i think about gillion tidestrider an unhealthy amount. i just experienced the “my final sin; i hate you” monologue for the first time last night and let me tell you i have some WORDS

(i’m using this ask as an excuse to ramble about gill because i’m usually a jay main but i adore all of albatrio so much and gillion is just AUUGH)

obligatory no spoilers pls as i’m on episode 80,, so also like. spoiler warnings!!

the more we learn about the past the more it just fucking stings, and you can so clearly see the way it’s shaped his friendships on the overseas. he was forced into the box of something incredibly demanding, ie the chosen one, at such a young age. it practically seems to be to the point where he wasn’t even allowed to think for himself.

i honestly think a lot of his journey with the albatrio has been healing in the sense that he feels like he’s able to be the thing for chip and jay that he never had growing up.

despite his hardships with chip, he always encouraged him to be a better person, he made him a better person, but every time along the way he assured him that he was always good to begin with. he let him know he was enough at every step of the way, and he regarded him highly even from the very beginning, like how he put so much significance into that battle in episode 15.

no one ever told gillion he was enough. that he was good. they only ever told him to be more.

in the block, he allowed jay to shoot him, and he went down to (what he thought was) certain death with a smile on his face. he begged her to just tell him what it was he had to fight for, because he would fucking fight for it because she was jay. he supported her freedom to choose her path in life. and after it was revealed that she betrayed them he still trusted her. he let her move on after she fucked up.

nobody supported his freedom. nobody let him choose. nobody let him move on from his mistakes.

nobody fought for him.

AND THE IMPACT HE’S HAD ON THEM IN RETURN?? IS CRAZY. OHHH MY GOD DONT GET ME STARTED.

JAY BEING IN THE MIDDLE OF COMBAT WHEN THE DOCTOR BRINGS UP GILLION AND HIS ABSENCE. AND SHE SAYS “IF HE WAS HERE YOU WOULD ALREADY BE DEAD.” HELLO THATS SO FUCKING METAL.

Last year I listened to a worldbuilding podcast that was very queercore hopepunk (2/3 of the hosts were straight...) and I have kind of come to detest the ideology, as well as all these nitty little microgenres. the podcast itself was not bad per say, but it was so utterly bland and the kind of writing advice that almost seems to discourage people from making challenging or transgressive art via prioritization of escapism as the ultimate goal for a fantasy work + the repeated adage that "realism is no excuse". You can set out to make a cozy, fluffy, fantasy world where people never behave in evil ways, are ever selfish or cruel, and never fight over resources and ideology, but if your love for human beings is conditional on human behavior only ever being perfect and good all the time then idk if you actually have much love for human beings at all. it's the kind of advice that encourages easily digestible fluff over all, and if you actually internalize it your never going to get out of it the power to write something like The Dispossessed, Left Hand of Darkness, or Parable of the Sower. is all.

Eddie chose their bachelor party outfits

Buck explains that it was an 80’s themed party and that he was dressed as Crocket and Eddie as Tubbs, then Eddie corrects him and says HE is Crockett and Buck is Tubbs.

We all know Buck’s pop culture knowledge is lacking and the fact that he got their character names mixed up and Eddie corrects him tells me that Eddie chose them. Why is this interesting?

Because Crocket and Tubbs are the guys from Miami Vice. If you don’t know it we’ll forgive you since it aired from 1984 – 1989, before a lot of you were probably born or old enough to be watching it. Before either Buck or Eddie were born too, by the way (and Christ don’t I feel old since I was in high school when it ended).

So, Eddie choosing to go as Sonny Crockett is FASCINATING to me. Quoting heavily from this article:

“Sonny struggles with depression, gets attached easily and just as easily hurt and makes dad jokes. Sonny is prickly, vulnerable, and deeply sad. I would also argue that he’s pretty heavily queercoded, and I don’t think it’s entirely unintentional.”

Sound somewhat familiar at all?

Interestingly, the penultimate episode of season 1 is titled Evan. Why is that interesting, you ask? As this article says, “Oh, you know, it’s then the moment Sonny’s possible bisexuality starts to seem like an intentional implication rather than an accident of incautious scripting”…

There’s a lot more to Miami Vice of course, and my memory of it is filtered through 30 years of life so it’s not perfect. You can find out more for yourselves if you want. I just find it very interesting that it’s Eddie who went as Crockett instead of Buck.

Interesting and exciting when we view it through the lens of Buddie possibly going canon in the future.

Why did you choose to be Crockett, Eddie? What is your subconscious telling you that you aren’t ready to hear yet Mr Diaz ‘who freaked out that your girlfriend was a Catholic nun’, hmmm?

Objectively hilarious premise, especially when we find out:

There are two love interests for a girl character and while Sam Carr,

supports one of them, House says something along the lines of „Why can’t she have both?”, implying a polyamorous relationship between a girl and two guys.

Call me evil if you want but I must say I am looking forward to watching them repeatedly face plant into the lava in full animated glory. Especially Keyleth's nat 1 when the battle is over trying to get to the unconscious and sizzling Vax lmfao. At that point it's so horrific it circles back around into being hilarious.

The whole thing lives rent free in my brain. If they could incorporate those vibes somehow that would be awesome. I know it was Tal and Marisha not Percy and Keyleth, but we just need some of that energy because that nat 1 trying to jump across the lava after everyone got their asses handed to them by dragons for hours, half the party unconscious or dead is so fucking funny. 2:43:43 is just before this moment in C1 episode 80 Raishan.
