Hey! I don’t feel comfortable talking about this off anon, but I just want to say it is so refreshing that someone else was thinking what I was thinking when Buck and Gerrard. (I.e. your numb fic) I’ve been looking for something like that, to explore those thoughts and I struggle to write myself. I’m just starting to make my way through the fic, and even though I don’t feel comfortable coming forward publicly, please know there are users like me out there, enjoying your fic but too afraid to attach a name to their enjoyment! It’s a tough topic, which you handle with care, so please know it’s appreciated! I was *beyond* happy to find this fic and have a safe space to explore this idea because it seemed so taboo and that no one else was willing to talk about or write about it. I was scared to get backlash or people would think Im a freak. Thank you for providing a space to explore this topic. I am enjoying it with you even if I’m not sharing. You’re more appreciated than you realize <3

I understand your hesitance completely – I was nervous about backlash myself when I started posting Numb but the fandom has shown me nothing but love for the story despite the dark subject matter.

If you ever want to leave anon comments on Numb or any other fic, you can use the Guest feature (just make sure you sign out of your AO3 account if you have one!). It only shows the name you put in, not the email you use for it. I hope you don’t take this as me telling you that you have to comment, I would never push anyone to do that -especially in a situation like yours, I just wanted to make you aware of that feature in case you didn’t know about it.

When I finished posting Numb, I genuinely thought that the “I only read completed works” crowd would descend and I’d get a wave of comments that made the months of effort feel worth it.

That didn’t happen. And I won’t lie, it got me down. Really down. It felt like shouting into the void after crawling to the finish line with broken hands.

To be very clear, I’m deeply grateful to everyone who supported the story as I was posting it — your comments kept me going when I thought I might not make it to the end and almost gave up. Those extra long therapy chapters? They exist because of you. They didn't exist in my first draft of what I then thought was the complete story. But you were all so invested in Buck's journey that you deserved to have that part of it, too. They're my thank you to everyone who read along as I posted.

Then I finished it, my longest work yet. The one I'm proudest of. And I got... well, not crickets, but something close. That plus some stuff happening in real life combined and I lost all motivation for writing. I tried to claw my way back with a new fic but that didn't work so great.

But now? Now there are not one but two readers who are working your way through Numb, leaving amazing comments chapter by chapter, and I am completely feral about it. I am vibrating. I am emotionally unwell in the best possible way.

I don't know who you are, exhaustedpirate and daninitot, but if I could still have children I’d be considering naming them after you both. As it stands, characters in upcoming fics might have to suffer that honour.

And I will reply to your comments, I’m just a little scared that doing so before you finish the fic might break the spell in some way (it’s happened before)!

Anyway. Just know that you are fuelling me. You’re enabling me. I make little squeaks of happiness every time I get a comment from either of you. I hope you're proud of yourselves. I hope you're happy. I hope you— wait no come back I love you please never stop!!!

i don’t have any money on marriage of convenience but GOD i wish they would do it. like usually it’s a silly fic trope but that’s something they would ACTUALLY DO. we’re talking about edmundo diaz who put evan buck buckley in his will AND DIDNT TELL HIM UNTIL A YEAR LATER. so they’re living together and eddie can’t think of a way to stop buck from moving so he just suggests “what if you adopted chris” and buck’s like. . eddie. please don’t joke about that,

he’s fighting back tears and eddie scrambles eddie voice shit if you don’t want to you don’t have to i was just— and then buck realizes he was serious so they start looking into adoption and once they find out that it’s easier for stepparents they’re like 🤔 ☝🏻😮💡 URETHRA!

🙂‍↕️no exactly. and i think marriage of convenience works so well for them because 1. eddie not knowing how to say how he feels about buck except through the Big Gesture (aka asking buck to marry him before actually confronting how he feels) 2. buck’s craving to belong to a family and figuring “this might be the best i can get” and willingness to settle for what he thinks is a platonic marriage. so the whole thing is kind of the perfect storm for all of their various issues to intersect into this insane mutual pining “oh no i’m in love with my HUSBAND” storm

6: What makes this fic special (to you) or different from all your other fics?

Aww thank you. It’s not bad, just makes typing hard. And if anyone asks if I took my strapping off to type on my phone the answer is noooo, of course I didn’t!!!

I have to say, I love this question! Numb is special to me for many reasons but one I haven’t talked about is because of the scene/s where Buck just goes full angst and shreds Eddie to pieces so he’ll back off and leave Buck alone.

I’ve wanted them to fight properly (verbally not physically) ever since the post lawsuit grocery store fight and the chance to write a scene like that was wonderful. They both care so much about each other while also knowing all their flaws, I think a fight has the potential to get really vicious between them. So that’s what I wrote and I love how it turned out. I wish we could see something like that in canon someday.

My answer is no - as far as I can remember! That fic came from a server prompt that appealed to both @angelwithwingsoffire and I, and instead of duking it out we decided to team up. I am very glad we did, because I think the fic we wrote together is better than any we might have written alone.

(There may have been other ideas tossed in that prompt thread but it was a long time ago and I don’t remember any of them. The fic as it is though, it pretty much the same as the original prompt)

Now that I have the Supernatural and 9-1-1 fans attention, I want to rec Trust Me, Darlin’. ; an amazing 9-1-1/Supernatural Crossover fic written by my good friends @daniwib and @hella-cious .

This fic was one of the highlights of my summer in 2022. I looked forward to reading the weekly chapter updates as much as I did new episodes.

It has action. It has demons. It has the Bi-Dean we were denied. It has slightly jealous and protective Eddie Diaz. It has Castiel being his badass self. It’s got angst with a happy ending. And of course, it has its hot moments.

In short, this fic has lived in my head rent free for the past 3 years. So I highly recommend you check it out, read the tags, give it a read, and drop a kudos/comment.

An update: Scribd emailed me today confirming that my fic has been taken down from their site. When I and a friend both checked it is no longer there, which is a huge relief.

I'm still angry that someone thought it was ok to do that, though. And a quick search of Scribd shows there are several accounts who have uploaded AO3 fic. I could only find mine by searching Numb by DaniWib - searching my name alone found nothing even before the fic was taken down for some reason, but the full text found it. I am dreading the thought of needing to go through my fics title by title and search for them on there but I will because people posting my work when I have not given permission for them to do so is copyright infringement and I loathe that.

Share this with your writer friends so anyone who is concerned can search for their own works and get them taken down.

Today I learned that at least one of my fics has been uploaded to a site called Scribd by someone who is not me. I am nearly speechless with fury that someone has done this with a story I spent eight months working on.

That’s eight months of my life, of plotting and outlining and writing and rewriting, of hours and hours of research and editing drafts and late-night battles with characters who had their own ideas of where the story should go. Eight months of pulling something deeply personal out of myself and shaping it into something I was proud to share.

This isn’t just any fic. It’s the one I’m most proud of. I think it’s the best story I’ve ever written. And the fact that someone felt entitled to rip it off AO3 and shove it onto a paid platform without my consent like it was theirs to do that with - it makes me feel sick. Violated. FURIOUS.

This was never just something to be lifted and repackaged. Yes, I put it on AO3 to be read, and even downloaded - for free, by anyone who wants to - but I did not put it there for someone else to steal and profit from. Sharing isn’t the same as giving up ownership. Reposting it elsewhere, especially for profit, is not just disrespectful, it’s theft.

I am not familiar with it but apparently, Scribd is a paid subscription service – people pay to access content there. Which means someone is profiting from fanfiction they did not write, did not have permission to repost, and have no right to host. It is illegal to profit from fanfic, full stop. AO3’s Terms of Service are explicit about this. What makes it even worse is that the stolen works are clearly AO3 downloads, formatting and all, ripped straight from the site and thrown behind a paywall.

It’s also in direct violation of the permission statement on my AO3 profile, which very clearly says I do not allow my work to be posted anywhere else. This is not a misunderstanding. This is theft. I don’t care that this person is not profiting directly. They took my work and put it on a site where someone is profiting from it and attached their name to it as if they had any right to do that. That is not why the download function on AO3 is there.

May you be logged out of AO3 every time you open a tab, and locked out completely whenever you try to log back in. May every time you try to read fic, your device crashes before the page loads. May every download come with broken formatting and missing chapters. And may every pillow you ever sleep on be warm, lumpy, and slightly damp.

Yes, I am naming and shaming you. You deserve it as far as I’m concerned. As well as mine, you’ve posted work by three other authors I recognize. I’m tagging @rogerzsteven and @dreaming-marchling here on tumblr and letting the other know privately.
