horrible children who are. so so mean to each other
#tlt#the locked tomb#my art#precanon griddlehark dynamic is SO funny. the way they are just no-holds-barred absolutely AWFUL to each other.#the fact that harrow made fun of gideon for saying 'i love you' over her dead mother's grave so gideon nearly choked her to death#and then when gideon recalls this story in gtn she's just like 'yeah lol we were wild kids'#also remember when gideon responded to harrow being kind of bossy with 'your parents must have been so relieved to die' like#imagine saying that knowing full well her parents killed themselves in front of her when she was ten!!!! insane!!#there's no sense of going 'too far' between them. they casually hit what would be considered by most ppl to be 'too far' and then keep going#anyway i don't usually go in for characters-being-kids-together stuff but i will admit that childhood gid+harrow#following each other around absolutely terrorizing each other because they're desperate for each other's attention but also full of#hatred and vitriol#does compel me#like...2 very lonely very traumatized children with only each other for company. what will they do? ENDLESSLY TORTURE EACH OTHER!!!#and yet they are each other's emotional support person. its so good.

the fact that iron bull opens his recruitment conversation with pretending he doesn't quite remember the name of the the inquisition's ambassador. Jose-what's-her-name-again. he's just a big dumb jock no thoughts head empty mercenary who likes fighting and drinking don't worry about lil old me inquisitor! I'll hit things for you if you'd like as long as you pay me! ],) and then right after he reveals he's a spy he drops that he knows not only the name of your spymaster and how she operates but also her haircolour. 1.02 // 1.06 // 1.08 The Stranger vs. Sol on recognizing and differentiating Osha and Mae
#the acolyte#theacolyteedit#starwarsedit#osha x qimir#oshamir#osha aniseya#qimir the acolyte#sol the acolyte#star wars#mae aniseya#sometimes i make things#the acolyte dragging me back to fandom and gifmaking#i am not back on tumblr except i am just for this#i have a couple other gif ideas we'll see if i end up making them#there's something about sol's paternalistic attachment to osha leading him to tunnel vision when it comes to her#mae as an extension of osha#mae as the version that went wrong; corrupted;#whereas the stranger recognises and treats them as different people almost right away#and there is something so compelling to that#that even the person who claims to love you (and does love you in his own way) struggles to even recognise you#and will always see you as that little girl on brendok who needs saving#the stranger sees the parts of her that were unwanted; acknowledges her grief and anger and trauma#whereas the jedi and by extension sol saw that as a threat#ANYWAY im done i dont know anything about star wars except that i need this to be renewed asap

hopeless time loop. the way out isn’t to save everyone. the way out isn’t to save even one person. the way out isn’t to change anything. the way out is accepting how it happened the first time is how it always will be. that’s how you acted, that’s how they acted, that’s how you would have acted every time if you weren’t given the curse of hindsight. the way out is accepting you can’t fix the past; you can only forgive yourself for it.
#there's this game i love called little hope that plays with these ideas (though not with a time loop)#i do love time loops narratives that explore how a person is confronted with their life and their choices#when forced to live the same day over and over again#and i LOVE time loops that try to reverse mistakes made and lives lost#but to see a character put themselves through loops upon loops upon loops#trying to rectify past mistakes (especially in the case where people died) only to be confronted with the reality it isn't working#and even in a loop where they save everyone the loop just resets#because the universe is essentially saying 'no that isn't how it happened and you know that's not how it happened'#it compels me!#i feel similarly about time travel where time 'fights back'#like this idea that there is a central timeline that time does not like being diverted from#so it will try to course correct itself#you save lincoln from an assassination only for him to die in a train crash#it's a cool way to confront the idea of fate#anyway all tragedies are hopeless time loops thank you for coming to my ted talk#a shout into the void#1k#5k#10k

"humans are inherently evil" "humanity deserves to go extinct" okay. if that's the case why are we such a community based species. why have we seen evidence of careful amputations in ancient humans that allowed them to live longer, fuller lives. why do we have thousands of years of evidence of toys made for children by their guardians. why do we consistently find burial sites where the deceased has been buried with items of significance because the people in their life cared about them even after they were gone. why do strangers help strangers without any reward. why are most of the people you meet each day not cruel. we have ALWAYS been kind. I know it is so so easy to get swept up in all the horrible happenings in the world. these things can be extremely important to know about. but please, please please know that there are so many kind people in the world. you are one of them!
I BLOCK DEBBIE DOWNERS ON SIGHT. REEVALUATE YOUR WORLDVIEW OR SCROLL PAST AND HAVE A LOVELY DAY ALSO READ MY TAGS
#hopepunk#I HAAATE SEEING THAT SENTIMENT. MAKES ME SO SAD AND IT IS SO UNTRUE#just think about the ratio of kind to nasty people in your life#EVEN IF ITS 1:1. which would be terrible and I hope things get better for you if thats the case#thats STILL. 50% kind people in your life#humanity is not inherently evil that is a tragic way of thinking that gets us nowhere#it doesnt sound as dramatic or compelling as you think it does#because its just. such a reductive way of thinking#and by thinking that way you stop believing that positive change is possible#listen to my gibberish boy#death mention

seeing some prophecy discourse which has once again reminded me why i personally find the prospect of dany as the prince that was promised really compelling. and it makes the targaryens so much thematically richer. like, they only survived the doom through the power of prophecy and then the visions marked them forever and this thing, this blessing which gave generations of targaryens some existential meaning eventually morphed into a curse which brought so many of them great misery—"my brothers dreamed of dragons too, and the dreams killed them, every one." (aemon, affc) and in due course almost ended their line once again with rhaegar. but then dany happened.
almost four hundred years since the doom when prophecy saved them and nearly killed them again on the trident, dany was born. dany who carries echoes of all her targaryen ancestors within her. she's aegon the conqueror come again but she's also maegor the cruel when she promises the khals who had hurt her khalasar would die screaming. she's rhaenyra in her struggles to wield power and establish legitimacy as a woman, she shares her sense of egalitarianism with egg, and she drinks from the cup passed from rhaegar, i.e. inherits (what he once thought of) his narrative destiny to help defend the realms during the long night.
dany who is both their beginning, since she's the first targaryen created and introduced to us on page and the narrative end point of their dynasty. which reflects all the way into her arc being cyclical by design as it calls back to the foundation of the valyrian empire in essos—during the fifth war the freehold torched old ghis with dragonfire so nothing would grow there again and centuries later this girl, the last dragon, is going to help plant trees there again. it's not about retreading old ground or rejecting her house words but about redefining what it means to be the blood of the dragon. which is not to say all that came before her was meaningless since this recontextualisation is only possible through the three centuries of ancestral history weighing on her. and dany's very existence echoes back in time because the prophecy itself has influenced the lives of generations of targaryens. three hundred years of history, all the glory and the horror concentrated in this one person-point. the prince that was promised not simply as a figure of the long night but as someone who is the apotheosis of their house. dany as both their beginning and their end, because the iron throne is presently a symbol of stagnation, a world in stasis, and it has to go. no restoration, instead the old world dying in fire and a new world being born in the aftermath.
#linked that dragons planting trees post because i'm afraid someone will show up in the notes to say “dragons plant no trees” 💀#sorry to be a cringe prophecy poster but the themes and symbolism got to me.#and yeah i recall “r'hllor shows me only snow” i'm not saying it can't be jon in any capacity just that i find this thematically compelling#and this is not to say jon's irrelevant or that his targaryen heritage would mean nothing for his character#but in the five books so far the heart of his story are the free folk. the cup being passed from mance. and he does drink from it#the echoing all her ancestors thing happens to a lot of characters. archmaester rigney was onto something with his wheel of time reference#all the accomplished brandons through 8000 years of stark history. bran's namesakes. old nan sometimes confusing him with them.#which could mean nothing.#dany#asoiaf#valyrianscrolls#*[🫀]#melnibonean expys

something interesting i realized while on the vessel-making screen in the deltarune introduction is that it's physically impossible to make kris: there is no hair that perfectly matches theirs (none have the cowlick or the right jagged shape on the bottom), and there is no sweater that perfectly matches theirs (none have a single stripe). this is fascinating, as it perhaps suggest that, if we (the player) had a choice, we *wouldn't* make kris. they aren't something we want, or are even capable of wanting, rather something we're stuck with.
and i suppose the fact that they can't be *created* as a vessel is telling, because we didn't create kris -- they weren't made for us, they're not a player avatar. they're a pre-existing person we just happen to gain possession of.
we weren't made for each other; they don't want us, and we don't seem to want them either (if the inability to choose to create someone like them says anything); funny, then, that in a way we're "soulmates"...
(both pictures are from the deltarune wiki!)
#melonposting#deltarune#deltarune kris#kris dreemurr#deltarune analysis#deltarune theory#kris is such a fascinating person. i want to study them under a microscope#we make them do things they otherwise wouldn't: wonderful things. horrible things.#at the end of the day who will kris be if their actions have been almost entirely us?#what responsibility will they hold for the manipulation and violence we've made them perform?#or what connection will they truly have to the friends we've directed them to make and the good times we've forced them to have?#this is just a random kid at a hard point in their life suddenly directed by an omniscient god with an indecipherable moral compass#kris and the player meant nothing to each other before - but now we hold kris' fate in our hands. we mean everything to them in a sense#and now as we play this game and are compelled by its story - including the things we have kris do - does kris not hold our fate as well?#do they not mean everything to us? (they mean everything to me anyway)#god this game kills me a little bit. god i love it so much

every time i watch anything with him in it (admittingly, predominantly from the Dropout app), i am reminded that Lou Wilson is the most handsome man to have ever lived. like, objectively. he just is. i will hear no arguments for any other person to be ranked higher. Lou Wilson: whose face single-handedly shows humanity can go no higher in beauty. he is THE most attractive man in the world. argue with the wall lmao
#lou wilson#dimension 20#dropout#game changer#i feel compelled to mention this comes from (a) me having had this opinion 5ever and needing it published as i rewatch Neverafter#and (b) that i am on aroace spectrum (im a demi-bi/pan-romantic asexual. mouthful. ugh) so like#the ''hot tingling'' feelings y'all alloromantic-allosexuals get? i dont get those. i feel like this somehow equips me to be#objective while y'all have subjectively biased preferences. dont ask me questions about this flimsy defense. im so objective. all the time#(if you need a tone indicator here: im being sarcastic and joking. i know my queerness does not make me objective. but let me joke about#this because i feel like i am SO RIGHT ABOUT HOW GODDAMN ATTRACTIVE LOU WILSON IS. PUT THIS MAN'S IMAGE IN MUSEUMS TO LAST FOREVERMORE)#how can a man still be hot after voicing Pinocchio. idk. ask Lou Wilson the most beautiful man to ever exist#he's just so stylish and pretty and funny and he has a great smile. A++. put him on the cover of magazines#my post#mine

Dearly beloved in today's installment of "I want to crack Tom King's brain like an egg", I cannot stop laughing:
Batman: The Brave and the Bold #9 ("The Winning Card")
First of all, leaving aside the attempted The Killing Joke parallels. Leaving aside that the entire story, Joker was presented as an utterly inhuman monster who spoke only in old-time movie cards and pretty much only laughed, and Bruce had to be the one talking, had to be the one chasing because he could not understand this creature for the life of him; and the first time Joker has a speech bubble and is portrayed as a human being is when Bruce tells a joke because he wants to connect. Leaving aside the plethora of things that are driving me insane about this comic on a symbolic level, all the ways in which it directly spells out that Batman and Joker are monsters who are alone and what they want from each other is understanding...
Bruce telling the WORST JOKE OF ALL TIME and then laughing at his own joke, which is so bad that the Joker himself is like "What the hell?? You're insane!" is the funniest possible fucking thing. I'm never going to recover, I wanna hunt King down for sport in the worst and best possible way--
#I'll probably make a whole meta about The Winning Card at this point BECAUSE AS USUAL#King's writing just fucking compels me#is it good?? NOT QUITE! does it make me think thoughts?? YES IT DOES#batjokes#batman#bruce wayne#joker#my comic panels#batman: the winning card#king's writing

I love how a well-written romance is so often structured as a mystery. A person starts with a certain idea about another person, and over the course of the story, they uncover more evidence that gives them a fuller picture of who the other person truly is. They learn about layers to the personality and backstory that give the other person more depth. They learn how the other person's personality meshes with theirs. Even the third-act misunderstanding fits the mystery structure--it looks like they've uncovered the final secret to the other person's identity, which is that they're not the worthy person they seemed to be, but then discover that they misinterpreted that evidence, or the other person takes steps to apologize and repair the level of trust. When the mystery is resolved, they've reached a full understanding of each other and know they've found a partner they can trust their whole future to.
#also comedy works along a mystery structure#so a romantic comedy is like a double mystery#two different types of mystery clashing with each other and causing hilarity before the truth is finally revealed#if nothing else this batb diversion will spark some interesting romance thoughts#this came to me because i've been slowly rereading beth brower's 'the q'#and i just hit the scene where quincey gets to observe arch outside of work for the first time#just a lovely moment of revelation#and i think that's the one thing that story does really well#and the author in general is very good at applying this mystery dynamic to all her character dynamics whether romantic or platonic#i rarely find myself able to believe in the strength of her characters' bonds that are supposed to exist before the story started#but the developing relationships are so good because of this endless uncovering of mysteries deepening the bonds in a very compelling way#adventures in writing

psa that the day there are no jgy stans left on tumblr dot com is the day i am dead
but rest assured i'll go to my grave exactly as i lived: obnoxiously proclaiming to everyone within earshot how great lianfang-zun is. narratively, metaphorically, spiritually. sexually, too, like why limit myself. i like to keep my options open
#the spirit of su minshan possessed me for a minute there but like. i'm fine with it#jin guangyao#he did crimes??? good for him 😌#editing this post to add that while the tone here is clearly joking#i really am fundamentally still engaged with this fandom#and with this book#almost exlcusively because of my enjoyment of jgy#even xiyao is secondary for me like i love it and i'm ride or die for it obvs#but jgy as a character is the main draw for me. and he would have me by the throat even if there was no zewu-jun#(tho i think jgy's life would be more depressing for his absence obviously)#but he is just. /clenches my fists!!!#THE most compelling character in the story and i cannot stop thinking about him!! cannot will not!!#who else in this book has his range? who else can be the doe-eyed idealist AND the spy with blood on his hands who ends a war?#who else is two different greek tragedies and at least two separate shakespearean tragedies rolled into one antagonist#an antagonist who but for the POV of the novel could very easily have been the protagonist#whose moral event horizon is so deeply entwined with his own trauma and abuse that there is no way to meaningfully separate#the violence he does to others from the systemic violence that was done to him for his whole life?#who else in this book manages to get five separate sect leaders utterly obsessed with him no matter how you choose#to interpret that obsession?#no one!!! that's who!!#ain't no one else in the jianghu doing it like lianfang-zun and that's just a goddamn fact

I think Arknights' Sami may be, outright, one of the coolest ideas I've ever seen in a piece of fiction. Most things would have said "The Collapsals are why Sami is like this!" But no, Arknights knows better. Sami is already a place where snow falls upwards, where you can see the ghosts of people who are not dead, where 4 story tall shadows pass by and block out the stars at night. Sami is strange, illogical, and hostile, but it is not Wrong. It's just a place where the natural order is different from anything else in the world, but you can come to comprehend it, come to an accord with Sami and the way it exists. But the Collapsals are Wrong. Their blood is poison, their bodies are corpses, their knowledge is a curse. You can't comprehend it. You can't come to an accord with it. You can only die. It is one form of strangeness, the comforting unsettling feeling of a different natural order, being intruded by one that is just outright Wrong, uncanny, broken, and evil.
#not ignoring the impact of colonialism directly framed as just as much of an invasion as the collapsals#obviously i don't think sami is perfect but it also compels me deeply on a level nothing else does#and i'm sure actual indigenous people have more nuanced thoughts about it than i do of course#arknights
