queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i’m featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
Tumblr media
israel | 21 minutes | 2020 | narrative short film audio in hebrew & arabic; subtitles available in english & german
polygraph | بوليجراف, written and directed by samira saraya, never lets you forget about the inherently unequal power dynamic between yasmine (played by saraya herself), a palestinian arab nurse living in tel aviv, and her israeli lover or (hadas yaron), who is an intelligence officer in the israeli army – nor about the way that yasmine’s life is surrounded by israeli occupation and suppression, even just when driving her girlfriend to work. when yasmine’s sister jehan (fidaa zidan) comes to visit from the occupied west bank, the dinner yasmine hosts to introduce them becomes a site of tension around or’s participation in upholding israeli apartheid. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end
watch as part of the collection upon her lips: butterflies at vimeo on demand or several other platforms, or with a subscription on the criterion channel

We Were the Lucky Ones (2024)
A Jewish family separated at the start of World War II is determined to survive and reunite.
A brilliant, thought-provoking, and extremely moving true story of a Jewish family during WWII. A quality production that is very impactful.

I highly recommend “Felix and Meira,” a French-Canadian film about a married Hasidic Jewish woman’s relationship with a single, secular man. It’s beautifully filmed, the music is exquisite and the main character is played by the same actress who plays Libbi Shtisel in Shtisel. It’s on Amazon Prime.

Mary Magdalene (2019)
She is one of the most transformative yet misunderstood women in history, alternately vilified as a sinner and canonized as a saint. For the first time, the incredible story of Mary Magdalene is told through her own eyes. In the first century A.D., the free-spirited Mary (Rooney Mara) flees the marriage her family has arranged for her, finding refuge and a sense of purpose in a radical new movement led by the charismatic, rabble-rousing preacher Jesus (Joaquin Phoenix). The sole woman among his band of disciples, Mary defies the prejudices of a patriarchal society as she undergoes a profound spiritual awakening and finds herself at the center of an earth-shaking historical moment. Boldly challenging received wisdom, Mary Magdalene is a rapturous, moving account of a miraculous woman who risked everything to follow her faith.
Directed by:   Garth Davis
Starring:   Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tahar Rahim, Ariane Labed, Denis Menochet, Lubna Azabal, Tchecky Kary, Hadas Yaron, Ryan Corr, Irit Sheleg
Release date:   April 12, 2019
