Two expressions people short-change by shortening:
"Blood of the covenant is thinker than water of the womb."
&
"Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back."
The second one makes me think of the Schrödingers Cat Paradox in quantum mechanics.
"Cutting Corners" is another example that has a new meaning. Historically, the term originally referred to the agricultural practice of leaving corners of the field uncut so they could be harvested by the indigent, it was a cultural more that provided community care.
Now we have companies like Monsanto that use their seed patent monopolies as weapons against farmers, suing farmers for "patent infringement".
Corporations don't just abandon the poor, they attack the laborer too. 💰🤑🤢 Late Stage Capitalism is a disease.
I don't want to "Eat The Rich" any more than I want to eat beef with mad cow disease, and I like a good steak as much as the next omnivore. (As an aside: I don't eat beef nearly as much as I'd like, both because cattle are terrible for the environment and because I have to watch my cholesterol.)
The hyper rich are sick. They are addicts and the system of capitalism enables and encourages their greed, their addiction to money and power, and like any 12 Step program will tell you, addiction is a family illness. As a human family, we need to perform an intervention on the wealthy.
Also if you or a loved one is suffering from addiction, a 12 Step Program in your area is a good place to seek help to start you on your recovery journey, there are meetings held all over the globe and phone meetings too. I grew up around 12 Step Programs, they were like my family's religion, and they help a lot of people. If you are in the U.S., here's a helpful website to find out more.

I’m fine with the original concept of honest advertisement but we hardly ever see that anymore and I’m so disgusted by what its turned into that I feel absolutely no remorse in reporting every single ad as offensive or inappropriate. I actually find them all deeply offensive and inappropriate thank you very much

random rant about this scene because I'm sick and tired of this society and I was rewatching the movie.
(this is my own interpretation of what he meant so I might be wrong)
Y'know at first I didn't really clock what he meant because it was a joke and I didn't understand half of his jokes but honestly? Honestly?
Capitalism sucks the life out of you. I'm not even twenty and I'm already so tired, scared of how I'm going to survive on my own when Canada is in a housing crisis, everything is getting smaller and more expensive before my eyes and working any sort of modern day job just seems like a nightmare so I don't really have any dreams.
even looking back to the beginning of capitalism, it was a disaster. I'm sort of studying it in my institutionalization/disabilities course and it was fucked up from the start, set on exploiting the masses until there was nothing else they could give and disregarding those who couldn't contribute in the same way (the disabled, the poor, the elderly, etc)
Back to my point, that thing is like a black hole in the middle of Mumbattern, slowly destroying and sucking the life out a beautiful place.
Capitilism sucks away your creativity and the many things that make you special as an individual.
So yeah. Hobie's throw away line was actually pretty fucking acurate to the reality we live in these days.
On the topic of Canada, Capitalism, and Hobie I feel like it is also prudent to mention that Canadian news and the fact that you have to scour the internet for any shred of news about what's happening in your own damn country reminds me of that one line where Hobie goes "I ain't got a Scooby doo, mate. But that's what they want."
Cause yeah. I don't have a fucking clue what's going on my own country, stop hiding behind america and it's faults while acting like you're perfect, Canada

I've been thinking a lot recently about my disability, the unknown autoimmune disease, and like what could have caused it.
And of course, it could have been spurred by Covid, or stress, or so many other things. But I am of the mind that it could have been caused by my obvious burnout from the above. From covid, stress, and college.
I took about eight years to finish my bachelor's degree. For many reasons. Financial, Needed a full time job and couldn't do both, couldn't figure out a solid major, etc. And once I restarted college at the university during Covid, since I had lost my job at Starbucks at the time, I wanted to go quick. I wanted it to be over with. I wanted to finally FINISH.
So I did full time school for a year, committed to a major and minor. And then my unemployment payments dried up after a year. So I had to do full time school AND a part time job. The job I chose wasn't that bad. I worked part time at a sex toy shop. Sure the company itself left little to be desired (playboy industries). But it was a cool job cause I got to "test out" the toys, (usually meaning like, on my hand, duh), and explain to customers how they could be used. And I felt like I was also actually using my degree during this. (Sexuality and Gender studies).
Then, my senior year I ALSO took on an internship at the Queer Resource Center on my University Campus. And that was an extra 16 hours a week. So effectively, I was juggling THREE JOBS. That, my part time job, and my senior coursework to culminate into a final research project.
You could say I was already within the throws of burnout, cause I was. But I was "keeping up with it". I was getting adequate sleep, I was still on socials, participating in hobbies, doing chores. I *thought* I was *fine*.
The biggest mistake I made, was when I graduated. I started applying to jobs AS SOON as I graduated. I felt this pressure to get more money, to live up to my degree, to contribute more to my household. Even though I was already paying my portion of rent and bills just fine with the part time job. And no one was asking me to do this. Not my parents, not my partner. Just myself.
After a few months, I did land a job. A state job. Applying my degree. It was exactly what I wanted. I quit my part time job. I Committed fully to the full time job (which was three months of mind numbing computer trainings first), and I was good at it.
Then six months in, I crashed.
I started having nightmares, waking up in cold sweats. I started having horrible joint pain. I couldn't think straight during the day and had horrible brain fog. And it only escalated from there. And being neurodivergent too, I was struggling to understand aspects of the in person office, and neurotypical people's attitudes and reactions. That didn't help.
Which brings us here. I'm on leave from the full time job on paid leave until the paid leave ends. And I don't know if I can even go back. From my constantly worsening disease, etc.
I don't really have advice to give, this was mostly a rant for myself. But I guess...if I had to give advice it would be SLOW DOWN.
Please for the love of the gods slow down. The grind mindset is fucking poison. You will hurt yourself. And if you think you won't, you're lying to yourself.
Another thing to add: Yes I acknowledge theres a lot of privilege steeped in this experience. This is just my experience and what I take from it in context of soul crushing capitalism.

One day(assuming we don’t go extinct), people are going to be shuddering in horror at what we ate and how short our lives are. Just like we look back on the miserable shit people were going through in the 1800’s and early 20th century.

Just called to schedule an appointment and an automated voice told me that phones are off for staff lunch every day from 12-1 and to please call back during NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS and I would just like to say, begging, desperately pleading, on my knees, sobbing, can we please universalize this concept that meal times≠normal business hours? that it is NORMAL to not only allow but require that your workers take adequate breaks for self-care? Can this be the new standard everywhere please

Since @andhumanslovedstories and @vaspider reblogged this post just recently I've gotten an influx of new followers. Just to be crystal clear, here is what I believe and here is where I stand. Terfs and other exclusionists are not welcome here.
Using the bathroom in general is a human right and should be enshrined as such and I'm not joking. Too many groups of people are denied bathroom breaks or the use of bathrooms entirely--disabled people, blue-collar workers, children, homeless people, prisoners, students, the elderly. I'm surely missing other groups. Not using the bathroom when needed can cause serious, long-term damage, not to mention death. Free, clean, accessible bathrooms should be available everywhere. It's fucking cruel to deny someone the use of the bathroom, regardless of the reasoning. I'd rather every student in the world goof off and every homeless person make a mess and every worker "steal company time" than let one person suffer because they're denied the right to fucking pee in peace.
