg Myron as the type to listen to classical music. The symphonic music continued to fill the air, the faster the tempo increased, the harder he pressed the accelerator. Everything outside becoming a blur.
The academy came to view, and it rendered him speechless. Myron maneuvered the car through a small pathway that encircled the school. As they drew closer, he marveled at the prehistoric beauty the academy seemed to possess. Gracing his sight were twin ivory towers that stood imposing up close. As they neared the parking lot, students hurried along with tailored, pleated trousers, foggy glasses from the early morning dew and leather bound bags crammed with textbooks and notes.
"Close your mouth or you'll catch flies," Myron said, eyes flickering to the rear-view mirror.
Though his mouth was closed and in fact, not gaping wide open like he'd just stated. The familiar heat crept at his neck at the derisive tone in his taunting remark. "It's beautiful," He said, and he meant it. Romanesque architecture was an architect he admired deeply.
They pulled into a parking lot filled with 1957 Corvettes and Volkswagen beetles. He parked his car into an empty lot supposedly reserved for staff. Myron tilted the rearview mirror and ran his fingers through his hair. "Let's make one thing clear, Jones. At school, we're strangers. I don't know you and you don't know me. Capiche?" He twisted the rearview mirror back in place meeting his eye.
"Yeah," Luca mumbled.
"Don't speak to me and don't make eye contact with me in the hallways," He continued, "Now get out of my car before people see us together."
When Luca didn't leave, he cocked a brow. "Well? Fuck off." Luca hurriedly unbuckled his seat belt and exited the car. Without a backward glance, he left Myron behind.
Luca longed to twirl on the balls of his feet like a graceful ballerina under the grand ornate chandelier hanging loosely from the high ceiling, glimmering like thousands of refulgent stars. But instead, he tightened his grip on his denim jacket- already an outcast from the sea of affluent scholars dressed in vintage clothing.
"You must be Luca Jones. Welcome to West Mines Academy." A fiercely beautiful, dark skin girl stood before him.
"Uh, yes. It is I." It is I? Luca slightly winced. But either the girl failed to notice or she simply didn't care.
She smiled in amusement. "I'm Olivia St.Moore. You can consider me somewhat of your guide today. Let's hurry along, shall we?" They interlocked arms and walked the halls of West Mines Academy.
She told him everything at once until it left his head swimming. She spoke about their history, (something about an European traveler laying claim to this land to an ecclesiastic declaring it as a church many years later then remodeling it to become an all boy's Catholic school then finally, opening their doors for women decades later- she stated the latter with a proud gleam. "Equality shall reign," she had said.) the students activities and went over his class schedule.
"I know it's a lot to take in but you'll get the hang of it. Usually the headmaster does this sort of thing but.." Her sentence trailed off.
He'd already know what she meant to say.
"Let me guess, he wouldn't waste time and energy on someone like me? Am I right? Someone that's not filled with riches ."
"I'm sorry, Luca. That's just the way it is," she winced.
She brought him to the right wing through a deep archway that led to a hallway of lockers. She paused in front of a locker and dutifully handed him a paper and written in the prettiest calligraphy was his locker number and code. Olivia unlocked her locker and pulled out her textbooks, gathering them into the crook of her arm.
She slammed it shut and pursed her deep fuchsia colored lips. "Our town is quite an interesting one, wouldn't you say?"
Luca cocked his head to the side. "I would like to think so?"
She sighed, tilting her head slightly in his direction. "Our history is quite a complicated one. One I promise to tell you all about when we have the time." She looked down at her diamond-rimmed piaget watch adorning her wrist. "Why don't you hurry along to your first class before you receive a demerit."
With that, they walked briskly to their assigned classes, departing ways. And for some reason, it left a hollow feeling in his chest. And he realized that feeling was loneliness.
──────
His day flew by quickly. The highlight of his day however was gaining the attention of his eccentric english teacher. It was after class and the peculiar professor had their feet propped on the desk, reading an underrated classic that he'd favor since he was a young boy:The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. When he pointed it out, they jumped out of their seats like their pants were lit on fire. They leaned forward, their eyes dancing with excitement.
"Ah! What a deliciously disturbing work Poe had bestowed upon us, wouldn't you say, young lad?" They sing-songed.
"It must be understood, that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will," They continued, "Do you truly believe this is a tale of revenge as he states to us in the beginning, or is it a tale of jealousy fueled by insanity and madness?"
Luca pondered, and decided to say, "I believe it's rather an eloquent book that Poe wrote and refreshing that he has the ability to delve into the taboo and twist the reader's mind with such macabre writing. The narrator in this story is undoubtedly an unreliable one; therefore, who are we to take his word for it? He may have vowed this was a tale of revenge, but his actions led me to believe jealousy was truly the stem of it all, as it is mostly the case."
They clapped madly, startling the students coming into the room for their next class. "How splendid! A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong," They said. "My my my, Mr Jones was it? What a marvelous young man you are. My word will reach you soon."
Luca left them with that final statement, bemused. It was only a few hours later, he had understood what they meant. He was in the main wing, leaning against a pearl statue of Mary Magdalene. Whispers of new students and family of new money tickled his ears yet he had yet to come across the supposedly new students. The teacher's word came in a form of a dainty girl with long, mahogany hair framing her elfin face. She wore a beige cardigan tucked neatly into her vintage check pleated skirt.
Tucking her hair behind her ear, she murmured. "Pleasure to meet you." Up close he saw a little cherub pendant dangling from her slim neck.
"Hello," He said.
She slid a slip of paper into the palm of his hand. "From Professor Bishop." And with that, she waved him goodbye and walked off in the opposite direction. Luca stared at her retreating figure in wonder, then looked down at the slip of paper, his fingers tingling from the skin on skin contact. The paper gave a cryptic message, it read: St. Michael the Archangel wing, Room 113, 3pm.
Call it curiosity if you will, but whatever it was led him to his current predicament. Sitting in a circle, he sat amongst an odd group of pretentious scholars that looked like they belonged in the 20th century, England not the small quaint town of West Mines, in the 21st century. They wore cardigans and sweaters vests in muted colors and tweed trousers. They smoked cigars and smelt of black coffee. They debated philosophy and read prose, and discussed french revolutionaries not everyday mundane topics.
There was Alaric Sebastian Watson (he preferred to go as 'Rick', he said Alaric was too iffy), an orgulous lad with bushy brows and ash freckles peppered across his face. Then there was Cyrus Rothschild. His handsome features sharp and hard like a cut diamond in the rough. Thick lips shaped as the curved body of a bow. Perched on the chair with crossed legs and fingers thumbing through the sepia pages of a foreign novel, the title written in Latin, forbidding Luca from understanding. Then, Luca's eyes bounced to the girl he met earlier (he learned her name was Aspen Berkshire) sitting elegantly next to Cyrus. She was leaning against his shoulders, her hands alighted on his knee. She felt his eyes upon her and she looked up, giving him a half smile. Luca quickly averted his eyes and his attention strayed towards the narrowed eyes of Myron. It surprised him immensely when he'd found out Myron was here. Myron, as expected, was not too happy about his presence either. He swore Luca did this to spite him. Then lastly, was Olivia St.Moore. She stood in the centre, head raised in poise, giving her the air of a regal queen.
"First and foremost, I would like to welcome Luca Jones not only to the literature club but to West Mines Academy."
Literature club?
Myron stifled a yawn, Alaric gave a haughty laugh, Cyrus merely lifted his bored gaze for a split second before lowering his eyes back to his latest read and Aspen, oh sweet Aspen clapped politely.
Luca's face burned red.
Before he could open his mouth however, someone bursted into the room, slamming the door open. Luca almost jumped out of his seat, yet the other students obviously used to this merely sighed and one person muttered under their breath: "Here we go again."
"My apologies, everyone." Professor Bishop Shawford scratched the back of their head, their wire frame glasses slipping ever so slightly. They hurried to the blackboard, however their satchel somehow caught at the edge of the desk, causing their notes to scatter.
Aspen sighed, and bent her knees to pick up the scattered notes. "Oh heavens no, what a mess! Thank you my dear. Ah." They surveyed the room until their eyes fell upon Luca. "Mr. Jones, you've arrived. Welcome, so glad to have a new member. This calls for a celebration." Suddenly, they went to a backdoor Luca hadn't seen before, then came back wheeling in a small cart of victorian style tea cup sets.
"As you already know, I'm Professor Bishop Shawford, you can please kindly and respectfully refer to me as they/them pronouns." They passed along chamomile tea to each of them, already familiar with their preference. "Milk, honey?"
"Honey, will be fine," Luca replied.
Bishop continued, "Not only do I teach here at this academy, but I work as a college professor at the St. Catherine University in the next town over."
"Yeah they teach humanities, philosophy and intro to ethics," Aspen piped in, over her cup of tea.
"That's nothing," Alaric smirked. "My cousin, Walsh? You remember Walsh right? Anyway, he teaches ten courses at Harvard. Impressive, if I do say so myself. And he has like three PhDs. How many PhDs do you have, professor?" He slurped on his tea with his pinkie raised in the air.
Olivia rolled her eyes. "Does it matter?"
Bishop blinked rapidly, their mouth opening and closing. "Well, just one." Then the familiar look of bliss fell across their androgynous features. "And I'm quite satisfied with it. Anyway, Mr. Jones, the literature club- don't mind the name, we're working on it, is simply a group of young students like yourselves who come together to discuss the fine language of english literature. Quite fascinating, isn't it?"
"I still don't get why he's got to be here," Myron muttered bitterly under his breath.
"Well Mr. Coldwell, our dear friend is here today because I couldn't resist! It would be such a shame to have missed this opportunity. Oh goodness me, I'm afraid I would have to cut this meeting short. I have a seminar I must attend to in the next fifteen minutes. My my my, see how the time has run. Ah but Punctuality is the thief of time. Any idea who said that fine line? "
"Twas Oscar Wilde," Cyrus answered, speaking up for the first time. "I am always late on principle, my principle being that punctuality is the thief of time. You best do to hurry up, Professor."
They grabbed his satchel and patted them on their heads. "Splendid! The meeting is over. I will see you all tomorrow. This goes for you too, Mr Jones." Luca nodded, satisfied, they left.
When Luca arrived home, he was beat. Today was a very interesting day indeed. Somehow he knew deep down that he would become like the strange individuals he met earlier. His mother was gone for the day, perhaps on her sixth shopping spree. He decided to work on his homework before it piled up on him in the upcoming weeks. Lofi music quietly played in the background as Luca flipped through his pages. Before he knew it, three hours has passed and through his open window night has fallen and the moon hovered anxiously like a coddling mother.
His door slid open, a sliver of orange light was seen. His mother popped her head in and she gave a soft, tired smile. "Darling, how was the school? The students? Was the school beautiful as the brochure showed?"
He answered her rapid questions: "Fine. Interesting. And the brochure couldn't possibly capture its beauty."
She gave a sigh of relief. "At least something good came off from all this." He didn't question what she meant, he could only wonder. She ruffled his head, and placed a kiss on his forehead. And with that, she left and shut his bedroom door shut.
It was 2 am when Myron came home stoned. Luca was looking up at his ceiling, deep in thought. His last cup of tea grew lukewarm on his bedside table. There was angry shouting and doors being slammed. Then the screeching of his car could be heard from outside as he departed. Then, silence. Pure and utter silence.
Luca pulled the cover up to his lips and closed his eyes. He couldn't help but think, what will tomorrow bring?

Code Lyoko Pokemon AU
Jeremy is from the Johto region and specializes with electric and steel type Pokemon. His father was a Pokemon researcher and Jeremy wants to follow in his father's footsteps by traveling the world and discovering as many different types of Pokemon as possible. He starts his journey on a mission to collect data for the Pokemon Professors, which will hopefully benefit all of their research. His starter Pokemon, despite being from Johto, is a Beldum. When he was younger, he accompanied his father on a research trip to Hoenn when they encountered an injured Beldum. Jeremy had insisted they bring the wild Pokemon to the Pokemon center and was by its side the entire time. The Beldum had bonded with Jeremy and the two had become inseparable ever since.
Jeremy's complete Pokemon team includes his Beldum/Metang/Metagross, Magnemite/Magneton, Rotom, Porygon, Bronzor, and a Joltik/Galvantula.
Ulrich comes from Hoenn, and comes from a family of gym leaders. There's a lot of pressure on Ulrich to one day take over the gym and be Hoenn's master of fighting types. And of course, because of his family, he specializes with fighting types. His starter pokemon was a Torchic, a decision pushed upon him by his family because Torchic's evolutions are dual fire and fighting types. Ulrich, frustrated with the expectations set up for him, ran away from home to try his hand at becoming the Pokemon Champion. His thought process is that if he can accomplish something no one else in his family has, maybe they will back off and leave him alone. What he doesn't anticipate is that, if he did become the Pokemon Master, his family would pressure him to settle for nothing but the best and hold that position. The first person he meets on his journey is Odd, because he helped Odd out in a jam. Ever since then he hasn't been able to shake him, not that he really minds if he is being honest.
Ulrich's complete Pokemon team includes his Torchic/Combustion/Blaziken, Heracross, Croagunk/Toxicroak, Scraggy/Scrafty, a Rhyhorn/Rhydon, and Honedge/Doublade/Aegislash
Ulrich does catch other Pokemon that aren't fighting types at all like a Misdreavus, Spoink, and Houndour. But he tends to keep them in the PC box/safe with Professor Birch at his lab and only call on them when he needs them. Old habits with using only fighting types die really hard. Honedge is also a nod towards the sword and Ulrich's Lyoko weapon in the series.
Odd, on the other hand, unlike Ulrich and Jeremy, doesn't have any type preference whatsoever. He has more of an appearance aesthetic but even then he doesn't hold strictly to it. Odd came from a family of Pokemon lovers, and comes from Kalos. His family run a Pokemon Daycare and as such, Odd has a lot of hands on experience working with all types of Pokemon. His starter Pokemon was Fennekin, whom he loves to pet and is not too particular about keeping in their Pokeball at all times. Odd just wants to travel the globe with his Pokemon for the fun. He's not on any particular mission like Ulrich or Jeremy to accomplish a grander goal. He's just there for the ride and to make memories.
The first person Odd meets in the group is Ulrich. Odd had been rushing to the Pokemon Center with his Pokemon because of a really difficult battle he'd been in for fun. Who knew a Bonsley could pack such a punch right? At the time, Odd only had two Pokemon with him, and his Teddiursa had fainted in the previous battle. Fennekin wasn't exactly in tip top shape either but he ran into two biker goons who were trying to get him into a double battle he had no chance in winning in order to get into the Pokemon center. It was pure luck on his part that Ulrich showed up when he did, sending out his Torchic and Heracross to protect him. Ever since then, when they walked side by side into the Pokemon center, Odd had seen Ulrich as a friend for life and stuck by him ever since. And Odd is always repaying the favor, battling alongside Ulrich whenever needed in double or even triple battles. Odd was also the one who roped the both of them into Aelita and Jeremy's lives.
Odd's complete Pokemon team includes his Fennekin/Braixen/Delphox, Teddiursa/Ursaring, Magikarp/Gyarados, Eevee/Glaceon, Gligar/Gliscor, and Purrloin/Liepard
Odd has loads more Pokemon than this, such as a Meowth/Persian, Slakoth, Mime Jr., Taillow/Swellow, and a Pansage. He is also the only one to nickname all of his Pokemon. Fennekin is nicknamed Kiwi (because what else would his starter Pokemon be called even if they aren't a dog based Pokemon), Teddiursa is Lychee, Magikarp is Mango, Eevee is Avens, Gligar is Durian, and Purrloin is Aster. Most of these names are based on fruit and all of them are technically based on plants. Meowth is named Maple, Slakoth is Galen, Mime Jr. is Murphy, Taillow is Lula-Belle, and Pansage is Clover.
Delphox's ability to stare into the fire and see the fire is a nod towards Odd's old Future Vision ability and Glaceon's ability to freeze its fur and shoot it out like needles is a nod towards Odd's laser arrows. Odd, as a lover of animals, is destined to always have the most Pokemon. The Pokemon he does not carry with him are transfer to his home, where they are well loved by his family.
Yumi is the only one of the group who doesn't come from a family with a history with Pokemon. She grew up in Kanto, in Saffron City, and her family was not particularly attached to Pokemon. They didn't hate Pokemon, but they didn't really see the value of traveling with Pokemon and training with them. It was never really a desire of theirs. Yumi's starter Pokemon was an Abra, who she had found abandoned in the city. The Abra's previous owner had abandoned him because the only move the Pokemon knew was Teleport and was, in their view, impossible to train. Yumi had found the injured and scared Pokemon being harassed by a group of older kids who had Pokemon of their own. Despite being late for her martial arts lessons, Yumi had started to fight the older trainers with nothing but her fists and her martial arts skills. The trainers had laughed at her and beat her up, even having their Pokemon tackle her to try and scare her off. It hadn't worked and she fended off the three until they were fed up dealing with her. Yumi took the Abra with her to practice, hiding it in her bag and in the changing room because she was scared they'd come back. She also secret took the Abra home and hid it in her room. Of course, her parents found out that Yumi had brought a Pokemon home without their permission and they were mad. They were proud what she did, they raised her to protect anyone being treated poorly, but still angry. But they agreed that as long as Yumi took responsibility for the Abra, the Abra could stay.
Yumi's bond with her Abra was the reason she wanted to travel the world and become a Pokemon trainer. To be very honest, she's caught between wanting to compete as a Pokemon Champion or becoming a Pokemon Contest Coordinator. She finds a lot of joy in both, in the battling and in presenting the best sides of her Pokemon. She wants the world to see how beautiful they are even if her Pokemon don't follow that "cute and cuddly" mold people expect to see in Pokemon contests.
Yumi doesn't seem to specialize in any particular Pokemon type like her friends do, but she does favor psychic types a lot more than others. Her complete Pokemon team includes her Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar, Mankey/Primeape, Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir, Wobbuffet, and Shinx/Luxio/Luxray.
Because Alakazam's are able to use telekinesis, Yumi having one is a nod towards her telekinesis ability in Lyoko. And her Mankey is a nod to her own fighting prowess.
Aelita is also from Kalos, just like Odd, and specializes in Fairy Type Pokemon. Aelita's complete Pokemon team includes her starter, Dedenne, Snubbull/Granbull, Chikorita/Bayleaf/Meganium, Eevee/Silveon, Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite, and Mantyke. She has Fairy types mainly because her Lyoko form is designed as an elf and can be considered part of a fairy tale aesthetic.
Aelita's parents were also Pokemon researchers, like Jeremy's, but her father got involved with the wrong type of people to put it very mildly. Aelita has connections to the newest evil organization, known as X.A.N.A., that was trying to take over the world and stealing everyone's Pokemon. And for some reason, they are out to get her specifically. She has no memories of the past, so she doesn't know anything about her connection to them, or that her family is working alongside them. Jeremy finds her being attacked by one of the goons in the middle of a really bad rainstorms and comes to her rescue. Because the storm was getting really bad, he had no choice but to bring her to the nearest Pokemon center. He stayed with her throughout the entire night, taking care of her Pokemon as well. During the storm, the power went out, and some of the goons returned to try and kidnap Aelita. Jeremy fended them off as best he could with his Beldum, and luckily it was at that moment that Ulrich and Odd came running out to see what all the commotion was. The commotion had awoken Aelita, who was utterly astounded by their bravery and kindness.
They hadn't been out of the woods yet though. Aelita explains to the boys that she had been with another trainer, who had helped her take care of her Dedenne back in the woods. She explained that they came into the town together, and that the other girl had promised to help her get to the police station to check if maybe someone had reported her missing. They'd been attacked by those goons and Yumi had told Aelita to run when it was becoming overwhelming, insisting on holding them off with her Abra and Ghastly. Aelita had run but one of the goons, the goon Jeremy rescued her from, had broken away and caught up to her. Aelita, worried about what had happened to Yumi, insists on going to search for her. The boys agree to help her and make a plan to let Aelita get captured so they can follow the goons in the hopes that the goons had apprehended Yumi and were only holding her hostage. Aelita had never been more relieved in her life to see that Yumi was okay, just bruised up a bit. And once all five of them are together, X.A.N.A.'s goons don't stand a chance against them. Like seriously, it's crazy how five kids who just met each other are able to take down a bunch of evil adults and their Pokemon. And seeing how much danger Aelita is in, none of them are really willing to leave her to her own devices and are genuinely curious about what X.A.N.A. is up to. Why do they need Aelita? What are they plotting?
And then there's William. William is from Sinnoh, and he's considered a dark type Pokemon specialist. His starter Pokemon was a Corphish, but when the group meet him, he has a Crawdaunt. Just like in the series, William has a thing for Yumi which irks Ulrich despite the fact that she doesn't reciprocate William's feelings. His persistence actually makes her a bit uncomfortable, which only gives her Pokemon more of a reason to not trust or like William. William ends up working willingly for X.A.N.A. (as opposed to being forced in the cartoon), and was trying to gain the groups trust so that he would be able to travel with them and secretly relay to X.A.N.A. where Aelita was at all times. He genuinely wants Yumi to join X.A.N.A. alongside him, because otherwise he has to destroy her and he doesn't want to do that. He'll happily destroy the others though.
His complete Pokemon team includes his Crawdaunt, Tentacool/Tentacruel, Spinarak/Ariados, Absol, Pawniard/Bisharp, and Tyrantrum. The Tentacool/Tentacruel is a nod towards the scyphozoa that XANA used in the series to gain control of William in the first place. The Spinarak/Ariados is another nod to the series and how he was afraid of spiders but, under XANA's influence would ride the Tarantula into battle. And the Pawniard/Bisharp is a nod to his sword in a similar way Honedge is to Ulrich.

To be the Best(Kanto): A Pokémon Fanfic Chapter 1: Brother and Sister
“Brrring, Brrring” The ringing of a telephone broke the silence of an otherwise dead quiet building. Not three rings in, and the call was answered by a purple haired woman with fiery red glasses to match her eyes and a mahogany colored business suit.
“You’ve reached Team Rocket headquarters, this is Matori speaking, how may I transfer your call?” She asked into the other line. If one was far enough way, only incoherent babbling could be heard, but Matori, keeping the receiver close to her ear listened to every word and smiled, “I’ll get him on the line as soon as possible.” Matori pressed a button on the intercom next to her and spoke into it, “Sir, you have a call from the Saffron City prison, I’m transferring it to you right now.” In what seemed like nanoseconds, Matori no longer took to the call, instead, a tall man shrouded in shadows took over, his sleek beige cat Pokémon Persian on his lap, napping away and allowing its master to stroke it.
“This is Giovanni speaking, if this is Jessie and James calling, hang up now.” The man said before a few seconds of silence. “Ah, Butch and Cassidy, my favorite cohorts, what is it you need this time? Another bail out of prison? I’d be happy to do so.” The man’s assumption was shot down as the conversation continued, “I see... yes... a marvelous idea... perhaps with that insolent child away at who knows where, we can finally get some things done around here... We’ll follow through with your plan... The Kanto region will never suspect a thing...” Giovanni chuckled darkly as he hung up and continued to pet his Persian.
“Mrrrr... Miaow...” Persian happily cooed as its master pet it affectionately.
“Soon, my pet, we’ll have all of Kanto to ourselves, everyone, that’s EVERYONE will answer to only one name: Team Rocket!”
—————————————————————
The World of Pokémon, a place filled with creatures and people of all shapes and sizes, though it may seem impossible, humans and Pokémon have been together since the dawn of time, and have grown and evolved to share the small world with which they inhabit. Some people use Pokémon to fight each other in hopes of one day becoming Pokémon Masters. Others have them as pets, and some even use them for research purposes. With 18 elemental types and over 800 creatures in the world with more being discovered day by day, the world continues to flourish and adapt to make these two species continue to coexist in harmony even amongst conflict.
In the beautiful Kalos region, a small sleepy town by the name of Vaniville received a special wake up call when a bright red and white bird Pokémon flew in from the sky and landed on the mailbox of one house, reached into its bag-like tail, and pulled out an envelope before finally depositing it into the slot of the mailbox.
A young teenage boy watched the sight in anticipation and wonder from the window on the inside. He had messy dark grey hair, almost black, and lighter grey eyes, as well as a bright yellow sweater, concealing a navy blue t-shirt underneath, which matched his pants, and black shoes to match his hair. As soon as the Pokémon deposited its mail, the boy ran outside and smiled brightly.
“Thanks, Delibird!” He shouted as he waved goodbye to the mail Pokémon
“Deli-Deli!” It cried, waving back before flying off into the horizon.
The boy excitedly opened the mailbox and saw the very same envelope Delibird had delivered, not taking into account any other letters the Pokémon may have dropped off.
“Addressed to: Francois Robin Jr...” He read as he tore open the envelope hastily, praying in his head that what he opened contained what he was so desperately waiting for. He closed his eyes tightly and reached inside. Thin pieces of paper, rectangular shaped, two by four feeling. He narrowly and slowly opened one eye... and the other one shot open in excitement when he finally unveiled the contents: two tickets for a one-way trip to the Kanto region. “Yes!” He shouted before running excitedly back inside, “Maria! Sis! Maria!” He cried as he entered his room, amongst all the Pokémon books that stood tall on his bookshelf next to his bed that had its covers cast aside to the floor, there was another bed in the same room, this one was fluffier and pure white, in contrast to Francois’s maroon red bed sheets. In the bed was a teenage girl, about Francois’s age, but perhaps a month or so younger, unlike her brother, her hair was light brown, which complimented her hazelnut eyes, and her pajamas were light pink, she had her head buried underneath her pillow and groaned.
“Frankie... What time is it...? Can’t it wait til I wake up...?” She complained groggily.
“Yeah, it could, but then we might miss our flight...” Frankie said, this comment piqued Maria’s interest as she lifted the pillow from her head and groggily stared at her brother.
“Flight? What are you talking about?” She asked with a yawn as she rubbed her eyes.
“Only... THIS!” Frankie wasted no time in shoving the tickets to Kanto right in Maria’s face, and just like that, she was wide awake and snatched one from him in awe.
“No way! They came?! For real?!” She asked
“Yeah! I got up at 6:00 just to make sure I got them the moment they arrived!”
“You got up at 6?” Maria scratched her head in confusion, “You went to sleep at 5:00 if I’m not mistaken...”
“I know! I’m really sleepy and I wanna drop dead from exhaustion right now! But I can’t and I won’t! This is too good to disrespect with a fainting spell! Maria! 14 long years of waiting... And today’s the day we finally become Pokémon trainers!”
“No fooling! I need to get ready!” Though Frankie knew Maria well as being laid back and somewhat lazy, he was happy to see her as ecstatic as he was about such an occasion. When both were infants and needed to be occupied for a bit while their parents focused on something, Frankie and Maria were sat down in front of the TV to watch official Pokémon league battles. Maria watched in intrigue, but Frankie couldn’t believe his eyes, the biggest and toughest Pokémon were what piqued his interest the most, as such a small young man, showing off with a huge Charizard or Gyarados would be sure to strike fear into opposing people’s hearts and make them think twice before messing with him.
During summer months, while Maria watched tv, exclusively Pokémon related shows be it mystery or cartoon, Frankie was reading every last bit of information on Pokémon he could. He didn’t know when exactly he would become a trainer, but he wanted to be ready for it, as such, he was able to memorize nearly all known Pokémon’s movesets, typing, evolution lines, and locations to find them, and while catching them all wasn’t a goal of his, he did want to one day stand with the best, no matter how long it took, and as a growing boy, seeing a few pretty faces here and there was a bonus to his eventual travels.
While Maria wasn’t nearly as well versed in Pokémon as her brother, her consistent viewing of Pokémon related shows opened her eyes to all the kinds of moves Pokémon could learn, and whether or not they were good, she just had to see the moves executed in real life for once.
Frankie was in the kitchen making breakfast, bacon sandwiches with fresh Moo Moo Cheese, in anticipation for Maria to make herself presentable, though the smell of delicious food attracted someone else, his father. His father was huge, dark skinned and somewhat squinty eyed, his hair was jet black like his sons, but his eyes were as brown as his daughters, the two take a lot more from their mother, who had moved to the Alola Region in the far South to pursue a more well paying job opportunity, but both sides still keep in touch, and remain loyal to each other even to this day.
“Good morning, son.” Frankie’s father said in his deep rumble voice, not too different from a Charizard’s.
“Hey, Papa, breakfast is ready!” Frankie replied, causing the older man to chuckle
“That’s my boy, ah, if your mother could see you now... and she said getting you involved in the culinary world would be a waste of time!” At this point, Frankie’s father, formally known as Mr. Robin grabbed a sandwich and helped himself to Orange Juice, “I hear Maria in the shower, is today what I think it is?”
“Yeah! I was getting a little worried, but the tickets finally came!” Frankie showed his father the tickets, who let out a booming laugh
“Good! Good! You’ve been waiting too long for this day! If you ever get to Alola, make sure you tell Mom I said Hello, and that I’m ready to cook for her once she gets home.” Mr. Robin tussled his son’s hair, earning a chuckle from him
“I will, Papa... I hope my first Pokémon will grow to be big and tough just like you! I want a Charmander! Getting to fly on the back of a huge hulking Charizard, breathing fire, striking terror into people among the mountains and on the ground, riding into battle—“
“Well, I don’t need to ask if you’re excited, I suppose! Maria must be too if she’s up this early!” At that very moment, Maria came into kitchen
“Morning bro, morning Pop!” She said, rejuvenated from her slumber. Maria donned a mahogany colored sweater with brown leggings and boots and a pair of dark purple suspenders. Her outfit complimented her brown eyes and sharp light brown hair done up in a ponytail well. “Is that breakfast I smell?”
“Sure is, better start eating up, we don’t wanna miss our flight!” Frankie said as Maria grabbed a sandwich
“Wait, you just barely got your tickets today, the day of your flight?” Mr. Robin asked
“If we’re blaming anyone, it should be the mail people” Maria said with her mouth full before swallowing, “Frankie’s been keeping updated on the delivery of the tickets ever since he ordered them.”
“I was crying two nights before thinking they’d never come in” Frankie admitted
“Well, whatever. You two best get a move on in that case. Your old man can guard the fort all by himself well enough.” Mr. Robin glanced at a Poké Ball on a shelf hanging above the kitchen cupboards, right next to it was a photo of him when he was ten years old and a small chubby blueish Pokémon, a Munchlax, and next to that picture was him a little older with his fully evolved Snorlax.
“We know, Papa...” Frankie said as he and Maria hugged their father tightly, “We’ll miss you...”
“Yeah... But you’re gonna do good, ok? Good looks ain’t the only things you took from papa, eh?” Mr. Robin asked his son as he ruffled his hair, earning a chuckle from him. “Same goes for you, Maria, it’ll be good for you to get moving around anyway.”
“Yeah... Moving around...” Maria said with a slight smirk, thinking of the pleasant thought of getting a large flying Pokémon for her to ride on when her feet got tired.
“Now I love you two very much, but you need to get out of here! Quick! Go go go go!”
“You’re right, papa! We love you too! We’ll see you later!” Frankie said as he ran in place in anticipation, followed by Maria saying,
“If we don’t come back, tell our story!”
“Don’t say that!” Frankie yelled as Maria chuckled, both rushing out the door and into town as their father smiled.
“Good luck you too...” He said before looking to the sky, wondering what their mom would say had she been there.
—————————————————————
The plane was a distant walk over to the grand Lumiose City, so Frankie And Maria had to pick up the pace as quick as possible.
“Maria, come on! Get those feet moving!” Frankie cried, his sleeplessness seemingly gone away in exchange for pure excitement, as Maria walked behind him
“I would if you slowed down!” She complained
“If I slow down we’ll miss our flight! And I’m not missing our flight! Cuz if we do, I’ll snap.”
“Still... It’ll be a while ‘til we can see Kalos again... How about we power walk and take everything in one last time?”
“Well... I suppose that’s... not a bad idea.” Frankie then turned to the wilderness that existed beyond his home town, “Don’t worry, Kalos! We’ll be exploring you soon!”
“Well said! Continue to lead the way, bro! At a slower place...”
“Yeah... sure thing...” He said with a slight blush, and with that, the two young siblings were off on their own for the very first time, expecting to see many new things. Whether it be Pokémon not native to Kalos, beautiful women and attractive men, different smells, or even the fresh tasting Kantonian air, both couldn’t be any more excited. However, their anticipation would be met with something much, much more different than anticipated...
