Did the Achaemenids have throne names?
Tumblr media
When Ochus, the son of Artaxerxes I, ascended the throne in 424/423 BCE after defeating his brother, he adopted the name "Darius" (𐎭𐎠𐎼𐎹𐎺𐎢𐏁, Dārayavaʰuš). This provides the earliest evidence that Achaemenid kings assumed throne names, which might differ from their original names. These throne names served strong legitimizing purposes: Ochus, whose reign was contested, sought to convey his strength and right to rule by adopting the name of one of his most illustrious predecessors.
But were throne names assigned when a prince was designated as heir to the empire, as was the case in the Neo-Assyrian Empire? This remains uncertain. Additionally, did the practice of using throne names predate Darius II? This is possible, as several Greek sources—Herodotus and Strabo in particular—suggest that even the great Cyrus was not born with the name by which he is known.
Interestingly, some scholars argue that the name Cyrus (𐎤𐎢𐎽𐎢𐏁, Kūruš) is not of Indo-Iranian origin. Some suggest it might derive from Elamite, while Strabo (15.3.6) claims the name comes from a river flowing through Persis near Pasargadae. If Cyrus’s name was indeed non-Iranian, it could support the theory that "Cyrus" was a throne name, as it would make more sense if he were born with a distinct Iranian name. However, this remains a matter of debate.

Persis Karim - The Dawn is Too Far
I recently attended a film screening and lecture by Persis Karim, hosted by Penn’s Middle East Center. I was particularly excited for this event, not only because I am enrolled in two Persian courses this term, but also because Karim and I hail from similarly hyphenated identities. Karim is a Persian-American poet who comes from a mixed racial background. She writes primarily in English, and as she stated upon questioning, does not endeavor to write in Persian, for it would feel inauthentic. I deeply resonated with Karim’s relationship to Persian culture: it is one that is truly hers, and simultaneously, one toward which she may reach indefinitely. I felt those rhythms of her identity in the film she presented, The Dawn Is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life, which chronicles the lives of a Persian community in Berkeley, California. The film explored the possibility of “making home” in the diaspora, particularly when one’s native identity proves itself in initial tension with assumed lands. Many of the Persian-Americans interviewed were heavily involved politically, in both Iran and the United States. It was heartwarming to understand their resistance against repressive politics as a autochthonous embodiment of renewed Persian culture.
Notably, I was somewhat surprised by the representation of Persian-American political engagement in the film. I am rather used to the image, often presented in mainstream media, of a Persian diaspora simply disillusioned with Iran and infatuated with "Western" belonging. While I certainly expected that the political relationship there would be much more complex, I found the film’s deep exploration of each individual’s political ethos highly compelling.
Many, Karim included, seemed to displace the idea of a “fixed” Persian identity, instead understanding their past and present lives to merely flow. Of course, this is likewise a move entrenched in the politics of identity. What does it mean to allow your identity to exist beyond what may be expected via “tradition”? Don’t we all, in some way, exist beyond that grain? What is it that necessarily makes the diasporic identity feel fundamentally different, then? The film and discussion left me with many questions. I ultimately felt that, although Persian identity certainly has its particularities, many diasporic identities stand the chance to become “one”. That common ground, nearly devoid of tradition, is what makes existing in the diaspora a unique experience. We enter a new culture, together, wherein our languages mix with English and our landscapes with our new homes. Thus, Karim writes in her poetry,
“To root themselves in their new home Mother and Baba planted native trees: madrone, oak and the manzanita at the end of the drive. To remind them of their foreignness, they planted olive, almond, quince, pomegranate.”
I felt increasingly comfortable interrogating my strained relationship to "culture" after discussing Karim’s movie and poems with her at dinner afterward, too. The entire event proved a unique opportunity for intentional engagement with a strain of Persian culture rarely present in classroom spaces.

Persian Goftogu Thanksgiving
Over Thanksgiving break, my aunt and cousin from France visited my family. We spent the holiday with our family members, friends, and lots of food. During their time with us, I could speak to engage in goftogu with my aunt, and she was truly impressed by the progression from when I first started our class to now. During our conversation, we spoke about her travels from France to the United States, how the weather was in France, and how she was excited to see me. I responded by asking her how she was doing, how work was, and my mutual exactness that she was here spending time with me! Our conversation was a very meaningful experience because the last time I saw my aunt in June, I spoke no Farsi but only knew a few words and commands. She was truly impressed to see that I had dramatically improved by being able to fully read and write in just a few months. Accompanied by our conversation were tons of pictures, videos, and WhatsApp memes she always loves showing me. As well as Persian music, during our conservation, I told her we listened to the song Gentlemen by Sasy, and I was surprised to hear that she had heard the song and liked it! She told me one of her favorite songs is شب رویایی by آرون افشار, which we listened to, and she showed me some of her dancing skills. I enjoyed my break with my family and immersed myself in my Persian culture, and I have started to become a role model to my younger cousins, who want to learn Farsi because I am. I hope to keep our familial language strong within our family, and it starts with each speaking experience you have with a native speaker. I look forward to continuing to improve my Farsi and strengthening my connection to my heritage with every conversation I have.

But saffron isn’t just about its luxurious aroma or the gorgeous golden hue it adds to food it’s about how it makes you feel.
Here’s a fun fact: it takes around 75,000 saffron flowers to produce just one pound of saffron. That’s why it’s one of the world’s most precious commodities. And guess what? The finest saffron comes from Persia (modern-day Iran), where generations of farmers have perfected the art of cultivating this incredible spice.

The air smells faintly floral, and farmers carefully pick each flower by hand before the sun gets too hot. It’s an art that has been passed down for centuries—a tradition that creates the world’s finest saffron.
