כָּבֵד, the liver, is the heaviest of the viscera—its root shares 'heavy' as a referent. in the earliest, archaic hebrew sources—the yahwist pentateuch and its priestly redactions—the liver appears in extispicy. in this method of augury, organs are analyzed as signs. here, sacrifice is prophecy, and the liver and its lobes, heavy and avowable, are extimité. there is no unassailable interiority in this ritual, no organ foreclosed from hands and holding and heaven's reinscriptions
