Cleaning and using wild rose hips for water infusion.
youtube
Made a little video clip explaining what I do with rose hips. There is a little follow-up clip about the irritating fibers inside them. I also keep the cooked bits of fruit left from infusion and mash it with honey or something for jam.

I’ve started reading a book that my step grandpa gave me years ago. It’s a book about herbs written in the 70s by Sybil Leek, a witch. He said he met Sybil once and that she’s “one of the few good witches out there,” which is a little bizarre to hear from a god-fearing conservative man…. He also insinuated that I’d like it purely for that reason, but I’d never dared to tell him about my interests in that area (because he was a god-fearing conservative).
I read a chapter every night before I go to sleep and now I have silly dreams about herbs every night :’) I dreamt last night that my herbalist friend had flowers growing out of her head and that water lilies could talk. Super normal
#there are some funny lines in this book that are only funny living in 2024#like her wistfully wondering when herbs from The People’s Republic of China would be imported to the US#and also listing off sedative herbs that are poisonous and addictive like ‘poppies and cannabis indica’#you are not immune to propaganda etc etc#it’s refreshing to read an herbal/witchcraft book that isn’t entirely trying to tell me to stop going to a doctor and use essential oils#she straight up said to maybe not self-medicate with foxglove. so that’s nice#considering the sheer stupidity that’s pervading new age and witch communities I’m honestly a little relieved lmao

weird question but any remedy for a growing wisdom tooth that has given heightened body temperature, runny nose, pain in the eyes, brain fog? For a few days now
oh I'm seeing this a day late, sorry! I don't know any specific herb for the situation you're describing, but this sounds pretty serious, I believe medical help would be warranted in a tooth that is causing this many symptoms! It sounds like it's making half of your head inflamed and that's not normal.
#sorry i don't have a better advice!#there are herbs and stuff that reduce fevers and swelling#like elderberry syrup might help with the immunity and fever#and violet tea is good for fever#but this shouldn't happen due to a growing tooth#i had my wisdom teeth grow and never experienced any of this

Day 19
Niki wrapped the bandages around Rinne’s arm, just tight enough to be slightly uncomfortable, but not too tight to restrict blood flow. They were well familiar with this song and dance, the pot of herb infused blood cooling on the counter as Niki scolded Rinne for not taking enough care of himself.
“Rinne-kun, you have to--”
“I know, Niki.” The silence was deafening. Sometimes, Niki wished Rinne had never told him about the world of magic, about being a scribe, but if he had hidden it, his life would be boring and he’d never have gotten to know Rinne as deeply as he did. The two of them had traveled the world together, allowing Niki to try out cuisine from countries he hadn’t ever dreamed of visiting before, so it wasn’t all bad, all things considered.
But still, Rinne had insisted on continuing to write spells, spells that helped Niki improve his cooking, helped his condition, spells that could do wonderful things and help people in bad situations. They were frequent visitors at youth shelters wherever they lived with a spell to multiply their food to feed everyone working under the table. They could use the spells over and over as long as Rinne was alive, but Rinne insisted on having extra ink for emergencies.
Niki’s hands brushed over the bandage, wanting to scold Rinne for his stupidity, draining more blood than usual for this batch. He’d be bedridden for at least a week.
“What are you writing?” Niki asked, trying to change the subject.
“A protection spell.” Rinne’s eyes shifted to the ground, avoiding Niki’s glare.
“Rinne-kun, you know those don’t work on you and I’ve already told you I’m not leaving you.”
“‘S not for you.”
“Then who’s it for?”
“Kohaku-chan, back home. He’s been getting into dangerous situations again and the last book wore out.” Kohaku must be using the spells more frequently than they realized if they were already falling apart.
“Fine, but promise me you’ll wait to write it until you’re feeling better.” Niki was already planning out their meals for the next week to raise Rinne’s iron levels and help him recover. Rinne leaned forward, arms wrapping around Niki’s torso and pulling him in. Rinne buried his face in Niki’s shoulder.
“I promise.”
“Now let’s get you to bed. You’ve got a long week ahead of you.”
#shay writes#rinniki#january writing challenge#was reading ink blood sister scribe and had some ideas#consider this an au ig but i dont plan on expanding on this one at all#just a little thought experiment and i have been enjoying the book a lot#i'm like... halfway through it? about to start part 2 of it soonish but augh the potential for it...#rinne is a scribe which means he's immune to magic but only his blood can make the ink to write spells#anyone else can read them though so niki is normally the one doing that but obviously#he sends some back to kohaku and meru and he tried sending on to hiiro but doubts it ever got back to him#spells need to be written for like. specific scenarios so you'll end up rewriting things sometimes and i dont think#rinne would have access to the library so yknow he has to write all his own stuff#which means. drawing a lot of blood#and knowing a lot about herbs but that he already knew#i could expand on this a little but maybe after i finish the book u know#anyway enjoy...

Fantasy worldbuilding: the other races consider humans deceitful and scheming to the core, and there is one example of human behavior that they name each time they warn their young: Humans poison trap their own food storages. Anyone who has been to human residences has seen it, somehow they all do it - to deter thieves, naturally, though some think it is also to avoid suspicion when poisoning a guest or visitor.
Only members of one's own household would know which meats have been rubbed with poisonous plants, and which bulbs grown in the garden will kill you. And they're all stored right next to the proper edible food! And the humans never mistakenly poison themselves this way, they are far too cunning to fall into their own traps.
If you ask a human about this, they will be baffled and insist they've never heard of this custom in their lives. While they may suppose that some other human cultures might do something so wicked, each one reassures asking visitors that their people do not do anything like that. And the truth is, they really don't. Not on purpose, at least.
It's just that humans are the only ones immune to garlic, mint, and many other plants and herbs that are poison to all the other races.
