Crystal raises an eyebrow at him. He smiles sunnily.

"Edwin would sell me to Satan for one corn chip," she says.

Edwin, from his spot at the desk, lowers his book enough to give her a longsuffering look. "This feels like one of your obscure internet references," he says. He still says "internet" like the word doesn't belong in his mouth.

Crystal gives him a bland smile. "The internet isn't obscure," she says. "You just don't know anything about it because you're a million years old."

"One hundred twenty four," he says, because he's a pedantic little shit.

Charles is chuckling in the corner, because he has low tastes and thinks Edwin being a pedantic little shit is hilarious.

"At any rate," says Edwin crisply, "As a fugitive from hell, negotiating with Satan would hardly be in my best interests. Also, as a fugitive from hell, I have no interest in seeing anyone sent there unjustly, much less someone I have grown... attached to."

She feels her smile warm a little at that, and turns her head so that Edwin won't see. Love you too, Edwin.

"Finally," he concludes, "I am dead, with no need to eat, and therefor have no use for corn chips. This accusation does not make sense."

Crystal chokes at the affronted dignity in his voice, but pulls her expression back under control, only turning back to Edwin when she's sure she can look disdainful without her lips twitching. Charles dying of laughter in the corner isn't helping, but she manages.

"It's a meme," she says loftily.

Edwin's longsuffering expression turns pained. "Half the time, I am sure you are making these things up to aggravate me," he informs her.

She isn't, but only because the reality aggravates him plenty without any embellishment.

"Is it working?" she asks, and finally lets herself laugh when he picks up his book again and glares daggers at her over the top of it.

Ermm...What the flip is a "Will Wood?"

Awhile ago I made a Will Wood LEGO set in the program Studio 2.0 based off his album "In Case I make it," and just never posted it anywhere. Contains a bunch of references to his songs, his albums, those tapeworms that he has, stuff he has worked on with other people, etc. Some of the character's are based off preexisting stuff while others is more original I guess. Still not the best with captions cuz I got nothing else lmao

I feel like i complained a lot in the caption of this post but I actually do love how this came out and I really enjoyed doing all the fancy posing for all the figures and I really want to do more stuff like that

For a lot of the character's I had trouble finding good parts that actually matched with the design so some of them are just real wonky looking. Part of me sorta wishes I made an original design for SELF-ISH but at the same time I think just having the actual art from the cover being placed on top of a LEGO dude is really funny.

I know this has already been said and I’m super late, but Mia as the protag of RE8 would have been so good. The contrast between Mia, the Lords, and Mother Miranda would have been absolutely interesting. I'm shoving everything under a read more because damn I have so many thoughts about Mia.

Lady Dimitrescu is a woman that cannibalizes and drinks the blood of her servants and intruders. On top of that, she tortures before preying on them. She does this willingly and very much derives pleasure from doing so. Lady D’s gothic triplets hunt any poor fool that wanders in. It’s a fun family activity for them just as much as it’s for sustenance. 

Do you know what this parallels? The Baker family under Eveline’s control. They patrol the estate and anyone who rejects the “gift” either ends up molded or on the dinner table. This family also partakes in a fucked up version of a family dinner, eating the victims that refused their little girl’s “gift.” 

However, a major difference between the Baker and Dimitrescu family is their willingness to participate in these activities. A family of cannibals; one forced while the other relishes in it. 

Mia is still very traumatized by her three years in the Baker’s estate. Breaking into the castle to find her daughter would force her back. Hello to all the emotions that come with those memories, the ones Mia has been trying to forget. The harder you try to forget something, the more you think about it. What better way to make Mia acknowledge Dulvey, Louisiana than by forcing her into something so similar? 

And while she’s still reeling from remembering her time in captivity, why not push her a bit further down memory lane with House Beneviento? Mia has demonstrated at multiple points in RE7 that she does care about other lives. She lies to Ethan to keep him from getting caught up in her work. She tries to save Alan and crew members of "The Annabelle" (the crew members are a bit more indirect, she mainly focused on Alan) by containing Eveline. After Jack finds her, Mia keeps her distance to keep from infecting them while trying to write a warning. She tries her hardest during RE7 to save Ethan. 

Mia’s hallucinations could center on her guilt. The failure to stop Eveline and the lives ruined as a result. How she was always too late to help anyone. Ethan curing her, a criminal, over Zoe, the person helping him. Leaving Zoe behind in the shattered remains of her home and family. Surviving. Visions of Ethan hinting at his “condition” could lure her to the manor. A little nudge to the whole “he was mold the entire time” plot twist without fully giving it away. 

Moreau, lacking in self worth and very attached to a woman who doesn’t give him the time a day, yet still he considers her as his mother. Most of his actions are for the attention and validation from his “mother.” No matter what Moreau does, he’ll never have her affection or time. It’s sad, isn’t it? To witness a man try so hard only to be rejected. And isn’t that familiar? Mia once felt compassion for someone with similar traits. 

Remember the little girl who considered you her mother? The one that spent three years waiting for you to love her after you promised? The one you had a hand in killing? What makes you think you could ever be a good mother after what you did? Why are you trying so hard to save Rose when you didn’t even extend the same courtesy to Eveline?

Y’all know how Mia’s past is a mystery? Like why she was working for the Connections and how she was even recruited and all that. Heisenberg would be a great way to explore it. A man taken, forced into becoming something else, and stuck in a family he doesn’t want. Mia can relate. He wants to use her daughter as a weapon. She was willing to let another child be used as a weapon. They’re alike, so surely Mia would be willing to side with him.

But Heisenberg is cocky and Mia isn’t the person she was prior/during 7. Even if she was on board with using Eveline as a weapon to end all wars or whatever bullshit the Connections told her, she’s not willing now. Not after what she’s seen and been through. This section could be Heisenberg goading her through the tvs/intercoms about her past to change her mind with Mia remaining steadfast in her refusal.

And then there’s Mother Miranda. Two mothers trying to get their daughters back through vastly different means. Because of the group photo showing Mia and Miranda with Eveline this encounter can go one of two ways. 

Miranda and Mia know each other and have worked together before. Whether it be on the E-Series Project (with Mia becoming the caretaker and spending copious amounts of time at the lab) or though some other means at work. 

They’ve only briefly met when the Connections were in a hurry to transport Eveline.

Either way, Miranda would compare them. As a mother, Mia must understand what she’s trying to accomplish. Would Mia not do the same as she? Maybe at this point Miranda shows she killed Ethan to demoralize to prevent her from interfering with the ceremony. Tells her she’s too late once again and to give Rose to her because she’ll be the superior mother.

Idk, I guess you could switch to Ethan instead of Chris so he can still have Eveline tell him he’s moldy. But he’s a stubborn man and he forces himself back to weaken Miranda so Mia can kill her. Chris shows up and Ethan does the same thing he did at the end by blowing himself up with Chris forcing Mia (with Rose) on the helicopter. That way the Shadow of Rose DLC can still be about Rose and Ethan. 

TLDR; Mia should have been the protagonist because it would have allowed us to explore her character and background more. It was a missed opportunity especially since so much of RE8 centers around mothers. It would have played out better as closing off the Winters Family saga as well since we could have tied the loose ends that came with Mia’s mysterious past.

Y'know what, I think maybe I don't need any more Murderbot books. I think maybe ending things here is fucking perfect and as much as I love Wells's writing I'm genuinely not sure it can get better for me.

Like, so much of the books are about MB learning how to be a person, about becoming okay with being a complete individual with everything it entails. The first thing it does once it's actually allowed to decide on its own is it runs away from it all (admittedly to go on a mission to confirm some things about its past, because it genuinely just wants to be *good*). It shoves all its emotions away as much as it's able to. Then shit happens, and it makes its first friends, makes decisions based on these friendships, goes through a lot of emotionally intense situations...

And we get to this point here. MB having zero doubts about going with ART says a lot about its relationship with ART, but it also says a lot about its relationship with its humans - it knows that wherever it goes, when it comes back, the humans will still be there. Its humans actively acknowledge its struggles with being a now-free SecUnit and MB is willing to entertain the discussions to an extent and share information about its deeply personal experiences. Hell, System Collapse ends with MB admitting it might be somewhat broken, but that's okay as long as it can keep doing its job, and agreeing to basically do counselling - this is the guy what would rewatch its favourite TV show again and again in order to avoid acknowledging it even had Emotions a couple books back.

Reading this, I know that MB will be okay. It has hopes and goals and genuinely believes in itself and it has an amazing support system that its willing to lean on for the first time in its life. I'm convinced it'll go on to do great things with ART. And that's really the only thing I need to know.

after a little more thought, i think the fundamental hela components are:

the bone-deep loneliness of an only child warrior-princess-heir in a kingdom where princess aren't really meant to inherit. general alienation, no peers, a cold and distant father, and a mother she cannot connect to.

encountering far too much death far too young, leading to deep existential dread, and morbid curiosity, and unethical necromantic experiments, and...

a desperate, obsessive need to prove herself, to make her mark, to be noticed and remembered, so her name at least will live forever

and a little more detail on the above:

gender feelings: there's a lot going on here. what hela, personally, is expected to be is almost the opposite of what a typical asgardian woman is expected to be. how can she reconcile it? she needs to play a "masculine" role to gain respect and hold onto power, but she will likely also be ridiculed for being too masculine. the valkyries provide a template for warrior women, and yet hela doesn't seem to be one of them - and if mcu valkyries are anything like the toa version, they have to swear off marriage... while for hela, marriage is a fraught prospect and yet an inescapable duty, because with no younger siblings she is the end of the allfather's bloodline. meanwhile frigga is pretty much the Ideal Woman, who probably married young and on her father's orders, and yet is unlikely to admit any discomfort in her role or allow hela much leeway with hers. and hela probably scorns and rebels against her to hide that she's terrified of losing her power/autonomy and becoming her.

religious fanaticism: asgard claims that its imperialism is justified because the fall of the asgardian empire would bring about ragnarok. according to TR, the conflict that ended hela and odin's relationship was about imperial expansion: odin wanted nine realms. hela wanted everything. this could just be hela being equally sincere in her beliefs, but more literal - if asgard has to rule the universe, then, well, as much as odin likes the conflate them, the nine realms are not the whole universe... so perhaps from hela's perspective, odin was becoming weak, losing his nerve, neglecting his duty and endangering all existence...

(also - i do think asgardian prophecies are likely to be vague but in some way Scientifically Proven, so they're not taken as beliefs, even mandatory ones, but as straightforward facts. ragnarok is ENTIRELY REAL to them. and it was real, in the end - not just the fall of asgard in TR, but the Snap that shortly followed it. ofc that doesn't justify anything, esp their absolutely non-objective interpretation ("x will happen, then y" -> "so if we prevent x, y won't happen? right? right??? let's do 10,000 war crimes just to make sure <3") but it does cast a sliiightly different light on it. and it's interesting.)

(hela being a religious fanatic also cast an interesting light on her doing potentially sacrilegious things to corpses... she could be such an almost-heretical god-complex well-technically-the-scriptures-say freak <3 "why don't you want your corpse to fight in my undead army? i'm giving you new life to fight in a holy war! you should be honoured. it's just like my own personal valhalla")

maybe not quite autism actually: this one is really just flavour so far. i think hela thinks and feels in absolutes (or tries to, or wants to.) i think she despises hypocrisy and strives for a sort of purity/distillation of the self. i think she grew up showing her power by being bold and forceful and cutting and direct, and looks down on the more covert power of manipulation. i think she is the one truly, brutally honest person in her family of liars. i think she thinks being Prepared To Do The Difficult Thing and To Face The Ugly Truth is a vital part of who she is, a duty and a moral lynchpin. i think she is in desperate need of certainty in an uncertain universe, and will try to discard or destroy anything that doesn't fit the shape she's trying to mould herself into. i think, deep down, she is a conflicted, vulnerable hypocrite too - and just as odin is repeatedly horrified to recognise himself in his war criminal children, i think hela would horrified if she ever managed to recognise herself in her deceitful, selfish, cowardly, hand-wringing father...

Did Matt get a source of science facts recently? Did he start listening to a podcast or reading a new book? (He is also one degree of separation from Hank Green...?)

I've been noticing him incorporating or dropping little nuggets of knowledge that he hasn't really used in the past. I love caecilians and was THRILLED to see one Alaskan Bull Worm sized as a DnD monster! I've never seen them in media before and especially not in their full resplendent gross-ness.

Then the little nuggets this episode- someone asking "aren't hippos more deadly than lions?" And Matt going "They ARE!" With the delight of someone who made a purposeful choice based on research. And the mention of brightly colored animals tending to be warning of toxins but not necessarily the same of plants.

Anyway I'm really excited to see what he does with it- classic fantasy staples are made so much better and scarier when you include tidbits of real animals' biology and behavior!
