YouTube's scummy practice of removing swear words from closed captions and why we shouldn't accept it

I don't usually call YouTube out on this blog but this is just disgusting and unacceptable.

YouTube is removing swear words from auto-generated closed captions instead of censoring them or even including them.

This annoys me because A) it's insulting to deaf people who obviously depend on subtitles while watching videos on YouTube, and B) the removal of Community Captions in September 2020 makes this even worse because you can't add captions to other people's videos anymore, that is, captions that are actually accurate and include swear words instead of removing them.

Almost nobody has been calling YouTube out for this bullshit, and that just infuriates me. The fact that YouTube prioritises age-restricting videos that have the word "fuck" in their titles over inclusive design just shows how little they care about accessibility.

We need to start calling YouTube out for being assholes to deaf people, because it's a scummy and immoral practice to remove swear words from subtitles.

Translator's note: This song is virtually impossible to properly translate because it's one long visual pun. And it's all based on a linguistic concept that barely exists in English (the closest I can think of are prefixes and suffixes). So there are two translation options: one that translates the song with its intention, possibly sacrificing accuracy in the process and one that translates the song as is. I'll put them in respective order under the cut!

Notes:

[1] - The way the words are broken in both translations (where relevant) also matches how they're split in the video. This is most relevant in アかイかウ選ぶ, where ウ is a result of cutting 角 to look like it, but not resulting in any recognisable kanji. I tried to reflect this by omitting some letters in the word that 角 would have been translated to.

[2] - That's not 水, but the radical highlighted in the video for '三' is 氵, which is a radical that means 'water', hence the translation.

Actually, that reminded me of the other cracky fix-it I came up with. Sarah Livsey gets a broken Shard; instead of conflict drive, it has a conflict resolution drive. However, Sarah/Lisa is even more of a little shit here than in canon, for Mentally Ill Reasons, so once she escapes her parents she sets up as an independent villain(?) aiming to verbally destroy the lives and psyches of every powerful parahuman in the Bay.

(You want to see what driving someone to suicide really looks like? Fine! I'll fucking show you!)

However, "powerful parahumans" means a lot more villains than heroes. Her first target is Bakuda, and it goes something like 0:35 to 1:26 of this:

(except Lisa is genuinely trying to insult Bakuda.)

It turns into one of those [Character] Gives Everyone Therapy fix-its, except Lisa is completely furious that her villainous rampage keeps accidentally making parahumans' lives better. At least until her own mental stability improves, thanks in part to the capes she's accidentally befriended.

And, much as my Lisa has Mentally Ill Motives, this helped me hit on my favourite way to characterise her in humour fics: "It's a beautiful day in Brockton Bay, and you are a horrible Thinker".

Something I just noticed while I was drafting up my double indemnity post - he smiles for a moment in the EN version of "Ratio, you wretch", while in CN, there is no smile at all

I got all the audio files for ac6 (thankfully someone else already ripped them so all I had to do was convert them to wav)

Small issue. ~800 files with names that are all random numbers. I did find a program that will rename them to something more understandable, if that data is present, which it might not be. Instead of being random numbers it might have actual words.

Im goin to sleep so I’ll check tomorrow. Hopefully it works. If not I have to listen to all the files to get Rusty’s lines since really he’s the only one I’d put the effort in for lol

Since it’s not just getting the files it’s putting them in order too. I am doing a new game + play though so I will try to use my brain cells and remember to write down the order of things.
