M-M-M-Max Head-Head-Head-Headroom

First, a bit of history...

In the early 80s, a sub-genre of science fiction known as “cyberpunk” was created. The overall theme of the genre was a dystopian future where corporations have more authority than the government (why does that sound eerily familiar?). Most of the more popular source material includes a world where all computers are connected via a nebulous network known as “cyberspace” (OK, this is getting a bit too close to home...) where artificially intelligent entities evolve and potentially begin to take over (Now hang on a minute!). Most stories revolve around a street-level “hero” struggling against the status quo to try to give some power back to the little guys.

Over the next few years, it started becoming more mainstream, including the films Blade Runner and The Terminator.

Which brings us to this review...after a bit of backstory.

The British network Channel Four wanted to create a music video show starring the first-ever “computer-generated host” known as Max Headroom (played by Matt Frewer, who would later play Moloch in Watchmen), but first they had to explain where this entity came from. So they produced a TV movie called Max Headroom, 20 Minuted Into the Future, where Frewer played Edison Carter, a reporter who was comatose after running his motorcycle into a sign labelled “max. headoom 2.3 meters” (in the UK, they use “maximum headroom” as opposed to “maximum height” in the US) The network uploaded his brainwave patterns in an attempt to gain whatever information Edison nearly died to obtain, and those brainwaves created...

Max Headroom (whose program glitches frequently, making him seem like he has a stutter and, despite being the intellectual property of whatever network created him, is very anti-establishment, often insulting the very sponsors who pay for his continued existence. Ironically, his image was heavily merchandised and he was the spokes-being for “New Coke” (nowadays known as “Coke II”)

After The Max Headroom Show was cancelled in the UK, US producers were eager to bring the concept to an American audience. However, instead of Max being a DJ, the producers decided to create a series around the concept of 20 Minutes Into the Future.

Max Headroom is set, naturally...

It is a world where there are a huge number of television stations, all vying for as big a slice of the rating pie as possible, keeping the masses as entertained so they stay docile (Now hang on!) while buying things their sponsors pay big money to advertise.

Frewer returns as Edison Carter, an investigative reporter for “Network 23″. Edison exposes social injustice on a daily basis on the Network 23 news, as well as his own show. His reports uncover a great deal and make many powerful entities nervous...yet Network 23 refuses to silence him (No, Network 23 isn’t morally better than the others; Edison’s broadcasts bring huge ratings (and huge ad dollars) so they give him a lot of leeway) Edison is constantly going out into the field to get his reports armed only with his video camera (and not even a cameraman for backup) In the pilot episode, Edison pissed off the wrong people and ran into a certain sign while escaping, which led to the chain of events that created Max.

Edison’s handler is Theora Jones (played by Amanda Pays, who would later play Tina McGee in the 90s version on The Flash.

Edison’s producer is Murray (not sure if that’s his first or last name), played by Jeffrey Tambor, who played the Director of the BPRD in Hellboy. Murray is constantly pushing Edison to get to the bottom of whatever story he’s chasing while trying to keep the Network execs off of Edison.

Speaking of Network execs...

The Chairman of the Network is Ben Cheviot. Unlike the rest of the Board, Cheviot tries to do the right thing, but ratings (and profits) are still a priority for him.

Bryce Lynch is a prodigy who is the head of R&D for Network 23 and the person responsible for creating Max after Edison’s accident.

The show tackles subject matter that is a cross between pure science fiction (advertisements that could make viewers explode) and totally plausible (terrorist organizations selling exclusive broadcast contracts to TV networks) to relevant even today (TV editing content to fit their narrative)

The highest form of spiral demonology knows no higher order structure anymore and borders liquefy to acid reality pixel mush. Playing with Babylonian druids is certainly fully illuminating - but also fraught with Faustian risks, it is a transgressive procedure, in the midst of the spiral dance floor. To be able to fully grasp this eons-old cycle, we have invited the archpopes - or rather - the primordial gods of all Past/Present & Future Spiral Revolutions to FLUCC: R-Zac aka Crystal Distortion & 69db, who with the legendary Spiral Tribe 23 Soundsystem laid the foundation for all varieties of the current TEKnoid interstellar time travel and thus both are also an elementary part of the contemporary Techno Memplex of this planet.

The first day of the two-day head worlds ceremony at FLUCC is entirely dedicated to the all-encompassing Mental Tribe Dancefloor Head Kino, we are here in the midst of the far-flung TEK-verse of introverted dance legs. For this, the spearhead of the domestic arch-magic of all surrounding spiral lands was invited: Shirin & Keton, Illtek, as well as Symbiotik Sound Crew from faraway Linz and of course Audiopirat.

The last duo LIVE performance of R-Zac in Vienna is already a while back - 2006 in the Arena - the more we are looking forward to their commitment to rewrite a piece of local event history at FLUCC. With R-Zac, the 2nd day of the Cardinal Sins Orgy leaves no genre dogma untouched and catapults us straight off the event horizon of the spiral galaxies we know. Basically, we’re talking about an improvised Babylonian Futura Demon Casino, and these elusive entities mostly reside in the haze of Post-Modern Limbo Portal Number 23. The credo here is: Sirius 23 Channeling is nowadays an evergreen, all the more it is nowadays a more than sought-after state of mind or memetic knowledge transfer on an interstellar level and therefore this two-day head trip can also only be advanced to the all-encompassing CARDINAL SIN for body & soul with the native rocks in the surf - namely - TingelTangelTek LIVE, SoDa, as well as Gesindel der Nacht.

A displaced woman named Jamila Al-Hisi, held captive inside Al-Shifa Hospital, has informed Al-Jazeera that occupation is reportedly raping and killing women inside Al-Shifa Hospital complex. They have burned entire families alive. They attempted to burn more people alive by setting the building in which they were held on fire. People inside the complex have been denied food and water for six days. Resistance News Network summarizes Jamila’s statement below:

🚨 Palestinian woman Jamila Al-Hisi, besieged in Al-Shifa Medical Complex, to Al-Jazeera:

Occupation forces raped women and then killed them.

We haven't found food or water for 6 days.

We appeal to the Red Cross to provide water for the children and the sick.

The occupation forced 65 families to leave the area around the Complex.

Occupation forces burned and killed entire families.

Occupation forces burned the building we were barricaded in.

We don’t even have water to break our fast and we don’t know where to go.

All of these atrocities are well-documented in genocides within Palestine and throughout the world. Rape in particular is used to traumatize their targets, fracture their identities, and destabilize families and communities, paralyzing their ability to support each other. Live burning is a method of mass murder intended to inflict severe terror or the surviving population, making them even more vulnerable.

The so-called international community is infamous for failing to stop these types of massacres. It seems no one with power has the will to intervene, and would rather say “never again” after the fact.

Please, spread the word and keep fighting for Gaza!

I know there’s no way for you to know for sure, but based on your Sunny knowledge, when do you think season 17 will air? I can’t wait!

Back in June, Glenn said Spring 2025 seems feasible for Season 17 airing, but it's really ultimately up to the Network. They will definitely wrap filming in December and we typically see FX air a season 2ish months after wrapping, so my best guess is March-ish?

(IMO they could push to air it by late January, to be closer to the Abbott crossover episode airing, but that seems highly unlikely... I'm very much hoping they don't hold the season until the 24-25 television cycle begins (June). I really don't think they would, but it is always a possibility)

“Welcome back to The Frank Program. I'm your host, Daryl, and today we're going to be frank with you. We’ve got Big Mike handling all the sliders and knobs…”

A heavily compressed, gravelly voice interrupted. “I would have thought you were the one handling ‘knobs’, son! Ha ha ha!”

“... and we have Frank here calling in from California. How’s the weather?”

“Colder than I’d’a expected. I’m bundled up here in my room.”

“That’s great. We’ve also got today’s guest. Would you like to introduce yourself to the audience?”

“Hm…” The guest pondered. “No.”

“That’s fine, I’ll be happy to. Mike, can you up the gain on his input?”

“Sure thing,” Mike replied. “I wouldn’t want to get on your bad side…”

“Thanks. Today’s guest is a longtime favorite of mine. You know him as the host of both Backstab Pantry and Stainless Steal, but to me he’ll always be the face of Chemistry Kitchen. Welcome to the show, Mr. Adam Braun!”

“Thank you, thank you,” Braun bowed. “I just hate to toot my own horn. Much better if you do it.”

“Ha!” Frank chuckled. “He loves tooting horns!”

Mike frowned. “Frankie, can you shut the hell up?”

Daryl’s face remained as still as stone. “Mr. Braun -”

“Call me Adam.”

“Adam, today’s episode is going to release on Christmas day, so I’d like to get the obvious question out of the way first: What tips do you have for our listeners at home who put on this podcast while they prepare dinner?”

“I’d probably tell your listeners that if they want to hear my opinion, they should try watching any number of Christmas themed episodes of Chemistry Kitchen or reading one of the companion cookbooks. However, when the question of safety is at hand, I’m happy to give away free advice to anyone who asks: have a fire extinguisher handy always. Not just for your bird, or roast, or hunk of porky goodness - God forbid - but also all those gosh-darn cheap lights strewn about the house. Electrical fires are no joke. Overcooked poultry is no picnic, but a house fire is a tragedy.”

“Yeesh.” Frank yawned. “This guy sounds like he wears a bowtie.”

Daryl reached around to the mixing board and muted Frank. “Sorry about him.”

“Is that the original host of this show?”

“That’s right.”

“I’ve heard rumors that he was a real piece of work. I guess they were right.”

“Hey,” Mike chimed in. “You know, Frank might not be the best host of all time or anything, but he built this podcast up from nothing. You gotta hand it to him for that. People like hearing what he’s got to say.”

“Mike,” Daryl glared at him. “Let’s not argue with our guest.”

“It’s Christmas, Daryl. You’re not gonna defend your dad?”

“There’s nothing to defend. Anyway, Adam, your fans all know you got your start in the production side of things, working behind the camera rather than in front of it. How much behind the scenes work did you continue doing as the series grew into itself?”

“That’s a good question. At first, it was a real rinky-dink operation. Just me and a couple other guys filming in our producer’s home kitchen. Back then, I developed all the recipes myself. But as the scale of our little show - including its budget and marketing - grew past my own limits, I started putting together a team. I’d say it was seventy-thirty how much I did per episode by then, much like the muscle-to-fat ratio of a good burger - and I was the fat. By the end of the show, the final season, I was so busy with other responsibilities that I was mostly just a host. But the team was solid. Their work was unmatched in quality.”

“Any chance of a comeback?”

“I’ll never say never, but I’m getting old. I come up with little ideas and put them out on my YouTube channel now and then, but you can consider me happily retired.”

“Psst… hey…” Mike tapped Daryl’s shoulder. “Your dad is pissed that you muted him.”

“Too bad.”

“He said it’s his show and he can kick you out if he’s not happy.”

“Ugh. Fine. Unmute him, then.”

Mike clicked the button and Frank’s voice began piping into everyone’s headphones again.

“... and another thing, where does this boy get off tellin’ m​e to shut my mouth? I wouldn’t even be here if he knew how to mind his damn business! ‘Merry Christmas!’ Whole lotta Merry Christmas around here, in the damn institution y’all threw me in! I don’t like lookin’ out at the ocean! It’s too damn big! And I…” Frank continued talking, rambling, complaining - whatever you want to call it.

Daryl covered his face.

Adam adjusted his bowtie. “I think I should get going.”

“Yeah, I can understand that.” Daryl leaned on his elbow, little life left in his eyes.

Frank’s diatribe was in one ear and out the other, but it banged pots and pans on the way through.

“This has been The Frank Program…”

“... ending the darn show while I’m talking! Who do you think you are?!? You little…”

“Thanks for letting us be frank with you. Merry Christmas.”
