It always bothers me when people paint duck out to be self loving when he is literally the opposite. At his core he feels completely and utterly unlovable, so he overcompensates. He resorts to Grandiosity to feel some level of control over his situation because he is nothing, nobody. Duck is the most objectified out of the trio, to the point of physical harm a lot of the time and because of that he is the most complacent in the cycle. He knows that no matter what he does bad things will happen, so he would rather play along and find the positives in their situation than find out what happens when he oversteps those boundaries. He knows what will happen if he does, so he never tries, there’s no point. Besides, living in delusion is fun, it makes him feel important. It distracts him from the fact that he is nothing but a pawn to some foreign entity he knows nothing about, one that devalues him any opportunity it can. He can continue to feel like the most important person in the universe if he continues to live in this little bubble. So what if he has to throw away the freedom he never had? The cycle has made it so Duck is constantly undermining his own comfort to uphold it. Like Red and Yellow it gets to him too, badly, but there is no time for his emotions. Sometimes he can’t hide them, they flow out of him like blood escaping from a gaping wound because underneath his composed surface is someone who is fighting a constant battle. A battle of feeling unlovable, objectified. It’s why he latches onto the idea of the trio being a family, they are all he has, one of the only bits of positivity in his miserable existence. The other two make him feel important, wanted, like his existence is worth something. They give him purpose, and he makes it his personal duty to ensure that bad things happen to them less.

I honestly can’t properly articulate how much I relate to him, like no amount of words will ever do it justice. His desperation to belong, to feel needed is something that haunts me on a daily basis. Then there’s his rituals to keep everything running smoothly, his visual inventory Sure, they cause more harm than good mostly but he can’t stop because they’re the very fabric holding their world together in his mind. A protective measure, if he stops then everything goes bad. I relate deeply to his need for attachment with the other two. I would latch on and never let go if I found my people too. I love to talk about how I don’t need anyone but me, myself, and I, but I’m deeply lonely and constantly craving companionship. I’m not alone by choice, it’s just that I never feel understood, never have. Duck feels understood and seen by his friends, even if they don’t share the same sentiments always. I feel this is something people get wrong about him often. His feelings towards the other two are complicated yes, but he cares for them dearly. Because of his insecurities he can be cruel to them and will go out of his way to do so on purpose, but he doesn’t want to be. It’s a result of him feeling trapped, of feeling backed into a corner. In his mind his purpose is to be in the house, why else would they be there? This is all he knows. It has to mean something, their existence isn’t meaningless. So why question it? What purpose does that serve? They are worth something, he’s worth something. It’s why he gets so worked up over the notion of change, or when anyone questions his logic. Yes, it’s miserable but we have a purpose, a role to play, we’re important here. Anything outside of this is unpredictable and scary, wrong. As long as they play along and everything stays in its place bad things will happen less, they’ll be useful. There is someone so distinctly human underneath the masks he puts on. It’s someone who is vulnerable and scared, full of emotion and passion. Someone who wants to be held and cherished but on his own terms. He would like to not be poked and prodded at like a lab experiment thank you very much. More than anything though, he wants to belong. Red and Yellow make him feel like he belongs even if they fight and bicker. They’re his family, they’re all he has really, aside from himself. He may always feel the need to overcompensate but at least he has his circle. At least he can have a few moments a day to feel like they’re a real family, that he is someone important.
