Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #35

President Biden and Vice-President Harris announced new actions to curb gun violence at the one year anniversary of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The Office is the first ever White House office to deal with the issue of guns and has been overseen by the Vice-President. President Biden signed a new Executive Order aimed at combatting the emerging threat of machinegun conversion devices. These devices allow the conversion of semi-automatic firearms to a rate of fire that can match military machineguns, up to 20 bullets in one second. The EO also targets the threat of 3-D printed guns. The EO also addresses active schooler drills at schools. While almost every school conducts them there is little uniformity in how they are carried out, and no consensus on the most effective version of a drill. President Biden's EO directions the development of a research based active shooter drills, which maximize both student physical and mental safety.

President Biden celebrated the one year anniversary of the American Climate Corps and announced new Climate Corp programs. The Climate Corps has seen 15,000 young people connected to well paid jobs in clean energy and climate resilience jobs across America. The EPA and AmeriCorps announced a new Environmental Justice Climate Corps program which will connect 250 American Climate Corps members with local communities and over the next 3 help them achieve environmental justice projects. In addition HUD announced it will be the 8th federal agency to partner with the Climate Corp, opening the door to its involvement in Housing. Since its launch the American Climate Corp has inspired 14 states to launch their own state level version of the program, most recently just this week the New Jersey Climate Corps.

The Biden-Harris Administration announced that 4.2 million small business owners and self-employed people get their health insurance through the ACA marketplace. Up from 1.4 million ten years ago when President Obama and then Vice-President Biden rolled out the marketplaces. The self-employed are 3 times as likely as other Americans to use the marketplaces for their insurance, one out of every 5 getting coverage there. The ACA passed by President Obama, defended and expanded by President Biden, has freed millions of Americans to start their own businesses without fear of losing health coverage for them and their families.

The Departments of Transportation and Labor pressed freight railroad companies to close the gap and offer paid sick time to all their employees. Since 2022 under President Biden's leadership the number of Class I freight railroad employees who have access to paid sick days increased from 5% to 90%. Now the Biden-Harris Administration is pushing to finish the job and get coverage to the last 10%.

The EPA announced $965 million to help school districts buy clean energy buses. This comes on top of the 3 billion the EPA has already spent to bring clean energy buses to America's schools. So far the EPA has helped replace 8,700 school buses, across 1,300 school districts in all 50 states, DC, tribal nations, and US Territories. 95% of these buses are zero-emission, battery-electric. The clean bus program is responsible for over 2/3rds of the electric school buses on the road today.

The Biden-Harris Administration took another step forward in its historic efforts to protect the Colorado River System by signing 5 water conservation agreements with local water authorities in California and Arizona. The two short term agreements will conserve over 717,000 acre-feet of water by 2026. Collectively adding 10 feet to Lake Mead’s elevation by 2026. The Colorado River Basin provides water for more than 40 million people and fuels hydropower resources in seven U.S. states.

The Department of The Interior announced $254 million to help support local parks, the largest such investment in history. The money will go to 54 projects across 24 states hoping to redevelopment or create new parks.

HHS announced $1.5 billion to help combat opioid addiction and prevent opioid overdose deaths. The money will support state and tribal governments and help pay for mobile clinics, naloxone kits, and treatment centers. This comes as nationwide overdose rates drop for the first time since 2020, thanks to strong investment in harm reduction efforts by the Biden-Harris team.

The Department of Agriculture announced it'll spend $466.5 million in food assistance and development worldwide this year. Through its McGovern-Dole Program, the United States is the largest donor to global school feeding programs. The USDA will help feed 1.2 million children in Angola, Bangladesh, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Guinea-Bissau, Laos, Malawi and Rwanda. Through its Food for Progress the USDA will help support 200,000 farmers in Benin, Cambodia, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Tunisia shift to climate-smart agriculture boosting food security in those nations and the wider region.

At a meeting at the UN First Lady Jill Biden announced a partnership between USAID and UNICEF to end childhood exposer to lead worldwide. Lead exposure kills 1.5 million people each year, mostly in the developing world.

The Senate approved the appointment of Byron Conway to a federal judgeship in Wisconsin. This makes the 213th federal judge that President Biden has appointed.

Why are there Palestinian refugees?

In the months before the British abandoned its mandate & Israel declared independence, civil war raged as Arab factions tried to prevent the Jewish state from being born.

Of course, had the Arabs agreed to the UN's partition plan, they would have had yet another state & there would have been no war in 1948. 

But their goal was not another Arab state; it was to ensure there would be no Jewish state. 

Meanwhile, 5 #Arab armies amassed on the borders & waited for the British to leave so they could push the Jews into the #Mediterranean Sea.

As Secretary-General of the Arab League Azzam Pasha put it on the day of the Arab #invasion: 

"This will be a war of extermination & momentous massacre, which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades."

Or as the then war #criminal & fugitive #Nazi Grand Mufti Amin al-Husseini put it during the invasion:

"Murder the #Jews. Murder them all!"

But before the invasion began, & starting as early as Dec 1947, Arab officers began ordering Arab residents of specific villages to flee. 

Their reasoning? Arab citizens not involved in active fighting could only: (1) "treacherously" abide the creation of a the Jewish state &/or even become citizens of same; or (2) be in the way of Arab #military deployments & potentially get caught in the crossfire.

And so, for example, on this day (March 8) in 1948, the Arab Higher Committee ordered all Arab women, children & elderly to leave Jerusalem. The order continued, "Any opposition to this order ... is an obstacle to the holy war ... & will hamper the operations of the fighters in these districts.” 

In fact, the Arab Higher Committee ordered the evacuation of dozens of Arab villages between April & July of 1948 (see photo of Arab citizens fleeing below).

Meanwhile, on April 19, 1948, Jewish forces secured Tiberias, which had a population of ~6,000 #Arabs - all of whom chose to leave. In fact, they left under British military supervision.

The Jewish Community Council immediately issued a statement regarding Tiberias' Arabs: 

"We did not dispossess them; they themselves chose this course ... Let no citizen touch their property."

At around this same time, in early & mid-April of 1948, an Arab faction led by Fawzi al-Qawukji was attacking Haifa & attempting to take the city. Then, rumors spread among Haifa's Arab community that Arab air forces were about to bomb the city & ~25,000 of Haifa's Arabs fled.

As U.S. Consul-General in Haifa Aubrey Lippincott noted on April 22, 1948: "local mufti-dominated Arab leaders ... [urged] all Arabs to leave the city, & large numbers did so."

On April 23, 1948, however, #Jewish forces fought back the Arab attack & retook Haifa.

Three days later, on April 26, 1948, a British police report from Haifa noted: 

"[E]very effort is being made by the Jews to persuade the Arab populace to stay and carry on with their normal lives, to get their shops and businesses open and to be assured that their lives and interests will be safe."

What were some of those "efforts?"

Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, sent future Prime Minister Golda Meir to Haifa with the direct instructions to "persuade the Arabs to stay." 

Ms. Meir was unsuccessful, however, as Haifa's Arabs told her they feared that if they stayed, they would be branded "#traitors." 

And so, another ~25,000 of Haifa's Arabs fled. 

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but despite facts on the ground, Arab leaders at the #UN began demanding the end to a fake "#massacre." 

Specifically, #Syria's UN Ambassador Faris al-Kouri, said the Jewish victory at Haifa was a "massacre" that provided "evidence that the '#Zionist program' is to annihilate Arabs within the Jewish state if partition is effected."

The #British were still on the ground, however, & the British Ambassador to the UN, Sir Alexander Cadogan, told the UN the very next day both that the fighting in Haifa had only begun as a result of "continuous attacks by Arabs against Jews" & that the "reports of massacres & deportations [were] erroneous." 

Meanwhile, after Israel declared its independence & was invaded by five Arab armies, the newly established #IDF issued an Order on July 6, 1948, making it clear that non-combatant Arab civilians were not to be harassed or expelled, nor their villages touched. 

But the Arabs were being given a very different message.

#Iraqi #PrimeMinister Nuri Said announced:

"We will smash the country with our guns & obliterate every place the Jews seek shelter in. The Arabs should conduct their wives & children to safe areas until the fighting has died down."

This used to be known. In fact, Arab leaders for years after the war had no qualms about repeating it.

For example, Syrian Prime Minister Haled al Azm later wrote:

"Since 1948, we have been demanding the return of the #refugees to their homes. But we ourselves are the ones who encouraged them to leave. Only a few months separated our call to them to leave & our appeal to the UN to resolve on their return."

Similarly, #Jordan's King Abdullah wrote: 

"The tragedy of the #Palestinians was that most of their leaders had paralyzed them with false & unsubstantiated promises that they were not alone; that 80 million Arabs & 400 million #Muslims would instantly & miraculously come to their rescue."

Similarly, Edward Atiyah, Secretary of the Arab League Office in #London wrote: 

"This wholesale #exodus was due partly to the belief of the Arabs, encouraged by the boastings of an unrealistic #Arabic press & the irresponsible utterances of some of the Arab leaders that it could be only a matter of weeks before the Jews were defeated by the armies of the Arab States & the #Palestinian Arabs enabled to re­enter & retake possession of their country.”

Even as the war still raged on Aug 16, 1948, the Arab #Greek Orthodox Catholic Bishop of the Galilee told #Beirut newspaper Sada al-Janub: 

“The refugees were confident their absence would not last long, & that they would return within a week or two ... Their leaders had promised them that the Arab Armies would crush the ’Zionist gangs’ very quickly & that there was no need for panic or fear of a long exile.”

A few months later, on Feb 19, 1949, the Jordanian newspaper Filastin confirmed: 

"The Arab States encouraged the Palestine Arabs to leave their homes temporarily in order to be out of the way of the Arab invasion armies."

Even many of the Palestinian Arab refugees themselves admitted their reasons for leaving.

For example, on June 8, 1951, Habib Issa admitted to #NewYork Lebanese newspaper Al Hoda:

"Azzam Pasha assured the Arab peoples that the #occupation of Palestine & #TelAviv would be ... simple ... He pointed out that they were already on the frontiers & that all the millions the Jews had spent on land & economic development would be easy booty, for it would be a simple matter to throw Jews into the Mediterranean ... Arabs of Palestine [were told] to leave their land, homes & property & to stay temporarily in neighboring fraternal states, lest the guns of the invading Arab armies mow them down.”

Similarly, Asmaa Jabir Balasimah recalled being told by Arab leaders to "evacuate the village & return after the battle is over," & that she & others in her village left all their possessions behind "based on the assumption that we would return after a few hours." 

Again, however (& most importantly), had the Arabs agreed to Partition or even agreed to negotiate different borders with Zionist leaders who begged Azzam Pasha to make any counteroffer instead of invading with #genocidal intent, there would never have been a single Palestinian #refugee.

Personal history 

Cerra was born on Corellia, the daughter of Lorn and Vianne Kilian. Vianne, her mother, had joined the Corellian Military Defense force as a mechanic, as it was one of the only avenues to escape the Corellian underworld slums where she was born. She eventually married Lorn, whose family had a longstanding tradition of service in the CMDF. 

Cerra joined the CMDF at the age of sixteen, serving as a supply officer for ten years before the outbreak of the Clone Wars. At that time, the CMDF was absorbed into the Grand Army of the Republic, and Cerra was assigned to the 501st Legion, serving under General Anakin Skywalker. While serving as supply officer on the Resolute, Cerra became friends with Captain Rex, Jesse, and Kix, along with many other clones in the 501st and beyond. 

It is also where she first met Fives, who visited the supply office weekly to submit requests for candy. Every single request was denied, and eventually, Cerra ordered a crate of sweets to be delivered with her personal supplies, then passed it on to Fives, who distributed it to the entire battalion. She never told Fives that she’d paid for it, but he figured it out (of course). After the Battle of Kamino, Fives stopped by the supply office one last time before he shipped out for ARC training. That was the first time Cerra kissed him.

When the Resolute was destroyed at the Battle of Sullust, Cerra was on the bridge. She helped as many wounded as she could into the escape pods, including Admiral Wullf Yularen as well as several clones. She was on her way to her own escape pod when she was caught in an explosion and hit in the leg by shrapnel. A shiny she’d helped into a different escape pod that was at maximum capacity jumped out and dragged her inside, then launched the pod, staying behind on the Resolute and sacrificing his life to save her. She never knew who he was, so she had a blank Phase 2 helmet added to the tattoo sleeve on her left arm when she’d recovered from her injuries.

After Sullust, Cerra was reassigned to a different unit, serving on the Ro-ti-Mundi until the Battle of Coruscant. She stayed in touch with her friends in the 501st, taking every opportunity to spend time with them whenever leave schedules permitted. In particular, she and Fives commed each other as frequently as possible, though his ARC duties prevented them from seeing each other again until just after his mission to Lola Sayu, where Echo was presumed dead. At that point, Fives and Cerra began a relationship.

The Battle of Umbara was the turning point for the pair. The treachery of Pong Krell shook Fives’s faith in the Jedi as well as the Republic, and he told Cerra that their lives were too short and too uncertain not to seize their chance at happiness while they could. He asked her to marry him, proposing with a ring he’d carved out of plastoid armor. Despite the ban on clone marriages, Cerra didn’t hesitate, and the two married in secret. When she met Tup after Umbara, she forged a close bond with him and quickly came to see him as a younger brother. He was the only witness to Fives and Cerra’s marriage, and the only person who ever knew about it.

And then came the Battle of Ringo Vinda. 

In the months following Fives and Tup’s deaths, Cerra threw herself into working with Kix to try to discover what had happened. They were close to a breakthrough when Kix disappeared. Utterly disillusioned, with her faith in the Republic and the GAR shattered, Cerra abandoned her post following the Battle of Coruscant.

Her family did not understand. Her parents felt that she had disgraced the family by deserting, and after a disastrous visit home to Corellia, Cerra returned to Coruscant and disappeared into the underworld.

Until one day, several weeks after the fall of the Republic, Rex knocked on her door.

Personality

Fiercely loyal, sarcastic, competent (with a healthy dose of imposter syndrome), protective to a fault. Once Cerra decides she likes someone, she adopts them. They’re hers now. She's keeping them. And she’ll make sure everybody else in the group is nice to them, too—or else. Despite being an only child, she has strong older sister energy, which occasionally causes her to clash with the people she cares about.

She is pathologically opposed to displaying negative emotions in a healthy way; if she’s feeling anger or grief, she’s likely to shut down or hide rather than talk about it. After Fives’s death, she became withdrawn and reticent, not even trusting her closest friends with all of her secrets. But underneath her durasteel-reinforced-with-beskar walls, the same fierce, loyal heart still beats.

The number of wounded due to the Russian drone attack in Kyiv has increased to 2, - Kyiv City Military Administration

The consequences of the Russian drone attack have already been recorded in 6 districts of Kyiv.

The [Igbo] women's war began in 1929 in a place called Oloko. The British had recently introduced a system of taxing men and had decided that in order to assess the taxable wealth of all the people, it would be necessary to count women, children, and domestic animals. When Okugo, the chief of Oloko, attempted, under instructions from the local British officer, to count the goats and sheep belonging to Nwanyeruwa, an important woman in the village, she yelled, "Was your mother counted?" at which point they seized each other by the throat. A meeting of women was called, where it was decided to send a palm leaf, the symbol of trouble and a call for help, to all the women in the area. Women poured into Okugo's compound from around the countryside and proceeded to "sit" upon him. To "sit" upon a man is a pidgin English term referring to the punishment inflicted by women on any man who has broken their laws. It has the same meaning as "spoiling" a person's property. The crowd mobbed the chief, damaged his house, demanded his cap of office, and forced the district officer to arrest him and charge him with assault. "The women," said this officer with some embellishment, "numbering over ten thousand, were shouting and yelling round the office in a frenzy. They demanded his cap of office, which I threw to them, and it met the same fate as a fox's carcase thrown to a pack of hounds. The station between the office and the prison ... resembled Epsom Downs on Derby Day."

Despite assurances from chiefs and administrative officers that women were being counted for purposes other than taxation, the trouble spread to Aba, an important trading center. There some 10,000 women, calling themselves "the trees which bear fruit" and "scantily clothed, girdled with green leaves, carrying sticks," converged upon the town. They attacked and looted the European trading stores and the bank, broke into the prison, and released prisoners. After 2 days of rioting, troops arrived and dispersed the crowds without serious casualties.

In another part of Igbo land crowds of women gathered, bedecked in the symbols of war. "Dressed in sackcloth, their faces smeared with charcoal, sticks wreathed with young palms in their hands, while their heads were bound with young ferns," they burned the Native Court and sacked and looted the European store and other property. They declared that the district officer "was born of a woman, and as they were women they were going to see him." When the women mobbed police and military troops, 18 were killed and 19 wounded. In another incident, elsewhere, 32 women were killed and 31 wounded after a mob of women made threatening and obscene gestures against the troops, calling them sons of pigs, and striking at the district officer with their sticks.

The trouble that broke out in early December was under control by the twentieth day of that month. Igbo men did not participate in the rioting. With a few exceptions, they acted as passive but consenting parties to the behavior of their wives. Children were nowhere in evidence during the riots. The rioting was carried out solely by adult women, who sent round the palm leaves to rally their comrades and beat the drums to convey the message of war, just as the drums are sounded to announce a council meeting. Unwilling women were forced to join. One woman, whose daughter-in-law was killed during the rioting, testified as follows:

We met a crowd of women heading to Utu-Etim-Ekpo. The women stopped us. There were plenty too much women, a very large crowd. They were coming along the road and beating their laps and lifting their heads towards the sky and waving their sticks. All had sticks; big sticks. I was afraid of them. They took away my basket and forced me to join them . . . "You are a woman, you must join us." They looked quite different from any other crowd of women I have ever seen. They had nkpatat (wild fern) round their heads. There were no children with them. As they had no children with them that also made me afraid. I do not know where any of the women came from. I was very much afraid of them and did not look at their faces.

The riots were a testimony to the vigor and solidarity of Igbo women. Although the threat of taxation was the immediate cause, they were really fighting to preserve "the spirit of womanhood." Speaking to the subsequent Commission of Inquiry, the women said, "We are not so happy as we were before . . . Our grievance is that the land is changed — we are all dying." Taking these words literally, the British did not understand their meaning. In fact, the women were right — their way was dying, their spirit and ties to the land were slowly being crushed by the new ways brought by the Europeans. The power of the women's councils had been eroded by the institution of a Native Court system composed solely of Igbo men. During the riots these courts were sacked and burned in 16 Native Administration centers. When giving evidence, the women "uttered a flood of criticism against the corruption and injustice of the chiefs and courts." The commission promised that the Native Courts would be reorganized to reflect more faithfully the Igbo system of justice, and that women would sit as judges.

In 1934 this promise had not been fulfilled. The women's councils had lost more power because the government forbade the women to "war," which had been their major means of enforcing their rulings. In rising to defend what they called the "women's world," Igbo women lost the women's war. Believing themselves to be inviolable, the women were shocked at the carnage leveled against them. Despite their assertions of being prepared to die, they firmly believed that the soldiers would not fire on women, that they had no bullets, and that women were never killed in war. As rioters, they compared themselves to vultures, which in Ibibio (a neighboring tribe) means the "messengers of God." One woman said to the commission:

I was surprised to see the soldiers fire as we were women we call ourselves vultures as we did not think soldiers would fire at us. Vultures go to market and eat food there and nobody molests them nobody will kill vultures even in the market, even if it kills fowls. We only fling sticks at them if they take our chop and so we thought soldiers will not harm us what we may do.

European education, Christianity, and the desire for European goods also contributed to the end of the "women's world." A fitting epilogue is delivered by Sylvia Leith-Ross, a concerned British woman, who wonders how long it will be before education can "give the girls something as important, as satisfying, as pervasive, as the land gave to their mothers." And so a new sex-role plan is imposed by the conquerors on the conquered.

The Mizrahi never left, or at least they've been there since before the Greeks showed up, still a small number of Samaritans as well, they're from the northern kingdom after Israel split following Solomon's death. Genetically at least the 2 European branches of the Jewish family are undeniably more closely related to the folks that never left than they are to any European genetic group.

Once again, Arizona is a swing state in the presidential election. In previous elections, including the hotly contested 2020 presidential election, Democratic candidates won top-of-the-ticket races against controversial Republican candidates, but lower-level contests remained firmly in Republican hands. So, what can a political history of Arizona tell us about what may happen in November?

Let’s start with geography. Election outcomes in Arizona often are determined by Phoenix and its suburbs (e.g. Maricopa County) where its 2.4 million voters comprise 59% of Arizona’s registered voters. The Phoenix metro area, once considered strongly Republican, now has pockets of Democratic support. Pima County, home to Tucson, is the second-largest county (at 15% of Arizona voters) and tends to favor Democratic candidates. While the remaining 13 mostly rural counties are viewed as conservative and Republican-leaning, there are exceptions. In Santa Cruz County with a mostly Latino population and Apache County with a mostly Native American population, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans.

How demographic groups in Arizona will vote for president mostly mirrors national trends, such as the influence of a gender gap and the impact of younger voters. Two demographic groups, however, may be more important in Arizona. Nearly one in four voters in Arizona are Latino. While Latinos in the past tended to support Democratic candidates, like the nation as a whole, some Arizona Latinos may be moving into the Republican Party. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a second group that could determine Arizona’s presidential election. Mormons compose five percent of Arizona’s population, typically voting for Republican candidates. However, some Mormons are offended by former President Donald Trump’s character, and a few prominent Mormons are speaking out. Former U.S. Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) announced he will vote for Kamala Harris. Former Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers (R-Ariz.)—who rejected Trump’s pleas to delay certification of Arizona’s 2020 presidential election—indicated he would not vote for either presidential candidate. How many Mormons decide not to vote for Trump could determine the outcome in a close presidential election.

Arizona’s open-seat Senate race pits MAGA Republican Kari Lake against Democrat Ruben Gallego. In 2022, Lake lost the governor’s contest by 17,000 votes but continues to dispute that outcome. Democrats nominated U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego from the Phoenix area, the Democratically leaning third congressional district. In his Senate campaign, Gallego adopted more moderate positions. He touts his background in the military and focuses on issues such as immigration reform and support for reproductive rights. Lake repeats campaign themes from 2022 with an emphasis on curbing illegal immigration through the building of the border wall. Much of the candidates’ and outside spending advertising, however, is negative with Gallego and Democratic groups painting Lake as too extreme on abortion and Lake tying Gallego to unfavorable Biden policies which she blames for high inflation and high interest rates. Gallego has been more successful in raising campaign funds with $31.9 million versus $10.3 million for Lake in the July reports. Gallego has benefited more from outside group spending.

Two of Arizona’s nine congressional districts are competitive. In district one, located in suburban Phoenix, seven-term Republican David Schweikert faces off against Democrat Amish Shah, a physician and member of the Arizona House of Representatives. While a seven-term incumbent would normally be viewed as safe, Schweikert barely won in 2022 with a margin of less than one percentage point. Schweikert has outraised Shah $2.7 million to $1.5 million but each has benefited from independent expenditures. Issues in the first congressional district reflect national themes. Schweikert focuses on his role in the House Ways and Means committee as key for lowering taxes and argues for tougher border controls. Shah touts his bipartisan record in the state legislature and supports reproductive rights, specific border issues such as tougher penalties for smuggling fentanyl, and protecting Social Security and Medicare.

In the sixth district, Republican incumbent Juan Ciscomani is in a rematch with Democratic nominee Kristin Engel. In 2022, when the seat was open, Ciscomani won by 1.5 percentage points. Arizona’s sixth district is competitive because it combines the eastern half of Democratic-leaning Tucson with rural Republican-leaning Cochise County. Both candidates raised approximately the same amount of money at $4.4 million. Both congressional parties’ PACS also are active in the district. Ciscomani paints Engel as being soft on crime and border issues while Engel describes Ciscomani as being too conservative on reproductive rights. Each also claims that the other distorts their views.

Finally, an intriguing question is whether ballot propositions will mobilize either liberal or conservative voters. One initiative would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. If this initiative mobilizes pro-choice voters, it could affect the outcome of the president, House and Senate contests. This could even affect the retention election for two of Arizona’s Supreme Court judges. In 2024, Arizona had two different abortion laws. One was the 1864 territorial law banning abortion. The second was a 2022 law with a 15-week ban. When signing the 2022 law, Republican Gov. Doug Ducey indicated it would not supplant the 1864 law. In deciding which law took precedence, the Arizona Supreme Court by a 4-2 vote upheld Arizona’s 1864 law. After the uproar over the court ruling, the state legislature voted to vacate the 1864 law. Judicial retention elections are usually noncontroversial, so a vote to oust two judges would be an upset.

In total, 13 propositions appear on Arizona’s ballot, with eleven referred by the state legislature in an ongoing battle between a Republican-controlled state legislature and Democratic governor Katie Hobbs. One consequence of these numerous ballot propositions is that in some Arizona counties, voters will receive a two-page ballot with contests listed on the front and back of each, potentially delaying the vote count. Another consequence is a concerted effort by Democrats to gain the two seats necessary in both chambers to obtain majority status for the first time in decades.

In 2020, Biden won Arizona by about 11,000 votes or 0.3% of the vote. Polling at this point gives Trump a narrow lead in the state but in a race this tight any of the aforementioned—geography, the Senate race, the two House races in swing districts or the ballot propositions, especially the one on abortion—could be critical to winning this very closely contested state.

Top 10 ways I Would Improve the US Government

1: I'm not a fan of complete Athenian style direct democracy but I think in the Senate each state should have one seat that's elected and one that's chosen by lottery.

2: The Speaker of the House has to dress up like Uncle Sam during proceedings. Yes including the stilts. We'll give them a 10 foot high podium. This ought to thin out the incumbents on their 6th or 7th term a little.

3: Instead of giving all the surplus armored vehicles the military doesn't want to the cops and horrible four letter federal agencies, give them to the USPS with the condition that they aren't allowed to use them in enforcement of mail fraud. I just want the comedy factor of guys delivering packages out of the back of a Stryker or whatever.

4: We should have a 4th branch of government formed from committees of random assholes pulled off the street, who we will drag from their somewhat tolerable lives and impound in a stuffy building with expensive parking, where we'll pay them sub-poverty wages and give them the power of life and death over other citizens what do you mean I just reinvented the jury system? Jesus Christ it's so hard to come up with an original idea these days, everything's already been done.

5: Okay new idea: if you get every single number wrong in the lottery ten consecutive times you get Jury Duty.

6: We'll reshuffle the acronyms of the 3 letter administrations to freshen things up. For example the DEA will now be the Department of Educational Achievement, and the FBI will be the Federal Borders and Immigration agency.

7: Repaint the White House red or blue depending on what party has the presidency. It should only be white when we elect a 3rd party candidate or independent.

8: Add a third chamber to the legislature. This will have 2 seats per state like the Senate, except the top 10 and bottom 10 states by population get a bonus seat and so do the top and bottom 10 by land area. Members are elected every 4 years, in midterm years only to make people pay attention to them.

9: Every 10 years each state has the option to adopt out one of its counties to another state that doesn't border it for purposes of highway funding.

10: End Gerrymandering by making all the congressional districts evenly spaced North-South bands. Bar code district maps for everyone.

Sure, even I’m pretty happy to see that the fandom hasn’t completely died out! 😄

((I should tell you that some of these have spoilers so read at your own risk.))

Rin is the oldest out of his four younger brothers, being a former MK-1 model and his brothers being MK-2 models. He was rescued by Neon J from being scrapped and helped salvage the rest of 1010 into the MK-3 models they are right now.

He remembers being deployed into the Border war as a former MK-1 on a battleship, but doesn’t remember a lot of it, due to memory files being corrupted or removed when he was rescued by Neon J. Rin describes his past life like a fleeting dream and can only recall bits and pieces of his old experience except at the end of the war.

He has heard of Eve/Nadia from Zuke and seen a photo of her because of the drummer showing it to him and talking about his experiences in college after several visits in hospital.

Out of all the NSR artists, Rin has the most unpleasant feelings for Eve, due to her toxic treatment towards her ex-boyfriend and getting him badly injured when she set his hair on fire. These feelings only got worse when she tried to gaslight Zuke during their encounter with her and derided him as a “thing”.

He often talks about his brothers to his other bandmates when observing the objects found around Vinyl City. Rin doesn’t know what’s going on with them since he left NSR and hasn’t stepped in the Metro District before the events of the Rock Revolution, but misses them constantly.

Rin is the one who found the disused part of the sewers which becomes Bunk Bed Junction’s home and base. Before the start of Bunk Bed Junction and after saving Zuke from his burning hair, the android was living in the sewers to stay out of sight from NSR, while also visiting his new drummer friend in the hospital during his recovery.

He and Mayday often have paint wars in the sewers with balloon paint bombs. Zuke on the other hand, hates the mess they always cause and reminds them to clean it up at the end of their paint wars.

Before the Rock revolution and the formation of Bunk Bed Junction, Rin used to blow off steam by vandalising NSR billboards using military graded paint bomb he made himself. Both Mayday and Zuke considers this his crazy wild side.

The only one time he used real live explosives was when he blew up a billboard in the (at the time) Dream Fever District, featuring Tatiana introducing Eve as a new NSR artist. He still kept other people in mind first and set off the fire alarm in the gallery to prevent any possible causalities.

Rin had no idea at the time, that his family actually believed he was dead and even held a funeral for him, with the Metro District keeping a permanent tribute for him on the streets. It was only until Yinu actually yelled at him for being a horrible big brother and seeing the tribute in the Metro District, that the bassist learned the truth.

Other than Zuke, Rin also found Kliff extremely suspicious when he got Mayday’s number and even knew the location of their base. As a result, he decided to keep a close eye on him, while Zuke and Mayday deal with DK West. The only reason he decided to let Kliff lend his help was for his info on the NSR artists since his is extremely outdated.

Meet Charles, a nightshift dock worker, a loner that likes to curl up with a good book and avoid social interactions. When the neighbours start to get a bit bitey, Charles manages to avoid becoming a Sim-burger and finds himself in charge of a small group trying to make it to tomorrow and not only survive but thrive. Or do they? Try the challenge and see.

To begin: 

When selecting a new game, select the story option where you answer questions to create a Sim. Select young adult and then just click randomly on the answers. Don't change too much about the Sim created. You can also use https://perchance.org/random-sim-generator. Best is to start with a male Sim.

Your Sims will have to be tested for the virus on a regular basis. The test is simple, just roll the dice and if you get even numbers, your Sim is safe. Uneven number means your Sim is infected so roll again and if you roll even numbers, they stay alive. Uneven numbers means your Sim didn't make it. If your Sims rolls clean or survive, they are immune for two rolls. When your Sim “dies” because of a roll, you can either have them die for real and have Grim come get them or change them into a zombie and move them out.

Start in Spring in San Myshuno in 17 Culpepper House in the spice market. Set life span to long and seasons to max, turn off the celebrity system, turn on the basic living system in lot challenges and you're only allowed to have the cheapest of the cheap furniture. Open the calendar and go to the first day of autumn. Create a holiday called "supply run" and choose fighting as a tradition(this holiday can be deleted once done). Go to Strangerville to the Sigworth household. Give Jess the pack items(by pressing shift on Jess and going to pack cheats), put her in a hazmat suite and open all the doors to the motherplant at the secret lab to activate the Strangeville storie. When she returns to her lot, zombie proof it the way you'd think someone with a military background and in a hurry would do. Give her ammo, a weapon and a radio from the zombie mod and listen to the broadcast to activate the zombie event. Do one event every day for 3 days.

Rooftop lot in the City: should be on one of the roofs with a campfire, generator, water tower, tents, washing line and tub. This lot will have water and power but the simple living trait.

In the spice district create a clinic lot with a army feel to it on one of the ground lots in the spice district.

Create a groceries store in the city.

Build a vet clinic that doubles as a hospital. Willow Creek, Newcrest, Windenburg, Evergreen, Mt. Komberi, Tartosa and San Sequoia are all available.

Build a "trader" post on the bar lots in Henford, Brindelton, Chestnut and Sulani.

Build a military base in Oasis Springs with family housing

Build a science facility in Strangerville with family housing

In Henford, Brindleton and Chestnut on the largest lot build a town (think Hilltop from The Walking Dead). Make it a rental property so many Sims can live in your town.

All towns are destroyed. It's the apocalypse, seed your worlds accordingly.

This challenge is ever evolving. I'm trying to use every world, every pack and use every bit of what Sims 4 has to offer.

In Pavlograd, Dnipropetrovsk region, 25 people were injured as a result of a Russian missile attack. Three of them are children.

ISLAMIC RESISTANCE IN IRAQ LAUNCHES MULTI-PHASE ASSAULT ON THE ISRAELI OCCUPATION

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced today, the implementation of a multi-phase assault against the Israeli occupation and its forces.

The first announcement, which was published on affiliated Islamic Resistance telegram channels, says that the Islamic Resistance in Iraq fired a number of "Al-Arqab developed cruise missiles" towards a "vital target" in Israeli-occupied Beersheba, in the southern district of the occupied Palestinian territories on Thursday afternoon.

According to the statement:

"In continuation of our approach to resisting the occupation and supporting our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians, including children, women and the elderly, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq targeted a vital target in Beersheba in our occupied territories this afternoon, Thursday, 2/5/2024, with missiles. Al-Arqab "Cruz Developer", and the Islamic Resistance confirms its continued attack enemy strongholds."

In the second announcement, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq said they'd targeted another vital target, firing "Al-Arqab developed cruise missiles" towards Tel Aviv.

According to the statement:

"Continuing our approach to resisting the occupation and supporting our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians, including children, women and the elderly, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq targeted a vital target in Tel Aviv in our occupied territories on Thursday afternoon, 5/2/2024, with missiles. Al-Arqab is a "developed cruise missile," and the Islamic Resistance confirms that it will continue to destroy enemy strongholds."

Following the second announcement, the Islamic resistance published a video showing the firing of those Al-Arqab developed cruise missiles towards Beersheba and Tel Aviv.

Lastly, the Iraqi resistance said they'd targeted another vital target in the Dead Sea, likely an Israeli or affiliated vessel, military or commercial.

According to the statement:

"Continuing our approach to resisting the occupation, supporting our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians, including children, women and the elderly, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq targeted a vital target in the Dead Sea this morning, Friday 5/3/2024 with appropriate weapons, the Islamic Resistance confirms its continued destruction of enemy strongholds."
