so what kind of vampires are present in cosmic legends?
Literally every single type, and this doesn't only pertain to Vampires.
Think of words like Vampire or Werewolf like the word Dog; it's an umbrella term that encompasses any number of different breeds.
A Yorki and a Great Dane are both Dogs, but you wouldn't call a Great Dane a Yorki, and vice versa, 'cause those terms refer to a specific breed.
So a Nosferatu and a Venerable Overlord are both Vampires, but if you referred to a Venerable Overlord as a Nosferatu, you'd get your face ripped off.
Same with Werewolves, Wolfmen and Sacred Wolves are both Werewolves, but it's wildly different strains of the Lycanthropy virus.
Note: I have used the most diluted forms (Nosferatu and Wolfmen) vs. the most pure forms (Venerable Overlords and Sacred Wolves) as my examples, but there are a lot more strains than what was listed. Also Diluted vs. Pure just refers to how much your line contains "turned" rather than "born". Some families care, others don't, the purity of which not really being the root of this, it's really just a personal preference thing.
#Cosmic Legends#vampire#werewolf#lore#the umbrella term for Dragon-adjacent creatures btw is *not* ''Dragon''#it's ''Draconian''#what constitutes a Dragon is rather broad#but it's not the umbrella term because there are Draconian creatures that are not Dragons#like Wyverns Wyrms and Drakes#and no a ''Wyvern'' does not refer to any two-legged Dragon#a Wyvern has two legs arm-wings a scorpion tail and spits poison or acid#*that* is what constitutes a Wyvern#if it is two legged and has wings but lacks the scorpion stinger and breathes an element then it's not a fucking Wyvern#it's a two-legged dragon#yes I will die on this fucking hill

Again not a dungeon meshi reader/watcher but every time I hear about that laois guy I get reminded of how my system had/has a hyperfixation on dragons so intense that we got that big fancy dragonology book and we treated it like the damn dragon Bible for like years
Now, obviously, we understand that there's different interpretations on mythical creatures, and no one interpretation on a dragon is necessarily gospel, but that multiple interpretations on the classic tale of beasts of scale and fire are completely valid and to be expected!
however if you call an Eastern dragon a coatl I'm going to come to your house and slaughter your family
#THEY'RE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT#yes they have similarities but coatls have WINGS typically and dont usually have other limbs. they're more serpentine birds#meanwhile Eastern dragons (Chinese depictions for example) don't typically have wings and are more lizard-like#like Mushu !!!!!!!! Mushu is an Eastern dragon#and then there's drakes and wyrms. which are entirely different bc they can't really fly#drakes are more like draconic horses or dogs. no wings but four limbs and a tail with a reptilian appearance#wyrms are more serpentine with no limbs and no wings. though i think some interpretations of wyrms give them like.. two forelimbs#then there's wyverns. wyverns have two legs and two wings instead of the typical eight limbs (four limbs two wings)#(i also perosnally hold true to the interpretation of wyverns with poisonous stingers for tails but that's just me cause i think its cool)#..... how much of this is just me talking abiut dragons#explodes.#oh yeah and obv there's the HTTYD interpretations which i adore! they're interesting#the designs are so fascinating and from what ive seen seem to have some science behind them#and arent just the typical western style of dragons. which nothing wrong with the western style it's a classic ofc#but it's still fun to see some variation!!#and ofc there's WOF#which holds true to Western dragons in simple anatomy but has its own variations and of course its own lore#then there's. fuck i forget the name but it's a fantasy story based in China i believe#i loved it so much it was so cool#anyways it had a dragon character named Seryu. I love Seryu. he my favorite#anyways i liked the interpretation of dragons there bc iirc it held true to ummmmm some Chinese mythology involving dragons#cause Eastern mythology of drahons is . so much diffetent than Western#Western dragons are commonly very monstrous creatures‚ usually very animalistic#they tend to embody the Christian concept of greed/gluttony hence why they're so typically monstrous/villainous#which i find interesting but i wont get into that#meanwhile. i wanna say Eastern dragon legends more revolve around the idea of a dragon as more of a godly/fae-type creature?#that's probably a poor comparison but that's how i interpreted it. agian im probahly wronf about all of this#im some weirdo rambling about dragons on the internet. dont trust me explicitly#i need to get more dragon mythology books#HELP I REACHED THE TAG LIMIT I DIDNT THINK THAT WAS POSSIBLE GOOD LORD OKAY I'LL SHUT UP NOW

speaking of snake dragons, i wanna see more snekky dragons from FE in the future. especially a black mamba.
the little creechers are so cute. extremely deadly and absolutely not something you want to encounter out in the wild (they're only aggressive if threatened or cornered, but better to be safe than sorry ya know), but absolutely adorable. look at their little smile. their little grin. their little beady eyes. i love them so much
Veyle's dragon form is a black mamba. in my own little world of headcanons at least.
I'M REALLY GLAD make the headcanons you want to see in the world!

I mean... yes... but also... politely: I will call them all dragons, as I would call a Lion a Cat...
know the difference
It has come to my attention that many people mistake wyverns for dragons, so here’s a post to help you remember
Dragon: 4 legs, 2 wings

Wyvern: 2 legs, 2 wings

Drake: 4 legs, flightless

Wyrms: long snake like body with no appendages, can also appear as a traditional Chinese dragon with 4. Legs and no wings yet can fly

Amphithere: 0 legs 2 wings, can be feathered

Lindwurms: 2 legs, 0 wings, long body

Luck dragon: 4 legs, no wings, can fly, long body, furry with dog like face

Komodo dragon: 4 legs, no wings, real

Bearded dragon: 4 legs, 0 wings, often kept as pets

#dragons#wyrm#drake#komodo dragon#wyvern#I know the difference#but I believe them to belong to the same family. They all belong to Draconis family if you will#obviously the bearded dragon and komodo dragon have their own#taxonomic categories#but the others... all dragons for all they are not All Dragons#Like... All Wyverns are dragons but not all Dragons are wyverns.

A drake has four legs no wings, a wyvern has two legs two wings. Your Bluebeard Drake should be called a Bluebeard Wyvern./nm (I just saw your post and the autism acted up)
"drake" is just a generic term for a dragon in mythology. making dragon/dragon/wyrm/etc separate concepts is a very modern trope that originated from works like dungeons and dragons - you don't have to use their worldbuilding anymore than you have to make your original aliens fit into the star wars world

I VOTED FOR MERFOLKS BUT THE DRAGONS WON!!!!! it's fine dragons are cool af
anywayyyy
Can you rank the dragons based on how territorial they are?
- 🦐
Yep!
Most
Leviathan
Surprise to no one; if any dragon doesn't get the hint that they need to stay away from his territory, He will strangle them to death. This Wyrm will do anything to stake its claim and fiercely defend it No matter how much It mistreats it. After all It is never had a luxury of having a hoard or a mate before.
Satan
It is never a good idea to mess with a fire-breathing wyvern. Mainly if their hoard consists of weapons. This wyvern might be the smallest of the seven. But keep in mind whoever is trying to steal your attention is still messing with a dragon.
Asmodeus
It is not very often, when does Drake finds a mate it likes, However the moment he you'll be surprised to find out that this drake of lust isn't too fond of sharing.
Lucifer
Still getting used to his new form his body somehow acts on his own when he sees another dragon getting a little too close He could feel something in his chest squeeze unbearably tied. He doesn't have to do much because just the sight of him sends the other dragon running.
Beelzebub
It's hard to take another dragon seriously when this fae sees everything as a potential meal. But that doesn't mean it won't sit by and watch as another dragon tries to stick a claim.
Belphegor
It would be easier if no one messes with him, But I guess dragons think it's easier to mess with a sleeping dragon's territory. In a way, they are correct, But unlike most of the dragons on this list, he will not give that other dragon the luxury of living. It's much easier killing the weaker competition than defending What is yours.
Mammon
It's Its treasure horde is plentiful. What will a few missing couple of coins do to its vast lair of glittering gold and sparkling jewels? It laughs at the idea of someone, not him, taking what's his... Because everything is his and everything will be his at some point. And even then he'd rather not fight. Greed, whether it be another dragon or a human man, usually outweighs the need for a mate if the amount is enough.

Arranged marriage?
Chapter two.
Royal au
Pairing: princess (to be queen) Natasha X autistic queen reader.
Warnings: Natasha being an asshole. (She gets better... Just not yet.) Natasha getting feelings?
Y/n pov:
The gardens. Meant to be peaceful and calming. But unfortunately I have another meeting with a seething princess Romanoff. She's mad because of how our last interaction went. Me having a meltdown over scrolls and books. Well Natasha calls it a meltdown. I call it being rationally upset over precious history being damaged. But I don't think I could get away with telling Natasha to leave again so I let her rant. Not that I'm listening. I've always been terrible at that..
"are you even listening to me!?"
I'm startled out of my thoughts by those angry words. I glance at Natasha again. I blink slightly as I register the question.
"oh uh.. no."
I then realised that's probably the wrong response as Natasha goes into another loud rant. I'm surprised she's known for her rich kingdom and powerful presence and not overly loud rants that don't need to happen. I would much rather be on the molten wyrm walk down in the southern parts of my kingdom that's happening right now but princess Romanoffs family insisted we meet up today at this time. It's as if the entire family doesn't want me to enjoy my dragons.
"yes princess Romanoff I apologise for my insolent behaviour from our last conversation."
The words come like clockwork. The amount of times I've apologised to this woman I don't even know. But then again it may not be that many since I never counted. I stand up wanting to at least try and get this meeting to come to some sort of an agreeable end and I offer my hand to Natasha.
"perhaps you would entertain a walk with me around my gardens?"
Natasha pov:
I'm pissed. Very very pissed. I'm meant to marry an incompetent woman who seems to have no dignity or self confidence. She's a push over but perhaps this could be useful in further advances to kill her later on. I despise the fact that y/n is offering a walk. As if I would like to walk with her. I would like to shove a knife in her skull. But I can't. Not until we marry and my parents are content. So I shall have to agree.
"very well then. Let us hope your insolent nature doesn't intrude this time."
I scowl as I take queen y/n's hand. And despite the fact I despise the queen with every inch of my existence I must admit her hands are soft and warm. But I ignore it and walk.
Thus far this walk has been uninteresting and a disappointment all round. And I've made that known by complaints. Queen y/n seems to be taking it well. But I doubt she's listening. That wretched woman never is. It's always dragons with her. Something wyrm this something serpent that. Nobody cares about the creatures because of how common it is to find plant drakes and poison lily wyverns in one's garden or even a mouse dragon in one's walls. But it seems as though this woman is stuck on the things.
"and did you know that while Treetailed pixie dragons are commonly found small and the size of someone's palm they actually grow to be the height of any other tree but nobody notices them because of their specially designed tails. So if you look close enough in woods or even orchards you might find one living there unnoticed."
Queen y/n spouts. She's been talking about these dragons nonstop since we were walking. The only break I get is my complaints about how the walk is stupid. I glare down at y/n as she keeps yapping away. But I'm caught off guard when my immediate first thought is she's cute.
Now I'm upset with myself. Why was that my first thought. Queen y/n is anything but cute. She's a weird queen who holds no grasp over her kingdom and is obsessed over common creatures such as dragons. Though I suppose the ones she mentions are ones I never learned about. And it's endearing when she rants. I internally smack myself at that thought. No. Absolutely not. Y/n is not cute or endearing. She's annoying and weak. And she'll be just another murder under my belt in a few more years.
Y/n pov:
I hardly focus on princess Romanoff beside me as I talk. I had spotted a Bumblefluff quetzalcoatl and hadn't stopped talking about dragons since. Though I can see Natasha getting upset with me about it. I internally sigh as I slow down my rant. Perhaps I should be known for my rants considering I do it as much as Natasha. Only my ants are useful. Not mean. Like princess Romanoffs are.
I glance over at said princess and notice her deep in thought with herself. She looks angry. I suppose that's my fault. Must've said something to annoy her. Though it could've been my entire speech. I don't know. Reading people is hard no matter what anyone tells me.
"princess are you ok?"
I'm asking, trying not to be rude like Natasha herself is. I hope it doesn't come across as nosy. I never can tell how people will take my inquiries. Almost always to offense though.
"does it look like I'm ok!?"
Natasha snarls. I never knew she could snarl like that. It was almost animalistic. Too real. I flinch away slightly and fidget with my fingers. There's no books to take my attention away here. I sigh and shake my head.
"no."
I mumble softly. Though this causes a worse reaction out of Natasha. Now she's yelling about how stupid am to ask if she's ok when she's definitely not. I was trying to be nice. But I guess she took it the wrong way. I dodge one of Natasha's hands as she flails them around as she screeches at me for the millionth time. I let her get it out of her system before talking again.
"I apologise princess."
*I speak gently. I hate when people yell at me. Their screaming irritates my ears. I'll avoid social interaction for a while after this. Maybe forever. That sounds nicer than a life condemned to princess Natasha Romanoff. I sigh and keep walking. Now in silence with Natasha. Until I see another Bumblefluff quetzalcoatl and get excited again.
I rush over but slow as I near the small dragon. It's on a lead as of current looking between an orange or yellow flower. I sit a bit away and watch in silence as the small Quetzalcoatl goes about its business. And by the colours it's a female. The yellow and black have been dulled to a near white and grey. The makes are normally brighter and have twinges of orange in the larger ones. I practically squeal with delight as I watch the Bumblefluff quetzalcoatl.
Natasha pov:
I ranted to y/n. This time about my frustrations with her and her dragon obsession. I also slipped the fact I'm going to murder her. Only to test if the queen listens. She doesn't even comment on it. Though I feel guilty when I see y/n flinch. That's not what I had intended. I stop screaming after a few moments and our walk falls to silence. Until queen y/n exits my side and rushes over to a second bumble fizz cutie colt or whatever she said it's name was.
I groan lightly as I stop walking and watch the woman who's meant to be a queen act like a young princess. But y/n does look adorable as she watches the funny dragon she's examining. Wait now she doesn't. Y/n is a frail queen I'll destroy when the time is right.
Y/n is not adorable, endearing or cute. Y/n is not adorable, endearing or cute. Y/n is not adorable, endearing or cute. It's like my fucking mantra now. I'm just repeating it over and over in my skull. Me and the queen are walking again and the gardens end is in view. I practically jump in delight but that's not queenly behaviour so I don't. I'm just trying to keep myself together for the remainder of this horrid walk. Queen y/n is yapping about small dragons again. I'm forcing myself to think it's rancid. And I'm mad I'm needing to force that opinion when it should be natural.
I try not to make a happy noise as the gardens finally come to an end and me and y/n are back where we began. Though I know I'm probably glowing. I can leave. And hammer in the thoughts of queen y/n being only an obstacle again. These thoughts of the queen being sweet are hindering my plan to assassinate her later. I won't have that.
"it seems our walk has ended. And just in time too I need to leave."
I speak in a passive aggressive tone. Though I don't think y/n realises I'm was being passive aggressive since she agrees with me. I hurry over the goodbyes. Desperate to leave this dreaded castle and it's dreaded owner and her dreaded influence over my mind. I eventually get out of the castle grounds and I'm back in my carriage. Going home. I need to get my priorities straight again before these thoughts get in my way.
A/n: I decided to write a Nat pov for this chapter since I could imagine how her side of this interaction would go. Not all chapters will be spilt povs but some of them will. Hope this suffices as a chapter.

Happy Dracones Monday! Firedrakes!
Happy Dracones Monday! This Monday we're looking at four dragon species at once, the firedrakes! Here they are, approximately to scale with eachother.
The glitterdrake is the smallest, the size of a large lizard or small cat. They live in laurel forests on Macaronesian Islands, in the Atlantic near Africa. Glitterdrakes aren't based on mythology; I put them on Macaronesia because I couldn't find Macaronesian dragon mythology but I am trying to put dragons EVERYWHERE on the map. Also, putting these dragons on an archipelago of islands means I can have a lot of island subspecies and colour morphs - glitterdrakes represent colourful fantasy dragons, so having them come in every colour (sapphire blue, ruby red, emerald green, royal purple, burning gold, shining silver etc.) was important to me.
The Welsh dragon is smaller than the other European firedrakes at 1.5 meters. They are no less fierce - there aren't any common firedrakes in Wales as a common firedrake cannot maintain a territory there for long. Originally I had the Welsh dragon as a subspecies of the common firedrake, but decided that this dragon had so much personality and folklore that it could get it's own chapter.
The common firedrake is found in Western Europe, 4m long. When designing these I noticed in a lot of heraldry dragons don't seem to have horns? Ears yes, but hornless? Also I noticed that dragons in heraldry tend to have the dorsal finlets from the back of the head to between their shoulders, but no further, which is something I have kept for all my firedrake species.
The viridian firedrake is the largest firedrake species, over 5m long. They are found in Eastern and Southern Europe, and in Russia. I based their appearance on old storybook illustrations to make them look very 'classic', which is why they have horns and cheek frills compared to the more heraldic and hornless common firedrake.
Rant about the term 'firedrake' under the cut! :)
In other creative works, these are called 'classic dragons', 'European dragons', 'true dragons' and 'Western dragons', but I am not a fan of these terms - 'true dragon' implies other dragons are untrue dragons, which is nonsense. 'Western dragon' or 'European dragon' is largely accurate (the 4 legged 2 winged dragon design is common in Europe and the West) but there are other Western and European dragons (wyrms and wyverns) and I find these terms confusing when other types of dragons are taken into account. Also, some Asian dragons also have 4 legs and 2 wings. 'Classic' dragons... serpentine and wyrmish dragons are more classic than 4 legged 2 winged firebreathers, etc.
I went with 'firedrake' as a term for these dragons because 'drake', 'drachen', 'ddraig', 'drac', 'drak' and 'dreki' are all words for dragons like this in European languages, and because firedrake is a word used in literature like some translations of Beowulf and, of course, Tolkien's Legendarium (firedrake comes from Old English fȳrdraca). I think it's a good word that easily conjures up fire breathing four legged, two winged dragons without making them more 'true' or 'classic' than other dragon types or tying them specifically to 'European' and 'Western' countries.
In Dracones Mundi I really try to get a huge diversity of dragons across to the readers. There are around 68 dragon species in this project, only 4 of which are firedrakes. I want to show readers there is more to dragon mythology than "here is a western dragon, they are evil and associated with fire, here is an eastern dragon, they are good and associated with water" - I want to dig deeper. I want people to know about azhdarha, about cuélebres, about coameh. So I'm shining the spotlight away from these firedrakes and trying to make them a small part of a much larger discussion. :)
#Dracones Mundi#Dracones Monday#Firedrakes#Dragons#Schedulling firedrake post for the monday before the firedrake plushies restock on friday hehe#Firedrake plushies found on Barksbog website on Friday 24th May 2024

Ok, so, off topic of what I usually do, but I had the thought and I’m curious what others think.
So…what do you think the batfam would be as dragons? Like, the specific types, like drakes, wyverns, things like that, because I’m 100% on board with Jason being a drake, because look him. He’s built like a fridge, man is a wall of muscle just like Bruce, he’s a drake, dude doesn’t fly.
But I think Bruce would actually be a normal dragon, because like I said, he’s just like Jason with being built like an absolute tank, but Bruce is also rather good at agility, plus the whole cape thing, so give him wings, he can fly now. Either he’s a dragon or a drake, both work for him actually.
I feel like Damian would be a Wyvern…no clue why, just feels right. Plus, most wyverns in media are venomous or have poison, and I feel that fits the whole assassin part kinda well, but I could be wrong, who knows.
Now Dick, he’s a toughy, because he’s Nightwing, he’s flexible, an acrobatic man, so he’d be something that would be restricted by wings or maybe even legs, so what if he’s just really long? Not a Wyrm, but like a really lengthy drake, like a lindworm but with four legs. Spindly dude.
I have not read enough on Tim to actually understand him but from the few things I know, dudes just a normal dragon. Unique in his own right but still pretty normal.
Also, what the hell would they even look like? They can’t all be black dragons, they’ve gotta have some unique looks, right?

Urban Fantasy Animals
I couldn't resist adding a small zoo of magical animals to this WIP, most of which are specifically for the joy of having a little magical pet. Here I have outlined the favorites of mine that I'll be including in the various anthology stories! You can find this and more world-building details on my Neocities site! Unnamed Urban Fantasy Anthology Taglist (Check out my Google Form to get added): @foxys-fantasy-tales @auroblaze @thelaughingstag @auntdarth @damageinkorporated
Dragon
European and Eastern type, drakes, wyverns, wyrms, etc.
Can be as small as a ferret, or the size of a Great Dane
Are kept as pets regularly
Depending on the species, dragon behaviors can vary from "lazy cat" to "purebred working border collie", so it's very important to research the kind of dragon that's right for the home
Griffon
Originally a lion and an eagle, but can be any combination of cat and bird after years of selective breeding and the influence of magic in different regions
The larger species’ are big enough for an adult to ride comfortably, but there are also smaller breeds kept as pets
Unicorn
Can be any horse with a horn glued on it
Are particularly picky about who they allow to ride them
Basically just a magic horse, so it's used for transportation, sports, pets, animal therapy, etc.
Pegasus
Can be any horse with wings glued on it
Incredibly skittish, even compared to a standard horse
Basically just a horse with wings, so it's used for transportation, sports, pets, animal therapy, etc.
Hippocampus
The upper body of any horse with the lower body of various fish
Used in water rescues, sports, and short-distance water transportation and recreation (think of them like living motorboats or jet skis)
Mimic
Modern day mimics can copy standard mimic objects (chests, rocks, etc.), but also modern-day objects, like music boxes, safes, microwaves, etc.
Most of them are wild animals, but can be kept as exotic pets
As they grow, they mimic bigger and bigger things, with the treasure chest size being the biggest. Technically, they never stop growing, but as they age, growth and mimicry become a larger and larger burden. Nearly every mimic dies of old age before it can even begin to mimic something bigger than a chest.
Imagine a venus flytrap crossed with a hermit crab
Gargoyle
Carved from a special magic rock that comes alive when crafted
Behave like magic pigeons, flying down from buildings to beg for pebbles
Are also kept as pets. Some are even specially commissioned!
Basilisk
Created by a chicken hatching a reptile egg
Giant serpentine creature with chicken features, poison breath, leaves a trail of venom wherever it slithers, and is able to kill with a glance
Often confused with a cockatrice
Cockatrice
Created by a reptile hatching a chicken egg
A giant chicken with serpentine features, with similar powers to the basilisk, including being able to kill by glancing at its targets
Often confused with a basilisk
Phoenix
Classic phoenix, the bird that dies and comes back to life from its own ashes
Although it appears to be "coming back to life" it's actually how the phoenix reproduces in stressful situations—the new baby bird is a genetic clone, not the same animal
A well cared for phoenix should NOT be regularly bursting into flames
Jackalope
Bunny with antlers <3
Often kept as pets
Wolpertinger
“The most widespread description portrays the Wolpertinger as having the head of a rabbit, the body of a squirrel, the antlers of a deer, and the wings and occasionally the legs of a pheasant.” (thanks Wikipedia)
Often kept as pets, but are much more temperamental than a jackalope.
Will-o-the-Wisp
Little blips of magical essence where intense spells have left remnants
Familiar
Can be any animal or combo of animals
Soul-spirit created through magical willpower that calls the latent magic around you into a fully realized form, bonded to your soul and devoted to helping you
Looks like an animal (standard or magical)
Follows you around like a wisp—you can barely see it out of the corner of your eye, but it lights up and becomes more immediately visible when you’re in need of magical aid
Created by a magic user in an intense emotional state, most often completely by accident. You can attempt to call a familiar on purpose, but it’s not common
Can also be created from two or more people having an intense emotional/magical experience together/when their spells interact. The resulting familiar will be loyal to all parties involved
In the event a familiar has to help more than one bonded individual at once, it can fracture into less powerful mirrors of itself, and snap back together once aid is no longer required
When not in helper mode, the familiar will remain in a quantum state, everywhere and nowhere at once, until one of its soul-bound partners needs its assistance

oh, well to simplify it, there's like four body classes of Draco's
Dragons, wyverns, drakes and wyrms.
Dragons are the most prevalent and well-known members, with them described as having six limbs. Their front two legs, their back two and their set of wings, and often described as having talons, armor plating, razor sharp teeth and other reptile features. Though not all dragons have six limbs, as eastern dragons fly with the support of magic making them due to have four limbs only.
Wyverns, on the other hand, are much alike to dragons but with the lack of frontal legs and which use their wings as support for most activities, if it be standing, running, flying, all the sorts of movements.
Now now, Next up are what you questioned- Drakes. Drakes are described as lacking wings and flight but still counting as dragons, due to many features of the alike said above. Armor plating, Scales, teeth and much more. They either move like canids or move bipedally. More than often, they pack up like canid's Aswell for better chances with prey items as Drakes are more than often roughly the size of an adult timber wolf.
One last class is Wyrms.
Wyrms are as you can assume-Wormlike or snakelike Draco's that have only two limbs: Their pair of wings for nearly everything. Mostly their tail drags behind them because of the lack of back leg support. Though one may not be fooled, because Wyrms are intellectual and strong Draco's, making them difficult opponents.
Hopefully you listened in about my little informative talk of Draco's, was just wondering in case you were actually a Drake instead of a typical Dragon, sorry if i yapped too much but here you go, now you can tell the difference inbetween Dragons, Wyverns, Drakes and Wyrms. :D
OH, WELL THAT'S SUPER INTERESTING, ACTUALLY ! IF I'M TOTALLY HONEST, I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT I AM PART OF, SO I'VE ALWAYS JUST ASSUMED IT'S JUST A DRAGON. A DRAKE WOULD MAKE SENSE, HOWEVER, AS IT ISN'T EXACTLY THE DRAGON PART OF MY THAT ALLOWS ME TO GLIDE WITHOUT A CARE !

Modern Monsters 9: Lesser Dragon (Dragonet)

The modern world has very little space for giant monsters to roam the land.
If any of the large sapient lizards - the greater elemental dragons, fire and ice drakes, wyverns, wyrms, or any others you can think of - still live today, they certainly don’t venture far from their inhospitable hiding places. Human settlements have encroached too far into the wild edges of the lands. Even the skies and seas are not entirely untouched.
However, just as the more widely-known living fossils like coelacanths and tuataras continue to survive, if one knows where to look, there still remain small populations of dragonets scattered across the globe. They have adapted through necessity to living on the quieter edges where human influence, though undeniably present, begins to fade into wilderness.
Like their larger relatives, these small creatures are sapient and have some influence over the elements. However, these lesser dragons branched off quite some time ago from their more powerful and more intelligent giant cousins. Even the most unusually large dragonets are no bigger than a small domestic cat.
Consequently, their abilities don’t quite match up to dragons of medieval lore.
Dragonets have a level of intelligence roughly equivalent to a young human child.
They understand human languages well but may struggle to articulate themselves fully, given that inter-dragonet communication uses an intricate combination of scents, pheromones, scale colour changes, and elemental flares such as barely detectable atmospheric pressure changes alongside any vocalisations. As a result, they only have so much patience left for polishing up their grammar.
It’s really anyone’s guess whether it’s the brain equivalence to a small child or the genetic link to greater dragons that makes them so temperamental and so keen to hoard shiny things for themselves.
The different populations of dragonets have started diverging into subspecies at this point, with different types showing different elemental affinities.
The pictured specimen’s tendency to leave trails of frost lacing from its path may seem to imply that this type throw ice magic out into their environment, maybe because they love the cold. The fact of the matter is, the opposite is true - they just like to keep warm, and their bodies absorb heat from around them to such an extreme degree that they drop the temperature of everything around them. They are far less snappy and more energetic in the summer when their bodies don’t have to work so hard to maintain their preferred high core temperature.
More than one shrewd hedgewitch has picked up on this, over the years.
The promise of a warm fireside for the winter, along with all the cat food pouches they can eat, has been quite effective in convincing frost dragonets to form a partnership of sorts.
They still need to be treated with respect, and they must have free access to the outdoors, of course; draconians of any size cannot tolerate captivity. However, they can bond with the right sort of humans, and those that do so quickly learn that they rather enjoy a ride in a shirt pocket or on a shoulder when offered.
It is also well-known among such favoured witches that dragonets are surprisingly good with their children, particularly their little girls.
A lesser dragon is still a dragon, after all.
And dragons do so love a princess.
~~~
This time around the picture came first. I just really love dragons, and wanted to dream up a way a pocket-sized one could exist. Once I saw its face, I knew I wasn’t going terribly verbose on the poem this time.
It doesn’t often talk to humans, but it’s trying its best.
I’ve also seen “dragonet” sometimes used to refer to baby dragons, so let me be absolutely clear that yes, I’m using that here as a separate species name, and this is a full-grown adult one ready to fight you for that shiny bottle cap.
I love bearded dragons, so I went straight to that as my baseline for the picture. Which I dedicated far too much time to, as usual, but hey, I’m pretty happy with this one.
I've seen people getting confused about types of dragon-like creatures, so I made an oversimplified chart to help people Identify what "type of dragon" they're talking about.
Couldn't remember any pop culture wyrms:(
Some honorary mentions, and a correction to drake:
Lóng is a chinese dragon, it is very similar to drake but have some differences, one of them is size, drakes are usually small like mushu from mulan, shenron is a lóng not a drake, I was debating on whether to put drake or lóng in the graph, and somehow managed to write drake, and put a picture of a lóng.
There are three types of hydras, aquatic, lernaean, and terrestrial, with 0, 2, and 4 legs respectively. Lernaean hydra is the one hercules killed.
Dragonnet is basically a small dragon, sometimes you'll see people also calling them drake.
Quetzalcoatl is an amphithere type of dragon, but it is usually feathery, and comes from mesoamerican culture.
Aido whedo is an african dragon, usually depicted similar to wyverns, and comes from vodunism.
Apep is a wyrm-like dragon from egyptian mythology
Blake: Hey Yang? I'd still love you if you were a wyrm!
Yang: ... Thanks?
Blake: ... Wyrm? Like the draconid?
Yang: Is that Like a dragon?
Blake: *sigh* The four Draconids are:
Blake: Dragons; Four legs and wings
Blake: Wyverns; Two legs and wings
Blake: Drakes; No legs and only wings
Blake: and Wyrm; four legs and no wings.
Yang: Huh. That ... Is a clever pun! I wish I had understood it.
Jaune: ... I thought it was funny.
B+Y: Shut Up Jaune.
What is your favorite type of animal to draw?
Honestly?? I love drawing, like, dragons👀 Mostly four legged ones with wings but I also love my eastern dragons, drakes, wyrms, all that! Surprisingly, I’m not a huge fan of drawing wyverns, it’s just so complicated for some reason💀
Along with dragons, I adore drawing horses (and ponies too :3), small cats, big cats, dogs, wild dogs, wilder dogs and, ofc, SNAKES
