How the DSMP became a devastating reality

yo, do you guys ever think about just how reflective that the events of the DreamSMP were of reality?? hear me out here:

• Wilbur sets off something innovative and quite literally revolutionary. In the end, he isn't quite as noble as he seems. the worst parts of him seep through the cracks and his image shatters, cutting himself and everyone around him.

• Tubbo eventually refuses to play the pawn, splitting off to purse the things he is truly passionate about

• Technoblade—always leagues ahead of everyone else, clearly on another level (oh gosh, i'm tearing up here)

• Dream's identity confuses everyone—is he good? is he bad? who is he? Has an alarming obsession with Tommy, and a sever case of main character syndrome

• Tommy—the main character in the end. slowly loosing the flamboyance and fire that once characterized him. always drawing the short straw. always left to pick up the broken pieces.

AU where Tommy gets stuck in a timeloop but he's like, not at all important. Could be a hero au, vampires, werewolves, royalty, just something. But he's not important, he's got no special powers or magic or anything. No connections, but he keeps waking up right before something bad happens, or maybe he doesn't even know the bad thing happens at first but it doesn't take long until he decides that stopping The Bad Thing from happening is probably what'll get him out.

So he finds the important people, Wilbur Soot, Technoblade and Philza Minecraft. He first figures out their schedules when he doesn't do anything then he starts popping up, getting to know them and trying to figure out what's going on with The Bad Thing and how to get them to stop it.

Over the loops he gets to know them well, and after awhile he gets sick of the loops, of them forgetting that they care about him. He stops bumping into them on accident. He stops slowly becoming their friends. He just finds them, and pulls them along to the events leading up to The Bad Thing. Whenever they try and get him to stop, to ask him what he's doing he'll pause for a second and tell them something very personal that he wouldn't know if he didn't know them well.

And he does that until The Bad Thing is stopped and the time loop ends. Tommy basically dragged SBI around, or he walked around knowing where everything was, what to do while they followed him to find out what the fuck a random teen was up to in their house. Getting yelled at every time they tried to intervene and then getting yelled at about a personal detail about their lives whenever they try to stop him from doing something or question if they could trust him.

And eventually it works. Tommy stops The Bad Thing. The day is saved and now he has to deal with the consequences of his actions. Skipping school, breaking into SBI's house/base/whatever, breaking several laws, and of course: telling SBI how he knows them so well when they don't know who he is.

I dunno just time loops and the horror of having to repeat, of trying to do thigns right over and over and create connections and memories hoping that that loop will be the one that sticks until those genuine connections become an obstacle, why talk to someone to get them to tell you something when you know it already? When you have a time limit. When everything will probably just fucking reset anyway so who fucking cares if you don't say good morning, your best friend who doesn't know your name will die and you have to stop it before they die in your arms or all alone or around strangers again.

I think I was missing the order of popular fics and also the level that wilbur played into it (i am late enough that I'm coming into this post-wilbur things and i will say that the level that guy steered the fandom seems a little unprecedented?? Fascinating). anyway thank you again!!!!

No worries! I got your question and also went ehehe at an opportunity to lay it all out, I love fandom analysis.

I don't think it might be possible to overstate how much sway Wilbur had during the height of the DSMP. He wrote the first scripted arc, which is the point where the DSMP first exploded in popularity, and was regarded as having the authoritative take on pretty much anything he wanted to weigh in on afterwards. He also wrote a very compelling character with a lot of room for analysis, so there were just a lot of people viewing things through the lens of his character— the wilburian take was ever-present. Tommyinnit was the most popular character I think it's safe to say, but his dynamic with Wilbur specifically was the most popular character dynamic to focus on, and his dynamic with Quackity was also very compelling and the first SBI dynamic to legalize shipping somewhat, so TNTduo was also at the top of the charts. It's harder to see it given today's landscape, but emerald duo (contains neither tommy nor wilbur) was like a distant fourth in popularity behind crimeboys, twinsduo, and bedrock bros. And Wilbur the CC was incredibly popular and good at holding a crowd, he could go live for the first time in 6 months at any hour he wanted to and get 40k people in stream for just chatting. The fandom has been through some SHIFTS in the last year.
