Kicking off his shoes and dropping his bag by the door, Frank raised a brow in question as he looked out through the doorway to the kitchen and the rest of the house. From what he could see, most of the lights were off, a strange sight he couldn't remember the last time he had come home to. "Honey?" he called out, his worry only growing as he received no response.
Making his way through the house, he scanned each room for you. Through the kitchen, then the living room, and then down the hallway. When he could finally see the faint glow of light coming out from underneath your shared bedroom door, he sighed a bit in relief.
Pausing to knock, he called out again for you, "Sweetheart? You in there?"
Curled up on the maroon loveseat over in the reading corner, you raised your head weakly off your pillow for only a moment. When you couldn't manage a response, the door opened slowly, revealing a slightly panicked-looking Frank. At the sight of you wrapped up under a blanket in the fetal position, your eyes still puffy from apparent tears, the man instantly rushed over to you, crouching down to sit on the floor beside the couch to bring you face to face.
"Honey, honey, hey-" he fussed over you gently, reaching out a hand to brush back your hair, "what's going on, y/n? You look like you've been crying."
Nodding, you scooted forward a bit to lean your head on your daddy's shoulder, tucking your face into the side of his neck as he hummed, "Hey honeybee, c'mere." Slowly wrapping his arms around you, he carefully collected you off the couch, standing up to take your previous place with you now in his lap as he cradled you. "Shhh, it's okay," he murmured, "I've got you, sweetheart. Can you tell me what's goin' on, pumpkin? Hmm? Did something happen?"
Not able to face him to give him an answer, you once again tucked your head away into his shirt to hide your face, reaching a hand out to point over in the direction of the end table that sat to the side of the couch. Following your gesture with his gaze, Frank's eyes landed on your laptop that still sat open, the screen having dimmed from sitting untouched for too long. Reaching out a hand, he picked it up, pulling it over to set it on top of your legs as he wiggled the mouse.
As the screen lit up, a knowing look formed on the man's face. Reading over the small table displayed in the opened window, he found the dreaded D score that he could guess brought on your pitiful state. "Oh bubba..." his voice trailed off sympathetically as his free hand came up to rub your back. Looking down at you as you hid away in shame, Frank's face softened. "Sweet girl, can you come out and talk to me?" Feeling a fresh round of tears coming on at the tenderness of your daddy's voice, you swallowed hard, clinging to the safety the darkness of his (now damp) button-down provided. "C'mon, honey. You're okay, just wanna help you feel better, honeybee."
Sniffling, it took everything in you to finally find your voice; it trembled as you spoke. "I-I'm sorry, Daddy."
"What? What are you saying sorry for, sweetheart?" the man soothed as he continued to run his hand up and down your back over your blanket.
"Kn-know it's a bad score, Daddy. Know I did a b-bad job. Didn't mean to, tried really h-hard and... studied a lot but... just... c-can't do math, Daddy. 'm no good at it," you whimpered.
"No baby, hey," Frank shook his head as he pulled back from you slightly, a gentle hand coming up to hold your cheek to prevent you from hiding away again. "Look at me, bubba. C'mon, this is important." Your eyes remained lowered, forcing him to tilt your chin up ever so slightly to finally catch your gaze. "Baby," he breathed, his eyes so full of love and sincerity. "You did not do a bad job. You did your best," he reminded you. "I know you did, honey. I know how hard you studied, how much you did to prepare. You worked so hard. And I'm so proud of you, y/n. Daddy's so proud of you."
"But..." you protested softly, bottom lip starting to wobble again.
Shaking his head, Frank's voice was the gentlest thing you'd ever heard as he started speaking again before you could finish your thought. "No, sweet girl. No 'but's, Daddy is always proud of you when you do your best. And you can do math, baby. You've been doing this math all semester; it was just one hard test. Now it'll be a new unit, with new things to learn. And if you want, Daddy can help you study and get ready for your next test, okay? We'll both do our best, bubba. I'm sure with the two of us putting our brains together, we can get your grade up with the next exam."
Bringing a hand up to rub at your eyes, you nodded, the promise of having your daddy's help on the next unit making you feel slightly more optimistic about continuing through the semester. "Still think I'm smart?" you asked weakly, a tinge of heartbreak appearing on Frank's face as he stroked your cheek softly.
"Of course I do," he whispered, thumbing away at a few stray tears as they dropped down from the corners of your eyes. "Think you're the smartest cookie I know, baby. But you know what else I think? Something way more important than just being smart?"
"Hm?" you hummed curiously, a genuine smile forming on the man's face as he continued.
"I think you're kind. I think you're loving. I think you're so hard-working, so dedicated. I think you're clever, and funny, and a wonderful friend. I think you've got the biggest, bravest heart. Along with your beautiful mind. Of course I think you're smart, y/n; I think you're brilliant in every possible way. But I think you're more than that too, honey. I think you're more than some silly test score; that's no way to measure how smart you are, anyway. Remember what I told you about those damn SAT's?"
That made you giggle a bit as you nodded. Having been a former college professor, Frank surely had firmly established opinions on standardized testing in the country at large, though a lot of times his views on assessment styles could also be shrunk down and applied to things like the math exam just as easily. "They're a scam, Daddy. They don't measure anything important," you recited what you could remember.
"That's right, baby," he affirmed proudly, earning another giggle from you as he nodded with a mock-serious looking face. "A lot of times tests aren't a great way to measure smartness. I know you were understanding the concepts when you were studying, baby. You did such a good job when you showed me all those problems you did."
"The questions were phrased funny," you admitted. "I lost a lot of points because I interpreted them wrong."
"See? You can't beat yourself up for it, baby. I won't let you," he declared.
"Okay Daddy," you hummed, finally feeling a little more at peace with the whole situation as you wrapped your arms around him tightly, giving him a squeeze. "No more beating myself up, I promise."
"Good," Frank smiled gently at you, leaning down to kiss the top of your head. "No one gets to be mean to my honeybee, not on my watch."

There is a theory that the way children play serves as a means to simulate and prepare them for the tasks they'll take on as adults. So for all the narrative weight both Jinx and the story give the boxing machine at the arcade it would never have prepared her or the kids to take on Piltover.
What are the two things that Piltovans excel at over their Zaunite counterparts to keep the hierarchy? Weapons and technological development.
When you look at the way Piltovans invest in their children, they don't prioritize hand to hand/melee combat training. Piltovans focus on giving their children experiences in handling firearms, a pursuit that is both leisure sport for the wealthy and a key offense against dissenting Zaunites.
And from the show notes even Jayce, whose family occupies the upper middle class, was sent on educational excursions across Runeterra to explore the world and learn what it had to offer. Without Jayce's education abroad he would never have been inspired to pursue the concept hextech.
It's no wonder that the two figures that are set to be Piltover's biggest threats from Zaun are Jinx and Viktor, becasue they engaged in the same kinds of games and activities as their Piltovan counterparts.
Jinx didn't have an entire forest preserved to help her practice her sharpshooting like the high houses of Piltover, but she did excel in the few games at The Rift (the arcade) that built on her talents. She's the only Zaunite thus far who's long distance offensive is a strong counter to Piltover's forces.
Viktor couldn't travel the world like Jayce did, but for better or worse he managed to stumble into an opportunity to get real opportunity in research not offered to his peers through Singed. It was through that experience that Viktor knew to turn to Singed when he was at the end of his rope, and the consequences of that will be fully realized in season 2.
Ironically, the kind of skill the boxing game champions is only good for keeping other Zaunites in line. Vander's days of fighting Piltover were way behind him when we first met him, and Vi spends season 1 primarily fighting other Zaunites. It's no surprise the Zaunites who embody the old ideal of strength in Zaun that the game portrays, Vi and Vander, are largely at the mercy of Piltover and end up collaborating with them to avoid further harm.
Zaun's future as an independent city-state couldn't happen if they stuck to their old ideals. The people who stand a chance against Piltover are the ones that not only succeed but excel at playing Piltover's games against them.
#arcane#arcane meta#jinx arcane#vi arcane#caitlyn kiramman#jayce talis#viktor arcane#i also imagine silco heavily invested in jinx's technical education once he took her in#vander ensured the kids were warm safe and loved but he wasn't planning on advancing them or zaun in anyway like silco was#i guess there's also a parenting metaphor in here about the way a parent can harm their children based from their own trauma and ambition#i also think it's interesting that the boxing game kept score for the players and immediately ranked them for all to see#but the shooting game didn't do that instead players had to manually track their own score against each other#who knows how many kids in zaun actually know math that well to keep up with the game and their competitors#the boxing game also has more space in the arcade and is more centrally positioned for other people to view and admire the plaayers#there's more incentive in zaun for kids to play the boxing game rather than shoot

Mina: "I screamed when live ammunition pierced through the glass. I suppose I am a coward. Makes sense they don't want my cowardliness around."
Also Mina, after reading that Jonathan screamed and ran when the vampires loomed over him: "He's so brave to have endured this despite how scary it was"
Mina: "I'm such a coward for screaming aloud over a measly little gunshot!"
Jonathan: "Then you think I'm a coward for screaming at the Weird Sisters?" 🥺
Mina: "No, never! How could anyone think so pitilessly of someone in fear for their life?"
Jonathan: :3
Mina: "...Damn it, you tricked me into improving my self-esteem again."
Jonathan: "And I'll do it again <3"

pearl saying the other day that she doesn't care about being on the leaderboard and skizz saying he doesn't believe her was interesting to me bc I believe pearl and I find it really relatable. Of course it looks like she's a massive sweat from the outside and of course she does care about doing well so that assumption isn't even entirely wrong it's just that.
I think Pearl is motivated by scores, of course she wants to get a good score of course she cares, but she doesn't necessarily care about the Highscore
She's motivated by knowing she can still do better and do more. She's not motivated by someone else doing better, otherwise she'd have stopped playing hungry hermits already since no one is beating her scores anyway. But she wants to get to day 8, she wants to find the even more ideal way to play, she sees what she can improve and so she has fun with consistently improving it.
There's a reason pearl, out of everyone, focused on the solving all the secrets part of decked out 2 rather than on winning the competitive part of it. Bc at a certain point there is an ideal strategy to maximising the score you get out of your run, but to complete the game you need to still keep looking and keep exploring and doing new things
I relate to that, I'm a completionist at heart, I want to find all the secrets! I want to find the ideal way to do the thing! But I don't like grinding just for grinding's sake, I would never have the motivation to, idk, run frogger the amount of times jevin has.
Pearl isn't on all the scoreboards bc she'll grind for ages to get the highscore, she's just enjoying the games and is also just, y'know. Good at them
Because she's a gamer
#hermitcraft#pearlescentmoon#like if I played hungry hermits I'd care a lot more about ''can I get to day 8'' than ''do I have the highscore''#And I think pearl's the same way#I think if she gets to the point where she always gets to day 8 she'll probably play much less#Bc then there's no new things anymore#Even if other ppl beat her scores#(though I think tango will change enough stuff around regularly to keep her hooked for a while lol)

i think gamers dismissed the notion of keeping score in non-arcadey titles too easily i think. some games are a lot funner if you try to play them with score in mind
#like how do you get a high score in the classic sonic games?#get a lot of rings. keep them to the end of the level. and beat it fast as fuck for a good time bonus#that's a fun way to play the game!!!!#honestly the special stages in sonic 1 feel like they play into encouraging that too#keep enough rings and you get to play a little bonus stage at the end of the level. to get a little doodad#that only really serves to increase your score#and also give you a nicer ending cutscene#sonic 2 giving you an opportunity to play the bonus stages at every checkpoint is nice in theory#gives you more chances to do it per level#still rewards you for keeping your rings#but then after you leave the special stage all your rings are gone D:#and also it's much more of a pace breaker to do it in the middle of a level rather than inbetween...#still i understand it in theory#then sonic 3 made it so you don't *have* to keep your rings. you just have to find a giant ring#which makes sense for that game's more exploration focused level design and play style#y'know since it introduced knuckles and everything#lot to think about game design-wise :>

I feel like y’all are not understanding the role of incest in gothic media like crimson peak
I keep seeing stuff like oh Lucille was just evil and abusive and Thomas is a poor little meow meow
They BOTH were horribly abused and isolated which led to the horror of the film, their incestuous relationship and murdering
Like the only reason Thomas even grew and changed was because he experienced a healthy love through Edith for the first time
She never got that and her obsession with him (which is super tied to her idea of safety and love and her FEAR) ultimately led to both of their deaths but this is a direct result the abuse she experienced
#this is reductionist but you see my point#she definitely has more of a predilection for killing than him but that also ties to their abuse#she took the brunt of the physical abuse and reacted with violence in the end#her violence is what protected her so yeah she’s more inclined to use it and doesn’t get why he won’t or is reluctant#crimson peak#incenst in gothic stories is there because it’s disturbing#posting this at 2am after watching it for the first time tonight and getting annoyed at some posts in the tag and YouTube ‘analysis’ videos#one video said they love gothic movies and loved this and only docked the score because they didn’t have to be siblings#like incest is a classic gothic theme idk what to tell you#my posts#posting when no one will see lmaoo

Mini DID book review: One Of Us Knows: a thriller
Author: Alyssa Cole
Publication date: 2024
Diagnosis of DID? Yes, the system has known for a while
Fiction of nonfiction: fiction
Is the person with DID portrayed as evil? Complicated but ultimately no; its one of the major plot points
Major trigger warnings:
death (fighting, blood, some gore but its not described much)
implied sexual assault (nothing described)
Self harm
Misogyny(major plot point)
Abelism
Racism (major plot point also)
Stalking
Kidnapping/mishandled foster care
Dormancy of parts (major plot point)
Parts being kidnapped/speculated to be killed off (major plot point)
Rituals taking place (not religious but has to do with everything on this list)
Covid being a thing(major plot point in the first part, lots of anxiety about covid)
Ratings to how I feel personally
Triggering(0 is nothing at all, 10 is could not handle reading this): 4-5 (not a gentle book but not gratuitous
System dynamics(0 is this is bizarrely off, 10 is holy shit this is a book about me): 7-8 (the conflict between parts is very well written, and so is the understanding of how deep the relationships go)
Switching(0 is doesnt work like this, 10 is this is a book about me): 4? (Nearly all of the switches are blackouts)
System communication(0 is never experienced this, 10 is this is a book about me): 8-9 (we talk to eachother like this a lot)
Inner world dynamics(0 is never experienced this, 10 is this is a book about me): 7 (theres a lot of the inner world, like half the chapters happen inside! However the physics of it were a little too realistic at times to what could happen with me, like i dont have to walk or run to get places personally)
Comorbidity with other disorders(mental or physical)(0 is there are none, 10 is i experience all of this): 5 (there is no physical ailments that come with having DID in this book, which isnt a necessity but many people who do have it also have disabilities so it feels bizzare when there are none. Theres anxiety, depression and faint mentions of disordered eating in this book)
Brief thoughts on this book:
The BadDay system(first book ive read where the system has a system name) has been well-established for many years by now, knowing about their DID, communicating with their others for some time.
The host turned persecutor has been dormant for 6 years now, missing out on covid, while the rest of the system had been active online and functioning in lockdown. Now Ken(the persecutor) is back, with the mysterious disapearence of the previous host and caretaker, Della. All eyes are on Ken wondering what the fuck happened and nobody knows how they landed a job as a caretaker of a mysterious castle on an island, that just happens to be the exact same castle from their inner world.
Mystery and thrilling things ensue as Ken goes through the motions of coming out of dormancy and no parts wanting them there, a blossoming romance with an outsider and a complicated romance on the inside too, all tied together neatly with the strange happenings on the island and the trust that owns it.
I don’t really know how to review for a thriller book, because I don’t tend to read thrillers. But the mysteries were mysterious to even me, who can see where plots are going with DID books typically. And the thrills were thrilling. I couldn’t put the book down, I kept wanting to sink in more and more
I was exceptionally pleased that the author didn’t play safe with the DID as some authors tend to when they’re writing something with modern understanding. There wasnt so much shameful secrecy around the disorder, and the questions and impacts were hard-hitting as she delved into things that I’d be worried about posting about myself. Like the dormancies impacting other parts, parts not wanting the host around. Romance and sexuality between parts. The unsavory and the honest, but also the depth of how much each of them mattered in the system and how much they cared for eachother. It was really satisfying to read! The inclusion of how social media effects people with DID nowadays was really nice to include too, and again, I haven’t yet seen any other media to employ the use of system names like how many do in social media now.
I also really really love that the story was just as much the inner world as it was the outer, as most books have the happenings between parts more hidden.. Having the two stories run side by side makes it feel like this characters life is their DID, as it often is for many of us. Idk I’m jazzed about this, this is what I wanted with DID in media. The DID actually mattering as more than a plot device
The only thing I can really fault it on is the constant blackout with switches. But to be fair, this is implied not to be their normal, and ethe events of this book are extremely high-stress situations, so I appreciate that the weight of that is stressed rather than it being another case of an author just not having personal experience enough to know. (She doesnt have the experience to know, but this was a neat way to bridge the gap)
Overall a great book. Not a fluffy one, and since the main plot revolves around the potential of the main character being the DID Killer, inside and out. So please tread carefully if the questioning of such things is hard for you. And also a thriller, so there are thriller things like violence and tension and things outside of a normal slice of life
Would I recommend someone with DID read this? YES! I do feel like this was written with a lot of care for people with DID
#bunnidid reviews#one of us knows#alyssa cole#dissociative identity disorder#did in media#actuallydid#complex dissociative disorder#otherwise specified dissociative disorder#cdd system#did system#cdd media#did media#i just finished this like an hour or two ago pls enjoy my new review style#do u like my new reviewing style? writing out the entirity of the media is what puts me off reviewing#it just snowballed so i could explain myself more and more#and also i hope the relatability scores are okay#obvs theres more aspects to DID than that but those are just what i could come up with on a whime

(The Promised Neverland Art Book World)
Ah yes, one of my favorite genres of baby full score trio pictures: Isabella being openly affectionate toward Emma and Norman in front of Ray while being hands off with him.
(Chapter 2 | Chapter 37 | Chapter 165 | Chapter 170 | Chapter 177)
#and by favorite I mean “I am in physical agony. I am violently sobbing. I am eating the dry wall.”#Isabella before Ray's sixth birthday: man what is up with this kid he's more prickly than a porcupine (not even touching on his hair)#Isabella on January 15‚ 2040: ah.#The Promised Neverland#Yakusoku no Neverland#TPN#YnN#The Promised Neverland Art Book World#FSS Chatter#Full Score Trio#TPN Isabella#TPN Emma#TPN Norman#TPN Ray#Isabella and Ray's Incredibly Fraught and Complicated Relationship Tag#Pre-Canon#Introduction Arc#TPN 002#Escape Arc#TPN 037#Return to Grace Field Arc#TPN 165#TPN 170#TPN 177#also with Norman's stark black & white morality this is why his reaction to Isabella's betrayal is so volatile#and why I think it's a shame his relationship with her gets the least amount of focus#especially when you think of their conversation on the way to the gate#“Hey‚ Mom‚ are you happy?” / “Yes. Yes‚ I am. After all‚ I was able to meet you.”#absolutely fucking wrecks me every time#the layers. 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭 𝘢 𝘺 𝘦 𝘳 𝘴.
