New headcanon, that Charles over the years periodically has given Edwin buttons that reminded him of his best mate. Edwin doesn't wear any of them the same way Charles does but he's kept every single one and he values each of them.

Charles paused to light a cigarette at the base of a hill, and Edwin took the opportunity to rub a hand against one temple in some forgone attempt to push back the mounting spike of pain. 

They walked slowly, while Charles smoked. 

The whole thing made Edwin feel dangerously close to…well, it didn’t much matter what it made Edwin feel, in the end. All he could do was his level best to be what Charles needed.

you don’t understand how much I adore boys being cocky about their jobbed jobs (especially if we remember that almost every shown case they closed was tilting on the edge of complete failure)

yeah Edwin is quick to praise and Charles is always very enthusiastic and they deserve to say nice things to each other and about themselves in general but it looks like they have an established routine of being smug and cocky after cases with all these “great job” “day is officially saved” “we are the Chip and Dale of the supernatural world” (they definitely are) and it’s so so boyish and funny and precious!

I mean that’s how we know that they enjoy themselves and their job and it brings them joy even in 30 years (in contrast with vast majority of “grown” detectives we all are accustomed to see in media who are usually depressed or nonchalant)

(but also the boys are being conceited assholes and I love it about them)

p.s. all that also indicates that when they get together they will be this insufferable couple people don’t want to be around

Edwin might have Scary Dog Privileges but i think Charles would genuinely be crushed if he found out he was the scary dog -> it's also kinda funny that this dynamic switches once you get to know the two

[the four of them are chilling in the office, because Niko is alive and im not open to criticisms actually, thank you] [Charles had just shooed off a particularly nasty client- a nasty nasty client that resulted in the agency closing early. Or least going on break] [Edwin is on the couch, reading, while the other three are sitting on the floor playing cards] Crystal, tossing a blue 3 into a steadily growing pile: You know, it's so nice not having to deal with people like that anymore Charles, taking his turn: People like what? Crystal: You know- assholes like that guy. Who think they can be rude to service workers just because they're 'paying' [Niko nods emphatically as she debates on the best card, while Edwin doesn't even look away from his book] Edwin, briefly reaching down to squeeze his partner's shoulder: I can tell you Charles has never once let that kind of abhorrent behavior slide, especially not in this office. You needn't worry Niko, finally laying down a yellow three: That true, it's like having our own scary dog.. but instead of robbers, he scares off rude people. And spirits [Crystal snickers, her fingers primed to set down a yellow skip] Crystal: And Night Nurses. Charles, with the face of a people pleaser obviously about to crack: ...you guys think I'm scary? [Everybody freezes- Edwin on the couch, Crystal with her skip, and Niko with remaining two cards] [Edwin finally looks up from his book to glare incredulously at Crystal from over Charles' head. Crystal quickly chooses a new card] Crystal, shaking her head: ...no- No no, no no no.. it's a- it's a joke! [The game is quickly abandoned in favor of Niko and Crystal scooting closer on opposite sides of Charles- the latter holding her phone out with one of those 'reasons i feel safe walking alone' videos open and playing] [Edwin leans over Charles' head to watch too, his hand laying almost protectively on the other boy's shoulder]
