A bit chilly for al fresco studying, but that doesn't seem to bother these students at Columbia University, ca. 1938.

ultimate test prep checklist: the day before
a few years back, i made a checklist to help keep me on track for major testing days. it helped a lot, so just decided to share it!
Tumblr media
☐ get at least 7 hours of sleep before your test. for teenagers, get at least 8-9 hours. make sure you don't oversleep, though; you can end up groggy on testing day. i've said this once and i'll say it again: good sleep is crucial for test scores. avoid stupid mistakes as much as possible.
☐ eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast. go for fruits, oats, eggs- whatever can keep you awake & alert throughout the day without making you crash from a sugar high.
☐ don't continue cramming on the night before. it sounds counterintuitive, but anything you do the night before will only make you more agitated the next day + won't even matter, since one day of studying doesn't make much difference. instead, focus on getting a good night's sleep.
☐ stay hydrated. don't underestimate how much hydration can affect your concentration. a general rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces.
☐ organize your materials. no one wants to show up on testing day and realize their calculator died. make sure you pack everything you need and might need (better be safe than sorry), including chargers, extra pencils, and your notes.
☐ always arrive five minutes early. you want to have time to set your materials up and have advance notice in case anything goes wrong. start your test on a good note.
☐ do a light review a few hours before. do not cram. just review your notes, go over the concepts in your brain. now is not the time to ask questions about concepts you're confused about.
☐ stay confident & calm. you got this! one test won't be the end of everything. remain calm throughout the test and DO NOT PANIC. panicking will make everything worse- stay calm and skip questions you don't understand. you can always go back to them afterwards.
and that's a wrap! hopefully you all found this useful.
i've also created a google docs you can print out, which can be accessed here:
test-taking strategies, part 4 - full series here!

Students Establish The National Transgender Leadership Conference Committee to Develop Trans Leadership Across the US.
Tumblr media
In response to the hostile climate under the Trump administration, a new generation of trans leaders is emerging to advocate for their rights and build a supportive network, the 19th reports.
Lily Rood, a transgender student and the first transgender woman to serve as class president at Mount Holyoke College, has taken the initiative to form the National Transgender Leadership Conference Committee (NTLCC).
The goal of NTLCC is to cultivate trans leaders across the United States and counter the dehumanizing rhetoric that threatens their existence.
Rood, along with other student advocates like Jay Jones, the first transgender student body president at Howard University, and Forest Cusolito, a student at Smith College, aims to organize a summit in Western Massachusetts for young and early-career trans individuals.
Their mission is to empower trans people to become leaders in various fields, including politics, art, science, and community service, to foster understanding and break down the divisions created by anti-trans policies.
The NTLCC plans to offer online programs throughout the year to help trans people develop essential skills in communication, networking, and leadership. They also intend to bring prominent trans speakers to their conferences and summits.
The 19th has more!

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #37
Oct 4-11 2024
President Biden announced a new EPA rule that will require all lead pipes in America's drinking water systems to be replace with-in 10 years. This builds on the $15 billion the Biden-Harris Administration has already invested in replacing lead pipes nation wide. The administration's focus on this issue has allowed local governments to greatly execrate their lead pipe replacement plans, before Biden took office the city of Milwaukee's timeline for replacing its lead pipes was 60 years, they're now on track to do it in 10. The EPA says there's no safe level of lead in the human body.
Vice President Harris announced she plans to expand Medicare to cover home health care. Currently those who need long term care, are covered by Medicaid, the health program for the poor so have to spend all their savings before they can qualify. This change would allow more seniors to stay in their homes and offer support to caregiving family members. Medicare also covers the disabled thus proving a game changer for the disabled Americans and their families. The Vice President also endorsed expanding Medicare to cover the costs of hearing and vision care.
Medicare released a preliminary list of 101 generic drugs which it would cover that would cost no more than $2 for a month for enrollees. People have long lobbied to allow Medicare to pay for generic drugs which has been resisted by drug companies. Thanks to President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, and in line with a Biden Executive Order Medicare is now working on bring low cost generic drugs to seniors. The list targets some of the most common prescriptions thus will bring savings to the most people.
Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden announced that the Biden-Harris Administration had blown past its goal of hiring 250,000 student support staff for 2024. The joint effort by the Department of Education, AmeriCorps and Everyone Graduates Center managed to hire 320,000 tutors, mentors, student success coaches, postsecondary transition coaches, and student support coordinators nationwide, its goal for the end of 2025.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced $420 million to help get rid of lead paint and other lead hazards from homes. HUD estimates that over 3 million households that have children under the age of 6 live with lead hazards. HUDs grants will go to all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico with particular focus on low income housing.

Note: Not counting raffles/sweepstakes/lotteries. If you got top 3 in a competition and personally consider that a form of winning, that counts as winning.
