Batfamily member's civilian identity becomes some serial killer's target because it fits some profile. Cue said murderer going after this member of the Batfamily, earning a very shocked and mildly exasperated set of swear words and then getting their ass kicked. The Batfamily member doesn't even bother calling the cops, just tosses the would be killer in the back of their car (which has bloody gloves in the seat and weird files on people), leading the murderer to conclude they're in the presence of a much worse serial killer.

Tldr: Outsider POV fic where a Batfamily member earns the undying adoration of an actual murderer and it's a slow, convoluted process to getting the evidence to arrest them while also protecting their secret identity.

Since people have been talking about Squad Zero on one of my posts, I wanted to take the time to share my Squad Zero Lore that I made for a fanfic I'm writing

Rumors about Squad Zero make them seem significantly stronger than they are, though that is completely on purpose on their end. Their boosted power comes from being in the Royal Realm, which is the connecting point between the three realms (Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, World of the Living). This nexus of realms is subjected to a lot of power, which is reflected by the Royal Realm. That is also why the Royal Guard bankais shake all three realms, not because of how powerful they are, but because the place they were released in is connected to all three realms. The Royal Realm is actually technically accessible from all three realms, the soul society is the only one with a with an actual entrance.

Imagine the Royal Realm was a building with three walls. All three walls can be penetrated with enough force. They can be broken with less force if you know the right techniques. They all have vunerable spots like windows that can be broken more easily. However the Soul Society side has a door. If you have the key, you can open the door and enter no problem. The lock can also be picked for easy access, if you're skilled enough. To enter from the Shadow Realm would be like breaking in through the basement, much harder to do, but a lot less expected. And to be clear, it takes a LOT of power and skill to even begin to do ANY of these things.

Squad Zero captains are recruited for their intellect and resoursefulness. All of the Squad Zero captains invented something that became a core part of Soul Reaper operations (although that wasn't necessarily why they were recruited). They are all shown to be very resourceful. You can also be recruited from outside of the 13 Court Guard Squads if Ichibe decides you are valuble enough. O'Etsu and Tenjiro were not Soul Reapers when they were recruited.

O'Etsu was recruited before the 13 Court Guard Squads were a thing, due to inventing zanpakutos. This very much contribues to his arrogance, since he was the first person allowed in the Royal Realm besides Ichibe and Reio. Senjumaru was the original Lieutenant of Squad 12. She invented many things but most notably the shihakusho. But she was actually recruited for the invention of computers, which in real life were an evolution of the loom, so it fits with her character. They were fairly basic computers that future generations expanded on greatly, but she’s the one who got it started. She went straight from Lieutentent to Squad Zero captain. Tenjiro had trained Unohana in healing techniques, and then she adapted them to combat while he focused on creating stronger healing by condensing healing energy into a stationary location. He then declined a position with the Soul Reapers in favor of researching better healing, and eventually he invented the healing springs which allowed him to be invited to Squad Zero. It was also around when he was recruited that the Squad Zero captains were allowed to bring workers up to assist them in their duties. Kirio was recruited for her invention of soul candies and gigai. She was the most recently recruited. She feels very out of her depth in the Royal palace and is slowly realizing that Squad Zero is not the organization that she'd thought it was…

Just being in the Royal Realm gives you a power boost. The longer you are in there, the more your power is boosted. It takes about an hour for the boost to become noticable. This is where Renji's power boost came from and part of where Ichigo's power boost came from. The speed of growth is steady for about a month, upon which the growth rate starts slowing dramatically. Your power contines to grow, but not at nearly the same speed. After 10 years, the power growth is negligible. When you leave the Royal Realm, that boost starts to fade, and does so at a much greater speed than gaining that power in the first place, which is why Squad Zero rarely leave the Royal Realm. Part of the power boost is permanent, but a lot of it will fade over time once you leave the Royal Realm.

The exception to the "Squad Zero is not as stong as they seem" rule is Ichibe. He is wicked powerful. As the first living being, and as someone who has an emense amount of power, Ichibe is a lot stronger than people realize. ...or he would be if he didn't get super lazy over millennia and stop practicing his power, causing it to fade from disuse. He is genuinely strong, but if he were at full strength, Yhwach would’ve had no chance at defeating him.

Weighing in on the debate “Are you allowed to ship aromantic characters?” As an aromantic person, this is a difficult subject. On the one hand, we have characters who clearly and repeatedly state that they hate romance, do not feel romantic attraction, and don’t want to be in a relationship. On the other hand, we have your personal inability to engage with deep relationships without making them romantic. As a compromise, I say people are allowed to ship canon aromantic characters, provided they pay me at least $100 in cash for the license.

anytime I have to scroll thru a big fandom on ao3 there’s always dozens of chat fics and it makes me sad bc 9 times out of 10 they don’t have plots or are too ooc for me to want to read and it sucks bc I feel like the concept of an epistolary story told with only text messages is so fun!! Accounting for the diff ways characters would type/use emojis/emotes, how fast they would respond (if they have time stamps in the story) who’s getting left on read, trying to extrapolate what’s going on behind the texts, how a plot could progress in a text only format… it has so much potential yet usually it’s only lolrandom type meme stories which don’t scratch that itch for me 😔

Okay, so PD s11 finale theories:

Route A: they work real hard get to the killer and Voight but it's too late and he's dead/dying/dies en route to Med/at Med

Though I'm not so sure abt this cause we haven't heard about Jason's leaving (no, I am not up to date with who's already been confirmed to stay, sorry)

And if this happens, I think Hailey, or someone else on the team (prob Hailey), will kill the offender and it won't be the best of shoots so she'll be forced out of the department, or it'll take a toll on her and she'll take Petrovic's advice and make a change in her life (leaving cpd, and what I'm gonna say now is another discussion entirely but: she might not even wanna continue to be a cop and let's remember she has a college degree!).

OR

She'll just be really shaken by Voight's d3ath (which will be her losing another one she loved/who was her family) and will leave bc of that, she'll think that job is taking more than giving.

Route B (a happier and therefore less likely one, lol): everything will work out and Voight will be okay but Upton's good work as a team leader will be so praised that she'll get some sort of promotion and will have the opportunity (and accept, again, following Petrovic's advice) to lead another team.

OR

Even saving Voight, she'll kill the guy (or he will!! And she'll want to take the heat) and be asked to leave the pd/leave bc she can't leave like that anymore.

In summary, I think the episode, despite being a finale (which are usually more team-coded), will be Upton centric and will highlight those conversations abt mental health and change between her and Petrovic and that's gonna have everything to do with her leaving.

Another conclusion I'm reaching after e12 is that (total shocker, yes I know 🤡) there will be no upstead reunion/closure whatsoever, bc Hailey's departure is not gonna have anything to do with that. And even though I will most likely be over the moon if we get at least a phone call with Jay, I don't think that should happen bc as much as they did the upstead break up really dirty and bad and fucked up with all those unanswered phone calls and stuff, I think it wouldn't make any sense to bring him back or even up at all again, for obvious reasons: we haven't heard about Jay/upstead in forever now. Literally no mentions that either even happened on the show ever since Jo's first episode where she points out that Hailey just got a divorce. And even though Hailey's not healed at all after all she went through (not just Jay's leaving!!), it's like she has gotten some sense of closure on that part of her life and to bring that all up again would just be straight up cruel with her/them (cause whatever happens, I don't see them getting back together, so...). But this is a drama (read character-hater) show, so who knows, right?

pretty sure i grinded totk the week it came out and it died down as weeks passed not because of disinterest but because i've been occupied. especially since i'm in the middle of preparing for finals.. which right now is just a chunky take home essay exam

but anyway! ah zelink. some totk spoilers below:

part of me is disappointed zelda isnt playable but i knew deep down that wasn't gonna happen so i dont waste my time complaining... don't really know when tloz will deviate from its formula and make zelda a heroine instead of a damsel in distress. however part of me indulges in her absence in totk because of the zelink anecdotes in hyrule (not that. there was a lot, but i'm a little bit deranged over these two. like zelda's diary in hateno, link's hair tie) heehee. it's really hard for me to pinpoint the common trends and patterns of my favorite ships but i will always be a sucker for implicit and anecdotal romance. oh the YEARNING and sorrows and quiet intimacy. when i found out zelda was the light dragon i couldnt stop thinking about link touching his forehead with hers or lying down on her back clutching her golden mane eyes closed and yearning and apologetic and missing. etecetera. every time i think of a new situation i get chest pains. his princess and her knight. AUGH. do you know how lethal it was when i started out totk playing as link and zelda was moving RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. THEY'RE TOGETHER. do you also know how lethal it was when we got separated and would remain separated for the rest of the game. man. havent finished the game yet but i hope for an epic cutscene of them together at some point. will probably die if(when? ;_;) that happens

zelink's relationship status is ambiguous and remains conceptual to me. not explicitly romantic, not friendship either. perhaps the most accurate label i can give them is qpr? not sure. i just enjoy these two a lot hahaha.

⭐️ for the To Be series 👀

Anything I want, you say? The To Be (One With the Garden) series of mine they are referring to is...a lot. It's intended to be very open-ended, with a lot of things never being outright stated, and if you read any given fic with a given assumption about Olimar's unfortunate situation, said fic(s) can easily be made more or less horrifying. Add in the fact that neither Olimar nor the Pikmin are always entirely what you'd call a very reliable narrator (no matter how much the former likes to think he is, for the most part), especially as time goes on, and well...things can get tricky, to put it mildly.

As a result, it can be kinda hard to talk about this series, because I don't want people to take my own reading as fact on too many things. It's more fun seeing what kind of interpretations people come to on their own, at least, in my opinion as the author of these four things.

So hm...What to talk about, what to talk about...Do I point out that one bit where I fucked up how much oxygen is in the Earth's atmosphere that's been driving me a little crazy? It's 21% not 70%...Wait! This is probably going to be one of the only times I get to share some language factoids about the Pikminish language I've imagined the characters speaking that I have been writing with in mind! Check what I wrote in Discord convos... remove parts that are kinda spoilery to that huge knife twist in the "back half" I've been planning since the beginning...Place cut for my non-Pikmin followers and here!

Generally speaking, Pikminish outright lacks pronouns. Where pronouns would be in English is generally something most would understand in context. It is generally assumed that plural takes precedent, unless stated to be otherwise (so the word that would most closely resemble "I" and "you" when one must state the topic would most literally translate as "this one" and "that one"). Referring to a third person is referenced through hand gestures like pointing, or through the use of titles (like "Leader", that is ever present). The thing about the Pikmin, you see, is that referring to the group is taken to be the norm due to their odd eusocial structure (For those not familiar with it, eusociality refers to the sort of social structure things like ant nests and bee hives have, although the version in "To Be" is more a cliffnotes version). This is why the default pronoun for the Pikmin is "We" in these fics with "I" being emphasized, due to the fact that they find it unnatural to refers to themselves as individuals. There's, unfortunately, no real way to communicate this in English, but if you are familiar with languages like Japanese, it's kinda like that except Worse.

Adding onto this is the fact that the Pikmin, lacking a social concept of gender, naturally lack a language feature for gender. This is why they refer to Olimar with they/them pronouns, which is something I've mentioned before I think. However, something I haven't mentioned is that I tend to think of Hocotatian as a language with quite a few similarities to Pikminish, one feature of such being that it is similarly context based, although Hocotatian is more just average pronoun avoidant as opposed to outright lacking in pronouns. This is why Olimar never so much as remarks on it when he probably would've otherwise: gender in Hocotatian is typically conveyed through gendered nouns applied to people (think "salesman" or "actress"). As the situation he's found himself in is one in which use of nouns that would be gendered in Hocotatian are few and far between, it's not something he ever really has any opportunity to pick up on, and so it goes unremarked upon. Naturally, English, being a very pronoun heavy language, this kinda makes conveying that specific detail nigh-impossible outside of something like this. Curse you English, you broken broken language.

I like to imagine Pikminish as one of those languages where common words tend to translate to something flowery in another. Not bad for a language where sentences tend to be fast and words are stuffed with as much information as they can be! (Never know when predators might be on the prowl, after all.) This ties into the very musical way I like to imagine them talking, but you already know that, and this thingy is for things I can't convey in fic.

Word order is more than likely SOV in both Pikminish and Hocotatian. (Subject -> Object -> Verb order for those unaware). It's a very common order for words to flow in general out in the real word though, right next to SVO. I just thought this detail was interesting. (English is SVO, so this would've been impossible for me to convey). I like to imagine Pikminish as having pitch accent as well, due to a lack of varied sounds to create various different combinations of words with.

I would've killed to explain any of this in fic, but as you can kinda observe, Olimar is not a language nerd (and therefore would have no reason to take note of any of these things...Though I imagine his notes would've been very extensive if he was lol), and the Pikmin sure as hell aren't. So unfortunately, a lot of this had to go unexplained, even though I was writing these fics with that in mind.

Sorry if this isn't the most interesting director's commentary, but I really wanted to get this bit out there somewhere considering I couldn't write any exposition on it in naturally. But I had fun writing this out, so I hope that counts for something!

Who, in all honesty, can resist the badass tol and reckless smol dynamic? Especially when they're as delightful as these two? I especially appreciate that while 5-8 IS kind of serious and grumpy, he also smiles quite a lot. That was a nice surprise tbh. And while Sa Wol is reckless, he has some very nice and serious moments, too.

Long story short, I just really love these characters xD

And I hope you'll enjoy the fic! There isn't a whole lot in the fandom so far, but at least I'm doing my part in fixing that, I guess? xD And it will be a long one! Because my habit of kicking down the door to new fandoms and throwing a whole fucking novel in people's faces is still going strong, it seems.
