"So ... John and Sherlock, they retired!" Lestrade's face was lit up with pride.

Sally Donovan eyed him askance.

"Yeah! Can you believe it?! Only 37 and 45 and they're retiring!" he whistled, smiling softly, a twinge of jealousy in his voice as he nudged her. "Never thought I'd see the day!"

"Neither did I ..." she looked at her screen again in disbelief. "What did you say they were doing now ... ?"

Lestrade didn't seem to notice the true query in her voice.

"Beekeepers!" Lestrade took a swig of his coffee, "in Sussex or some such ..."

"Beekeepers ... ?" Sally's face had gone pale. The printout from NSY just kept growing ...

"The pair of 'em! Beekeeping he said! ... Must be nice. The soft buzzing. The pretty flowers. Pulling honey from all those little boxes they keep 'em in-" Lestrade was still blustering on ...

"FUCK!"

Sally Donovan's curse cut him short, and he flinched as she swivelled the screen around to show him what she was seeing ...

"How the hell ... ?"

"Holy mother of God ..."

Lestrade dropped his coffee. Someone had included footage on the latest report.

"Sir ... that ... doesn't look like retirement."

Hornet headcanon!

'Hornet' is not Hornet's true name.

I'm still torn between different reasonings for her having the name either

A- It was given to her as an honorary title, by Queen Vespa, during her training within the hive (or bestowed upon her after having finished her training as a symbol of her accomplishments.)

Or B- She gave the name to herself, after the fall of the kingdom, as a way to separate her current self from her past while still honoring some part of her past. (The part that is easiest for her to look back on.)

As for her birth name my sisters and I have decided on Arachnè. (The name is from a Greek myth, where the protagonist Arachnè challenges Athena to a weaving contest, wins, and is afterwards transformed into a spider.)

You never think - a.k.a Mad Mammon

I was thinking this with Tears of Themis earlier, but now I'm thinking about Obey Me and-

Mammon. Mammon right? Mammon the moron who we love who would do ANYTHING for MC and who canonically got super upset when MC got hurt in the Levi Arc in Season 1 because he wasn't there to protect them.

And MC. Crazy ass MC who is the most reckless motherfucker there is and constantly gets involved with other people's business.

So I raise you this:

MC notices someone is in danger, and similar to the Beel and Luke v. Lucifer situation, steps in and gets seriously injured.

Mammon is by their hospital bed when they wake up. But he's not sad, or fretful, or scared, or over bearing, or happy.

He's furious — his tusndere "I don't know how I feel right now so I'm just going to be angry" ness is shining in it's full glory and he is fuming.

"What were you thinking?" he'd hiss, his eyes still downcast to the floor.

"Mammon-"

"No! No. Shut up, and listen for fucking once! You jumped between two feral demons who were in the midst of attacking their prey!"

"They were going to kill them-"

"WE'RE FUCKING DEMONS MC! Killing things is our jobs! But you! You're a human! A stupid, squishy, mortal, human that doesn't seem to have inherited any of the god damn self-preservation that your species is supposed to have! FUCK! Do you ever use that pretty little head of yours?! You could'a died, MC! HELL! You would've if I hadn't been lookin' for ya! What would you've done if I was too late, huh? I'll tell ya, what, nothin'! Because you'd be gutted, shredded, and skinned with nothing left of ya but a splatter of blood and few bones left in the halls. Is that what ya want? Huh?"

And yeah, he's harsh, and vicious, but he doesn't know how to process all the over flowing concern and terror running through that his human almost died a second time. He might regret saying some it later, but in that moment, he can't even fully process what he's saying.

The argument will leave with him storming out of the room to gather himself, only to collapse in the hallway in tears.

i'm a big fan of the headcanon that Vector adopted Charmy (in the i found this kid so i guess it's mine now? kind of way) when he was a really little bitty baby larva because it means Vector and Espio would've been there when Charmy pupated and. ough.

Worker bees take around 14 days to pupate irl but real-life bees don't live very long so. let's go with the idea that pupation in the sonic world takes about six-eight weeks (they've got a lot more complex organisms to develop). Also real bee larva stay in their cell in the beehive until after they pupate so I imagine that's like. equivalent to a baby incubator and Vector finding Charmy was like holy shit this is bad? I need a doctor right? Anyways they find a doctor and put larva-Charmy in an artificial incubator for a few weeks just to stabilize him, and Vector and Espio stop by to visit every day because they feel responsible and the nurses let them hold him for a little bit and he's so small he fits in one of Espio's hands. After he's stabilized enough the doctor says they can take him home, it's not usual for a larva to live outside of a cell but as long as they keep a close eye on him he should be fine, he promises.

Bee larva grow over a thousand times their size. And shed their skin(?) several times. And eat a lot. (Also they don't have eyeballs!). So now Vector and Espio have a fussy, constantly hungry, rapidly growing ugly little grub to watch over, because somehow not having legs yet is going to stop Charmy from wriggling out of the crib and nearly falling to the ground. Anyways back to the whole point, pupation is normally done by other bees sealing the cells with beeswax so when they figure Charmy is about to pupate they take him back to the doctor and put him back in the incubator until he makes a cocoon for himself a few days later and they're allowed to take him back home with strict instructions to be very careful, do not shake, avoid extreme temperatures etc etc. You probably won't notice a difference but if the cocoon starts looking misshapen or suddenly becomes a lot darker or lighter or it's been over eight weeks, call me. And they put pupa-Charmy in his crib (that has since been child-locked) with a heat lamp and temperature controls and Vector is a nervous wreck ("Espio does this look lumpy too you. Espio." "It always looks lumpy." "Espio I can see the cocoon getting darker." "The book says that's normal?" "Espio it's been eight weeks should we call the doctor??" "I...don't know.")

Charmy finally breaks out of the cocoon on the absolute last possible day, Vector hears the sound of soft crunching noises on the other side of the room and starts yelling for Espio to get down here quick it's happening and they both watch and Vector's like I should help him right and Espio's like Absolutely Not, just wait >_>. It takes fifteen minutes but it feels like hours and they're both unsure if Charmy will recognize them since he's technically never seen them before? right now he's equivalent to a 3-4 month old so he can't sit up yet but he can notice and look at faces which he does almost immediately, and they stare at each other for a long few seconds until Espio says "happy birthday" and Charmy smiles.

("We're adopting him right." "I thought we already did.")

(And then he started teething a week later.)

I am very excited to read more underline the blue (when it's updated no pressure!!) Especially since reading falling falling stars and realising that grumpy kind of dickish nate is the same character as underline the blue nate?? I'm SO intrigued to see where that goes

Underline the Blue probably won't update again on AO3 for another month or so, but there's 4 more chapters up on the Patreon. (We're rotating into Underline the Gold :D ) I will be writing more though!!!

But yeah!

A big part of Nate's dickish personality is a response to what he experienced as someone who deep down is a soft people pleaser who was terribly and horrifically abused. He had like this...very profound response - especially because he never got any therapy - where he hardened off his entire personality. In Falling Falling Stars it didn't help that Efnisien's PTSD was a trigger. And in Underline the Blue everything is more...raw and exaggerated because Nate is an omega.

But the mechanics are basically the same - Nate used to be a very soft person who just wanted to please people, was horrendously taken advantage of, and in the process of recovery, became kind of mean and cold. Janusz in FFS gets to see what Nate is really like behind closed doors, and also encourages a degree of this behaviour, because he's seen Nate broken, and he'd much rather see Nate bitchy, than see him broken.

And tbh, UtB Janusz feels exactly the same way.
