All the women dressing up as handmaids tale characters probably haven’t even read the book or they would understand that the state of America is no where close to the dystopian society described by Atwood. They probably don’t even understand that the book was literally based on Islamic revolution Iran and that Iran today is far more reflective of the handmaids tale society in its treatment of women especially for that reason. It’s deeply insulting to see the oppression of women being used like this as a costume by women in privileged countries while women being oppressed in Islamic countries are literally having their voices taken away by extremists and their existence in public suppressed by Islamic regimes.
