or rather, my little hyperfixation hole. i've wanted to make a blog since wisdom saga, but there was always something in the way. but now that the ithaca saga is out (still fangirling about it ngl), i decided to finally do it!!

Nemoralia and the birthday of Goddess Diana

As I wasn't able to celebrate Nemoralia two days ago, I thought I'd make a post about it today. Nemoralia was a festival in honour of Goddess Diana. This festival was originally held at Diana's temple in Aricia, current day Nemi (50 minutes away from Rome by car).

May this informational post honor the goddess and help those that want to celebrate this festival.

August 13 - Diana's Dies Natalis

This was thought to be Diana's dies natalis (birthday) by members of the collegium of Diana and Antinous in Lanuvium.

Everyone took part in this festival though the main focus were women. As told by Plutarch, on this day, for reasons unknown nowadays, they washed their hair in a special ritual.

Enslaved people got this day off as they were under the protection of the goddess (worth to keep in mind that Diana's priest at Lake Nemi was always a runaway enslaved man). Male citizens and masters were able to participate in this festival but they were required to be on equal terms with women and enslaved people.

As this is one of the hottest days of the year, the celebrations started at night. Worshipers adorned not only their heads with flowers crowns, but also the heads of their dogs as they also took part in the celebration. Hunting or killing animals in any way was forbidden on this day. Horses were forbidden from entering this area.

At night, worshipers assembled at the Sanctuary and walked in a procession around Lake Nemi while holding candles or torches, similar to the ones Vestal Virgins carried. People wrote petitions on ribbons and tied them on tree branches and they also left votive offerings at the temple, especially related to part of the body in need of healing.

How to celebrate in current day

Make an offering to Diana. Some ideas are baking moon-shaped cakes, pouring wine, cutting a flock of your hair for her or lighting a special candle. You could also read a hymn in her honour.

Wash your hair or go to the hair salon to get a trim. Adorn it with flower crowns.

If you have a dog, pamper them!! Wash them, take them on a longer walk than usual, buy then special treats... The possibilities are endless.

Write your petitions in a ribbon and tie it in a tree branch. If you don't have any trees near you could also tie it to any plants you're growing at home or bury it in the ground.

Donate to good causes, foundations or shelters related to women, animals or those in need. The world really needs that right now.

If you are near Nemi, go to the ruins of the goddess' temple. People still give her flowers til this day. Also the council of Nemi celebrates Nemoralia since 2016, though I think this year was discontinued since I wasn't able to find any information about it.

The program is formed by different types of activities, from history or art lectures to guided tours or nature walks.

What's the actual date of Nemoralia?

There's a lot of confusion online about what the actual date of Nemoralia is, with some people saying it's only celebrated on the 13th, others saying it's on the 15th and others saying is a three day festival.

It's believed that at first it was celebrated on the full moon but during the Roman Republic it was set on August 13, as back then that's when the full moon happened. This has led modern scholars like Frazer to think that the festival may extended over a few days instead of just one.

So, when to celebrate? If you want to follow the Roman calendar, it should be on August 13. However, if you want to celebrate on a full moon like ancient worshipers would have, then it depends on the year (in 2024 it would be on August 19).

Additionally, since it's believed Nemoralia became the Assumption of Mary through syncretism with Catholicism, you may want to choose August 15 to celebrate, because if you live in a Catholic country or canton you'll most likely get a day off from work - which means more time to celebrate!

for some rewritten material on her there's kathy acker's my mother demonology. but everything by kathy acker relates to the subject: blood and guts in highschool, empire of the senseless.

(sidenote from an interview w kris kraus on her biography: According to Eleanor Antin, Kathy worked at a massage parlor in Solana Beach for a while, and she did not give massages. another classic but story of o written by pauline réage plus its beautiful illustrations by leonor fini. it's actually said her fantastical owl masks inspired the character of o + she was really close to andré pieyre de mandiargues, whose one story la marge was adapted by walerian borowczky in immoral tales. then there's sacher masoch's venus in furs. you've probably already heard of anais nin's delta of venus.

i specifically highly rec mary gaitskill. bad behaviour is a great short story collection - one of the stories specifically inspired the film secretary (2002). her essay, the trouble with following the rules, on rape culture and agency published in harper's bazaar (later repub in somebody with a little hammer) is one rare occurrence of nuance and grace accorded to women who've had sexual experiences that are difficult to categorise. it gives a rundown of the ways she personally relates to feminist scholars on the subject too.

there's problems by jade sharma. for a more modern story of the eye, try ryu murakami's ecstasy.

HC that Chris Rodriguez fought his whole life just trying to be loved.

He grew up not knowing who his dad was.

And his mother hardly gave him the time of day either. Only ever seeing the unknown man that left her with a child.

Chris did everything to garner any sense of pride fron her. But he always saw her happier with the kids she drove around as a bus driver then himself. That despite being her flesh and blood, he was always her last favorite child.

Even when he started going to school, the route his mother drove wasn't thier own. He rode to school on another driver's bus.

His aunt was really the only one who made him feel like he was wanted by someone at the time, but her and his mom fought so much he hardly saw her.

He was attached by a monster at school who pulled him into the office posing as a vice principal, he just barely managed to be saved by a Satyr and soon taken to Camp Half-Blood. Immediately, he took to Luke who made him feel at home in the Hermes Cabin.

He never went back home. It took forever to be reported missing, but it didn't really matter to him.

He grew bitter over his father never claiming him, a feeling encouraged by Luke's talk of the gods. Finally know somewhat of his heritage made the years dealing with the bitterness his mother had feel even worse.

But at camp he felt that he at least found a home. That he was loved and seen as family. That he wasn't a least favorite anymore. He had family and friends.

But he never stopped being eager to please.

When Luke betrayed camp,he was filled with mixed emotions,but when Luke asked him to join he did so without hesitation.

He became his right hand,often handling the demigod side of things why Luke seemed busy dealing with the Titans and monsters.

Chris got Hermes more diplomatic side. He could keep tensions down and kept the demigod army from infighting. A skill Luke know he had from his interactions with Clarisse back at camp.

But Chris quickly became disillusioned with it as Luke drifted further from them. Chris felt like he was desperately struggling to keep his affection and attention, and when he got any interaction with him and ended in arguments over the treatment of the demigods in the army.

Chris took care of the younger demigods that monsters like Mr.Thorn dragged into the army. Training them and doing his best to keep them from being pulled into dangerous missions. Giving them the attention and love he hardly got.

So when a young demigod named Mary was tasked with going into the Labyrinth to find Aridane's string,Chris immediately volunteer to go with her. To not only protect her, but in hopes to get Luke being proud of him again.

Not too long into the Labyrinth they'd been captured by Antinous, forced to fight in his arena.

Mary ended up being killed, and Chris just barely managed to get out alive.

Even before Minos he had been spiraling. The sense of dread, failure and loneliness tearing him apart inside out.

When Minos cursed him, he was left a shell. Stumbling the Labyrinth's path alone.

Weather by some miracle, or some form of intervention, he stumbled out just near where Clarisse was. Somehow making his way out of the Labyrinth on his own in state of insanity.

Chris, who been use to being left and forgotten about his whole life, suddenly had someone fighting to keep him alive. Someone who wanted him there. Who devoted time and effort to be there for him.

His father, whether during or after, finally decides to claim him. But it all feels sour to Chris. And really, at this point, he given up trying to get his attention.

Once he's cured, he fights with his own guilt and sense of feeling like an outcast. But Clarisse, Silena and Charles support him. The Stolls are ecstatic that Chris is alive and with them again. He feels at home at camp. He feelings wanted.

He gives up trying to appease adults/ parents for an drop of recognition. It doesn't mean he's not bitter, seeing Hermes' obvious favoritetism towards Luke why those in his cabin fight for his attention leaves him frustrated. But instead of letting that anger build up, he gives his energy making up for his father's faults.

He makes the choice to be better then Hermes, or Luke. To not be consumed with himself or his anger.

A kid who grew up fighting to love and belonging makes it his duty to make sure others don't have to feel the way he'd felt.

He has friends. Family. Someone who loves him. He doesn't need much more then that. Not anymore.

bellatrix/beretta is a femme fatale witchy goth mother sex worker / sugar baby, assassin & supersoldier, marie/maverick is a warrior, swordswoman, supersoldier & assassin & eventually brothel madam & pâtisserie owner, clementine is an assassin & a survivalist & a witch in her own right during the apocalypse in her canon verse, leah is a wolf shapeshifter who protects her community from those who would harm her people & community, lyanna is an esteemed equestrian, warrior & potentially a greenseer & skinchanger in interpretation & was deemed queen of love and beauty & later became a woods witch & fought in the war of the five kings, sansa is a politically savvy princess turned queen in her own right who is canonically the pinnacle of femininity by westerosi standards & she's an it girl in her own right, sherry/sherissa was a stripper & a sugar baby & a sex worker who ended up marrying a mafia boss & influencing ergastulum politics, loretta is a mafia boss in her own right of her own crime syndicate even as a child & a GIRL at that & can carry her own & is a damn good shot for her age, & katniss is a survivalist & revolutionary icon in her own right. they're allowed to be tomboys, hyperfeminine or somewhere in between or neither, they're allowed to be disabled & neurodivergent & queer, they're capable of being world leaders, military leaders & spiritual leaders & revolutionaries, they're allowed to be on any aspect of the morality scale, they're allowed to come from wealthy families or raised in poverty, they're allowed to be shown in jewels & riches & wear pretty & sexy dresses & be covered in flowers & have poetry written about them & walk down damn runways & be full of themselves bc native women are just as modern & sexy as white women & other nonnative women & most importantly they FIGHT BACK. we already have a bunch of antinative stereotypes about natives being violent & native women being assaulted or abused or killed off onscreen but they can't be hurt so easily, they can get their vengeance quickly, & can fight back against their enemies just as hard.
