the way caliban and ariel are described in some of the shit I'm running into trying to find a production of the Tempest to watch is kind of sickening tbh. about a 1993 production's Ariel
He spoke and moved slowly and deliberately, maintaining a cold hauteur in all his dealings. There was still an audible gasp from the audience when, in response to Prospero's affectionate words of farewell, he spat in his face. He then stalked away to the back wall of the set and opened a hitherto undetectable door through which he passed to freedom.
omg the guy who was enslaved spat in his former enslaver's face!!!! so cold and mean
Alec McCowen's gentle, school-teacherly Prospero was threatened not only by this unyielding spirit but also by an unusually rebellious Miranda and a terrifyingly muscular and sharp-taloned Caliban
prospero is so gentle and nice you guys i can't believe he was menaced by his mean scary slaves :(((
you know the scene where Prospero tells Caliban he's going to torture him, in detail, for cursing him out. what choice does he have his slave is being SO insubordinate >:(
#tbh i think a cold and standoffish ariel is mostly not a good way to perform him and his design from the pics is bad#but him spitting in prospero's face is everything to me regardless. go off king#their caliban looks like shit though he's just a bald shirtless white guy#the tempest#vic talks

Key points:
Blue text means it's a short story or a novel
The bat 🦇 means Konrad is present
The knife 🔪 means Sevatar is present
Many of these cover a vast timeline: I've put them in this order based on the narrator (example: Vulkan speaking about Nostramo just before Istvaan) or the first chapter (Child of Night starts immediately after Nikaea but ends during the HH)
I ignored books where they appear for 1 line only and do nothing important. I also ignored "Lion: son of the Forest" because that thing is actually a warp-thing and not the real Konny.

Shakespeare, but in Space with Giant Robots and Sapphics!
Yes, this is about G-Witch (Spoilers incoming).
I probably this mention way too often, but I teach English, and occasionally, that means I get to teach Shakespeare too! And what better way to teach Shakespeare than with anime?
Now, if you're a fan of G-Witch, you've probably heard that it's an adaptation of The Tempest, but let's do a quick review just in case.

Miranda - The Tempest (1916), by John William Watterhouse
The Tempest is play written by William Shakespeare around 1610-1611. It's usually classified as a Tragicomedy and centers around Prospero, the former Duke of Milan.
Why former?
Well, Prospero has a brother called Antonio who collaborated with Alonso, the King of Naples, to exile Prospero and usurp his dukedom.
Why is the King of Naples handing out dukedoms in Milan despite being on the opposite end of the Italian peninsula, a region renowned for its intensely antagonistic city-states?
Because shut up. (I have no idea)
Anyway, Prospero is forced into exile on a remote island with his daughter Miranda, but years later, Alonso and Antonio happen to be on a ship passing nearby the island and Prospero shipwrecks them.
How?
Well, Prospero is a literal wizard. (This is maybe why the king agreed to exile Prospero because he was spending too much time reading instead of, y'know, governing.)
So Prospero conjures the titular tempest to wreck their ship, only he doesn't really wreck it, he just separates everyone on board for his vengeance.
See, Alonso and Antonio aren't the only ones onboard. There's also Ferdinand (Alonso's son and the Prince of Naples) and Sebastion (Alonso's brother). Prospero isolates Ferdinand then lures him to his residence on the island where he manipulates the prince into falling in love with his daughter.
Well, it's a bit more like love at first sight between Ferdinand and Miranda, so Prospero actually plays the overprotective dad role to make their relationship more satisfying, which is Prospero's real goal. By marrying the two of them, he essentially reclaims his and Miranda's noble status.
Oh, and he also lures the rest of the ship's passengers into an illusory banquet before trapping and subjecting them to hellish nightmares. Eventually, he lets them out and chides them for their betrayal before revealing that he's married Ferdinand and Miranda. Then he calls the ship back with all of its crew still alive and they get ready to return to "civilized" Italy.
One of the things that makes the ending of The Tempest interesting though is that Prospero also chooses to give up his magic when he leaves the island. Many view this as an metaphor for Shakespeare's own creative powers. After The Tempest, it's believed that Shakespeare stopped writing plays on his own, and when Prospero gives his final speech, he requests that the audience release him from the play.
Anyway, here are the characters in the play:
And here are the characters that actually matter:
Character Portraits from Classical Comics' The Tempest - The Graphic Novel (2009)
Hey, there are two other characters I haven't talked about yet!
Well, their names are Ariel and Caliban.
Sound familiar?

That's right, the Gundams in G-Witch!
In The Tempest, Ariel and Caliban are Prospero's servants. Really, they're his slaves, though Prospero treats Ariel a lot better on account of Caliban attempting to rape Miranda in the past. That being said, the island is actually Caliban's home. In fact, when Prospero and Miranda first arrived, he taught them how to survive on the island before being enslaved.
Prospero frees both Ariel and Caliban at the end of the play, but he spends much of the play alternatively strong-arming and complimenting Ariel into executing his revenge plot while Caliban plots to murder Prospero for his own revenge, forming the comedic subplot of The Tempest.
There's a lot to unpack about imperialism in The Tempest and which aspects Shakespeare reifies and criticizes in the play, but here is a very basic relationship chart to go along with this very basic summary.
SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH WITCH FROM MERCURY???
Well if we turn to the Witch from Mercury relationship chart we get:
And hmm, doesn't that fit like a glove? There are actually a ton of parallels between the two stories aside from names:
Prospera's group, the Vanadis Institute, is betrayed by Delling leading to Prospera going undercover on Mercury
Both Delling and Prospera's daughters also fall in love and get married
Suletta's school bucket list is a parallel for Miranda's fascination and excitement for a "brave, new world"
Suletta's sacrifice at the end of the series disables the local GUND format devices and mirrors Prospero giving up his magic
Vim Jeturk attempts to assassinate Delling and Sebastion attempts to kill Alonso are both supposed allies making a power grab
The GUND bit clones are eerily reminiscent of the host of spirits Prospero also controls
Gundam pilots are referred to as "witches" while Prospero is a literal wizard
Gundams are banned because they cause data storms
And the tension between Earthians and Spacians is a mirror for the exploitation and power dynamics under imperialist rule in much the same way that Prospero's control over Caliban and Ariel is
Now, obviously The Tempest and Witch from Mercury are not 1:1 stories. You may have even noticed that Delling is on the relationship chart twice.
Why?
Well, Witch from Mercury's characters often share multiple roles with their The Tempest counterparts.
Of course Delling is a stand in for both Alonso and Antonio, but we later learn that Aerial is actually Ericht Samaya, Prospera's first daughter, and that Prospera's big goal (aside from revenge) is securing Eri's future and freedom (and the big reason that Ariel goes along with Prospero's revenge plot is because he wants to be free). That makes her both an Ariel and a Miranda analogue.

Prospera is obviously a stand-in for Prospero, but she's also a reference to Sycorax, a character who never makes an appearance on stage, but is the sea witch who gives birth to Caliban and traps Ariel in a tree. Even though Prospera is scheming for Eri's freedom, she's also the person who put Eri in a Gundam frame in the first place, as well as being a Gundam pilot/Witch herself.

Miorine shares Ferdinand's place as the next in-line to a fantastically powerful position, but her relationship with her father is much closer to Miranda and Prospero, not only in terms of gender, but also in rebellion.

And Suletta is actually an amalgamation of 4+ characters!
She's Prospera's daughter and she's filled with wide-eyed wonder at exploring a new world, so she's part Miranda, but she sacrifices her "magic" at the end of the series like Prospero. On the other hand as the Holder, she has to fight for Miorine's hand in marriage to prove herself like Ferdinand does.

But most of all, Suletta is Caliban.

Obviously, Suletta pilots the Calibarn at the end of the series, but more so her character arc mirrors Caliban's.
For one, between Ericht and herself, Suletta is by far the less important of the two to Prospera, similar to how Prospero by far favors Ariel.
She's also mostly* a tool for Prospera's revenge. Of course there are a couple of nods that Prospera, and Ericht in particular, care about Suletta, but she is an Eri-clone and she was created to fulfill Prospera's designs.
But, Suletta also comes into direct conflict with her mother at the end of the series. Her motivations couldn't be any more different from Caliban's, but ultimately, she takes up arms against the person ruling her life in an attempt to reclaim some agency, and unlike Caliban she succeeds.
One of the things I really enjoy about G-Witch is that, despite it's very rushed second season, it reimagines Miranda, Ferdinand, and Caliban in much more active, influential, and sympathetic roles. They aren't just pawns in Prospera's schemes; they have their own agendas and are willing to step far out of line with their inspirations in order to achieve them.
I could also talk about how Miorine and Suletta are more fully realized Anthy and Utena's because guess what?
G-Witch is also a Revolutionary Girl Utena adaptation!

But that's a separate post I need to write.
Coming soon!*
*probably never
So for everyone who thinks that Shakespeare is just a collection of forsooth's and weird toxic romance, I raise you Giant Robot Space Lesbians* (they're actually bi don't @me)

Well here is part two of the books that the DBD characters would read:
First we have Jenny, I think she would read horror classics like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or Dracula, she would probably enjoy black and white movies. I also think she read Harry Potter or Maze Runner and likes to complain about the mistakes in the movies (and about JK, because we can't stand a transphobe in this house). Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici would be an interesting read for her too.
Now, the night nurse would probably get bored waiting for the kids between cases so she would start reading to learn about humans. I feel like she's going to find "those who leave Omelas" and she will be moved and angry by the suffering of the children, and how the book shows some aspects of today's society, she would start reading more books of this type and she would come across Almond. Niko would recommend Miss Peregrine's home and the Peculiar Children because it would would remind him of her, and Charlie would say yes just because no one can say no to Niko.
The cat king, Just like with music, I feel like he would read a lot of books about cats or with catslike Alice's adventures in Wonderland or the black cat by Poe, I mean, the chesire cat reminds me of him. She and her cat by Makoto and Naruki He would read it after what Edwin told him and he would identify with that feeling of loneliness. As for books not related to cats, I would say the Shadowhunters saga, I'm the only one who finds it similar to Magnus?.The Alchemist by Michael Scott, It is also a book that he would read, also Bastet the goddess of cats is a character in this book.
Finally, Monty, I obviously must have recommendations with stars or astros, First the star boy by Chris Pueyo A gay boy's journey of self-discovery as he finds love and faces the world's hatred and prejudices. Narnia (? simply because it has magic, talking animals and the white witch reminds me of Esther. Another book would be what the stars tell by Osied Kelsey It is a book that tells us about the different stars, constellations and other interesting facts. I think if he had had more time to enjoy his life/adolescence he would like reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and learn about what teenagers feel or experience.
Okay, here is the final part of book recommendations, once again I hate you Netflix and please renew DBD.

Mutation: Telekinesis, energy manipulation, telepathy
Notes: Sorry I’ve been so inactive I’m really am tryna finish my Hugh Jackman stories xD

As you lay there on the edge of the large king bed, Charles next to you, Caliban on the small sofa in the room and Logan leaning against the wall looking out the window looking like a guard dog.
You want him to lie down, rest, sleep, the overwhelming urge to be good omega and serve your alpha. You stare at the bedside table a little harshly trying to control yourself and your thoughts, the voices have quieted down and stopped now that you focus on it. Growing up in the omega facility they made you control your powers, forced more like till they discovered a truely mutant canceling agent, so you took too many lessons in controlling your mutations, there had been a few times you sent the guards mad on purpose trying to escape but you would just be sedated till you were willing to cooperate so you gave up and gave in. You see Logan shift a small quiet groan leaving his mouth as you hear his hip pop. It makes you jolt and sit up in worry. The old alphas eyes snap to yours frowning.
“You should be asleep” he speaks softly but gruffly putting on a hard face like he’s not in pain.
“Lie down” you mutter getting off the bed as quiet as you can. He raises his eyebrow at you and you keep his gaze.
“Sit down at least please” you whisper and the old alpha sighs and listens. He sits down carefully the bed dipping under his weight, your mind goes into taking care mode kneeling down and taking his boots off.
“Hey-“ he says surprised but you ignore him taking off his boots and socks and lying them neatly by the bedside table. You take off his jacket too and he lets you, eyes watching you carefully. You fold his jacket and lay it on the bedside table nodding to yourself once you’re happy before gesturing for him to lie down. The old alpha grumbles but does as you say. You nod pleased with yourself you finally got your alpha to settle. The thought runs through your mind, ‘your alpha’ you glance to him seeing as he sighs body tense and no doubt in pain. He closes his eyes as you take up his post by the window figuring someone needs to keep look out. You wonder what he’s thinking about but you don’t peer in his mind, not after what you saw, all that family, the x men and the x mansion. What goes to your mind though is the alpha red headed woman, Jean, her name echoing through your mind like a taunt. She’s dead you saw it saw young Logan dig her claws in her stomach and cry. He was handsome when he was young he’s handsome now in a rugged way. You watch the alphas body relax and his breathing evens out, you’re thankful your own body relaxing as he sleeps. You keep look out eventually sitting down on the floor against the wall. Your head lulls and hangs your eyes closing and body drifting to sleep, you jolt to wake yourself up looking out the window seeing silence. You’re just about to dose off again when you hear it, a helicopter. You’re up looking out the window, you force your mind to reach out, there’s ten soldiers and a whole helicopter.
“We need to leave” you almost scream at the voice by your ear. Logan’s already up, waking up Caliban and Charles picking up the old man.
“Tell Jessica we’re leaving, and to keep her family inside” Logan orders you and you nod as he carries Charles down stairs, Caliban behind him. There’s a shot that rings out though, you half expect pain but feeling nothing till Caliban thuds to the floor. You rush to the mutant, holding the home in his chest waking the family you were staying with.
“They’re here for us stay inside!” Logan orders and growls alpha tone coming through as the mates look to each other and hold their son close.
“I’m sorry” you whisper to Caliban staying by him. Liam rushes downstairs and you hear him talking to Logan distantly as Jessica urges her son in the bathroom. Logan comes back up picking up Caliban too with a grim face. You follow them outside seeing Liam throwing some bags into their truck. Charles is in the backseat and Logan plays Caliban in the tray of the Ute. Liam chucks the keys to Logan giving you a small smile before going into the house again to protect his family. Your heart fills and beats rapidly before you jump into the truck. Logan takes off quickly into the corn fields. Your heart pounds as you look back to the house seeing the soldiers and the helicopter flying overhead. You pray the family doesn’t get hurt. The alpha drives quickly apparently knowing where to go, you assume Liam told him as you end up on a named dirt road.
You’re staring back at the house now distance your eyes going wide the world slowing as a loud explosion goes off the and house goes up in flames. Your heart shatters and breaks you let out a cry before you’re grabbed and brought into the old alphas lap somehow. He’s pushed the seat back got one hand on the wheel the other tightly around you.
“Don’t look” he says pressing your head to his neck in silent order. Your body shakes and you cry against him. His hands on your neck keeping a gently but firm hold as you continue to cry and he continues to drive. Your arms are stuck between your bodies as you try to process what just happened.
As the car finally stops on the side of the road by a forest you slowly wake up from your slumber and mumble incoherently at the warmth under you. You open your eyes feel the warm alpha under you breathing evenly and shallowly, he’s asleep. You glance to the backseat seeing Charles asleep also and you think about falling back to sleep yourself before you realise Caliban is dead in the back of the truck. You sit up slowly from Logan’s shoulder seeing his head leant against the window eyes closed. His arms tighten around you suddenly a frown on his face and you curse yourself for moving. His eyes snap open like a startled animal and you freeze on instinct at the sudden anxiety filled alpha scent let out by him. You act on instinct, cup his cheeks his frown deepening before he recognises you in his waking up state. You brush your thumbs over his cheeks feel the surprisingly soft beard hair he has coating his face. He watches you, like a predator, eyes narrowed slightly as you gently move your fingers through his beard testing smiling softly to yourself before his scent calms down fully. His arms haven’t moved from around you, well sort of around you now that you’ve lifted yourself up. His hands rest on the spot just above hips not gripping anymore just lying there. You want to kiss him. You look to his lips shamelessly and wonder what they’d be like pressed against yours in such a moment. Your eyes move to movement though, Charles moving in the back and suddenly Logan’s guiding you off his lap and onto the passenger side. It stings a little, but you understand as he gets out and helps Charles, takes him to the woods behind some bushes. You sag against the leather in the truck, you need to go to the toilet too, you need a damn shower also, but you’re not going out in the woods on the side of the road.
After Logan helps Charles back in the car he grabs a shovel from the truck and heads back to the forest. You know what he’s doing, digging a grave for Caliban. You get out the truck after a while, close the door gently and head to Logan. There’s a stale scent in the air from him as he digs, muscles tense, his eyes glaring at the earth. You wonder if you should help, see if there’s another shovel but the look Logan gives you is heart breaking and you go to him instead wrap your arms around him and comfort him like any omega would. He keeps one hand on the on the shovel one by his side as you force him to bury his face in your neck. He’s so tense and his body no doubt aches, you can smell the emotions in his scent he lets off, feel them even. He leans into you though and you know you did the right thing as his free hand rests on your back, large fingers spread out as he breathes you in. You don’t expect him to cry even though it would do him good, he’s too tense and out in the open to fully let go, but this, this you can offer him.

James Earl Jones
American actor hailed for his many classical roles whose voice became known to millions as that of Darth Vader in Star Wars
During the run of the 2011 revival of Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy in London, with Vanessa Redgrave, the actor James Earl Jones, who has died aged 93, was presented with an honorary Oscar by Ben Kingsley, with a link from the Wyndham’s theatre to the awards ceremony in Hollywood.
Glenn Close in Los Angeles said that Jones represented the “essence of truly great acting” and Kingsley spoke of his imposing physical presence, his 1,000-kilowatt smile, his basso profundo voice and his great stillness. Jones’s voice was known to millions as that of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars film trilogy and Mufasa in the 1994 Disney animation The Lion King, as well as being the signature sound of US TV news (“This is CNN”) for many years.
His status as the leading black actor of his generation was established with the Tony award he won in 1969 for his performance as the boxer Jack Jefferson (a fictional version of Jack Johnson) in Howard Sackler’s The Great White Hope on Broadway, a role he repeated in Martin Ritt’s 1970 film, and which earned him an Oscar nomination.
On screen, Jones – as the fictional Douglass Dilman – played the first African-American president, in Joseph Sargent’s 1972 movie The Man, based on an Irving Wallace novel. His stage career was notable for encompassing great roles in the classical repertoire, such as King Lear, Othello, Hickey in Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh and Big Daddy in Tennessee Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
He was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi, the son of Robert Earl Jones, a minor actor, boxer, butler and chauffeur, and his wife Ruth (nee Connolly), a teacher, and was proud of claiming African and Irish ancestry. His father left home soon after he was born, and he was raised on a farm in Jackson, Michigan, by his maternal grandparents, John and Maggie Connolly. He spoke with a stutter, a problem he dealt with at Brown’s school in Brethren, Michigan, by reading poetry aloud.
On graduating from the University of Michigan, he served as a US Army Ranger in the Korean war. He began working as an actor and stage manager at the Ramsdell theatre in Manistee, Michigan, where he played his first Othello in 1955, an indication perhaps of his early power and presence.
The family had moved from the deep south to Michigan to find work, and now Jones went to New York to join his father in the theatre and to study at the American Theatre Wing with Lee Strasberg. He made his Broadway debut at the Cort theatre in 1958 in Dory Schary’s Sunrise at Campobello, a play about Franklin D Roosevelt.
He was soon a cornerstone of Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare festival in Central Park, playing Caliban in The Tempest, Macduff in Macbeth and another Othello in the 1964 season. He also established a foothold in films, as Lt Lothar Zogg in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove (1963), a cold war satire in which Peter Sellers shone with brilliance in three separate roles.
The Great White Hope came to the Alvin theatre in New York from the Arena Stage in Washington, where Jones first unleashed his shattering, shaven-headed performance – he was described as chuckling like thunder, beating his chest and rolling his eyes – in a production by Edwin Sherin that exposed racism in the fight game at the very time of Muhammad Ali’s suspension from the ring on the grounds of his refusal to sign up for military service in the Vietnam war.
Lorraine Hansberry’s Les Blancs (1970) was a response to Jean Genet’s The Blacks, in which Jones, who remained much more of an off-Broadway fixture than a Broadway star in this period, despite his eminence, played a westernised urban African man returning to his village for his father’s funeral. With Papp’s Public theatre, he featured in an all-black version of The Cherry Orchard in 1972, following with John Steinbeck’s Lennie in Of Mice and Men on Broadway and returning to Central Park as a stately King Lear in 1974.
When he played Paul Robeson on Broadway in the 1977-78 season, there was a kerfuffle over alleged misrepresentations in Robeson’s life, but Jones was supported in a letter to the newspapers signed by Edward Albee, Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Miller, Lillian Hellman and Richard Rodgers. He played his final Othello on Broadway in 1982, partnered by Christopher Plummer as Iago, and appeared in the same year in Master Harold and the Boys by Athol Fugard, a white South African playwright he often championed in New York.
In August Wilson’s Fences (1987), part of that writer’s cycle of the century “black experience” plays, he was described as an erupting volcano as a Pittsburgh garbage collector who had lost his dreams of a football career and was too old to play once the major leagues admitted black players. His character, Troy Maxson, is a classic of the modern repertoire, confined in a world of 1950s racism, and has since been played by Denzel Washington and Lenny Henry.
Jones’s film career was solid if not spectacular. Playing Sheikh Abdul, he joined a roll call of British comedy stars – Terry-Thomas, Irene Handl, Roy Kinnear, Spike Milligan and Peter Ustinov – in Marty Feldman’s The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977), in stark contrast to his (at first uncredited) Malcolm X in Ali’s own biopic, The Greatest (1977), with a screenplay by Ring Lardner. He also appeared in Peter Masterson’s Convicts (1991), a civil war drama; Jon Amiel’s Sommersby (1993), with Richard Gere and Jodie Foster; and Darrell Roodt’s Cry, the Beloved Country (1995), scripted by Ronald Harwood, in which he played a black South African pastor in conflict with his white landowning neighbour in the 40s.
In all these performances, Jones quietly carried his nation’s history on his shoulders. On stage, this sense could irradiate a performance such as that in his partnership with Leslie Uggams in the 2005 Broadway revival at the Cort of Ernest Thompson’s elegiac On Golden Pond; he and Uggams reinvented the film performances of Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn as an old couple in a Maine summer house.
He brought his Broadway Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to London in 2009, playing an electrifying scene with Adrian Lester as his broken sports star son, Brick, at the Novello theatre. The coarse, cancer-ridden big plantation owner was transformed into a rumbling, bear-like figure with a totally unexpected streak of benignity perhaps not entirely suited to the character. But that old voice still rolled through the stalls like a mellow mist, rich as molasses.
That benign streak paid off handsomely, though, in the London reprise of a deeply sentimental Broadway comedy (and Hollywood movie), Driving Miss Daisy, in which his partnership as a chauffeur to Redgrave (unlikely casting as a wealthy southern US Jewish widow, though she got the scantiness down to a tee) was a delightful two-step around the evolving issues of racial tension between 1948 and 1973.
So deep was this bond with Redgrave that he returned to London for a third time in 2013 to play Benedick to her Beatrice in Mark Rylance’s controversial Old Vic production of Much Ado About Nothing, the middle-aged banter of the romantically at-odds couple transformed into wistful, nostalgia for seniors.
His last appearance on Broadway was in a 2015 revival of DL Coburn’s The Gin Game, opposite Cicely Tyson. He was given a lifetime achievement Tony award in 2017, and the Cort theatre was renamed the James Earl Jones theatre in 2022.
Jones’s first marriage, to Julienne Marie (1968-72), ended in divorce. In 1982 he married Cecilia Hart with whom he had a son, Flynn. She died in 2016. He is survived by Flynn, also an actor, and a brother, Matthew.

King Lear had a happy ending. The Tempest's Caliban got a Lady Caliban. Romeo was sometimes a girl. From the 1660s until the early 19th century, performances of Shakespeare's plays took a lot of liberties… and this helped make Shakespeare the icon he is today.

Ariel on a Bat's Back
Artist: Henry Singleton (English, 1766–1839)
Date: Exhibited 1819
Medium: Oil paint in canvas
Collection: TATE Britain, United Kingdom
Description
This picture depicts Ariel, the magical spirit in Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. It was first exhibited accompanied by lines from Ariel’s last song: ‘On the bat’s back I do fly, After summer, merrily.’ Singleton’s decision to paint this entertaining and theatrical subject was a response to popular tastes of the time. The artist had begun his career as a promising history painter but many felt he did not realise his full potential.
The Tempest Summary
Prospero uses magic to conjure a storm and torment the survivors of a shipwreck, including the King of Naples and Prospero’s treacherous brother, Antonio. Prospero’s slave, Caliban, plots to rid himself of his master, but is thwarted by Prospero’s spirit-servant Ariel. The King’s young son Ferdinand, thought to be dead, falls in love with Prospero’s daughter Miranda. Their celebrations are cut short when Prospero confronts his brother and reveals his identity as the usurped Duke of Milan. The families are reunited and all conflict is resolved. Prospero grants Ariel his freedom and prepares to leave the island.

Esoteric+Divine Composite: Suletta
Suletta's position as an amalgamation/twist on Miranda and Caliban is obvious along with Utena. But what are some of the lesser known? She's a character shaped with symbology ranging from norse and greek myth to alchemy. Fenrisulfr, Hercules, Hermes/Mercury, and the Red King.
Fenrir
I've already broken this down a bit in a previous analysis, and in light of the finale, she finally fulfills the Ragnarok prophecy.
The freed wolf who eclipses the 'sun', heralding an end to the Gods(Benerit and SAL)
And her method of devouring Odin Miorine is consuming her in holy matrimony as the new cycle of the world is born.
Hercules
This one might be a surprise, but it's true. Suletta is undeniably coded with Heracles/Hercules symbolism, beginning with his 12 labors. In the very first episode of GWitch, she slew the invincible Nemean Lion and 'skinned' his coat
And her final labor is the subjugation of Cerberus, the multi-headed dog of the underworld.
Take note, before Hercules descends and encounters Cerberus, he's inducted into the cult of Demeter and Persephone. Notrette as Anesidora is revealed to be our Demeter, chthonic goddess of agriculture. And prior to this battle, Suletta speaks with the Persephone of our tale, inducting her within the mysteries.
You can draw other parallels between the various herculean labors and Suletta's duels. Such as the Grassley battles echoing that of the Hydra or Elan/Peil as the man-eating Stymphalian birds.
Suletta's godlike strength suddenly doesn't seem like an accident, does it?
So why was this done, other than for fun symbolism? The answer all boils down to Hermeticism, as it often seems to. Specifically this painting of Hercules, called Allegory of Wisdom and Strength
I'm unsure if it's common to interpret this image as another symbol of As Above, So Below but it's clear to me Okouchi has. We have Hercules focused on earthly matters while the greek personification of wisdom, Sophia, is focused heavenward. The light of enlightenment crowns her brow. Both are in frame and not in conflict; As Above, So Below. Coincidentally (or not) Sophia is one possible ciphered translation for Baphomet; a blatant esoteric symbol of perfect unity.
Mercury/Hermes
This is of course obvious considering its in her name, but there's one mythological parallel I want to highlight. The tale of Persephone/Kore. It was Hermes who descended into the underworld and retrieved the 'defiled' Persephone, escorting her safely above and reuniting her with her mother
Suddenly, Shaddiq's dramatic comment about Miorine's defilement doesn't seem so off-color. They were intentionally harking to Persephone Mio who was taken by Hades, Prospera here.
The Red King
I've already discussed this a bit here, but let's recap. Suletta is derived from Soletta. Her signifying colors are Red and Gold as Holder, both key to the Red King. She was 'eaten' by a lion (aqua regia solution) before being reborn, her metaphorical sun blackened with despair (dissolving).
All of it culminating into a Great Work, banishing gundams, defeating SAL, and saving Eri; her Filius philosophorum (Philosopher's Child) All miracles.
Oh and finally married her White Queen ofc, though their union was cemented with a tomato by then. In GWitch's version of Theogony Hermes wed Persephone, accomplished the 12 herculean labors, created a philosopher's stone, and completed Ragnarok
Note: Considering the proper name of Fenrir, Fenrisulfr, Okouchi might've been trying to be cute. Sulfur girl indeed

*Caliban’s POV*
The fires of Hell burn eternal, but right now, none burn hotter than the jealousy raging inside me. Y/N stood beside Harvey Kinkle, laughing at something he said, her eyes bright with amusement. She reached out, playfully nudging his arm, completely unaware of the way my jaw clenched, my fists curling at my sides.
Harvey. Of all people.
The moral boy.
The boy who had once been Sabrina’s beloved and who, in my opinion, had no business being this close to my witch. I knew, logically, that Y/N’s heart belonged to me. She had chosen me, despite my infernal origins, despite my past mistakes. She was my Queen, the one soul in all the realms who truly saw me. And yet, watching her with Harvey, so effortlessly comfortable, so… familiar, made my blood boil.
I’d had enough.
Striding over, I placed a firm hand on Y/N’s waist, pulling her slightly toward me. She blinked up at me in surprise, but I ignored it, my eyes locked onto Harvey’s.
“Kinkle.” I said coolly. Harvey raised an eyebrow.
“Uh… hey?” Y/N frowned, glancing between us.
“Caliban, what’s with the-” I cut her off, my grip tightening just enough to make a point.
“Tell me, mortal, do all friends look at each other the way you look at Y/N?” Harvey looked bewildered.
“What? Dude, she’s like my sister.” I scoffed.
“Sister? Strange, I was under the impression that siblings don’t flirt.” I groaned.
“Oh for Satan’s sake!” Harvey rolled his eyes.
“Man, I don’t know what kind of weird jealousy thing you’ve got going on, but trust me, Y/N’s the last person I’d be into. No offense.” He added, glancing at her.
“None taken.” Y/N muttered. I wasn’t satisfied. My lips curled slightly, my usual arrogance slipping through.
“Then why do you insist on being so close to my Queen?” Harvey scoffed.
“Uh, maybe because she’s my friend? You know, normal human relationships?”
“Human.” I echoed mockingly.
“That explains it.” Y/N had had enough. She turned, swatting my arm.
“Oh my Satan, stop it! You’re being ridiculous!” I huffed, crossing my arms.
“Am I? Because from where I stand, you seem far too comfortable with another man.” Harvey made a noise of disgust.
“Alright, I’m out of here. You two figure out your weird demon relationship drama.” As he walked away, Y/N turned back to me, exasperated.
“What is wrong with you?” I didn’t answer immediately. Instead, I looked at her, frustration evident in my molten gaze.
“You give him parts of you that should be mind.” She blinked.
“What?”
“You laugh with him, touch him, let him close.” I swallowed hard.
“You trust him.” Her expression softened.
“Caliban… of course I do. He’s my friend, but that doesn’t mean I love you any less.” She stepped closer, placing a gentle hand on my chest.
“You are my King. My partner. The only one who holds my heart.” My jaw tensed.
“Then tell me… why does the sight of you with him enrage me so?” She smiled slightly.
“Because you’re a jealous idiot?” I scowled.
“I don’t like this feeling.” She laughed, tilting her head.
“Welcome to love.” I exhaled, the tension finally easing. I let my hands settle on her waist, pulling her closer.
“Then let me make something clear.” I murmured, my voice lower, more dangerous.
“You are mine. And I do not share.” Y/N smirked, standing on her toes to brush her lips against mine.
“Good. Because neither do I.” And then she kissed me, erasing every trace of doubt from my mind.

Since apartheid ended in 1994, the early promise of the Mandela-led “rainbow nation” has been tarnished by corruption, continued economic inequality and further violence, which Kani believes has led later generations to forget his generation’s struggle. Hence his play, Kunene And The King, in which he plays an oncology nurse for a wealthy white actor — played by fellow South African Antony Sher — who plans to play King Lear but is dying of liver cancer.
Kani was Caliban to Sher’s Prospero in a colonial-accented production of The Tempest directed by Janice Honeyman for the RSC in 2009. “Tony and I had always wanted to act together,” he says, “and I had an idea to write something that would give us a little more meat to chew on than The Tempest.”

WIP ANAGRAM TAG
I was tagged by @primroseprime2019
Find sentences in your WIP beginning with the letters in MANOR (I didn't see a new word, so I'll use yours)
M - “More than five, and yes I did. Although apparently grandfather’s men have made some new ones because I couldn’t find a trace of the old ones. I only got the key up here because I scared the desk clerk more than the rest of you did.” Nic answered, pausing for a moment. “I wasn’t here. Understand? Tell none of them. She’s safe, you’re all alive. That’s all I cared about. I’ll keep grandfather off your asses, but you’re going to have to show up eventually. Let me know when you are and I’ll buffer the reception.” (@behindthesemasks )
A - Adira’s hands made soft fists on the back of Caliban’s shirt as she just relaxed into him. “I’m sorry I keep being such a mess. You don’t deserve this…any of this.” She brought her forehead to rest against his neck, relaxing and letting her eyes close again. It was in his arms that she felt the safest, and she knew that he was going to let nothing happen to her, and absolutely no one near her at the moment. ( @the-andromeda-effect )
N - No matter how much he tried, Emery wasn’t able to hold out forever, though. He was able to keep from begging or crying out. Grunts were all the soldiers got before he passed out, his body limply hanging from the chains that led to the manacles encircling his wrists. For that, the soldiers continued to rain down blows on him even after he had fallen into unconsciousness. It was not as if he could tell the King about it. They often took out their hatred for Branoc on his sons, most people did. (@inopinatus-ea )
O - Once the door was locked, she turned back to the other two men, giving a pointed look to Declan that had him standing up straighter and the smile wiped off of his face. She had a feeling that somehow Spencer and Declan knew about the kiss, but she wasn’t going to let this turn into anything other than what it should be: a respectful situation where the eye of a poor girl who was at that very moment probably being tortured, or worse. “Whatever it is that you find amusing, Detective O’Malley, I suggest that you get it out of your system or get out of my suite. There is nothing amusing or funny that ever takes place in here, this is no exception.” Her tone was chiding and it had both Spencer and Karsten raising eyebrows. Head ME Cavenaugh was taking charge of her autopsy suite and heaven help anyone that got in her way. ( @bendingthelaws )
R - “Rhys, I didn’t think you were going to be back until later. I’m sorry. I didn’t burn you, did I?” Adalicia was concerned, but then hearing his light laughter was relieved that she hopefully had not. She attempted a smile as she looked up at him, not quite sure if she accomplished it. ( @graeadalicia part of @theimperiumchronicles )
