Persian Goftogu Thanksgiving
Over Thanksgiving break, my aunt and cousin from France visited my family. We spent the holiday with our family members, friends, and lots of food. During their time with us, I could speak to engage in goftogu with my aunt, and she was truly impressed by the progression from when I first started our class to now. During our conversation, we spoke about her travels from France to the United States, how the weather was in France, and how she was excited to see me. I responded by asking her how she was doing, how work was, and my mutual exactness that she was here spending time with me! Our conversation was a very meaningful experience because the last time I saw my aunt in June, I spoke no Farsi but only knew a few words and commands. She was truly impressed to see that I had dramatically improved by being able to fully read and write in just a few months. Accompanied by our conversation were tons of pictures, videos, and WhatsApp memes she always loves showing me. As well as Persian music, during our conservation, I told her we listened to the song Gentlemen by Sasy, and I was surprised to hear that she had heard the song and liked it! She told me one of her favorite songs is شب رویایی by آرون افشار, which we listened to, and she showed me some of her dancing skills. I enjoyed my break with my family and immersed myself in my Persian culture, and I have started to become a role model to my younger cousins, who want to learn Farsi because I am. I hope to keep our familial language strong within our family, and it starts with each speaking experience you have with a native speaker. I look forward to continuing to improve my Farsi and strengthening my connection to my heritage with every conversation I have.

من یک فیلم دیدم
On December 3, 2020, I decided to watch a well-regarded Persian short film called روتوش, or “Retouch.” The film was produced by Iranian director Kaveh Mazaheri and has won three Academy Awards at the Tribeca, Palm Springs ShortFest, and Krakow film festivals. In short, the film was about a woman in Iran who was stuck in an aimless routine working as a retouch artist and caring for her child and husband. The film shows her choice to watch her husband die rather than save him, and follows her emotionless day afterward. The title, Retouch, stems from the woman’s job, but more importantly, from the idea that the woman is given the pivotal opportunity to “retouch” her life. She could either remain unhappy saving her husband or she can save herself by gaining freedom from her marriage.
I enjoyed the film. Although the content seemed unusual at first, the woman’s composure and silent struggle to complete her trivial, daily tasks expose how gender norms in Iran diminish the meaning of life for women. Through her initial uncertainty with her feelings about the death and her eventual satisfaction, the film corroborated my preconceptions of how the traditional Iranian roles for women as the obedient caretaker are unfortunately still relevant today. But, further, how they need to be somehow adjusted. I was surprised that the government did not censor the film because of this message.
In the US, although the general consensus is that women do not belong solely in the house, there are exceptions and many still do not see women as capable of holding positions of great power such as working as politicians

Photography as National Reconciliation in Iran
Last year, I took a course on Iran that inspired me to not only learn more about Iran but led me to learning Persian. The most memorable part of the course was a guest speaker our professor brought to speak to our class (and the public), the Iranian photographer, Azadeh Akhlaghi. Since then I have continued to follow her work with earnest and over the weekend Middle East Eye featured her in an article, “Beyond realism, Iran’s photographs recreate images of the nation.”
What I find so striking and unique about Akhlaghi’s work is her use of staged theatrical photographs to recreate historic deaths that changed her country. She reawakens the collective memory of the Iranian people, bringing to the forefront of the national imagination a recreation of the seventeen deaths that changed the country in her exhibit “By an Eye-Witness.”
Mohamed Mossadegh, March 5, 1967. Copyright: Azadeh Akhlaghi from Mohsen Gallery.
The selected deaths span from the pre-revolutionary period beginning in the Constitutional period to the Pahlavi era, the Mosaddegh era, the Revolution, and the Iran-Iraq war, her time period mainly covers the years between 1906 and 1979. By re-creating the deaths of these seventeen individuals, Akhlaghi actively intervenes in making herself the intermediary between the dead and the living. Through this process, not only does she provide a vehicle for herself to live the collective memory that shaped these tragic deaths: the poet who died of a tragic and mysterious car accident, the political student activist who was shot point blank, but she also offers young people an opportunity to bear witness. Although she plays the role of mediator, Akhlaghi honors these deaths by drawing them back into the national imagination, an imagination that through her staged photographs she permits all to participate in.
Even the current Islamic Republic regime uses Akhlaghi’s staged photo of the three students murdered at the Faculty of Engineering at Tehran University in 1953 every year to commemorate “Student Day” on December 7.[1] With this project Akhlaghi has engaged all parts of society and invited all to participate in this collective memory experience. By including deaths from the entire political spectrum: leftists, revolutionaries, religious figures, pre-revolutionaries, she has created an equalizer not only across political affiliations but also across generations. She is connecting younger and older generations, those who lived through these deaths and those who now have experienced it through her mediation.

In many ways this is a unifying national project because it shows that everyone lost someone in this violent making of the modern Iranian nation. Akhalghi manages to criticize everyone and no one at the same time. What Akhlaghi does for Iranian collective memory is a powerful expression of showing how every period of Iranian history has witnessed violence and injustice, how every political party and part of society has suffered loss and trauma (there are no winners) and what unites the Iranian nation is more than what serves to divide them. Perhaps unintended, this is a model for national reconciliation unlike any other, one we can (and should) all learn from.

Saffron: The Golden Spice That Weaves Magic into Life
Have you ever held something so small yet so powerful that it could transform everything it touched? That’s saffron a spice so rich in history, culture, and utility that its story is like a thread connecting generations, cuisines, and even wellness trends.
The Allure of Saffron: Why It’s Called “Red Gold”
Saffron isn’t just a spice; it’s an experience. The moment you open a jar of those deep crimson threads, the fragrance of ancient markets and sun-drenched fields fills the air. But saffron isn’t just about its luxurious aroma or the gorgeous golden hue it adds to food it’s about how it makes you feel.
Here’s a fun fact: it takes around 75,000 saffron flowers to produce just one pound of saffron. That’s why it’s one of the world’s most precious commodities. And guess what? The finest saffron comes from Persia (modern-day Iran), where generations of farmers have perfected the art of cultivating this incredible spice.
Why You Need Saffron in Your Life
Saffron is like the Swiss Army knife of spices it does everything.
For Foodies: Saffron is the secret ingredient in iconic dishes like Persian saffron rice, Spanish paella, and Indian biryani. Its subtle flavor transforms good food into unforgettable meals.
For Tea Lovers: Add a pinch of saffron to your tea, and you’ll never look at your afternoon brew the same way again. It’s calming, aromatic, and packed with antioxidants.
For Wellness Enthusiasts: Known for its mood-enhancing properties, saffron has been used for centuries to ease anxiety, improve memory, and even support heart health.
For Beauty Buffs: Saffron-infused serums and masks are all the rage for their natural glow-boosting properties. Your skin will thank you.
A Journey to the Fields of Persia
Let’s take a moment to appreciate where this spice comes from. Imagine standing in a saffron field in Iran during harvest season. The air smells faintly floral, and farmers carefully pick each flower by hand before the sun gets too hot. It’s an art that has been passed down for centuries—a tradition that creates the world’s finest saffron.
