Bear: 9/10
Hedgy: 7/10
We were initially going to watch a drama, but ended up with this one. I'm so glad The Universe plopped this on our (mine?) laps while we were browsing the Sapphic Films available on SBS On Demand.
When John Carroll Lynch popped up on screen we both recognised him and Bear went...
"isn't he American!?"
I wanted to mention a film John was in but there was nothing that popped up at that moment. If I had a chance to look through his filmography...I would have said...
"He's the captain in 'Hot Pursuit'!!!!"
...but I would have likely said...
"He was really good in 'Love Happens'."
I don't know why I was expecting Bear to agree with me when I mentioned that I thought the second half of film was better. Her view was that there was more happening at that point. Maybe I was asking too much of the film (my perfectionistic tendencies?) and had a belief that it was possible to put together a version which had the first half also equally as compelling.
One of the recurring gags for me that was done well was the band popping up randomly.
One of the interesting things were that SAGAFTA was mentioned in the credits...
I think during the first few minutes the film it wasn't that clear to me that Shira was managing a bar. I'll have to ask Bear if she was also wondering what the place was.
Were there other unions mentioned that were based in Israel and Germany? Or everyone in the film were members of SAG?

The only movie I can think of off the top of my head that does show ‘real’ poverty like that (even if somewhat briefly) is Running on Sand.
The protagonist is shown to be living in a small apartment with multiple other refugees.
Ages ago I was listening to a podcast about class divide and depictions of poverty in media and at one point one of the hosts said
“We often talk about the rich not understanding what it’s like to be poor and while that’s true it’s also true for most of us. We might think we understand it because we think we’ve seen it on tv but in reality we all tend to think of “poor” as the poorest we’ve been ourselves. Unless we’ve actually been poor or been close to someone who is or was poor we don’t really understand what that means. What most of us think of as poor is lower-middle class”
Basically his point was that being poor means something different in different countries but a lower-middle class person in the west doesn’t truly understand what a person sharing an apartment with 10 other people just to get by has to go through and that person doesn’t understand what a person who had to live in a storm drain for a while had to struggle with unless they were that person. That’s why “poor people” in movies and shows are never all that poor. Both because the writer never experienced the sort of poverty they’re trying to portray but also because most viewers wouldn’t understand it and constantly question why the character was living like that. Some think poor means not having a car because they had to live without one for a while, while others think poor means not being able to pay for a streaming service. Our idea of poverty is shaped by our own experiences. Thoughts?

queer palestinian short film: "polygraph"
queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i’m featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
Tumblr media
israel | 21 minutes | 2020 | narrative short film audio in hebrew & arabic; subtitles available in english & german
polygraph | بوليجراف, written and directed by samira saraya, never lets you forget about the inherently unequal power dynamic between yasmine (played by saraya herself), a palestinian arab nurse living in tel aviv, and her israeli lover or (hadas yaron), who is an intelligence officer in the israeli army – nor about the way that yasmine’s life is surrounded by israeli occupation and suppression, even just when driving her girlfriend to work. when yasmine’s sister jehan (fidaa zidan) comes to visit from the occupied west bank, the dinner yasmine hosts to introduce them becomes a site of tension around or’s participation in upholding israeli apartheid. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end
watch as part of the collection upon her lips: butterflies at vimeo on demand or several other platforms, or with a subscription on the criterion channel

I think about the 90s
When the future was a testament
To something beautiful and shiny, now
We're only counting down the time that's left

She became the mother now trying to comfort them like a mother.
The lost their parents and a sister.
Ruining other people’s lives is what the Israeli government is doing to innocent Palestinians right now.
