thinking thoughts (maybe porting a D&D character over) (various spoilers below)

My Saturday game is totally over, which is sad and ultimately ok, but I've fallen very deeply in love with the character I was playing. Her name is Viatrix and she is the saddest, most mysteriously damp, most Eeyore-like weirdo I've ever made. Give her some of your blood for arts and crafts, please. She's a lycanthrope blood cleric devoted to The Raven Queen. TRQ gave her order blood magic so that they could control their curse. Her order also uses the blood magic to hunt other monsters, other werewolves, demons, and so on and so forth.

So, she sort of overlaps in two ways with my existing FFXIV characters...

None is already the saddest creature in the whole wild world.

Odette is already heavily linked to death -- Much like The Raven Queen. Though, to be fair, Viatrix is much more focused on the blood part of TRQ's domain.

I'm not sure how 'big' a problem #1 is. And in transferring Viatrix to this world her backstory might change. They've both lost their wives but in very different ways. None is pragmatic, stoic, and a hermit whenever possible. Viatrix is a guilty and damp stray dog who stares at you unblinking while emitting a single note whine. You know?

#2 might be a moot point because there is no direct translation for TRQ into FFXIV. There is Nald'thal, of course, but I'm less worried about what deity she ends up worshipping (genuinely I think I could drop her worship aspect entirely since I have Odette already) and more worried about...

the werewolf thing. I know the 1st had the Shadow Keeper who was quite werewolf-y, no? And the FATE in Lakeland implies there were more than one like it. But I don't think I want her to be from the 1st's history, you know??? I could make her another one of None's adoptive children (Gerry, Odette, and now Viatrix)(although this is very big maybe) which would make her Shroud-base and I'm already bending lore all the time anyway so... Maybe Viatrix was a young woman swallowed by the greenwrath, twisted into a wolfish wildling, spit back out into None's lap at some point for some reason???? Table Top Viatrix wore veils and hoods and many layers. FFXIV she would 100% wear a mask to hide from both people and elementals. Sometimes she still transforms into that wolfish form and sprints around the shroud. I don't know what the trigger would be -- probably a sign her woodsin hasn't been cleansed. Maybe it's just taken root. I think her blood magic would have to be... idk, removed? It's so closely tied to her worship and since I'm already more than willing to drop that I think it's fair to drop the magic part as well. Her interest in blood can just be a mundane thing. (': I'm sure there are groups in lore that mess with blood but I don't know if I'd want her attached to any of them. Hm. Much to tumble.

I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.

I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:

Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)

Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)

Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often

Eat dessert first

Celebrate well, and often

Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)

Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.

Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate

Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)

Walk without having a specific destination or goal

Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.

I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.

sometimes i randomly remember how insane maggie stiefvater was for making ronan lynch—a man that can create reality—a man of god, when he himself is a god of a man. then to take this man and have him be not only in love with, but a literal soulmate of a man named adam. parrish. adam parrish. who, mind you, lives above ronan's very own place of worship. and is the namesake of the first of mankind that the bible says god made from the literal dust of the ground (adam parrish: comes from nothing, hair "dusty" in color) and appoints him to care for the garden of eden (adam parrish: sacrifices himself to ronan's sentient forest). then has adam viewing ronan as a god and ronan saying "maybe he dreamt (created)" adam???? like who just fucking writes that and goes about their life?

the thing that drives me sooo crazy about the jinx/isha/cait/vi confrontation is that for vi, it was a lose-lose situation. either caitlyn misses & accidentally hits isha (child witnesses enforcer violence), or caitlyn kills jinx in front of a child who cares for her (child STILL witnesses enforcer violence). Either situation parallels vi’s own past trauma. In that moment, it wasnt about jinx (at least not entirely). It was about vi’s catalyst for violent change about to be recreated and forced upon this child. Caitlyn said she understood how vi felt seeing her parents die, but demonstrated in this moment that she doesnt and literally CANT. caitlyn has never been on the other side or enforcer violence. the child didnt even compute to her—isha was just an obstacle to be avoided, not a person that will carry this experience forever. But vi’s been on the wrong end of a gun. She understood that no matter what, no matter who got hit, if she allowed caitlyn to shoot, vi would be recreating her own trauma. Columbo and the Knight (1984)

put me in the universe where Columbo ran through the 1980s and had a crossover episode with Knight Rider. I think they deserved it, and I am not just saying that because they're my two favorite Old Shows. @telebeast wrote a little fanfic blurb about it and I HAD to visualize it into a comic (which is also the longest comic I have finished thus far at five pages...), so writing credit goes to them.

Man is it just me or are a lot of TV shows nowadays are written to have big emotional episodes in scenes with very little build up.

unlike many people, i think that scene is so beautiful and meaningful. i wanna talk about this scene from vi’s perspective, and more specifically about touch and her past with physical violence.

all she's ever known is pain, violence and physical abuse. it's how she copes and what she'd had to live with her whole life: since she was a child, to protect powder and the others, being in prison for 7 years and getting beat up, using her fists in every fight, getting punched by cait, then jinx (literally in the scene before this one) becoming a pit fighter and using all she knows to cope with any emotion she has

Vi needed, deserved that closeness, that intimacy, a touch that isnt a violent one, a form of trust and warmth that she has never gotten, especially after everything physically abusive that she went through until now, she's finally allowed and able to feel loved and cared for.

and cait didn't apologize for hurting vi the way that she did, but i believe that scene was a step towards forgiveness and redemption. it's about second chances and saving their relationship from the curse it was in, the oil and water curse.
