With more automated traffic cameras being installed across Toronto, a city committee is set to consider a move that would strip drivers of the ability to fight tickets issued by the cameras in provincial court. The report, written by staff and to be considered by the infrastructure and environment committee next week, recommends an extension to the "administrative penalty system” to include tickets issued by automated traffic cameras. If adopted, anyone ticketed by a red light camera or automated speed enforcement camera after Nov. 24, 2024 will no longer be able to fight their ticket in a provincial court. Instead, they will be directed to an administrative penalty system, headed by municipal hearing officers rather than judges.

Listen, if you work in the US please just listen for a second.
I think it goes without saying the job market is in utter shambles. If you're working or job hunting please please please take some time to familiarize yourself with the workers rights laws in your state. We will never make headway in advancing our rights if we don't understand and advocate for the ones we have.
there are a lot of things to watch out for, but this is one many people don't seem to know about. I definitely didn't until uh. recently. (I'm not an expert, and this is not professional legal advice, I'm just sharing my experience within my own state and situation. Check your state's Department of Labor website for resources/info)
Please be aware that some jobs may try to hire you as an independent contractor. If you aren't seeking contracted work, this is a RED FLAG.
In very basic terms, and employee is your typical job. You get a W-2 at tax season, and taxes are taken out of your paycheck automatically. Your boss sets your schedule and duties, and provides the training and tools to do your job. You have no ownership of the business, and they set the rules.
If you are an independent contractor, you are essentially a business owner. You can be hired to provide a service, which is done on YOUR terms. You provide your own equipment, hire your own team, prepare your own taxes (probably a 1099), and the person paying you can't train you or tell you how to do your job.
If those criteria are not being met, but you've been hired as a contractor instead of an employee, you may have been illegally misclassified.
Why do employers do this? Basically, employees are promised certain legal rights and protections, which do not necessarily apply to independent contractors. So sometimes businesses will try to (illegally) get the best of both worlds by hiring you under their terms (setting your schedule, duties, etc) without the liability, expenses, or insurance and tax burdens of hiring an employee. Then at tax season, YOU owe the IRS a shit ton of money, and you have no writeoffs because of course you don't. you don't have business expenses for someone else's business
if you think you've been misclassified, or have experienced ANY mistreatment at work, please speak with a professional.
Talking to a lawyer may seem intimidating and expensive. But many employment lawyers offer free consults. They will hear you out for free, and tell you if you have a case.
In my personal experience, my lawyer met with me and reviewed all the evidence and info I had. They contacted my previous "employer" and their legal counsel on my behalf for free. They negotiated a settlement for me, and all I owed them was a percentage of that settlement. If they couldn't get me anything, I wouldn't have owed them anything.
These are just things I wish I had known earlier, so I'm sharing in case it can help even one person not get fucked over. Advocate for yourself. Unionize your workplace. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

I'm tired of forms of flamboyant self-expression being regulated and relegated to a very specific "time and place." I'm tired of worrying about policy changes in businesses targeting supposed "extreme" self-expression and being forced to leave public places due to discrimination. I'm tired of face paint being regarded as a safety issue regarding face obscuring/concealment as though it's not a crucial part of personal identity expression. I'm tired of school and workplace discrimination.
Not everyone who has a very flamboyant appearance wants to be a rock star or performance artist. Some of us want to practice Medicine, Law, or be a government official of some sort. Yet there are no activism or advocacy or other social movements pertaining specifically to flamboyant self-expression through appearance. Why is this? Even on Tumblr, this particular social activism issue is greatly overlooked as though it's not an important and fundamental human right.

Funeral Representative Designation
*Note not a lawyer and it can change by state* I’m putting this information out there because we almost had a huge issue because we weren’t offered up the information we needed by the people who should have brought it up. With everything going on right now in the US I want people to protect themselves.
In going through everything with the cremation there’s a document naming me the “Funeral Representative Designation” because in my state you need all immediate family members to sign off on it to do a cremation. The document means we can skip that because I have the designation. To minimize to the millionth degree there is family drama and I am legally not next of kin so despite taking care of her and living with her for 33 years I can’t make decisions without it.
Why am I being morbid in posting this?- I was thinking what if we didn’t have this and the “family” who have been no contact for decades caused problems because one of them would. Then I was thinking about some of my friends specifically my Trans friends. One of them has a bad relationship with their family and for a moment I was thinking what if something happened, they wouldn’t be treated how they would want if their parents were in charge.
Funeral Representative Designation and Medical Power of Attorney were the 2 docs we needed specifically for my state. If you are getting one done get BOTH! I will also note the crematory did not mention the Funeral Representative paperwork so they did start talking to family until I found the document.
Like I said at the start I am not a lawyer, but if you have a situation like this, I urge you to look into it at least because there is no reason why I should have been disregarded for people who were abusive, but the law isn't always on our side.

Reblogging to help increase awareness!
Before January 2025:
If you are a USAmerican in a relationship that might be affected by legislation that dissolves same-sex marriages, who may no longer be recognized as next-of-kin, especially if you have children, get your rights in writing!
Your marriage certificate may not be enough to prove you have rights to make medical decisions for non-biological children or for a same-sex spouse or partner.
Go to a lawyer, get it spelled out as clearly as possible that you have a voice in emergency medical and legal situations.

What Xenogender means to me is having a nonbinary gender identity that is based on certain experiences and concepts that are not usually associated with "gender" and tend to be considered very much outside of it, where my sense of what's attractive for myself and how I present my gender identity isn't based on the typical gender standards (maleness, femaleness, neither, femininity, masculinity, etc.) and is very much outside of it and Other -- such as looking like a creature or entity and having a highly flamboyant appearance and such. It's about Otherness, and my gender expression is an extremely important part of my Xenogender identity. I often experience Xenogender dysphoria if I am unable to wear my face paint, for instance, which is my most important and meaningful form of self-expression.
