Shattered Glass Shatters Truth about Rogue Journalist
“There’s so many show-offs in journalism.” Well, yeah. But there’s also a lot of those in the film. And even though I don’t think Shattered Glass is a show-off of a movie, it does show off the skills of director (and writer) Billy Ray and many other people from both the cast and the production side.
Shattered Glass tells the true (although somewhat dramatized) story of Stephen Glass, a Journalist from the 1990s who was well respected at The New Republic Magazine, which was known as the “in-flight magazine for Air Force One” until he was caught fabricating stories as well as source material for those stories. The story follows Glass (portrayed by none other than Hayden Christensen) as he shows off his writing and then is ascertained as a fraud and then begins a spiral downward filled with lies, whining, and a lot of the same questions that are repeated way too many times throughout the film “ARE YOU MAD AT ME?”
The acting and casting of the film were surprisingly great. Christensen, who is widely known for portraying Anikin Skywalker in the Star Wars Franchise Prequels from 1999-2005, was the best candidate for this character. The high-pitched-ness of his voice, the weird thing where he breathes in between words and then almost lightly smacks his lips in between; agghhhh. Christensen is the best actor to play such an annoying and unlikable dude. The idea of Glass was that he was young, cute, and completely lovable.
Christensen was as young as he was, with his curly hair and glasses, which were just a little too big for his face. mwaa Chef's kiss. He embodies innocentness. There's a more common saying in the U.K. than here in the U.S., but it's too sweet to be savory. This is about those people you know are entirely fake people who are just unnerving to be around because of how outwardly nice their demeanor is, like Delorous Umbridge from the Harry Potter book and movie series. In this case, she and Glass are so lovely and sweet that it's almost suspicious, and I think Christensen just nailed that because of his history playing in Star Wars. Other significant roles, such as Chuck Lane (played by Peter Sarsgaard), were tremendous and demanding but not evil, as a boss should be. The almost father figure-like editor Michael Kelly (portrayed by Hank Azaria) and all of the leading ladies, Catlin Avey (Played by Chloë Sevigny), Andy Fox (portrayed by Rosario Dawson), and Amy Brand (played by Melanie Lynskey), all fit their characters' roles, purposes, and characteristics perfectly. The incredible casting of casting director Cassandra Kulukundis made the feature what it was. The film wouldn't have hit the way it does without each person being appropriately portrayed. The emotions evoked by each are crucial for the plot and for the audience to get the most out of it.
The physical production, design, art, set direction, and costuming were all on point. I think the most noticeable instance of this is in the 2 newsrooms that are shown; one from The New Republic and the other from Forbes. I have only ever been in two newsrooms at this point (primarily due to the amount of work and writing is online/electronic now), one for NJ.com and another for a media company I was interning at last year. After seeing those and then this in comparison, I have to say job well done to François Sénécal(Set Director), Pierre Perrault (Art Director), and François Séguin (Production Design). In addition to looking like a newsroom, the 90s setting was on point. There were landlines, pagers, and rolodexes. They had those giant PCs with square backs and were as heavy as hippos, even the phones. Hand-held landlines with antennas and the keyboards for the computers were those big old ones where the keys were so deep they made Marianna's Trench look like a pothole. Perfection. There were yellow pages, and the typing done on the computers had that ugly original font and that gross blue background. People were using YAHOO to search for things and AOL to email people. I cannot go on enough about it. Though I'm sure everyone working on the feature was around in the 90s, it may not be that big of a deal for them to remember. Still, for the audience, it really does transport you back to the 90s.
The music department also did their job well. The music is driving, curious, and just the thing that the film needed, but what really is impressive are the moments without any music. To make tense lines even more potent, Supervising Sound Director David Bach ensured there was nothing but dead silence behind the yelling and crying. “I think I’ll have to kill myself,” ‘What the hell did you do to Steve?” and “Stop fucking apologizing” are lines that are just left to stew in the anger and awkwardness that brought them to where they are. This also applies to more lighthearted moments, though. The amount of narration done by Christensen and the seemingly wise journalist advice he provides, such as “I think it’s the people you find. Their quirks, their flaws. What makes them funny, what makes them human. Journalism is just the art of capturing behavior. You have to know who you’re writing for, and you have to know what you’re good at. I record what people do. I find out what moves them, what scares them. And I write that down. That way, they’re the ones telling the story,” with the uplifting and motivational music behind it, are sheer golden words that stick with you.
Though biopics and other truer movies often don’t have themes like fictional ones, I think there are important lessons here. Lessons like doing the right thing are hard sometimes, or sometimes you need to look deeper, maybe not trusting everybody who has a smile on their face, are all valid points that are brought up in the film. And though the movie is way more dramatic than the actual life events that inspired it, those lessons that come through are ones that the audience and journalists should be aware of.
There aren’t a lot of issues I take with the film other than the possible rating issue and the gratingness of the whole thing. There is a lot of cursing, and as the resident pottymouth of my class, home, and friend group, I should know. I do think PG-13 is appropriate overall, but if you’re a parent or an older sibling or just an adult in charge of a youngling, maybe don’t take them to this if you’re not okay with them repeating the F-word all the way home. It’s not a perfect piece, but I think that’s okay. I think it’s a biopic, so the truth of it is supposed to shine through more than the art aspect. The cinematography could have been better, and sometimes I didn’t care about certain things happening at a particular moment, and after a while, the constant whining and repetition of annoying toddler-like quotes from Glass, such as “I didn’t do anything wrong” gets old and a little headache-inducing. But as the movie is only 94 minutes long, it’s not that big of a deal.
For those who like biopics, or journalistic stories such as Spotlight (2006), All the President’s Men (1975) and/or The Help (2015), this is definitely the movie for you.
“There’s so many show-offs in journalism.” There are also a lot of show-off movies. Shattered Glass shows off plenty of great aspects that audiences, especially those who were around in the 90s and remember this historical event, should see.

CANTLON: HARTFORD WOLF PACK DEFEAT BRIDGEPORT ISLANDERS
Tumblr media
HARTFORD WOLF PACK DEFEAT BRIDGEPORT ISLANDERS By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings BRIDGEPORT, CT - After a rough start, where they showed resiliency, the Hartford Wolf Pack defeated the Bridgeport Islanders in a 5-4 come-from-behind win in a closed-to-the-public opening pre-season game for both teams. The Islanders built a 3-0 lead in the game's first 15 minutes as Jimmy Lambert, the nephew of one-time Bridgeport Sound Tiger and New Haven Nighthawks player Lane Lambert - now the Head Coach of the parent New York Islanders - garnered a goal and two assists. Next, former UCONN star Ruslan Iskhakov popped in a goal and added an assist. Then, top-end prospect William Dufour scored from fellow Memorial Cup-winning teammate Vincent Sevigny, born in Hartford and the son of ex-Wolf Pack Pierre Sevigny. Wolf Pack goalie Olof Lindbom surrendered four goals on 12 shots before being relieved by Dylan Garand as planned halfway through the period. HARTFORD WOLF PACK COMEBACK BEGINS Patrick Khordorenko started the comeback with their first goal on the power play, tallying a rebound of Lauri Pajuniemi's shot that Ken Appleby initially stopped. Then, Tim Theocharidis, skating on a training camp Professional Try-Out (PTO) contract, made it 3-2 off a crazy bounce that came off the backboards. The Pack's Alex Whelan scored an opportunistic goal into an open cage on the side of the net front pass from rookie Ryder Korczak to even then score. The Islanders regained the lead on a game-rare five-on-five tally when Lambert scored off a Hartford miscue. Pajuniemi registered his second contest point on the power play early in the third period. He converted on a pass from another rookie, Louka Henault. Then defenseman Blake Hillman, on a PTO for the second straight year, was the hero scoring with 5:10 left in regulation. He whistled his shot past Henrik Tikkanen to give the Pack the 5-4 lead that would be the final score. The two teams battle Friday night at Trinity College in Hartford at 6 PM. NOTES: The New York Rangers will likely make their final roster moves mid-week, and in turn, the Wolf Pack will send several down to their ECHL affiliates, the Jacksonville Icemen, for their training camp, which starts next week. The Pack received Swedish center Gustav Rydahl yesterday. He played last year for Färjestad BK (Sweden-SHL), where he registered 30 points in 44 games and earned one assist in four pre-season games with New York. Late yesterday, last season's captain, Jonny Brodzinski, was sent to the Wolf Pack, but he must first clear waivers. Other ex-Pack who were late NHL cuts on the waiver wire before heading to their AHL destinations include two to the Providence Bruins, Vinni Lettieri, and Keith Kinkaid. In addition, Jayson Megna was sent from the Colorado Avalanche to the Colorado Eagles, and Lias Andersson headed to the Ontario Reign from the Los Angeles Kings. BRIDGEPORT ISLANDERS SIGN FIVE The Bridgeport Islanders have been active this week as the parent club sent them five players - Andy Andreoff, Cole Bardreau, Dennis Cholowski,  Arnaud Durandeau, and Parker Wotherspoon. His brother Tyler was sent down by the New Jersey Devils to the Utica Comets. All cleared waivers and were assigned to Bridgeport. They also signed two more players to one-year contracts, defenseman Mike Cornell and ex-Pack and Springfield, MA, area resident Paul Thompson. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

Cartier Unveils Jewels of Great ‘Magnitude’
Tumblr media Tumblr media

In an exhibition space at the 180 The Strand building in central London last week, Cartier unveiled Magnitude, its latest high jewelry collection. Rich in color and contrasts, the collection centered around unique pairings of precious and semi-precious gemstones that together assert the force of the storied jeweler’s inventive design and creativity, and the “disruptive” presentation style that Cartier’s audience knows well.
The gloom of the rain-beaten June day failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the small army of red-jacketed Cartier “bellboys,” who, armed with umbrellas, welcomed Cartier’s clients and international media to the exclusive show, held in the city’s Temple district. The imposing concrete edifice is one of the city’s more famous examples of Brutalist architecture and a home to gallery spaces, offices, and studios for London’s creatives. “The venue was chosen to break up with classic and conventional locations,” explained a spokesperson for Cartier.
The collection brings to light the natural beauty of semi-precious stones—which Cartier labels “ornamental”—such as rutilated quartz, opal, and lapis lazuli. As a group, they create a striking, talismanic effect when paired with their precious stone counterparts—like emeralds, colored diamonds, rubies, and sapphires—and punctuated with touches of onyx or encased in rock crystal.

Though Magnitude opened with 69 pieces in London, the collection will likely extend to 120 pieces when the show travels to Paris during Couture Week in July and to New York in November.
“This collection echoes a collision of materials and is an example of Cartier’s ability to continuously reinvent itself while staying true to its timeless style,” said Pierre Rainero, the jeweler’s director of image, style, and heritage, who was onsite to present the collection. “The term ‘magnitude’ is defined as the great size or extent of something; the degree of brightness of a star; or, in geology, the force of the movement of the earth. Cartier has used ornamental stones since the early 20th century in its decorative objects.”
At the height of the Art Deco period, Cartier created remarkable clocks and bowls using a panoply of precious and semi-precious stones. The latter, which bear traces of the earth in their irregular coloring and natural veins, later provided the French house with a rich palette of inherently unique materials to work with for its jewelry.
“At Cartier, stones are part of a greater vocabulary that is not limited to just ornamental or precious,” Rainero said.  “We transcend that nomenclature by combining them in our designs.”

As such, Magnitude itself is more about continuity than disruption. Though little is new about conjugating precious and ornamental stones, this collection revives Cartier’s penchant for creating striking color pairings in what is widely known as “the Cartier style”—famously exemplified by the Tutti Frutti collection of the 1930s. At a time when monochromatic Art Deco jewelry was popular, Cartier was setting sapphires against emeralds, then a rarely-seen combination. It successfully translated Indian Maharajahs’ taste for uncommon color combinations into pieces that Western clients wanted to wear.
Still, what is notably new in Magnitude is Cartier’s reference to kinetic art, particularly its emphasis on the play of light against moving objects. This is evidenced, for example, in the unusual carved rock crystal settings used in the Theia necklace, crafted to showcase the brilliance of Colombian emeralds.
“The contrast of colors, the geometry, and the use of transparency in this piece all borrow from the codes of kinetic art, which inspired us to explore new ways of playing with light,” Rainero said.
Other pieces in the collection, while stunning, are less directly art-inspired, even if their color palette do seem painterly. The Équinoxe necklace sets a yellow Ceylon sapphire against large beads of lapis lazuli on a lacy bed of yellow-hued diamonds. The Aphélie necklace, with its central rutilated quartz, is laden with inclusions, creating a natural, earth-tone landscape that is enhanced by other surrounding stones, from white and colored diamonds to morganite beads, coral, and onyx.

Magnitude’s main strengths are its natural beauty and the chromatic range that its natural variants add to Cartier’s designs. Interestingly, that same aesthetic was explored by the French artist Jean-Michel Alberola in a painting titled La Précision des Contraires, which was commissioned in 2018 by the Fondation Cartier art center. This is not entirely a coincidence. “Alberola’s piece brings together the irregular edges and patterns of rough stones with the perfectly polished facets of cut stones in order to question the notion of beauty derived from nature versus culture,” according to a Cartier spokesperson. “[It’s] a question that is also eternally present in the mind of Cartier’s craftsmen.”
As Cartier had done this last April with its show-stopping gala dinner in Paris that followed the launch of its Clash daywear collection, the presentation of Magnitude ended with a festive soirée at the Shoreditch Town Hall. Hosted by Cyrille Vigneron, president and chief executive of Cartier International, the dinner was attended by such celebrity guests as Claire Foy, Lily Collins, and Bianca Brandolini, while DJs Paul Sevigny and Mimi Xu, together with the singer Beth Ditto, handled the musical entertainment.
On loan from the Fondation Cartier, Alberola’s work is currently on display in the Cartier boutique at 175-177 New Bond Street in Mayfair. While high jewelry collections are rarely shown to a wide audience, Magnitude will be open to the public through June 30.

Closing the Gap
By Vincent J. Curtis
Operation Tractable kinda-sorta ended on Aug 16th, 1944, with the capture of Falaise by 2nd Div. But the gap wasn’t closed.
On the 16th, the 4th Div and the 1st Polish Armoured Division were ordered to take Trun and link up with the American 3rd Army at Chambois. The 1st Polish outflanked the German defenses and, dividing itself into three battle groups, sent one to Chambois, one to Hill 262 (Mont Ormel), and another to the south of Trun, easing the its capture on the 18th by 4th Div.
The gap, about four miles wide and through which the German 7th Army had to pass, was spanned by the Dives River. The Dives formed an impassable barrier to vehicular traffic except at two points, Moissy and St. Lambert-sur-Dives. The hamlet of Moissy had a ford, led to by a single lane dirt track; next to it was a narrow foot bridge.
St. Lambert, a village of 150 souls, had a two-lane bridge that was strong enough to support a Panther tank. The gap area was flat, wide-open, and easily observed from the heights around Trun, ideal killing ground for artillery and Typhoons.
Capturing Trun, the 4th Div was nearly spent, but did send a battle group forward to seize St. Lambert. The battle group comprised B and C Coys of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, about fifty men each, and C Squadron of the South Alberta Regiment, the armoured recce unit of 4th Div. In overall command was Major David Currie of the SAR. The task of Currie Force was to stop the passage of 100,000 Germans.
Backstopping the Dives position, three miles to the east were two Polish battlegroups on Hill 262. They had with them Capt Pierre Sevigny an artillery FOO for the 58th Bty, 4th Medium Regiment. After crossing the Dives, escaping Germans had to pass around Hill 262, and the Poles scourged them with tank and small arms fire as well as Sevigny’s artillery fire. Over the 36 hours from the 20th to 21st August, Capt Sevigny was to win Poland’s highest military decoration, the Virtuti Militari. His work inflicted thousands of casualties on the Germans and enabled the Poles to hold out against German attacks trying to re-open the gap. Four depleted SS Panzer divisions east of the Dives repeatedly attacked the Poles, who fought them until they ran out of ammunition – and then fought them hand-to-hand.
Currie Force approached St. Lambert at dusk on the 19th - and was repulsed with the loss of two of its fifteen Shermans. Pulling back 1,000 yards, Currie used the night to personally recce the defenses. Attacking again at dawn, Currie Force gained half the village by noon, forming another gauntlet escaping Germans had to pass. Currie Force repulsed repeated counterattacks, and near dusk surged ahead to capture the rest of the village.
As the battle progressed, columns of death began to sprout from the choke points. The corpses of men, horses (Wehrmacht transport was still largely horse-drawn) wrecked vehicles, artillery pieces, trucks and tanks were piling up along the roads, choking passage even more.
Discipline in the Wehrmacht began to crack. Prisoners were being taken first by the dozen, then fifty and then a hundred at a time. Pte E.H. McAllister of the Argylls was credited with capturing 160 men. The famous picture of David Currie winning his VC shows a German officer surrendering to Argyll George Mitchell, CSM of C Coy, with Pte John Evans off to the right. (A moment after the picture was taken, Mitchell buttstroked the Officer for looking arrogant.)
Before noon on the 21st, 4th Div pushed ahead from Trun, with the Canadian Grenadier Guards relieving the Poles. Over 50,000 were trapped, and the German 7th Army surrendered, Paris was liberated three days later.
For several feats of personal military prowess, his skillful and determined attacks and defense, and for demonstrating an epic coolness under fire for 36 hours, Major David Vivian Currie was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Do you know the Top 10 Times Actors Actually “Did It” On Screen? Sex scenes can be really awkward for actors. There is one school of thought that actors simply can’t authentically simulate a sex scene. But what’s the alternative? If the script calls for a sex scene and you can’t fake it, what should you do? Well, here are the Top 10 Times Actors Actually “Did It” On Screen. We're pretty sure it's not acting if you actually do it. These actors in this list video literally went all the way when filming their sex scenes. We count down another top 10 actors who actually did it on screen. These actors legitimately performed sexual acts on screen for the sake of cinema! Who will take the top spot on our list? An actor’s primary job is to convince audiences that everything they see on screen is authentic and real. A good actor does not pretend to be a character going through scripted actions, they become the person and exist naturally. When it comes to steamy scenes the question of reality and simulation may cause the viewer to ask, “Are they really doing it?” Please comment #Actors #ActorsDidIt #DidIt if you seen any of these movies. CANTLON'S CORNER: (FRI) PACK PACKING TWO INTO WEEKEND
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Another weekend of hockey is set to begin and the last of the two-pack of games in the dreaded three-in-three starts next weekend. For Pack Head Coach, Kris Knoblauch, everyone is itching to have some game time after a week of practice. “It has been a good week of practice, but we're ready for game action. Its been a jump coming over from the NHL where you don’t get as much practice time as we do here, and we don’t get bored at practice. Being in the American (Hockey) League you can have a long week like this. It's more of a weekend league so guys are ready to get back at it. Guys were left with a sour taste in their mouths in how last weekend ended.” Knoblauch has had to dust off some old prep books for this type of schedule. “I was just an assistant in the NHL, so I have had to go back to my junior books where the schedule is very similar to this and getting myself prepared." On Friday against Springfield (7:15 pm) expect to see some changing of line combinations and defensive pairings. “We’ve made some changes and who knows, by the end of the first period if it doesn’t work, we'll change them back again,” remarked Knoblauch. "It's so early in the season, from me getting used to them, and the players getting used to me. They have to get used to each other and our systems. We're trying to figure who works well with who, and that becomes beneficial for everybody and we'll see how these switches work.” Clearly down the middle is going to change. “We're switching (Danny) O’Regan to center, from wing and away from the wall. That's one of the changes.” Boo Nieves and Matt Beleskey might have new skating partners based on Thursday’s practice, but nothing as far as who they will be is set in stone. “We're still working all of that out this afternoon. We're still working on minutes and everybody wants 20 minutes, but we don’t play 120 or 190-minute games, just 60 minutes. We haven’t quite yet decided on our combos (defense or offense). On defense with (Nick) Ebert here, we have an extra right-handed shooting defenseman. It’s a luxury yes, but by the same token, you're gonna have to scratch one right-handed guy. If your three best defensemen are right-handed, then someone has to play on their off-side, so that can take away from a players' game and can make other (game) situations more difficult. That right-handed defenseman has to be playing much better than the left-handed defenseman you're taking out of the lineup. So we have some decisions to make." Sending Jeff Taylor, a left-hander, to Maine was in his best interest. “You have so many slots and everybody needs to play, so he will get a lot of minutes there. It's not easy. We have sent a lot of quality players there and we have had to scratch guys here who don’t deserve to come out (of the lineup), and its because they didn’t do enough to stay in and we have several high-quality guys here.” One change that looks likely is Ryan Lindgren will be skating with another right-handed shot, Darren Raddysh, rather than Jeff LoVerde. One thing that will stay the same is the goalie rotation. Igor Shesterkin will lead off in goal with Adam Huska likely to play Saturday in Binghamton in their first road game of the regular season. Down the line,1 as the schedule picks up, that will likely change as it will for forwards and defensemen. “As the season goes on, inevitably one will be playing better than the other and will play more. However, we are so pleased with both of them they have played very well for us, Callups, injuries and play will see that change as we head to December." The schedule, heavy on home games, is something the players want to take advantage of now. “It’s nice to have these first five games at home and not to have to travel as much and we're getting a lot of practice time as well," Wolf Pack assistant captain, Ryan Lindgren, said. “We have to play well at home when we're here. Binghamton, as our first road game, is a good test. That's a tough barn to play in. We had a tough time last year winning at home, so far we are off to a good start this year. We want to keep that going and look forward to playing (tonight).” NOTES: There is one roster change that will be permanent as LW Ryan Gropp has been suspended by the New York Rangers for failing to report to Maine along with Jeff Taylor. He scored just 26 goals in 121 career games. His last game was on Sunday, his only game this season. In it, he had no shots on goal and took a bad cross-checking penalty. Gropp was sent down early in training camp, a clear sign he was not on the A-List for Ranger prospects entering the last year of his entry-level deal. Now, Gropp is likely to be put on unconditional waivers for the purpose of ending his contract, as has been done in the past. That will make him a free agent eligible to sign anywhere in the AHL, ECHL or Europe. Defenseman Yegor Rykov (Ree-kov) is still at least another week away from being activated for play. Ex-Pack, Ryan Sproul, signed with Kunlun (China-KHL). Alexandre Grenier has gone from Laval to Iserlohn (Germany-DEL). That makes 75 AHL’ers from last season to sign in Europe or Asia and 28 of 31 AHL teams to have lost at least one player. Ex-Pack, Brian Gibbons (Salisbury Prep), was returned to Charlotte by Carolina. Ex-Sound Tiger, Steve Olesky, who was released from a try-out by Wilkes Barre/Scranton, signs with Toledo (ECHL). Ex-Pack/CT Whale, Kris Newbury, is playing Canadian senior league hockey this year with the Hamilton Steelhawks in the Allan Cup Hockey-Ontario (ACHO). Sons of Wolf Pack players who are competing in many different levels of hockey have some new playing addresses as the new hockey season has gotten underway. Their father is listed in parentheses. Dawson Armstrong (Derek) is with the Utah Outliers (WSHL). Tyler Savard (Marc) is with Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds (NOJHL). Anton Sundin (Ronnie) inks with Vastervas IK (Sweden-Allsvenskan) while Zachary Karpa (David) in the USNDTP (USHL). His brother, Jakob, puts a name on a contract with Victory (MI) Honda U-18 (TIEHL). Jack Finley (Jeff) goes to the Spokane Chiefs (WHL) and brother Mason with Okanagan (BCMML). Mathieu Sevigny (Pierre) goes to the Gatineau Olympics (QMJHL) and is playing with another son of Wolf Pack Braedan Virtue (Terry). Jaxson Stauber (Robb) goes to Minnesota State-Mankato (NCHC) while Kirill Ulyanov (Igor) signs with the Shreveport (LA) Mudbugs (NAHL) and Chippewa (WI) Steel (NAHL). Brock Beukeboom (Jeff) is playing with the Odense Bulldogs (Denmark-DHL) and his second cousin, Adam, is with HK Vojvodina (Serbia). Ex-Pack Donald Brashear has fallen on hard times. He was spotted working at a Tim Horton’s in Quebec City. While he was born in Indiana, he grew up in Val-Belair, a suburb of Quebec City. It was another ex-Pack who has lent him a hand. Pierre Sevigny, who played in Hartford in Year One of the Wolf Pack, he had his eldest son born in Hartford. Sevigny is presently not involved in hockey, he was an assistant for Quebec Remparts (QMJHL) a few years ago. and owns the franchise. Sevigny’s two boys are playing hockey. His younger son, the aforementioned Vincent, and his oldest son Mathieu is with HC Cholet (France Division-2). Read about it HERE The UCONN Huskies (0-2-1 overall) look to get into the win column Friday on the road at RPI (ECACHL) in Troy, NY, their only game of the weekend before they start to play some Hockey East opponents (Merrimack) next weekend at the XL Center. Some of my top fave stories
The Courtesan of Lucknow
Novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa, 1905.
Life Story of a Woman who gets abducted a child as an act of revenge, and sold to a brothel, where she moves on to become a famous courtesan, due to her outstanding intellect, personality and taste.
Time of the Gypsies
Film by Emir Kusturica, 1988.
Le Dernier Chant des Malaterre
Graphic Novel by Francois Bourgeon.
The Pillow Boy of the Lady Onogoro
Novel by Alice Fell.
Quote from Goodreads:
“This “exquisite, exuberant, X-rated” novel (Mirabella), set in feudal Japan, tells the story of a concubine who hires a stable boy to whisper erotic stories from behind a screen while she entertains her master, a samurai general.”
Even if the basic premise of this book doesn’t really work, I still love it so much that I had to include it here.
Definitely in the soulfood department.
Dangerous Liaisons
Les Liaisons dangereuses is a French epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, first published in four volumes by Durand Neveu from March 23, 1782.
It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to socially control and exploit others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. It has been claimed to depict the decadence of the French aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution, thereby exposing the perversions of the so-called Ancien Régime. However, it has also been described as an amoral story.
As an epistolary novel, the book is composed entirely of letters written by the various characters to each other. In particular, the letters between Valmont and the Marquise drive the plot, with those of their victims and other characters serving as contrasting figures to give the story its depth.
The Wire
TV series, 2002 - 2008, on black street gangs in Baltimore, cross cut with some police procedural of the cops pursuing them.
May be about to reach its shelf life for being too famous to need introduction.
Les Valseuses
Quoted from Wikipedia, since I am too lazy to write up my own description:
Going Places is a 1974 French erotic comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Bertrand Blier, and based on his own novel. Its original title is Les Valseuses, which translates into English as "the waltzers"[citation needed], a vulgar French slang term for "the testicles".[2] It stars Miou-Miou, Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere.
It is widely considered one of the most controversial movies in French cinema history due to its vulgarity, depiction of sexual acts, nudity, and moral ambiguity; however, Blier's later acclaim for the rest of his filmography made it a cult film for modern critics.
Jean-Claude and Pierrot are young men who travel around France, committing petty crimes and running from the law. After they get in trouble with a hairdresser in Valence for stealing his car, they grab his pistol and kidnap his assistant Marie-Ange, an apathetic girl. When they are bored with unorgasmic Marie-Ange, they decide to find a passionate woman and meet Jeanne Pirolle, a woman in her forties who is just released from prison and had spent ten years in a cell. After a threesome, Jeanne commits suicide and the men return to Marie-Ange. They find Jeanne's son Jacques who had been incarcerated as well. Then, the four consider founding a crime family but at their first crime, an attempted robbery, Jacques commits a revenge killing and the others flee. While on the run, they meet a family having a picnic near Col d'Izoard and the delinquent teenage daughter Jacqueline wants to join them. They take Jacqueline and on learning that she is still a virgin, they decide to deflower her. After dropping Jacqueline, the three ride away aimlessly.
Breaking Bad
Too famous to need introduction for the next 10 years or so.
Der Seewolf
One of the classic 4 part adventure series, that would traditionally be broadcast in Germany around Christmas time. First broadcast in 1971, and then literally for decades after that.
Based on a number of different Jack London novels and short stories, that originally had no connection with each other.
Story of a young man from a well off family, who gets shiprecked, and then taken on board by a whaler ship, ruled by a ruthless, self made captain, who refuses to get him to land, and kind of treats him at his whim, sometimes tormenting him, sometimes using him to have conversations with.
Spirited Away
Too famous to need introduction for the next 10 years or so.
Lolita
Too famous to need introduction for the next 100 years or so, but, just in case:
1955 novel by Vladimir Nabokov
Quoted from Wikipedia:
The novel is notable for its controversial subject: the protagonist and unreliable narrator, a middle-aged literature professor under the pseudonym Humbert Humbert is obsessed with a 12-year-old girl, Dolores Haze, with whom he becomes sexually involved after he becomes her stepfather.
Bad Company
Quoted from Wikipedia, since I am too lazy to write up my own description:
″1972 American Western film directed by Robert Benton, who also co-wrote the film with David Newman. It stars Barry Brown and Jeff Bridges as two of a group of young men who flee the draft during the American Civil War to seek their fortune and freedom on the unforgiving American frontier.[1]
This acid western attempts in many ways to demythologize the American West in its portrayal of young men forced by circumstance and drawn by romanticized accounts to forge new lives for themselves on the wrong side of the law. Their initial eagerness to be outlaws soon abates, however, when the boys are confronted with the realities of preying on others in a nation ravaged by war and exploitation.”
Pinocchio
German language children’s tv series, animated in Japan, first broadcast in 1976, and then contiuously broadcast for many years after, due to its huge popularity.
Based on the original Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, while introducing considerable changes.
For some reason or other, I only ever watched this when I was already in my 20s. Still loved it.
Riget
TV series by Lars von Trier.
Kind of his version of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”, if you will.
Set in a hospital, and combining elements of atmospheric eerie / spooky story, comedy, and soap opera.
The Kingdom (Danish title: Riget) is an eight-episode Danish television mini-series, created by Lars von Trier in 1994, and co-directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred.
The series is set in the neurosurgical ward of Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet, the city and country's main hospital, nicknamed "Riget". "Riget" means "the realm" or "the kingdom", and leads one to think of "dødsriget", the realm of the dead. The show follows a number of characters, both staff and patients, as they encounter bizarre phenomena, both human and supernatural. The show is notable for its wry humor, its muted sepia colour scheme, and the appearance of a chorus of dishwashers with Down Syndrome who discuss in intimate detail the strange occurrences in the hospital.
Cowboy Bebop
Probably too famous to need introduction for the next 10 years or so; but just in case:
1998 Japanese anime television series featuring a production team led by director Shinichirō Watanabe, screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane, and composer Yoko Kanno. The twenty-six episodes ("sessions") of the series are set in the year 2071, and follow the lives of a bounty hunter crew traveling on their spaceship called Bebop.
Histoire de ma vie
Giacomo Casnova’s Memoirs
Too famous to need introduction for the next 100 years or so.
One of my go to books, when I am seeking distraction. Just arbitrarily opening any of the volumes on any page will almost certainly lead to someting entertaining. Well, most of the time.
Tendres Cousins
Film by David Hamilton
Atmospheric film about those long summer days. The one example that I can think of, where I find the portrait of family life --- well actually more mother and her sister, with the father only visiting once --- enjoyable to watch.
Sort of a “The perfect bourgois childhood” soulfood kind film. (With a fair bit of erotic slapstic thrown in, but oh well.)
Kids
Quoted from Wikipedia:
Kids is a 1995 American independent coming-of-age film written by Harmony Korine and directed by Larry Clark.[4] It stars Chloë Sevigny, Leo Fitzpatrick, Justin Pierce, Rosario Dawson, and Jon Abrahams, all in their film debuts. Kids is centered on a day in the life of a group of teenagers in New York City and their hedonistic behavior towards sex and substance abuse (alcohol and other street drugs) during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the mid-1990s. The film generated a massive controversy upon its release in 1995, and caused much public debate over its artistic merit, even receiving an NC-17 rating from the MPAA

Shameless (UK), the first 5 seasons
Vikings (2013 tv series)
Rome
2005 tv series
The series primarily chronicles the lives and deeds of the rich, powerful, and historically significant, but also focuses on the lives, fortunes, families, and acquaintances of two common men: Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, fictionalized versions of a pair of Roman soldiers mentioned in Caesar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico.[1] The fictional Vorenus and Pullo manage to witness and often influence many of the historical events presented in the series, although some license is taken.
The first season depicts Julius Caesar's civil war of 49 BC against the traditionalist conservative faction in the Roman Senate (the Optimates), his rise to dictatorship over Rome, and his fall, spanning the time from the end of his Gallic Wars (52 BC or 701 ab urbe condita) until his assassination on 15 March 44 BC (the infamous Ides of March). Against the backdrop of these cataclysmic events, we also see the early years of the young Octavian, who is destined to become Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome. The second season chronicles the power struggle between Octavian and Mark Antony following Caesar's assassination, spanning the period from Caesar's death in 44 BC to the suicide of Antony and Cleopatra in 30 B.C. after their defeat at the Battle of Actium.
Les Innommables
5 volume graphic novel series by Conrad and Yann
Les Innommables ("The Unnameables") is a Franco-Belgian comic series written by Yann le Pennetier and drawn by Didier Conrad. It began publication in serialized form in 1980 in Spirou magazine and was eventually published in album form by Dargaud.[1]
The series recounts the adventures of three U.S. Army deserters – Mac, Tony and Tim – in 1949, as they trek across Asia and search for Alix, who is Mac's lover and a Chinese communist spy. Les Innommables is characterized by its black humor as well as frequent displays of nudity and violence – which eventually ended the series' run in Spirou.

Johnny Mad Dog
2008 French/Liberian war film directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire and based on the novel Johnny Chien Méchant (2002) by the Congolese author Emmanuel Dongala.
The teenage rebel Johnny Mad Dog leads the small group of younger boys commanded by the older General Never Die, who feeds them cocaine.[1] The film follows the group's march towards the capital Monrovia, and follows them in a gritty realistic manner as they move through a series of towns and villages, where they terrify and often execute the population. The soldiers are depicted as almost feral, committing acts of pillage and rape, with scant regard for even their own lives. They wear a variety of outlandish outfits – including butterfly wings and a wedding dress – and have nicknames such as No Good Advice, Captain Dust to Dust, and Chicken Hair.
_____
There are almost certainly quite a few more, that I can’t think of right now. I might update the list, if I should remember a super important one.
(Although there is a limit for how long such a list can be, and still be of use.)
I left out most of the light stuff that I love to watch, and tried to only include stuff that kind of works as inspiration for what I would write about myself.
I enjoy rewatching scenes from The Wire, Rome, The Soparnos and Game of Thrones on youtube, typically many many times over. In the very unlikely case I should ever take part of creating a tv series, it would definitely have to be one that produces scenes that people get addicted to rewatching.

OSCAR Verleihung – Wiege desVintage Booms
http://gty.im/820896
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Frage nicht, was man heute dafür hinblättern müßte.
Vintage sammeln – doch was ist wirklich kostbar?
