Dc x Dp Prompt #23: The Custody Battle Turned Romance
A freshly resurrected Jason is found by Single Dad Danny raising a de-aged Dan and Dani who goes "surely one more kid can't hurt?" and takes him in. Danny helps him deal with his catatonia, trauma amnesia, and other side effects of being undead without the need for a Lazarus Pit.
He takes the kid to a therapist Jazz recommended and supports him thoughout his recovery. They did some bloodwork and found out pretty early on he was The Jason Todd-Wayne but then he decided not to reach out and let Jason decided what he wanted once he was recovered.
Danny, Ellie and Jordan love and treat him like family in a way he's never quite had before even with Bruce. They’re just so open and honest about their feelings and never make him feel out of place. So when Danny ask if he’d like to reconnect with the Waynes or stay with the them, Jason chooses to stay with them.
The world has moved on around them, and so has the Batfam. Jason knows about Tim (and talked through his feelings in therapy). He knows about the foundation Bruce created in his memory and the way he very publicly grieved. He witnessed the news over Nightwing nearly beating the Joker to death. He knows enough to decided it’s better to let the dead remain dead. Instead, he becomes Jason Nightingale, eldest adopted son of a mechanic in the Narrows. The family welcomes him with open arms officially accepting him as a brother and son.
Danny supports Jason to finish his high school and college education and Jason decides to be a doctor as an homage to Thomas Wayne and aspires open a free clinic like Leslie Thompkins. They get his death certificate revoked under circumstances of resurrection (which is a thing that actually exists in public documents due to the resurrections that tend to happen in the DC universe) and legally adopt him so that he can go back to school. However, Batman monitors public records to a degree and this gets flagged in the system bc it’s Jason’s death certificate.
Suspicious, but optimistic Bruce informs the rest of the family what he has found out and ask them to come as back up for when he goes to find Jason. He’s investigated and is sure that the family who helped rehabilitate Jason is clean and nice people but he wants his son back. They others also wanna see Jason but are worried if this is a good idea since Jason hasn’t reach out himself and there is paperwork for an adoption in the system. But Bruce decides to track them down anyway.
Bruce shows up as the Nightingale’s door and asks to see Jason. Danny, sympathetic, agrees on the condition Jason wants to see him. Jason is hesitant, but decided it would be good way for both of them to get closure and agrees. Bruce and Jason have a tearful reunion and a long heartfelt conversation at the end of which Bruce says “Let’s go home son”. To which Jason has to awkwardly break it to him, but he has no intention of leaving the Nightingale’s and returning to the Manor. He lets him know that he’s open to meeting the rest of the family at least once more but that Danny is his dad now and Ellie and Jordan are his little siblings.
Bruce is devastated.
He lets the rest of the family know and they all make their visits while Bruce wallows in despair. Normally he wouldn let it go, but he just can’t stand to lose Jason another time. So he decides to take Danny to court in the hopes of getting visitation rights if not split custody.
It’s one of the weirdest cases to hit the Gotham courts: two dads who were never together in any capacity but aren’t antagonistic of each other, are trying to come to a custody agreement over their adopted resurrected child in family court.
Over the course of the court case Bruce sees what a good dad Danny is and bonds with his two bio” kids. Meanwhile Danny gets to meet Dick, Tim, and Cass (Bruce’s legal kids as of rn) and gets to talk to them about their experiences with Bruce and how much they want to form/reform relationships with Jason. They do form a healthy respect for each other, and accept each other’s places in Jason’s life.
Court case ends up working out in favor of Danny. It’s split custody but he gets custody of Jason majority of the time (as per Jason’s own wishes) and Bruce and the Wayne's still have partial custody and open contact with the Nightingales.
Over the years kids all start to see each other as siblings and both Bruce and Danny as their dads. By the time Damian shows up Bruce and Danny have been functionally co-parenting each others kids for years. They provide support to each other’s kids that the other parent may not be well equipped to, but helping each other improve.
When Damian does arrive his superiority complex is quickly curbed and Bruce puts him into counseling on Danny and Jason’s recommendation. It takes a while, but Damien slowly finally opens up and gets to act like a real kid. Ellie and Jordan, who are around the same age (maybe a bit younger?), love having him over to roughhouse and play princesses/knights/dragons (but with politics and consequences). Sometimes they’ll go out and trick people into thinking they’re triplets.
It’s actually Damien who first suggests parent-trapping Bruce and Danny so that they can be one big family. He obviously gets Dan and Ellie to agree first. Then the three of them bag Tim and Cass. The five of them approach Dick next. Jason is actually the hardest to convince but the manage to get his approval. Thus, these guys try to set up the Oblivious Danny and the Emotionally Constipated Bruce.
And for Flavor, just when it looks like they’re about to get together, one of their past love interests comes into the mix, re-entering their parents’ live just to stir the pot. (Which ex is up to your imagination: Sam, Talia, Val, Selina, Tucker, Wes, Minhkhoa, Harvey)

The tag "Jason Todd is Red Hood" comes in at 6109 hits btw.
There were many results but I didn't just want to show the most popular ones, so I made a second chart. There are still more tags with less hits I didn't include in the second chart though.
I assume no guarantee or liability for the completeness, correctness and accuracy of this chart despite my best efforts.
Includes fanfictions in all languages available on Ao3, NOT English only.
More charts will follow. :)
Want to have a chart for different pairings, headcanons etc. in your favourite fandom? Send me an ask!
This cracked me up btw:

Chapter One: Peña Dura
I was twenty-two when someone smuggled a castaway into my home. The prison. He was a child. Most men would've thought the child was better off dead, but I thought differently. If he could survive the waters that brought him to Santa Prisca, he'd more than earned the right to receive help. I refused to let him die. "He won't make it through the night," Bird whispered, "I don't know why you waste your time—."
"I spend my days as I please," I whispered as I tended to the child's wounds. "And I disagree... He'll live. You'll see." The child burned with fever, but I would not give up on him.
The child opened his eyes briefly, grabbing my wrist with both hands as he opened his mouth. He wanted to speak to me. Tell me something... But he lost consciousness. He struggled against his sickness for days, and everyone believed he would succumb to his fever. I knew different.
My clothes swallowed him, but I was sure they'd keep him warm through the night. I slept on the floor beside my bed, waking at his every shiver and whine. I woke him up for breakfast and tried to push him to eat. "No—."
"Eat," I commanded. The boy grabbed my wrist with both hands. The look in his eye was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Wild. Untamed. Fierce.
Lightning struck the prison, knocking the power out, and we sat in my cell, staring at one another. His hair plastered against his forehead as illness seeped through his flesh. He wanted to speak. To protest. In the dark of my cell, it was the child's will against my own, and he was unafraid. "Pain," the boy whispered through clenched teeth, and then he released me from his grip. The boy lost consciousness, and my breath returned to me.
"He's not going to make it, Bane," Bird muttered.
"He'll live. I saw it in his eyes," I replied. My eyes were still fixed on the child. "He's stubborn."
And I was right. The boy fought his fever for several days, and on the fourth morning since his arrival, I felt his eyes. I turned to see him standing behind me, reading over my shoulder. "I've read it before... Would you like me to start from the beginning?" I offered. His legs gave, and I caught him. "Sit with me... You're still weak."
He didn't fight with me or protest. Instead, the boy sat quietly on my knee while I read the book aloud from the beginning. Halfway through the first chapter, I received my meal, and we ate together. "I'm Jason… Sorry for eating your food," Jason whispered.
"It's nothing," I replied. Jason was too small to eat a meal by himself. He was no burden to me in that respect.
I liked him. I wanted him to see that. "Where do you come from?"
"Gotham... Where am I?" Jason asked.
"Santa Prisca... Peña Dura," I answered, "You're far from home... When I get to Gotham someday, who should I return you to?"
"I don't have anybody to go home to," Jason mumbled, "But maybe I could show you around when you get there." I smiled.
"I would have it no other way, my friend," I replied.
"What's your name?" Jason asked.
"Bane. What is your name?" I questioned.
"Jason... I'm eleven years old," Jason paused, staring into my eyes before he continued. "And you're the man who saved my life."
"Jason, I didn't do anything. You fought for your life... And you won," I replied.
We talked for hours that day. He told me about movies and music and buildings so ancient, so ornate, and arcane that they seemed like a thing of dreams. Jason intrigued me. I think he intrigued Bird as well. "My church is so huge, and the windows are stained glass... They finally got the bell fixed-. Are you Catholic?" Jason wondered.
"My faith is nothing compared to yours," I replied, "But I suppose I am."
"God doesn't compare... He only loves," Jason whispered. His words were pure. Untainted by ulterior motives or feigned kindness. Jason meant what he said... And it gave me comfort.
*
As the months passed, Jason and I were inseparable. He imitated my behaviors, learned my ways, and with time, I shared my innermost thoughts with him. Jason understood that prison was only a state of mind. He never verbalized this belief, but his actions showed me he could not be imprisoned. Jason was free.
“My church has fruit trees as far as the eye can see and horses roaming free… There’s a lake, and the nuns are all kind. They smile a lot,” Jason whispered.
"My church is a home for all the children the world forgot. My church has no locks or gates. My church is freedom and warmth,” I whispered as Jason curled into a ball beside me. It was a game we played together at night. We described imaginary churches. I suppose most people would’ve thought I kept Jason around as a form of entertainment, but I didn’t. I’d grown to love him as a father would love a son, and I was unwilling to turn him away. He would be beside me in the world I built. He would be the prince of a new era in Gotham. The son they discarded like trash would rise above and become king.
“You don’t belong in prison. You would’ve made a good foster father,” Jason whispered. I looked at him for clarification. “A foster father… When kids lose their parents or when parents lose their kids-. They’re temporary family placements until kids could go home, or sometimes kids that don’t go home get adopted, and the foster family becomes their real family.”
“Could I have been your foster father?” I questioned. “Would you have wanted that?”
“Of course, I would’ve. I would’ve been lucky to have you around. I never would’ve run away if I had somebody like you,” Jason replied, “You’re nicer to me than my father was. Your church sounds like a good foster home...”
“I’d like you to be my son,” I whispered. They were the only words that managed to escape my mouth. Jason looked up at my expression and nodded.
“I’d like you to be my father,” Jason replied, shutting his eyes. I pulled my blanket over his shoulders. “I love you, Bane.”
I swallowed his words. Love. And he meant it. Unselfish love. “And I love you,” I whispered.
Jason drifted away sweetly beside me while I sat beside him, planning. I would rebuild Gotham for both of us. A place where he would never be cold or afraid or forgotten. Gotham would be our church. I moved his curls from his face, watching his expression soften. His chest rose and fell with every breath, and he murmured something in his sleep like a prayer.

I just had an idea. What happened if Jason Todd didn't go to Ethiopia to find his birth mother and was subsequently killed, Jason instead talked it out with Bruce and made up with Dick. He then decided that he didn't need his birth mother because he already had a family. So after that, he decides that once he was old enough to become his own hero, he would pass on the title of Robin, which both Dick and Bruce agreed to. So he instead decides that since the mantles name was Robin, why not continue with the bird theme.
So Jason becomes Woodpecker (because you can not tell me that Jason would not use guns anyways and people have mistaken Woodpeckers for the sound of guns), and Dick decides that he likes the bird theme so he goes as Bluejay. So when Tim comes in and becomes Robin and then gives up the mantle to Damien, he becomes Cardinal.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk 😊
(His new name now is Phoenix.)

Chapter Three: My Church Has Triple Belly Floppers
I’d only been gone a short while before Jason and I were reunited, but Jason seemed much older than his seventeen years. I’d never seen him fight, but he fought ruthlessly and tirelessly. His hair was plastered with sweat, blood, and water as the rain poured on our heads. His eyes seemed so far away as rage twisted his sweet face into a frightening scowl. I don’t think he saw me. I can’t imagine he saw anyone. “Jason,” I called in the rain, knocking men’s heads together. I forced my way through armed men to reach him. “Jason!”
Our men joined me at the helicopter, and I waited. He couldn’t hear me. “Jason!” I hollered, and he scrambled to his feet, smiling as his chest heaved up and down. His face changed, and he looked like my boy again. I stood firm as he rushed into my arms and pressed his face into my chest.
“Papa! You’re alright!” Jason shouted. I wrapped my arms around him, my heart slowing to a gentle bum bum bum. I pulled away, holding a steady hand on his shoulder, and he looked into my eyes. He might’ve grown to be a man with a stature comparable to mine, but he was a child in his heart. I nodded, and he relaxed his shoulders. We joined the men and the warden on the helicopter.
He stood beside me as I exacted my revenge against our warden, but he grabbed my hand before I could offer one act of mercy. “He dies a man’s death in exchange for the imprisonment of children,” Jason whispered as he snatched Osito from the warden.
“Jason—.”
“Papa, he belongs to you. Not him,” Jason interrupted. I nodded. I gave Osito to Jason before completing the warden’s death sentence, and Jason took a bag off his back to dole out rations. “Papa, this is for you.”
I took my food and watched as he fed everyone except himself. “No one eats,” I commanded. Jason and the men’s foreheads wrinkled, but only Jason could ask why. “Everyone take a portion of their rations and give them to Jason.” They obeyed, and I gave him some of my food as well.
I nodded, and we all ate together. All the while, Jason watched me. “What’s wrong?” I asked.
“Nothing… I just—. You can do anything… I guess—. I never met anybody that keeps promises like you do,” Jason replied, “I’ve never had that before. But you did the impossible and got us out.”
I could see the sparkle of tears forming in Jason’s eyes. He tried to return Osito to me, and I shook my head. “He’s yours now. Consider it the first of many gifts to come,” I replied. I mussed his hair and grinned. “Rest. We’ll be home soon.”
Jason obeyed, curled up beside Bird, and fell asleep. I kept watch over Jason the whole flight to New Jersey. Bird made a call, and someone brought us a change of clothes and a key to a hotel room. I carried Jason to bed, and I sat with the men. It wouldn’t be long before I felt the illness setting in. I couldn’t allow Jason to see it, but I’d gotten so used to his company that I couldn’t sleep if we were apart. I tossed and turned all night, plagued by the same dreams that haunted me as a child. When I awakened, Jason lay curled into a ball by my side, a thin sheet covering us both. I could hear him whispering, but he wasn’t asleep. Jason spoke so fast I couldn’t make out his words. He only whispered that way when he prayed. His memory served him well. Those were the prayers he whispered when the men were sick. I memorized his cadence, focusing on the breaths he took to decipher the prayer. “Jason?” I whispered. I sat up, shielding my eyes from the sliver of light peeking through the cracked door, and Jason patted my arm.
“Papa, it’s alright,” Jason mumbled, still half-asleep. He sat up, his hair sticking up in some places while plastered to his forehead in others. He stood and pushed his hair back. “I have to go out for a little while. Will you be alright?”
“Do you want one me to accompany—?”
Jason crouched beside me and kissed my cheek. “No, Papa… It’s a surprise. I’ll be home soon,” Jason whispered, “Don’t worry, okay?”
I nodded, watching as he grabbed clothes from the chest and changed. “Should I stay awake?” I asked.
“I’ll wake you… Besides, I want you to get some rest. I want to take you to my church tomorrow night. Maybe Father Tyler will be there,” Jason smiled. I grabbed his wrist. I fought every desperate thought I had regarding the idea of separating. “It’s my turn to make promises, Papa. I’ll be back soon. I promise you.” I lay awake wondering if he’d return. I had to let him go. Even if he’d broken his promise, I would’ve loved him the same as I always did. But he returned no more than two hours after he left. He carried a large bag with him, but I paid it no mind as I grabbed Jason and pulled him into a relieved embrace.
“Where did you go?” I asked, remembering to be gentle in my tone. Jason picked up on every little change in pitch and tonation in my speech. It was one of many things that I loved about our closeness.
“I made a little cash and got you a Triple Belly Flopper with the works… And I got onion rings because it doesn’t seem right to have french fries with a burger as excellent as this one,” Jason smiled, “And don’t worry. I got something for everybody.” Jason reached into the bag and handed me a wrapped sandwich. My mouth watered as soon as I smelled it.
I chuckled involuntarily. “Sorry, I—.” And then I laughed. “It’s a sandwich. I thought it was a swimmer.”
Jason chewed his lip to keep from laughing but quickly joined me in my humorous moment. “Take a bite,” Jason whispered once he collected himself. He ripped the bag open and grabbed an identical sandwich for himself. We ate quickly, but I savored the last bite. It was unlike anything I’d ever tasted. My first of many convenient culinary delights. Jason smiled as I ate the onion rings. He waited until I’d finished eating to speak. “What did you think?”
I wiped my hands with a napkin and lifted his chin. “My church has Triple Belly Floppers,” I grinned. Jason laughed.
Then it dawned on me. I had no idea where Jason got the money. “Jason, how—? How could you afford this?” I questioned.
“I sold tires… I stole them and sold them. I could’ve gotten more money for a whole car, but tires are easier to replace and harder to trace back to me,” Jason explained, “Besides, I made a ton of money in an hour because I’m stronger than I was as a kid… And you won’t believe whose tires I lifted.”
“Whose?” I questioned.
“The Batman,” Jason smiled. He wanted to make me proud.
“You outsmarted him?” I asked. Jason shook his head.
“No, I took advantage of a distraction in the area. He never saw me… But I saw him. I watched him, Papa. He used to have a friend… A partner… But I didn’t see him. The Bat stands alone,” Jason whispered excitedly. My heart dropped into my stomach.
“Stay far away from him. Do you understand me?” I asked. I grabbed his arms. Jason was my child, but he no longer resembled the small boy I saw. To Batman, he would be another adversary. I couldn’t fathom the thought of Batman brutalizing the one I loved most. My dearest treasure. The men at the prison and the warden were different. They were weak… And they were tools to train Jason for survival… But, none of that readied him to beat the Bat, and I wouldn’t stand for him getting hurt on my behalf.
“Papa? I don’t understand. I thought this was what you wanted,” Jason frowned.
“Leave that to me and the men… For now, I want you to enjoy your freedom. Do the things you’ve always dreamt of… It will all be yours soon,” I replied.
