There are three big scenes that I'm really REALLY excited to share. Most of them are going to be very difficult for me to write, but they'll be worth it.

In order to avoid spoilers, I'll give two keywords to describe each scene.

It really is spectacular how much you don't realize a situation was bad until you leave it. I'm about 13 months removed from my old job now, and it came up in conversation with one of my direct reports. She commented jokingly about the security cameras we have, and I explained to her how my old company had forced software onto everyone's computers that they insisted was only a "tool" to help identify "processes that could benefit from efficiencies" but was, unsurprisingly, essentially spyware that they used to harass and terminate people for not spending every waking second of the day working. It was some AI-assisted nightmare that would begin recording if you hadn't clicked your mouse between screens or typed in 120 seconds. It logged everything you typed, whether you sent/posted it or not. It had a set "idea" of tasks it deemed value add or unproductive. It did not account for meetings or phone calls, it did not account for certain external and internal sites that were 100% job related. If you did not score a 97% average "productivity up" time at the end of the week, you were admonished. Yes, you should always assume your employer is "watching" but I cannot describe to you what it feels like to not only know that but to have that data rubbed in your face and to be made to feel like human dirt because you were sick or had a bad day or simply had a bunch of tasks that the system wasn't smart enough to deem productive. The irony of them telling me that I should utilize the company therapist/take a walk/stretch to cure the crippling depression I was experiencing at that job when their own software would punish me for not spending that time working. I know this kind of thing isn't unheard of with remote jobs, and obviously if someone is playing WoW all day every day instead of working then it's a problem. But most places you would hope would only look into that data if someone was really falling apart or you suspected like, illicit behavior. Instead they micromanaged everyone to death, uplifted the bootlickers and encouraged a culture of surveillance. I made a joke about how I still sometimes find myself frantically clicking around on my system at work as a reflex, and she was like "....dude, that's literally inhumane and I think you might be mildly traumatized." And you know what? She's probably not wrong! I remember always feeling crazy talking to friends in other jobs who were just like "yeah as long as you do your job description and aren't downloading porn to the work laptop no one really cares what you're doing." But I stayed because of my warped sense of self worth being tied to my salary and look what it got me. Yes, yes, it lead me to what is now a very good place but I also feel like... sometimes you do not need to be thankful for suffering. Sometimes it was just Bad.

Suni Lee nails this pass as is evidenced by that huge smile on her face!!! 😁her story is very, very inspiring and amazing. After taking home a medal in the last Olympics in Tokyo, she was diagnosed with two incurable forms of kidney disease. She was so sick that she was bedridden and gained 40 pounds. She thought that her gymnastics career was over. Thankfully, with help from her team doctor and support from her teammate and great friend, Simone Biles, she is in remission. She fought for her life, and she fought for her passion, gymnastics. They got her on the right meds, and she takes great care of herself so she has gotten better. She worked differently, and she worked hard to get back to gymnastics. I'm so happy that she's at the Olympics this year. She deserves to be there. She's a phenomenal athlete and an amazing person. Her story showed her that she can do anything. She's gonna win a medal. I just know it!!! She's already won the gold by getting better and getting back to gymnastics!! I'm so proud of what you've done, Suni!!! Let's go, Suni!! Let's go, USA!!! ❤️🤍💙

was thinking about lemony reading to babybea and suddenly remembered something i wrote last year and stuck in my drafts, incredibly unfinished but super cute

by the time this story takes place -- some time after the last time you may have heard of the baudelaires, but not so long that everything had been forgotten, by them or, i believe, by you -- my presence in the baudelaire household was not as much of a novelty as it had once been. it was for this reason that, when posed the question by my niece, sunny posed one of her own back, with only her regular amount of ire.

“dead guys or latkes?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. it was one of the colder evenings in january, and she and violet and klaus were seated on the floor of the big living room, beside the warmth of the electric fireplace violet put together some winters ago, organizing a great pile of the bottle caps violet had started collecting lately, for inventing purposes.

beatrice looked up at me. “dead guys or latkes?” she repeated.

“neither,” i said. “this story is about something else.”

“wow,” sunny called. “sounds great.”

violet and klaus exchanged a look. although they were, at this point, quite older than the conventional age at which one is read a story, i do not have to tell you that sometimes, even at the ages at which violet and klaus had now reached, there is nothing wrong with enjoying a story every now and then, or even more frequently, if you so like. i knew that they were also likely concerned about the subject matter; men no longer alive and an oil-fried potato pancake who spoke at a certain volume was not an exaggeration on the types of books i had written for beatrice, and violet and klaus had not especially liked the composer is dead, although they had favored, to my delight, the latke who couldn’t stop screaming. but any deliberation on their part, or teasing on sunny’s, i also knew, would ultimately be a moot point -- they would not deny beatrice, standing so eagerly in the doorway and looking so expectant.

I recently watched The Portable Door and I think it could appeal to anyone that loves the whimsical and wacky everyday fantasy of Nevermoor! It’s definitely more grounded in reality, but entertaining enough nonetheless. It’s about these two interns at a weird magical company that get involved in a sinister scheme. To put it in Nevermoor terms… it’s sort of like if C&D was run out of the Deucalion, which is run by Baz Charlton? Also Christoph Waltz plays a villain in a very Squall-like manner. I’m a sucker for whimsical fantasy movies, so if you are too, maybe give it a try.
