“What do you want to do after school?” Mary asks Emmeline, the two of them sitting at the top of the Astronomy Tower, staring out at the night sky.

“I don’t know yet,” Emmeline says, leaning back. “I’m going to take a gap year. Figure it out then.”

Mary looks over at her, startled. “Isn’t that a muggle thing?” Emmeline has two wizard parents, and Mary is used to everyone other than muggle-borns being extremely separate from muggle culture.

Emmeline nods. “Yeah. To be honest, there aren’t that many great options for what wizards can do straight after school. All of them seem to involve knowing what you want your entire career to look like. So I was looking into muggle options. Seeing what else there is to do.”

“So you’re taking a gap year? To do what?” Mary asks, scooting closer. She and Emmeline have been dating since the beginning of seventh-year, when Mary found herself drawn to the open, curious way that Emmeline sees the world. She isn’t in Ravenclaw because of a need for esoteric knowledge; she’s in Ravenclaw for her thirst to learn about people: to understand what their lives are like, how they see the world, and to record it all on her muggle camera. Of course Emmeline would turn to muggle paths of education, unaffected by the superiority towards them ubiquitous in wizarding society. Mary has never loved her more.

“I want to travel,” Emmeline says. “I want to see as much of the world as I can, and I want to capture it all. A million small moments from a million different cultures. Hogwarts exposes us to such a tiny part of humanity, when there are so many great things out there. How are we supposed to know what we want to do with our lives when we’re given barely any options?”

Mary thinks about it. Thinks about all those nights she’s spent staring at the careers flyers plastered all over the common room and mulling over the useless careers advice she was given in her meeting. Thinks about how unexcited she gets every time one of her classmates talks about joining the ministry or becoming a healer because none of those options appeal to her. Thinks about the savings she’s accrued from the countless hours she’s spent working at her local cafe the last three summers. And she thinks about how it would feel to explore the world instead of being locked down into a boring wizarding job she doesn’t care about.

Mary looks over at her girlfriend with a soft smile, allowing their fingers to brush before taking her hand in hers. “I think I’d like to see the world, too.”
