New Zealand Launches New Visa for Workers to Aid in Flood Recovery
The New Zealand government is introducing a new Recovery Visa to fast-track the entry of workers who are needed to aid the country in recovering from recent weather-related disasters.
"The Recovery Visa means overseas specialists needed to support the recovery efforts can come here immediately," said Immigration Minister Michael Wood.
The visa will cover migrant workers are able to provide the following support:
providing emergency response
immediate clean-up
assessing risk or loss
infrastructure, building and housing stabilisation and/or repair (including planning functions)
work that directly supports the recovery (e.g., producing relevant materials for road rebuild, transport drivers, etc)
"The visa will last for up to six months. The fee will be refunded for successful applicants, making it free for those who come here," Wood said.
The government said it is expediting Recovery Visa applications with an aim to accomplish them within seven days.
The new visa comes after New Zealand was battered by flooding during the Auckland Anniversary weekend and following the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle.
Similar visa pathways were previously introduced in New Zealand following the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, Wood said in a media release.
What It Means for Employers
Employers will need to complete a Recovery Visa Employer Supplementary Form to confirm that the role they are filling supports the country's recovery from recent extreme weather events, according to Immigration NZ.
"This visa is not available to industries providing indirect support (e.g., businesses in the affected areas facing an increased demand for services) or to backfill vacancies of people leaving roles to work on the recovery," the agency said.
It further clarified that the Recovery Visa is not limited to roles in the North Island, noting that some direct support industries are also based in the South Island.
Business, Union Reactions
Businesses and unions across New Zealand welcomed the government's initiative on a Recovery Visa.
Business NZ, however, said the criteria needs to be broad to support all aspects of recovery.
"Firms need to be able to put forward the right person for the job at hand and businesses need flexibility to respond to the circumstances they are facing," Business NZ chief executive Kirk Hope said in a statement. "The recovery and getting businesses and communities back on their feet will take longer than six months, and firms need to be able to plan for recovery efforts while ensuring they don’t fall further behind on other critical projects and work. Those on work visas in-country need the opportunity to move to where their skills are needed."
The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU) also called for the protection of the workers who will be granted entry through the pathway.
"Protections were not applied well enough to people who arrived here as RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employer) workers. We need to do more to ensure all Recovery Visa workers are safeguarded from exploitation," NZCTU president Richard Wagstaff said in a statement.
Further Measures
In addition to introducing a Recovery Visa, the government said it is also providing further support to Immigration New Zealand to speed up visa processing.
"The Public Service Commission is working with Immigration New Zealand to bring in additional medical assessors and identity specialists as additional resource from across the private and public sector to support overall visa processing timeframes," Wood said. "These skills will be made available to Immigration as they are freed up elsewhere. It's important however to stress they will not be pulled from the immediate Cyclone response."
Wood also clarified that the introduction of Recovery Visas will "not change global workforce shortages that are still at play."
"We need to accept the visa may not see the same level of uptake of those in the past – but we understand how important it is to do all we can to relieve pressure on business," he said. "As we gain a greater understanding of the scope and specialist skills required for the recovery, we will look to introduce further initiatives to support access to additional offshore labour."
Previously, the government announced grants for businesses to help them recover following the weather-related disruptions.

Sometimes the only thing that keeps me going in this joke of a country is the schadenfreude Trump supporters keep supplying me with.
I like to think of myself as a kind person, and I can be empathetic to a fault sometimes. I would also be totally lying if I said I wasn't thoroughly enjoying seeing all the Trump voters who are finally starting to question whether or not their billionaire daddies Trump and Musk actually have their best interests at heart.
Like right now there's that debate going on about H1B visas; Elon Musk has openly and repeatedly stated his desire to exploit the labor of immigrants because it's so much cheaper than American labor. Trump seems to be backing him up. And everywhere I go Trumpers being like "wow, I had no idea Trump would sell American workers out!!! Very disappointed in him."
Literally how many times does this man have to hit you in the fucking face and spit in your mouth before you finally catch on that he doesn't care about you at all, lmao. I'm genuinely embarrassed for you that you keep putting up with this.
#the comments on a New York Post article about H1B visas is SOOOOOO funny#hundreds of comments from Trumpers crying about how they feel betrayed but are still totally glad Kamala didn't win#it doesn't matter because this is the 12980th time Trump has fucked them over and they'll keep crawling back to him anyway#it's a cult#politics#us politics#h 1b visa#elon musk#fuck elon musk#fuck trump#schadenfreude#leopards ate my face#leopards eating people's faces party

Prompt 273
You know what? We need more Good parents Fentons.
And you know what else? Technically, Jack helped Danny defeat Pariah via the use of the Ecto-Skeleton. And like, that’s his son, his baby boy. Sure Danny is and has always been a mommy’s boy, but it doesn’t change that fact. They’re both already feeling horrible about the fact they could have hurt him, they could have hurt their son- they have hurt their son, killed him with their inaction and never again.
So when these oversized jello-eyeballs try to insist that their baby, their precious baby boy, take a crown? Become a king when he’s not even out of highschool, when he doesn’t want it? No. Hell no! That is his Danny-o, his baby boy who was terrified of his own parents!
Which is how Jack, despite technically still being alive even if so-very ecto-contaminated, became the Ghost King.
And for some reason there’s several ghosts rather happy about this- oh, these are his Danny-O’s ghost-parents? Not-ghost parents seeing as some of them have never been anything but a realm denizen? That’s really fascinating- y’know what, want some fudge and we can exchange childcare- Maddie dear come over and meet our co-parents apparently!
Now it’s not all easy, but they’re trying their best, and that’s all that can be asked.
…
Which is perhaps why it’s so exasperating- or as Maddie would put it, downright infuriating- that it is now, almost an entire year and a half later that the Heroes finally arrive to investigate. Well, at least he has plenty of fudge since it’s almost time for the council meeting.
#DCxDP#DPxDC#Prompts#Ghost King Jack#Jack is never picking up a gun again#Why yes they did have a one-night stand with Constantine before#The fentons adopt Ellie as soon as they can which also ends with some conversations with Vlad#Lots of conversations & therapy and Y E A H#Jack is like an unmovable object and Danny is like an unstoppable force#Dan gets snatched up the moment he goes back in time from his timeline#He has no clue wtf to do because it’s Not Fair that Danny gets this#That he gets his parents- that he gets acceptance#Dan doesn’t realize until the whole Fentom Family (& Vlad) hugs him that he realizes he can#Jordan is very overprotective of his second chance at family thanks to trauma#Somehow him and Vlad get on well together- probably the villain-leaning habits#GIW had a complete info blackout on Amity to the point they erased the existence of the city#Hence why it took so long for the heroes to find out#Eventually via Deadman after he disappears for a bit & returns telling them there’s a new king & everyone#is getting little information packets on new rules & getting their paperwork taken care of#Pretty much getting visa (Sp?) cards on what they’re doing in the living world

Trump takes Elon Musk's side in H-1B visa debate, says he's always been a fan of the program
President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday sided with his top supporter and billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk in a public spat over the use of the H-1B visa, saying he fully supports the foreign tech worker program, which some of his supporters oppose. Trump’s remarks followed a series of social media posts by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla (TSLA.O) and SpaceX, who vowed on Friday night to go to “war” to protect the U.S. foreign worker visa program. Trump, who has tried to limit the use of visas during his first term, told the New York Post on Saturday that he also favored the visa program. “I have a lot of H-1B visas in my portfolio, I’m a big fan of H-1B. “I’ve used it many times. It’s a great program,” he said. Elon Musk, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in South Africa, has been granted an H-1B visa, and his electric car company Tesla has been granted 724 such visas this year. H-1B visas are generally valid for three-year periods, although holders can extend them or apply for a green card.
The row was sparked earlier this week by far-right activists who criticized Trump's choice of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-American venture capitalist, to be an artificial intelligence advisor, saying it would influence the Trump administration's immigration policies.
Elon Musk's tweet was aimed at Trump supporters and immigration extremists, who are increasingly calling for the repeal of the H-1B visa program amid a heated debate over immigration and the place that skilled immigrants and foreign workers bring into the country with work visas. On Friday, Steve Bannon, a confidant of Trump, criticized the "big tech oligarchs" for supporting the H-1B program and called immigration a threat to Western civilization. In response, Musk and many other tech billionaires have drawn a line between what they consider legal immigration and illegal immigration. Trump has promised to deport all immigrants who are in the United States illegally, impose tariffs to help create more jobs for American citizens and severely limit immigration. The visa issue shows how technology leaders like Musk - who played an important role in the presidential transition, advising key personnel and policies - are now attracting the attention of their base. The U.S. tech industry relies on the government’s H-1B visa program to hire skilled foreign workers to help run their companies, a workforce that critics say undercuts the wages of American citizens. Elon Musk spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars to help Trump get elected in November. He has been writing regularly this week about the lack of domestic talent to fill all the positions needed at American tech companies.

Trump sides with Elon Musk in H-1B visa debate, says he's always been in favor of the program…
President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday sided with key supporter and billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk in a public dispute over the use of the H-1B visa, saying he fully backs the program for foreign tech workers opposed by some of his supporters.
Trump's remarks followed a series of social media posts from Musk, the CEO of Tesla (TSLA.O) and SpaceX, who vowed late Friday to go to "war" to defend the visa program for foreign tech workers.
Trump, who moved to limit the visas' use during his first presidency, told The New York Post on Saturday he was likewise in favor of the visa program.
"I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I've been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It's a great program," he was quoted as saying.
Musk, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in South Africa, has held an H-1B visa, and his electric-car company Tesla obtained 724 of the visas this year. H-1B visas are typically for three-year periods, though holders can extend them or apply for green cards.
The altercation was set off earlier this week by far-right activists who criticized Trump's selection of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, to be an adviser on artificial intelligence, saying he would have influence on the Trump administration's immigration policies.
Musk's tweet was directed at Trump's supporters and immigration hard-liners who have increasingly pushed for the H-1B visa program to be scrapped amid a heated debate over immigration and the place of skilled immigrants and foreign workers brought into the country on work visas.
On Friday, Steve Bannon, a longtime Trump confidante, critiqued "big tech oligarchs" for supporting the H-1B program and cast immigration as a threat to Western civilization.
In response, Musk and many other tech billionaires drew a line between what they view as legal immigration and illegal immigration.
Trump has promised to deport all immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, deploy tariffs to help create more jobs for American citizens and severely restrict immigration.
The visa issue highlights how tech leaders like Musk -- who has taken an important role in the presidential transition, advising on key personnel and policy areas -- are now drawing scrutiny from his base.
The U.S. tech industry relies on the government's H-1B visa program to hire foreign skilled workers to help run its companies, a labor force that critics say undercuts wages for American citizens.
Musk has spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump get elected in November. He has posted regularly this week about the lack of homegrown talent to fill all the needed positions within American tech companies.

a cry for help from the near-forgotten and invisible people of gaza - DAY ???
hello again, i have returned briefly thanks to a new friend's allowing me to utilize their wifi hotspot- (thank you deranged_abberation2443 on reddit!!) and i wanted to also say thank you to everyone who has helped even by simply reblogging my prior posts as even if you are unable to donate, any amount of visibility is not only helpful but neccesary.
i come to you now happy to still be alive- head hurting from the explosions - despite the hell we have all endured so far- this morning we said our prayers and it was as if for a brief moment- nature itself stood with us- i reminded myself to admire the present moment for my sanity would wane without these small moments of gratitude.
we have endured.
it is far from over.
since last posting, i have known 5 people whom were incredibly close to me to either be killed in the rubble or succumb to their untreated wounds. it is hell on earth. in heaven, there is another gaza, one filled with our fallen friends and family, all smiling and happy and free- waiting with open arms for the rest of us to finally come home.
for us still tasked with our time here in gaza on earth- we absolutely still need your help. if there is anything you can do- do it. friends in the western world- protest, bring light to this hidden horror, call it what it is- a genocide. disturb the comfort and peace so easily used to forget the truth of your neighbors crying for help, disturb public events with cries of gaza' s need, it is not rude but necessary- tell anyone who will listen and shout it at those who will not- we need you our brothers and sisters of the human race. please help us be free from this rampant and horrific inhumane injustice to our people. we are victims of someone elses perception of wrongdoing. we have nothing to do with the people killing us, we are just being made an example for some unrelated and greedy or monsterous need.
if you can reblog this please do, visibility is essential. donations help immensely in any amount. i have had my dear american friend who is the very reason you are able to read this post now- to make me a new paypal account and if i am not mistaken a crowdfunding account of some sort as well- i give her my utmost thanks- without her i would be as most of the rest of my people are- invisible.
ok it turns out that paypal is being annoying as hell so im gonna have to ask for crypto currently as i have no other way of receiving the money.
DONATE HERE:
ETH: 0xD8819EE9179e839859C1410b544110dB9B5E8991
BTC: 3QDuXseMQTXRvh2dVmdjcbfFUj3DoL4nJu

USDT: erd10zh2scz8aaz000kmz8huj7fewkx4jht5an2npp2gwc7ex9800m2ssrz0na
i will also include the cashapp of my american friend though it is also probably going to be a bad move because like paypal its gonna shut down or lock which risks losing all donations. the best way to do it as of right now is more than likely through crypto. yay, the future? i still dont fully understand it but i know it works.
cashapp: $jaybeelerclt
once again thank you so much for your time, please donate if you can, it will help us survive. maybe even escape. i will stay until the very last drop of blood is shed though. my mother and brother were martyrs.

Having just tucked his oldest son into bed on Wednesday evening, Sebastian Ibarra walked into his living room at home in British Columbia's North Okanagan district and saw a text from his spouse asking if he'd seen the news.
He did a quick online search and learned that the federal government was reimposing some visa requirements on visiting Mexican nationals to curb the number of asylum claims in Canada and stem the flow of people crossing into the United States.
Taken aback, Ibarra said he thought of his parents and brother — who are supposed to visit him from Mexico this summer.

Frustrating when a VC-funded company gets credit for being the "first" and the "leader," when they had a sub-component demo the same week we had a full-system demo. Like, we are easily 5-10 years ahead of them, it's ridiculous; their approach isn't even yet proven to work. But they get science youtubers talking about them.
Because they're VC-funded, they have a marketing/press department.
And because we're an employee-owned company working off of government contracts, well, most government contracts get slapped with an ITAR label (an old Cold-War-era law saying basically sharing scientific information counts as illegally selling arms/munitions). So if you want to publicize your work, including your company's products, you have to appeal that label. (Universities have specifically negotiated a blanket exemption, so if you spend your whole life in academic science you might never even know about this.)
(My previous employer filed those appeals several times a year in order to do press releases and publish journal articles and apply for patents. I think every single information-release appeal they filed went through, because there's no reason any of this stuff should be labeled as arms--it's literally the same stuff universities are doing. My current employer is afraid to, which I think is wrong-headed; at worst they'll just say no, and anyway, our non-restricted competitors are giving fucking lab tours to youtubers.)
#these restrictions mean you also can't have employees on visas working on these projects#my previous employer tried to appeal that too and failed--they were only able to appeal the dissemination of information part#so we had locked labs that my international coworkers weren't allowed in#(one got a green card and was allowed in eventually)#ironically the VC-funded company is doing it the same way I did it in my PhD thesis#two other people at the company did this stuff in their post-docs#all of us are over 40 (one guy is over 50 I'm pretty sure) so this is not a new technique--I got two MINOR papers on it 16 years ago#the MAJOR papers are like 25 years old#and we're all convinced it's NOT the right approach#granted the technique we are using is about 30 years old#in my literal thesis defense one of my committee members asked why I was using the technique the VC companies are now using#and if I had done the math to prove it was superior to the older technique#and I was like--everyone knows the new technique is superior that's why it's trendy#and my advisor (who was a genius) said the same thing and that it wasn't a fair question#but the guy who asked it was an ancient theorist who REALLY knew what he was talking about#and in retrospect he was completely right--I should have done the math comparing the techniques and the older technique IS better#a few weeks into my job here I did the math and found that if you use the BEST version of the new technique--one that only one group#has demonstrated can even be done and they didn't get all the way to the point of demonstrating an application like this#and you assume some generous efficiency numbers#it breaks even with the old technique#that's not what this VC group is doing so... not a chance lol
