TL;DR: The reason for their breakup should have been Buck’s use of grand declarations due to his social anxiety and fear of abandonment, and because Buck essentially told Tommy that being with him makes him—Buck—better at being bisexual (or whatever the fuck that weird “marriage” speech was), rather than the reason Tommy cited for ending things: believing Buck would just leave him for someone else.

Tommy had legitimate concerns about where Buck was coming from in this relationship. Also, the character growth should be primarily focused on Buck because Buck is a main (and Stark has a settled and regular contract with the network). Buck should be showing that he can change how he views relationships as tools of personal fulfillment. But the way they set this up necessitates addressing Tommy’s insecurities for a resolution instead, and that is not happening due to contracting and LFJ’s departure from the show. Also, this set up will fail to address how Buck more-or-less viewed Tommy as his gay mentor as opposed to a partner.

All because the show prefers—what?—character regression and re-hashing Buck’s communication issues with Taylor back in SEASON 5?

I actually think they should have stopped going to Miceli’s. I think that place is cursed. Weird vibes. Every time they went, it was awkward.

"humans are inherently evil" "humanity deserves to go extinct" okay. if that's the case why are we such a community based species. why have we seen evidence of careful amputations in ancient humans that allowed them to live longer, fuller lives. why do we have thousands of years of evidence of toys made for children by their guardians. why do we consistently find burial sites where the deceased has been buried with items of significance because the people in their life cared about them even after they were gone. why do strangers help strangers without any reward. why are most of the people you meet each day not cruel. we have ALWAYS been kind. I know it is so so easy to get swept up in all the horrible happenings in the world. these things can be extremely important to know about. but please, please please know that there are so many kind people in the world. you are one of them!

seeing some prophecy discourse which has once again reminded me why i personally find the prospect of dany as the prince that was promised really compelling. and it makes the targaryens so much thematically richer. like, they only survived the doom through the power of prophecy and then the visions marked them forever and this thing, this blessing which gave generations of targaryens some existential meaning eventually morphed into a curse which brought so many of them great misery—"my brothers dreamed of dragons too, and the dreams killed them, every one." (aemon, affc) and in due course almost ended their line once again with rhaegar. but then dany happened.

almost four hundred years since the doom when prophecy saved them and nearly killed them again on the trident, dany was born. dany who carries echoes of all her targaryen ancestors within her. she's aegon the conqueror come again but she's also maegor the cruel when she promises the khals who had hurt her khalasar would die screaming. she's rhaenyra in her struggles to wield power and establish legitimacy as a woman, she shares her sense of egalitarianism with egg, and she drinks from the cup passed from rhaegar, i.e. inherits (what he once thought of) his narrative destiny to help defend the realms during the long night.

dany who is both their beginning, since she's the first targaryen created and introduced to us on page and the narrative end point of their dynasty. which reflects all the way into her arc being cyclical by design as it calls back to the foundation of the valyrian empire in essos—during the fifth war the freehold torched old ghis with dragonfire so nothing would grow there again and centuries later this girl, the last dragon, is going to help plant trees there again. it's not about retreading old ground or rejecting her house words but about redefining what it means to be the blood of the dragon. which is not to say all that came before her was meaningless since this recontextualisation is only possible through the three centuries of ancestral history weighing on her. and dany's very existence echoes back in time because the prophecy itself has influenced the lives of generations of targaryens. three hundred years of history, all the glory and the horror concentrated in this one person-point. the prince that was promised not simply as a figure of the long night but as someone who is the apotheosis of their house. dany as both their beginning and their end, because the iron throne is presently a symbol of stagnation, a world in stasis, and it has to go. no restoration, instead the old world dying in fire and a new world being born in the aftermath.

something interesting i realized while on the vessel-making screen in the deltarune introduction is that it's physically impossible to make kris: there is no hair that perfectly matches theirs (none have the cowlick or the right jagged shape on the bottom), and there is no sweater that perfectly matches theirs (none have a single stripe). this is fascinating, as it perhaps suggest that, if we (the player) had a choice, we *wouldn't* make kris. they aren't something we want, or are even capable of wanting, rather something we're stuck with.

and i suppose the fact that they can't be *created* as a vessel is telling, because we didn't create kris -- they weren't made for us, they're not a player avatar. they're a pre-existing person we just happen to gain possession of.

we weren't made for each other; they don't want us, and we don't seem to want them either (if the inability to choose to create someone like them says anything); funny, then, that in a way we're "soulmates"...

Dearly beloved in today's installment of "I want to crack Tom King's brain like an egg", I cannot stop laughing:

First of all, leaving aside the attempted The Killing Joke parallels. Leaving aside that the entire story, Joker was presented as an utterly inhuman monster who spoke only in old-time movie cards and pretty much only laughed, and Bruce had to be the one talking, had to be the one chasing because he could not understand this creature for the life of him; and the first time Joker has a speech bubble and is portrayed as a human being is when Bruce tells a joke because he wants to connect. Leaving aside the plethora of things that are driving me insane about this comic on a symbolic level, all the ways in which it directly spells out that Batman and Joker are monsters who are alone and what they want from each other is understanding...

Bruce telling the WORST JOKE OF ALL TIME and then laughing at his own joke, which is so bad that the Joker himself is like "What the hell?? You're insane!" is the funniest possible fucking thing. I'm never going to recover, I wanna hunt King down for sport in the worst and best possible way--

I love how a well-written romance is so often structured as a mystery. A person starts with a certain idea about another person, and over the course of the story, they uncover more evidence that gives them a fuller picture of who the other person truly is. They learn about layers to the personality and backstory that give the other person more depth. They learn how the other person's personality meshes with theirs. Even the third-act misunderstanding fits the mystery structure--it looks like they've uncovered the final secret to the other person's identity, which is that they're not the worthy person they seemed to be, but then discover that they misinterpreted that evidence, or the other person takes steps to apologize and repair the level of trust. When the mystery is resolved, they've reached a full understanding of each other and know they've found a partner they can trust their whole future to.
