—everything is orange. [ i ]
pairing: lando norris x kpop idol! reader
summary: a racecar driver who needed a fake girlfriend to dispel rumors and a kpop idol who needed publicity for her song. somewhere in between orange cars and orange sunsets, stands something they're afraid of naming.
author's note: i wont take tags for this im sorry 😭 also, i changed the faceclaim
masterlist.
The room is dimly lit. You didn't like dim lighting. It reminds you of your childhood bedroom. A barely functioning lightbulb hanging on the ceiling, your mother never bothering to change it. You were too short to change it yourself. You asked your neighbor once to do it for you but he had asked for a night with you in exchange so you kicked him out of the house before he could change the light bulb. You chose to study under the sucky light which became the reason behind your poor eyesight today.
You sit on a chair across Atty. Kim Jin Hwang, HAN entertainment's legal representative and one of the best lawyers Seoul has to offer, with a table dividing the two of you. He’s a man in his fifties, quite close to the age of retirement. He’s a veteran and despite his age, his mind is still sharp.
You refrain yourself from tapping your foot against the floor anxiously. Anxiety does not look good on you and you refuse to show people that you're anxious. Anxiety is weakness so you keep your posture straight and make sure to keep eye contact with Atty. Kim. If you look away first, you're a coward.
“Tell me honestly. Is this you in the pictures?” Atty. Kim Jin Hwang points at the pictures sprawled across the table. They’re blurry and grainy and incredibly zoomed in. You can't even tell it was you from some angles. You look quite different from the person that you were when you were sixteen. HAN Entertainment is particularly fond of investing in their idol’s plastic surgeries and while they only fixed your crooked teeth, removed the hump on your nose bridge, altered your uneven ears, bleached your skin, and plucked your brows—which are quite minor changes—you still hold very little resemblance to the teenage you.
You grew up well. Thankfully, you inherited only the best parts of your parents. Or at least, the best parts of your Mom. You have no idea what your father looked like, only knowing that he was from Brazil or some country in South America.
“Yes,” you answer immediately, not bothering to lie. What is the point of lying anyway? People have been calling you all sorts of malicious names across different social media platforms and you’re sure Atty. Kim has seen some of them. There’s no point lying to his face and saving your image anymore. Might as well admit that you are exactly the kind of person they’ve been yapping about. An illegal driver. A criminal.
“Why did you do it?” Atty. Kim asks and truthfully, you did not expect the question. You expected the what and how and where and when but never the why question. You fall into a thoughtful pause.
“I was sixteen,” you shrug your shoulders, almost uncaringly so. “I wanted to leave home as early as I could and to do that, I needed money. Nobody wanted to accept student part-timers and I tried doing stuff like tutoring and doing other people’s assignments but it wasn't enough. I have a friend who joins street races. He’s not a good driver but he’s got a good car. He really wants to win so he cheated and let me drive his car on the condition that if I win, he’ll split me the winner’s money. I did it. I won races in that car, acting as if he was the one driving it.”
Atty. Kim gives you a long look. You don’t know what it means.
“Alright,” Atty. Kimlifts his chin and rises from his chair. “That concludes our meeting. In the meantime, you lay low. We’ll handle everything.”
You nod, “Okay.”
True to Atty. Kim’s words, HAN entertainment handled everything. They released a statement that you watched one race because you were sixteen and clueless and didn't know you were getting yourself involved in an illegal activity. It helped that you drove under a different name so people were easily convinced of this lie. You knew your friend—the owner of the car— wouldn't even reveal that it was you who’d driven the car. His ego would be bruised once the people discovered that he cheated on the street races and a sixteen-year-old girl with no license and no personal car outperformed him.
Additionally, HAN announced that you were to depart your group—ORACLE—which absolutely destroyed you because ORACLE had been the place where you felt like you belonged. ORACLE had been your goal. You worked yourself to the bone to the point of collapse because you wanted to be in ORACLE and wanted to remain in ORACLE.
Nevertheless, you accepted your fate easily. There was no point destroying the other members because of your fault alone.
Your members cried for a whole week after the announcement was made public through HAN Entertainment’s official social media platforms and you spent every single day you could still spend inside the dorm reassuring them, telling them that you’d still be there for them, that you’d be standing behind them in each step to their success. You loved your girls so much. You wouldn't even choose to leave them. If only fate was a bit kinder to you. If only life was less brutal.
Furthermore, HAN made you publish a handwritten apology letter. You couldn't remember what you wrote anymore but you did remember how heavy the pen felt, how your hands trembled as you wrote each sentence, how writing the damn letter took three hours because you kept breaking down midway. They announced your hiatus promptly after. They used the term indefinite hiatus but it might as well be retirement.
You can't believe that you suffered through sixteen years under the same roof as your incredibly abusive mother, left home with only a backpack and a paper bag of cash just as you hit eighteen years old, worked your way in the harsh world by juggling three part-time jobs and a scholarship-shouldered university education until a scout noticed you, undergone the rigorous and borderline suicidal training of a KPop idol to-be, and sacrificed everything you had—mental stability, blood, sweat, and tears—just so you could pass every monthly evaluation and become your company’s darling, only to have everything disappear because someone found pictures of you predebut in an illegal street racing event. Fuck.
You were fucking sixteen at that time! You didn't know any better. You only wanted money. You didn't have a license. Getting one is too expensive. You borrowed a car from a friend. It's an unregistered car. You drove the car. You won races. You stopped when you turned eighteen. That was it.
Knetz decided to crucify you for a sin born out of your desperation when you were sixteen. When a dog was hungry, it ate whatever was thrown its way, uncaring if the food thrown at it was good or not because its primary instinct was only to cure its hunger. It was not as if you sexually assaulted someone. It was not as if you bullied someone and involved yourself in school violence. It was not as if you drank alcohol and drove or even involved yourself in gambling. Sure, street racing was illegal but you never even hurt someone! You never even crashed into someone mid-race.
You’re sure you’re going to leave the company and you won't fight their decision if they want you to do so. People spit out their gum when they lose their flavor. That's also what the industry did. You saw it happen too many times to too many idols. They collect pretty faces, push them to their limits until they could be loved by the public and once the public decides they’re not worth loving anymore, they’d spit them out. You are a gum in this story.
You feel like you’re eighteen again. You want to run away from home all over again. You ran away from the house you were born in once and now, you’re going to run away from the house you worked hard to live in. You want to pack your bags and board the next plane to another country even before the light of the rising sun touches the ground. That gnawing feeling of not belonging to a place that’s supposed to be home kept tormenting the cracks of your heart and the only way to seemingly get rid of it albeit only temporarily is to pick up on your feet and run away, never to leave anything behind you. Not ghosts, not traces, not memories—nothing.
But HAN entertainment won't let you. Yoon PD-nim knocked on your door, a contract in hand. He offered you an apartment to live in, a salary, a place in the company, and told you to keep creating songs. HAN Entertainment knew your talent in song making and producing was partly behind the success of ORACLE, their rising girl group. You were too useful to get rid of easily.
And like that, you spent the last two years making music for every kpop group under HAN Entertainment. You mostly made B-sides for the junior girl groups, AURORA and PRIZMA, and the title tracks for boy groups, HIRA and 1THEBOY. You worked for soloist, Ciel, once for his last comeback before his mandatory military service and worked on half a mini-album’s worth of songs for ORACLE every comeback. Thankfully, the songs gained positive feedback from the general public. That was your ticket to keep staying in HAN entertainment as a ghost producer and ghost song-writer.
Two years. You rotted in your apartment and the studio. This felt no different than the time you lived under your parents’ roof. You felt like a ghost, present but also not quite there. It's quite fitting, you think. You're a ghost producer and a ghost song-writer.
This was not a life worth living but you’d rather a life not worth living than have nothing at all.
You empty your fifth cup of coffee for the day—an unhealthy brew of Americano with five shots of espresso—before standing up from the ergonomic chair where you’ve glued your ass on in the last two to three business hours. The demo for Sunset Paradise is almost finished. There are still a few parts that need major adjustments and refinement but you’re confident that you’ll be done by midnight.
Manager-nim enters the studio just as you reach the door. You jump, almost kicking the indoor potted plant inconveniently positioned near the door. The caffeine made you extra jumpy today. Once you get over your tiny shock, you bow your head in greeting. Manager-nim mirrors your actions.
“You're still working?” he asks.
“You're still bald?”
Manager-nim rolls his eyes at you, smiling. You chuckle.
Manager-nim, or rather, Song Dan, is ORACLE’s manager. He is a middle-aged man who only came up to your shoulders. He’s shaped like a square with round glasses sitting on the bridge of his nose. He treated you and the other members of ORACLE as if you were his daughters.
“I’m going to go get coffee. You can sit here for a while,” you invite, gesturing to the tiny cream couch. You use your feet to nudge the potted plant and clear Manager-nim’s path.
“No coffee,” Manager-nim stops you, taking a seat. “That's enough coffee for you today. Sit down here. We need to talk.”
“You can't kick me out. I won't give you Ciel’s first post-military mini album and ORACLE’s summer title track if you do.”
Manager-nim’s eyebrows draw together, a vertical wrinkle appearing between them, “What? No. We're not kicking you out.”
Your shoulders sag, relieved.
“Yoon PD-nim wants you to release a single.”
At that, your entire body stiffens, eyes going wide as saucers. You let out a noise in disbelief.
“You're joking.”
Manager-nim’s face doesn't shift in the slightest.
“You're actually serious,” you rub your chin with your hand.
What is Yoon PD-nim trying to pull now? Two years have passed since you’ve disappeared from the limelight. You're certain that you're not returning to the world of flashing lights and stage performance anymore and you’ve already accepted that your career has ended.
“Why?” your voice slightly wavers as you ask. Manager-nim sighs heavily, patting the vacant space beside him.
“Take a seat. We’re going to be talking for a while.”
The girl in the mirror stares back at you. She looks exhausted. She has deep bags underneath her eyes. Her shoulders are bony. They look like they're about to pierce through her pale skin. Her lips, which should be a nice shade of pink, are pale. Her eyes hold emptiness.
You pull your gaze away from your reflection and direct it to the bathroom sink, where a hair brush sits on the white tiles quietly. Fallen hair gathers up in its numerous sharp teeth. At this rate, you’re going to end up like Manager-nim—bald.
You can't go bald. You have a weirdly shaped head.
“Yoon PD-nim wants you to release a single but before the release, he needs you to be in a PR relationship with someone.”
You hiss loudly, slapping a hand on your temple. God, you want to act like Manager-nim never said that. You don't want to remember it.
You? A PR relationship? With someone you don't know? How atrocious. You didn't even need to hear Manager-nim out until the end. You are out. You do not vibe with romantic relationships. They make your skin crawl.
“Listen, [Name]. This might be your only chance to come back again.”
“What if I don't want to come back again?”
“Then why are you still here? Why are you still making music? You're good at leaving so why didn't you?”
The public still terrifies you but you will never tell that to anyone. You can’t even go out and buy groceries without trembling. So many eyes. So many judging eyes. They're all waiting to destroy you again with their stupid eyes and stupid mouths with sharp teeth. A stupid PR relationship won't save you.
But what if it will?
You hold the edges of the sink and lean the majority of your weight against it. Your knuckles slowly turn white. Your knees feel weak. You close your eyes and let out a shaky sigh.
Why are you still here? A voice in your head asks.
I just want to be home. You reply.
Do it. This is your ticket to go home. It says.
You open your eyes and gaze into the mirror.
Do you want to be home?
More than anything.
With a nod, you push yourself away from the sink and exit the bathroom.
Yoon Sang Hyuk, CEO of HAN Entertainment—the black marble desk name plate indicates; the text an intimidating shade of gold. The owner of the name sits behind the table, his legs crossed over the other. His face is sealed with a neutral expression. Suddenly, a satisfied smile works its way across his face and you swear the wrinkles that permeated his entire face doubled in amount.
“I knew you still had it in you,” he says calmly. “That's good.”
“Thank you,” you say, your tone coming out bland.
“I’ll give you a manager and you are to leave for Singapore tomorrow.”
You nod, “Yes, Yoon PD-nim.”
“Oh and [Name]?”
“Yes, Yoon PD-nim?”
“I know you're smart and you're hardworking and you're strong,” he begins. “I am confident you’ll do well so when you fly out there, don't be intimidated by any of them. You're as powerful as them. Remember the reason why you're there in the first place and do what you think is best.”
“You're putting a lot of trust in me,” you observe.
It's questionable; the amount of trust he’s giving you. You already expected that Yoon PD-nim would send out an entire escort team just to make sure that you're not going to mess up again and get yourself involved in a PR nightmare incident. Who knows? Maybe someone will dig up pics of you copying homework from your seatmate in middle school and crucify you for being an academic cheater while you're out there holding hands with your fake boyfriend.
“I know you won't make the same mistake twice.”
You finally catch the underlying message behind his seemingly harmless words.
Focus on coming back and don't make another mistake.
You nod, “Yes, Yoon PD-nim.”
“Lando Kinder Norris,” you read the name on the folder, brows furrowing. That's a rather unique middle name. “British-Belgian. Born November 13, 1999—”
It's good that your fake boyfriend and you were born in the same year. You're not very fond of age gaps.
“—in Bristol, England. Currently racing for McLaren. Car number 4. First entry is the Australian Grand Prix.”
Below is a series of long paragraphs detailing his racing history that you’re definitely not reading. Shoving the folder aside, you lean back into the seat and cross your arms over your chest. Your eyes flutter close. Jinnie, a HAN entertainment manager who looks like she’s half white and half Asian, gives you a judging look from her seat.
“You should read it,” she advises.
“No,” you say.
“I spent hours compiling that information,” Jinnie frowns.
“You compiled the wrong info,” you tell her, not even bothering to glance towards her. “Nobody will believe we’re real if I only know the things written in Wikipedia. You should have asked his PR team how he likes his coffee, if he prefers brunch dates or dinner dates, if he likes staying in or going out, if he likes the sunny weather or the rain, if he’d rather get food delivery or cook, if he’d like to hold hands and walk side by side or walk ahead of you so he can act like your guard dog. Those things.”
To be loved is to be known.
“You speak as if you have romantic experience.”
“Do poets have to experience the things they write poetry about?” you retort. “Immanuel Kant believed that everything depended on how individuals interpret and respond to his environment based on their personal opinions and feelings. I don't need to experience it to know.”
Recurring observations are your common source of knowledge. Reading is another.
And besides, this isn't your first PR relationship. You like to think that you know exactly what you're doing.
“Tell me something that's not written in the folder, Jinnie-ssi,” you open your eyes and tilt your head so you can lock eyes with her. “For example, why does a distinguished racer need a fake relationship? I can’t be the only one benefiting from this agreement.”
Jinnie purses her lips, “I don't know much.”
“But you know something,” you rest your chin on the palm of your hand. “Tell me.”
“There have been rumors that Lando Norris got a girl pregnant. The woman marched into Woking and demanded to see him. Apparently, he got her pregnant when they slept together in a bar,” Jinnie shakes her head. “It's a messy ordeal but McLaren recently proved that Lando wasn't the father. Too bad though, the public isn't believing them.”
“And they think giving him a girlfriend would somehow make the public love him?”
“They need to show the world that their boy isn't an asshole,” Jinnie says. “That he’s a loving, loyal partner. That he isn't capable of committing fuckboy crimes because he has a girlfriend waiting for him at home.”
You snort. McLaren really decided that you’ll be the best girlfriend? How did they even know your existence? The KPop community and the F1 community are worlds far away from each other. It's easier for them to choose a supermodel, an American actress, or even a pop star. But no, they really decided that a washed-up KPop idol is a good girlfriend for their star boy. You can think of a few reasons why they chose you.
“Are you sure he really isn't the father?” you ask. Companies can ignore morality for the sake of protecting their golden images. HAN Entertainment is no different. For all you know, you’re going to be fake dating an asshole who made a woman pregnant and refused to take responsibility. He’d be no different from your father who left your pregnant mother.
“Beats me.”
An hour later, the plane lands in the most expensive city in the world, Singapore.
You have three choices: a VAQUERA blue devil sweatshirt, Motel Rock chute trousers, and a Adidas forum low shoes combo, or a varsity baseball jacket, Bonbom rhee cargo pants, and a Curetty C round toe mary janes combo. You went with the varsity jacket-cargo pants-mary janes combo. You put on a bonnet to finish the look. When Jinnie enters the hotel room and sees what you're wearing, she immediately says:
“No. You're definitely not wearing that.”
“What's wrong with this?” you ask, looking down at your fit. This is what you usually wear. They're comfortable and acubi fashion is a trend nowadays.
“You're a WAG now. Dress like it.”
Your eyebrow arches.
“WAG?”
“Wife and girlfriend,” Jinnie replies. Your confusion isn't absolved, not even the slightest. Your mouth pulls to the side.
“And how does this correlate to my fashion sense? Do race car drivers control their girlfriend’s fashion style?” you genuinely question.
“No,” Jinnie says. “But they’d prefer it if you dress in something befitting for a WAG, you know? Elegance? Classic timely looks?”
You put a finger up, “No.”
Jinnie huffs, “I’m not taking a no for an answer. Wear a satin dress. Wear cotton trousers and silk blouses. Look like you're from an old money family, not some hip hop dancer from the streets. You're no longer your own person, you are an extension of Lando Norris. You have to look a certain way, act a certain way, talk a certain way. Your goal is to make Lando Norris look good.”
You push your tongue to the inside of your cheek, annoyed. Your jaw is tense.
“And when Lando Norris looks good, you’ll look good. Good enough that the public will love you again to support your new song. Do you understand?”
She's right.
She's right.
You hate that she's right.
No matter how bitter the truth tastes, you are irrelevant and Lando Norris is your ticket to going back. In any other world, you will never ever allow yourself to become a jewelry for a man to wear. So you grit your teeth, keep the ugly prideful monster within you at bay, and clench your fists. You have nothing and when you have nothing, you need to be resourceful and make use of the people who have the things to push you to the top again.
You let out a sigh, “Jinnie, choose my outfit for me.”
Jinnie nods and leaves the room immediately.
It's three days before the Singapore FP1 2023. Jinnie drives you to meet Lando in his hotel. They organized a lunch gathering with you, Jinnie, Lando, and the other McLaren PR representatives who are responsible for this entire PR scam.
You're wearing a Versace tweed cardigan and a boucle tweed skirt paired with high heel leather boots and Greca goddess large shoulder bag. All black in color. Jinnie is the one who styled your hair. She insisted on it actually, claiming that your beach waves hair isn't doing it. She flat ironed the hell out of your hair so now, it's straight as a pole. She also sprayed your bangs with strong hold hairspray to keep them in place.
The outside world is nothing but a blur of high-rise buildings and cement pavements as the car runs. You're picking on your nails. They're clean but bare of manicures. Your two pinky nails are a bit too short. You tried to stop yourself from biting them in the airport but you can’t resist.
Two years is a long time. A bit too long in your opinion. You don't remember the things you learned in your etiquette classes anymore—how to stand in the public, how to walk, how to pose in front of the cameras, how to smile, how to greet people, how to look completely in your element despite being anxious of having a thousand eyes staring at you, how to act as if you're not crumbling at the pressure of looking good for everyone. That's the only way they’ll love you. If you look good in their eyes.
“We’re here.”
You blink.
“Come again?”
Jinnie points outside the car window. The car stopped and you didn't notice.
“Sorry,” you mutter, flipping your hair over your shoulder. You let out a breath, roll your shoulders back, and push the door open. Your entire face relaxes and you smile politely at the valet when Jinnie hands him the keys of the car. You ignore the starstruck expression on his face as you gesture to Jinnie to lead the way, following after her but not before saying your thanks to the valet. You're polite. You're trained to be.
You keep your shoulders square and your walk confident as you enter the hotel lobby. There aren’t a lot of people inside. There's a family of four in a corner, a group of elderly people sitting in the waiting area, and a group of posh friends chatting near the front desk. You can see a few heads turning in your peripheral vision. You can't blame them. You can be stunning if you try to be.
Your heart begins to ram violently against your rib cage. A million butterflies infest your intestines. Your ankles feel like it’ll snap in half a few minutes later. Your mind chants: DID THEY NOTICE HOW SCARED I AM? DID THEY NOTICE HOW TERRIFIED I AM? DID THEY NOTICE? DID THEY?
You want your ball cap and your sunglasses and your face mask. You want to hide your face.
You have to control your breathing as subtly as you can but you continue walking as if you're the prettiest yet the most down-to-earth creature to ever grace the planet. You fix your hair again once Jinnie and you stop in front of the elevator. Jinnie presses a button and you wait. While waiting, you twist the sole of your boot against the floor. It's better than tapping it against the floor. The elevator dings and the two of you enter the empty box.
When the doors close, your knees give out. You slam your hands against the stainless steel walls to stop yourself from dropping to your knees on the floor. Jinnie’s hands wrap around your waist, supporting as you pull yourself up. Her face contorts in worry.
“Are you alright?” she asks. You nod quickly.
“Yeah, yeah,” you lay your palm against your chest, right above your drumming heart. “Thanks.”
You straighten up, tugging the hem of your Versace tweed outfit to smoothen the creases and fixing your hair again. You clear your throat. The elevator dings and the doors open. You step out and your mask slides in place.
Jinnie leads you to a private dining hall. In the middle of a hall is a table occupied by five people wearing tacky orange-black polo shirts. You recognize one of them to be your fake boyfriend, Lando Norris.
Jinnie had already shown you what he looked like in her tablet and a few printed pictures but the pictures didn't do him justice. He looks extra charming personally.
He's still not your type.
The entire group rises to a stand just as you and Jinnie reach the table. You give a ninety degree bow, hands flat on the collar of your top so you won't accidentally give the McLaren people a view of your chest. (It's not like they have something to see anyway. Your chest is flatter than a rice field.) The edges of your lips curl upwards in a polite smile. You see Lando, your supposed fake boyfriend, try to imitate the bow, although he doesn't go as deep as you did. Your head tilts slightly at his action.
Jinnie is the first one who speaks, stretching a hand in front of her to shake hands with the McLaren team. She introduces herself in fluent English, “I’m Jinnie Jo of HAN Entertainment. It's a pleasure to meet you. This is [Name].”
They each introduce themselves one by one. Nicole, Greg, Kyla, and Louis. You try to memorize their faces and their names, drilling it into your brain so you won't forget. You're going to be working closely with them after all.
“Hi,” you greet them. You also shake hands with each of them. It feels weird, shaking hands as greetings. You are more accustomed to bowing.
“Wow, Jinnie, your accent is good,” Kyla compliments your manager.
“Thank you,” Jinnie smiles pleasantly. “I was born in Chicago. English is my first language.”
“How about her? Does she speak English?” Louis inquires. He's giving you a funny look. You ignore it.
“She does,” you smile at him pleasantly. “I’m very fluent. You don't have to worry.”
Risha, the Canadian member of ORACLE, was the one who helped you master English. You even have a Canadian accent when you speak English because of her. Additionally, you also took language classes when you were a trainee—Japanese, Chinese, English, and you even requested Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Korean sign language. You dabbled a bit on Tagalog, too, because you know how large the ORACLE fanbase is in the Philippines. You continued taking the classes up even after debut, even after all the members of the group had stopped, because you wanted to master the languages for the fans, to be able to hold conversations with them, to connect with them. You only stopped going to the classes after leaving the group two years ago. It's nice to see that your English skills are still in perfect shape.
“Please take a seat,” Nicole invites. You and Jinnie sit down. You place your bag on the empty chair beside you and when you pull your gaze up, you coincidentally meet Lando’s eyes. They're blue and green with flecks of hazel dusted in the middle. It's the first time you've seen someone with eyes wielding three different colors. They're stunning.
You smile at him. He smiles back and then averts his gaze. You turn to Nicole, who’s sitting beside you.
“Now,” she says, putting two folders on the table. She slides them towards you and Jinnie. Jinnie picks them up. You don't. Instead, you stare at them.
“What are these?” you question, slowly bringing your eyes up and meeting Nicole’s gaze.
“Contracts,” she answers.
“Contracts?” you echo, picking the folder up and opening it. You take your sweet time reading from top to bottom, tilting your head a bit to the side.
“You don't have to read it all. It's all just formalities. Just sign it,” Louis inputs. “Reading can be hard for you since it's not your first language—”
“I read just fine,” you interrupt, not glancing up as your eyes thoughtfully scan through the words printed on the paper. “Thank you for the concern but this is a contract that involves me and my future. I wish to know what I’m agreeing to.”
Louis wisely keeps his mouth shut. You put your hand on your mouth so you can discreetly smirk.
When you finish reading, you slowly set the folder back on the table. You press your tongue against the inside of your cheek as you tap your finger on the wooden surface of the table.
“This is unfairly written, don't you agree?” you ask. “You're putting rather lots of demands on me but so little on him.”
From beside you, Jinnie thins her lips. You know she's also thinking the same thing. Fucking HAN Entertainment. They didn't even make sure that the contents of the contracts are not disadvantageous towards you. You are disappointed but not surprised. They really just sent you to be devoured by wolves and demanded you to not make a mistake.
McLaren also thinks they can just choose a washed-up KPop idol to cosplay as their golden boy’s trophy girlfriend and make her do all their demands with little benefits and zero complaint. They deliberately chose someone who still holds popularity but little power. Someone who needs them as badly as they need her. They chose you.
Assholes. The two of them.
“What do you want him to do anyway?” Louis sneers. His face is beginning to look a little too annoying. “He's busy building his career. All you have to do is support him and make sure everyone knows it because you have none. That's all. Or is that a little hard for you?”
Louis is getting this all wrong. Jinnie told you that you're going to fix his reputation for him so his career wouldn't be ruined. In exchange, he gives you publicity so you could bring your career back from ruination. This is not a parasitic relationship where only their side gets the benefits. How could you even work on that comeback of yours if you're going to be glued by his side?
Your jaw ticks with restraint yet you choose to smile, “He’s not the only one building his career.”
You pick up the folder and toss it to Jinnie, who catches it skillfully.
“Throw that away. We're flying home. I don't need a PR relationship to promote my single that much.”
Satisfaction fills you when their faces grow alarmed.
Ha.
“Wait,” Kyla stands and she shoots a dirty glance towards Louis. Your eyebrows scrunch a little. “The contracts are open to revisions.”
You clap your hands together, smiling widely.
“Perfect. Jinnie, hand me a pen.”
The team leaves you and Lando alone in the hall to eat, to give you both a chance to get to know each other.
You allow your eyes to scan the hall. It has a bright spacious ambiance. The windows are stretched from the floor to the ceiling, allowing as much natural light inside. Singapore looks absolutely breathtaking down below. The flooring is made out of natural pine and a crystal chandelier hangs atop the table where you and Lando ate. You keep thinking: what if it'll fall? You shake the thought out of your head and put a fork full of pasta into your mouth.
“Is the pasta good?” Lando asks. You nod, humming and smiling. You don't like it one bit. You're also mildly allergic to shellfish. You're definitely going to get a bad case of rash later. You hope Jinnie is prepared with a medicine kit. You forgot to bring yours.
You wipe your mouth with your table napkin, announcing, “I’m full.”
You have only eaten half the plate.
“Oh you have a…” Lando points at the corner of his lips. You wipe the same area in your face. “No, the other side.”
You wipe the other side, “Is it gone?”
“Allow me,” he says, standing up from his chair and leaning across the table to thumb the stain.
“Is it gone?” you ask again. Lando nods.
“Yeah, it is.”
He goes back to his seat.
“Thank you,” you smile. “You're already doing great with the whole fake boyfriend act.”
A flustered smile splits Lando’s face, shaking his head.
“I try.”
“By the way,” you begin, leaning a little forward. “Did they also give you a folder with my information?”
Lando nods, “Yeah.”
“Did they also suck?”
He purses his lips.
“Well….” he drawls.
“You can tell me if it sucks. The one my manager gave me looks like it's copy-pasted from Wikipedia.”
Lando chuckles.
“I mean, your biography is very…detailed? Too detailed, I think. I didn't remember most of them, sorry. I only remember a few of them. Like your birthday. January 1, 2000.”
“1999.”
“Pardon?”
You wave your hand in a theatrical flourish, “I was born in 1999. The company manipulated my public information.”
Lando’s brows raise in surprise.
“They do that?”
“You’ll be surprised,” you lean back into your chair.
“But why?”
“So every member in ORACLE can be born in 2000. I don't know,” you shrug your shoulders.
“That seems like an unnecessary change.”
“It is,” you agree. “But HAN wants everything to be perfect. They see a flaw. They fix it to their liking immediately.”
“What are the other things that are a scam in your biography?”
“Scam is a big word,” you tell him, amused. “But I’ll tell you. In exchange, tell me about yourself. Not the info I can read in Wikipedia. In order to make this work, I have to know you.”
To be loved is to be known.
“Alright,” Lando says. “We can take turns asking each other questions.”
“Cool,” you bring a glass of water towards your lips, taking a sip. “I’ll start. How do you like your coffee?”

Job Roulette.. or Not: A Post about Alter Roles
Roles like Hosts? Protectors?.. maybe a Cleaner? an Academic?.. why is there an alter who comes out only for driving?! What about these other alters who don't really do much--they got to have one right??
--Are probably what you might be thinking when this topic comes up. But, there's something more into it,, it's not all about what job or how the role is assigned to an alter only.
Well, for this post, lets talk EVERYTHING about how roles work, what kinds exist, why it's there?? And especially, why are some more task specific, multi-role, or even... none? Bowl straight to the point, let's roll out. Haha punny
Ok J, spill. What are they?
Hold on. Im pulling out this dictionary definition of it--ah!
"defined positions that are associated with given responsibilities and are usually allocated according to the position or ability of each person."
To put it in system terms, it's how different parts can do something that others couldn't, or, feel a sense of responsibility in one particular aspect. That's making sense right? But oh.. you still want to know why they're there at the first place. Fine, follow me!
Yeah, show me why!
As aforementioned, this disorder boxes up our different parts of selves with amnesia and weaker bonds of connection which really sets us back on easing our 'modes' for different situations.. not only that, a part's moods and state/personality can greatly affect what kinds of jobs they get, it's not so random as you'd thought.
So, thing is, because some alters have a distinguished ability capable in doing something, depending what fragment or pre-existing knowledge/experience it holds, that can become it's very own job task.
They can be hereditary (upon split or formed), gained (fuse or passed traits), or even learnt (by its own commitment, without any prior skills). Roles come from many origins, and none of them are so different.
But, some are more complex..
I get it, some can have more than one, have ultra specific ones, or literally just don't have any. Now it makes you think--if it was from predisposed strengths each alters naturally have, then why are some more niche? or like, anything else? I know why:
Our brains are complex alright. We both can think maybe we can do (even if we don't like it) and not do something, and these are all compartmentalized in each alters, so basically its part feelings, part acceptance of such trait, and part commitment as the formula. Even confidence or the call to action affects this outcome!
This can apply to who can handle more than one jobs, or for those who are more specific or lesser known roles. In fact, roles do not have any limits, they are specifically tailored for your functionality so don't fret if you have an alter who's job is only to sleep, or anything else 'silly' !
What about the ones without.. roles?
Do you think it feels wrong to not have roles? While it is true that roles are needed, they're not actually a required standard for everyone to have a job task. Mainly, ANP's are the one who usually have roles, but EP's can too.
If they do not have a role, they might be disinterested or think they don't have any potential, or sometimes they're only there to hold memories / don't have the qualified skill sets, and thats okay! You can take proactive action in anyhow you'd like, just remember, every parts aren't forced to contribute, you know? It doesn't make them useless, maybe more on passive support/back ups.
I've also seen some systems who don't really have roles because the alters are all well-rounded, as in pick up other's tasks and that they're not assigned/compelled to do a particular job at all times, like being flexible. everyone's different!
Make sense, anything else?
Well, that we are not bound to roles, they do not define us, and that we can lose, or change roles according to our growth. Have anyone ever mentioned that?
Im aware that we tend to put too much emphasis on having jobs and being contributive, but the most important thing to keep in mind is that we all in this together, and to help each other, in a way or another.
Never forget that you're more than your job! Maybe try to enjoy other parts of life, yeah?
--
Thats the end of the post. What will you do if you find a new alter with no impressions of having a role? How do you see roles in your own pov? What's the first thing you'd do if you were to be free from your job task, if any? Feel free to let me know, i hope this has been informative, im willing to add anything if something's missing!

is there anything you wish youd known about DID-specific therapy before you started? sorry if thats weird or vague, i just finally have a therapist that treats DID and im both nervous and relieved about it, so i guess im just wondering if you have advice as someone who has made so much progress with your own DID
God yeah there is a lot honestly. Like there are a lot of general rules of thumb that I've seen get mentioned here that I can say are usually really good things I found to be mostly true in my experience like
Persecutors are frequently demonized and they can be INCREDIBLY hard to work with, but they are incredibly important, often are parts that are capable of having the most growth and tend to add the most to the system once you figure out a good way to communicate and work with them; that said, don't push anything you aren't capable of handling, if they are being too much, safety first; just remember that they're probably some of the best allies you can have should you make things work with them; there is little stronger bonds - both between parts and as a whole - formed when you can befriend and trust someone / the part of you that you've always hated / avoided. Loving persecutors is self love and self love is important for healing
While keeping track of your parts can be helpful, try not to obsess and fixate on trying to find all the parts and figure out when and where everyone came from. It can become overwhelming (especially if you have a lot of parts), you might find parts and things you aren't ready to deal with if you try to look too hard, and it can take away from the important processing, bonding, communication, and present issues you might be facing as a whole
Its okay to relapse on maladaptive behaviors, especially if it keeps you safe and/or from relapsing or starting potentially more risky / dangerous / harmful maladaptive behaviors. Two steps forward, one step back, it's still progress so try not to be hard on yourself. Struggling and fumbling is part of recovery, you aren't bad, or wrong, or uniquely "broken" or anything for struggling through recovery. Recovery is just fucking hard and engaging with it at all is a really amazing and powerful thing.
Integration =/= Fusion. Integration is just improving and increasing the communication, connectivity, and fluidity of information and coordination of parts. Integration is inherent in any form of DID treatment.
On top of that, I think some of the ones I don't see talked about as much would be...
Splitting, while often assumed to be a negative thing and a result of trauma (true and sometimes!), can be very healing when you look at it from a larger lens. This isn't to say that you should want to split or seek to make new alters as a coping mechanism, because I'd probably say in most situations that is probably not healthy. This is more so saying that if your brain wants to / needs to / does split, its okay to just let it happen. Trying to actively prevent splits can cause a lot of emotional / trauma overwhelm and risk crisis states and honestly, sometimes its easier to deal with two (or more) contained and stable parts than it is to deal with one complex and unstable part. Likewise, sometimes it is easier to be two (or more) contained stable parts than it is to exist as one complex and unstable part. Splitting sometimes - and often is - a mechanism to maintain stability and keep life for all parts within a relative "window of tolerance" that you can function in. Splitting isn't a moral failure or a recovery failure or anything special. Splitting is just part of the journey of recovery and a lot of people split after they start recovery cause it can be a pretty hard thing to go through. You aren't alone if this happens and it is just part of the process and journey.
Similar to that and something that we've been talking on this blog a lot and trying to spread...
Fusion does not have to be a final thing. Fusion does not have to be a huge and notable event. Fusion can last anywhere from a few minutes, to a few hours, to a few months, to forever depending on what works for you. If a fusion isn't working for you or isn't sticking, your brain will likely re-split and if it doesn't, you can always actively try to undo it and we've done it multiple times pretty successfully. Fusion ALSO isn't anything special, it's something that just happens. Fusion and splitting are two sides of the same coin and really aren't anything as permanent or anything that carries any inherent value to it beyond what it means to you as an individual / whole.
And probably one of the things that I was the most astonished by
You don't actually have to process all your trauma to be at a place with your DID where you are considered to be "in remission" or to even reach functional multiplicity / final fusion. A lot of the meat of DID-focused therapy and recovery and improvement to life is not as much in the trauma processing as much as it is in the stabilization period; that is just to say, the main meat of growth, recovery, and improvement is found by working with your parts to establish an internal support system, internal trust with one another, and deeply getting to know each of the parts. Of course, trauma processing will happen along the way, but you can get EXTREMELY far with recovery simplly by focusing on the stability of the system, how you each support and communicate and coordinate with one another, and dealing with the trauma topics that come up in the immediate present. A good way to think about it is that the stabilization period is essentially creating a strong foundation and a strong base so that you feel secure and confident navigating basic day to day life with a lot of internal love and support and the trust that you and your parts can support eachother through a SHIT ton of stuff. If you can develop an internal relationship with your parts and your system that is very strong and built on trust and care, then dealing with trauma and adversities become WAY easier. Thus it can be a lot easier to postpone any heavy trauma processing that is not actively relevant and actively necessary to help improve internal relationships until AFTER you have a stronger and more secure realtionship with your parts. Thus I would suggest focusing on the present issues, the things parts are feeling and experiencing in the moment, and addressing those rather than trying to uncover every secret and trauma that you may or may not remember. If the trauma is something you are ready to deal with and it's relevant, your brain will bring it up when the time is right. Trust your brain thats protected you thus far and kept you alive thus far to let you know things when you are ready to know it, but also don't be afraid to ask parts for help if it does share more than you are ready. That's just to say - Don't Dig for information you don't want to know, but if something comes up that you don't feel equipt to deal with, its completely okay to seek internal or external help to try leave it behind. Again, especially early on, the focus should be on stabilization rather than trauma processing.
And just a little small one about online spaces and what not, but try not to worry too much abotu whether your experiences with the disorder align with others, or if you look "fake" or what not. A lot of recovery will look like things people who don't know better would think is "impossible with DID" and online spaces tend to be a place where a false image of what things "should" look like is kind of developed. Whatever you experience is what you experience and is inherently a real and true experience. Don't try to force yourself to fit into the expectation and boxes of others as it will often slow down your progress.

more of the system!
some implied trauma and some depression below the cut
i read a bunch of two-face fanfic last night and now im like... should it just be a 3 person system? i loved how people wrote it like that so much. but all of these alters are so key in the story i could not remove them if i tried.
but, i still changed some stuff up. harvey and harv now have very good communication (pretty bad memory, only a fuzzy idea).
for harvey, besides being comforted by his alters in childhood (and recently but at that time he just thought they were emotions/intrusive thoughts) has very little communication with the system. besides parker and ruby, but its still not very strong.
harv just got here. hes scared as shit and deeply traumatized and angry. he feels like hes intruding on a life that isnt his. "if harvey had been stronger harv would have never been created". yeah its not great hes not doing great.
they form a begrudging alliance to become vigilantes (other alters are also down with this. either for wanting justice/revenge or to help others. some are unaware. its also not unanimous and theres lots of conflict. daniel splits from harvey to send messages between harvey+harv and the rest of the system. also just in general. hes like a negotiating errand boy).
they get caught, are deemed insane and sent to arkham. he works with both asshole therapists and really good ones, even a complex trauma specialist who was so good daniel split into emerald (an internal therapist) and shortly after her nameless physical protector. generally though arkham is extremely isolating and depressing and null fronts like 24/7. eris handles fights (somtimes with harv) E calms the body, briar helps them sleep and (NAMELESS) fights against the restraints.
even with bruce visting them its Awful and in the headspace they make an escape plan. and well. escape!

Tower Tarot System Headcanons (Mike & his system)
Under the cut are my detailed headcanons for mike, his backstory, and details about his alters. Note that i've changed some 'canon' stuff and added a few new alters.
TW: There will be mentions of Parental Abuse such as neglect and implied physical and emotional violence. There will be mentions of Sexual Abuse relating to Mike & Vito.
Keeper
• System Aware • One of the main Gatekeepers. More of a state of consciousness than an alter. Not sure how to explain it even as a system myself but basically more of a concept and a fragment? It is not really an alter that another alter could just come up to or interact with. • Was created by the horrid neglect and abuse endured at the end of the system's mother which from a young age made clear they would not be able to function without amnesic barriers separating states of consciousness/ego states.
Lucia:
• 5 - she/her - System Unaware, became dormant until Mike went to therapy. She then became system aware. • Alter i created for their system. Sarah is a child alter and technically the first host the system had but quickly became a rarely fronting part due to varying traumatic events between the ages of 3 and 5. Her age got frozen around 5 years old. She also stopped being host at that age after a harshly traumatic event. • System is unsure if there are other parts younger than her, she is the youngest identifiable host.
Chester:
• 56 - He/Him - System Aware - One of the gatekeepers • Split off around 4. • Introject of their grandpa on their mom side. Very important to Sarah and was very kind and took good care of the system.Their mom was incredibly neglectful and their grandpa is basically who raised them. Their mom cut contact with their grandpa after a fight between them. • Losing their grandpa alongside the constant abuse now worsening from being around their mother more did lead to a split. • Chester appears very grumpy because they found it funny whenever he would go on rambles and complain about silly things to them but also because they were hardly ever allowed to express negative emotions or frustration around their mother and so Chester became a part that held a lot of those negative emotions they didnt feel safe expressing.
Svetlana (Went by Lucia) :
• She/They - Ages with body - not quite system aware, notices things but very much normalizes them. Becomes system aware once Mike gets a girlfriend and also starts exploring gender. • Split off around 7 when their mom started signing them up for competitive gymnastics. (They were already doing gymnastics before, but competitive only started at 7). • Main cohost for a long time. Helped Sarah and Lola with learning gymnastics and handled competitions due to their mother being incredibly abusive during tournaments and competitions. • She wasnt really aware she was cohost, she felt like this was her life but she kinda saw it as like.. "oh i just feel more like myself in my element! Gymnastics is just really important to me and its where i thrive everybody say they have masks depending on if theyre at school or at home or with friends!! I guess my mask just comes off when im doing gymnastics :D". • She thought that the Russian accent was just a bit she was very dedicated to and what helped her 'get in character' for competitions. That it was just her trying hard to be like those russian gymnasts they really like on TV to feel more confident. • She always felt uncomfortable with being infantilized and felt much older, but everyone around them would say they have an old soul so she assumed that must by why. • She discovers she's a lesbian around when the body's age is 14. • She is one of the alters alongside Vito who causes Mike to realize something isn't adding up and reach out to try and get therapy. • Did not like Mike's girlfriend and actually really disliked being referred to as a guy. This was actually a main source of conflict between her and Mike and another reason Mike started feeling something was wrong because he realized that the dysphoria he got seeming more masculine or being perceived as more masculine didn't feel like it was Actually Him. • She often would be very distant and even cold to their girlfriend because she realized that they were a system and that she wasn't Mike and that actually his girlfriend was hurting them. • After therapy and system work and being acknowledged as her own alter, her relationship with Mike got a lot better and they agreed on keeping some feminine stuff for her to wear whenever she's front. • Actually really likes Zoey and tries really hard to hint that she also likes her. She and Zoey actually start dating too.
Lola (Went by Lucia):
• She/her - 10 - system unaware until she stopped being host. She became system aware when the body was 12 and that she got yonked and became more of an internal alter and very very rarely ever fronted again. She was under the care of Manitoba and Chester in the headspace. • Another system kid and previous host, she handled life from 6 to 12. • She and Svetlana were really fronting together almost all the time and switching between eachother frequently, although rarely experiencing blackouts more than greyouts. • While she was a host from ages 6 to 12, she stopped aging in the headspace at 10. • A huge part of this was due to how rocky elementary school was. They were changing schools left and right and it was really hard to keep up with all the constant changes. Around 10 she lost one of the only friends she had managed to make and due to their already fragile state, this was distressing enough to halt her development as an alter in itself. Svetlana mostly started being the main host from 10 to 12 although Lola was still there and at least cofront a majority of the time. • Starts fronting a bit more after Mike starts doing system work (Body age around 17).
Mike:
• He/They - Ages with body - First Host to become system aware. • Split off around 12 due to stress bcuz the system moved in with their dad because their mom no longer wanted to be responsible for them nor pay for their highschool necessities. • He became host because he didnt carry much of the traumatic memories related to their mom, didn't have system awareness, and was fairly functional with school and with their dad. • At first he had it a lot better than previous hosts and was one of the most stable host for a short while which made it that switching didn't frequently occur except here and there or when triggered due to x y z. • That changed about 8 months after him being host. A month before turning 13 he started figuring out that he had a crush on a girl and might be a lesbian. • Not only that but also started getting a lot of gender dysphoria, even feeling uncomfortable with a lot of his clothes and even pictures of him in his gymnastic outfits and competitions. • Nothing much came out of the crush except heartbreak which did kind of shake things up for the system. Mike felt things very profoundly and the heartbreaks of feeling like he would never find love because he likes girls destabilized the system a bit which led to more frequent switches- especially at school to continue functioning with the classmate mike had a crush on. • Around 14 Mike finds out more about things identity wise and starts thinking he might be a transmasculine butch lesbian, but isn't sure of himself because he feels his identity is very shaky and constantly changing so he settles on being genderfluid. (This confusion is mostly caused by Svetlana who also is discovering she's a lesbian btw). • At 15 is when the big bad happens for Mike. He gets his first girlfriend who happens to be older and more experienced than him. She sees him as a trans guy, even though he tries to explain he isn't. She is very forward and sexual to him, which freaks him out. She is constantly trying to see his chest and fetishize him especially when he's binding. • At 17 after a long time seeing a therapist due to the previous events, he found out he was a system and has been doing system work with his therapist for a year now. This is the same year he signs up for total drama.
Manitoba 'Jones':
• He/Him - 21 - System Aware • Split off around 13. • Introject of Henry 'Indiana' Jones from specifically 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles'. • Chose the name Manitoba to distance himself from his source, although he finds high comfort in it. • System Historian / Internal Helper. He also frequently takes care of the syskids and takes them on adventures in the headspace. • Very rare for him to fully front but he likes to come sit around front whenever anyone watches action movies. • Is actually the one that handled breaking up with Mike & Vito's girlfriend because neither of them felt like they could and when he figured out what was going on he got very protective.
Vito:
• He/Him but later on uses any - 18 - System Aware • Split off around 15 because of Mike's girlfriend of the time. • Split off as a sexual protector and hypersexuality symptoms holder. • Sexualizes himself a lot because it makes him feel in control and desired. Feels like because 'hes a guy' it means he has to like and enjoy it bcuz thats what a real man would feel. • Gets triggered front everytime anyone in the system loses their shirt because of it creating dysphoria and PTSD. • Was actually the most heartbroken when they broke up with their shitty ex girlfriend. He loved her a lot and saw himself as her boyfriend more than Mike did, even if he knew deep down she wasn't good to them. • Is the alter that, alongside Svetlana, made Mike realize something wasn't adding up and start talking to a psychologist and getting therapy. • Started unpacking a lot of his relationship but still holds a lot of the system's hypersexuality symptoms and has a weird relationship to gender as he feels like his 'gender' as a 'guy' is affirmed through having withstood their ex' abuse and 'enjoying' it. • He is actually nonbinary but it takes him a while to figure that out and only really figures it out AFTER total drama.
Mal:
• He/She/It - Ages With Body - System Aware • Persecutor/Misguided Protector. Split off during total drama all stars. • Mal split off with the belief that to win the game you have to be selfish and self preserving and manipulative. • He feels that Mike is "Too soft" and "Too kind" to survive let alone win the game. So he decides to play it by 'their rules'. A rule that Mal perceives to be the only way to make it through. • Due to splitting off with the belief of needing to replace Mike, she actually looks very similar to him in the headspace and while she doesn't like it she finds it very easy to imitate him and sees it as a way to protect the system by imitating Mike to win the show and get everyone away. • She thinks Mike is too 'naive' and 'trusting' and Mal sees that as a weakness others in the show will exploit and abuse so he decides to distrust everyone including the people who the rest of the system feel are safe like Zoey and Cameron. • It doesn't come from a serious place of malice more than a maladaptive coping strategy where Mal is in constant survival mode and unwilling to let his guard down in case the system gets hurt and he KNOWS that its bound to happen being part of total drama. • This is reinforced by the fact that Mal split off with memories concerning their ex girlfriend and knows how deceiving people can be, especially seeing how some of the people on the show have tons of red flags that reminds her of Mike & Vito's ex. • He tries to protect the system by constantly trying to force herself front and by betraying people and playing 'the villain' so that no one will hurt them and that they have more chances to win if they're the one to strike first and he lashes out and gets angry when the system calls him out for it because he doesn't understand why they dont see what he sees. • After a lot of therapy and help from the system and Zoey and Cameron, Mal unpacks and unlearns a lot of the harmful ideas she split off with and also starts exploring herself outside of 'Total Drama'. A lot of her identity is tied as 'Mike's only hope to survive total drama' and its a lot for her to work through. • She gets on much better terms with Zoey later on, but it does take a very long time to build up that trust between them even if Zoey understands where Mal was coming from.

Disabled system culture is being 90% sure weve split several pain managers and/or alters BECAUSE of our pain and dont know who tf they are!!!!!
we have this. we very randomly find out “oh shit this guy can handle pain so much better” out of circumstance. im one of these people. i havent been around in a WHILE but lo and behold im managing to do dishes and clean the house after a 6 hr shift on my feet.

Heyy, so how many alters were before final fusion? And Ik this next question will probably sound pretty stupid, but would you say that after final fusion it'd be the same as someone who's been "whole" their whole life or there is diferences?
(Also im terrible with wording so if I did say something wrong, please correct me! I didn't mean any evil, truly)
These are great questions, thanks for asking!
Due to the nature of transient "fragment" alters, I don't have a clear answer for "how many". On plurality I had over 90 documented, but by the time we started to fuse and heal some of those had likely already dissipated and came back in other ways (ex. an alter that splits during a stressful grocery trip or work altercation ceases to be shortly afterwards and dissipates back into the system at large, but the next time an altercation happens a similar fragment splits to handle the stress again)
so I would say 90-150. we know there was a layer with several uncontacted alters, I only ever met one of those alters (who burst through the layer very symbolically in therapy, and proceeded to stop the session so she could write a song. yes she was a taylor swift factive, which was hilariously in character lmao.) and the rest of those alters in the layer fused behind the scenes. I never recovered any specific memories from that, but I kinda just "know" they existed nevertheless!
I am not the same as someone who never developed DID/OSDD. I may be "single" now, but I still consider myself to be a system, just a fused one. I can remember what it was like to be separate, and still use that as a coping strategy occasionally (ex. thinking of an alter that existed for chores and at home tasks to bring motivation and clarity when I'm struggling to keep on task, can help me manage those tasks). I am also still capable of splitting and dissociation, something someone without these disorders would not do. I have split a few of those aforementioned fragment type alters, but now rather than lasting a few weeks or days they typically only last an hour. the threshold for splitting is also so much higher than before, it takes an extreme amount of stress piled on top of eachother, rather than just one event. A lot of the "splits" are so minimal I also don't realize until after it has dissipated back into me again.
I also still age slide in times of stress! it's similar to how singlets do agere, but at least for me it's involuntary and feels more like a cofronting little (that has no other different traits aside from being a more vulnerable EP type). it feels more akin to CPTSD EP parts (secondary structural dissociation, non elaborated non autonomous) rather than a full alter or system thing, but I'd still say it differentiates me from a typical singlet.
I hope these answered your questions!

id like to say - no pressure if you dont want to answer this. completely fair, i get it. plus this might be incoherent bc its like two am and i have a migraine LMAO
im curious - and just to clarify, this question is coming from another system(haii its cross/x (and roxie!!), weve talked before -w-) - what are your thoughts on plural vanessa/vanny? like, any form. vanessa is plural prior and a headmate is manipulated by glitchtrap. vanny is her headmate (‘reformed’? still messed up?) post-sb. vanessa forms headmates post-sb. glitchtrap is her headmate. etc.
like, do you dislike them due to vanny being evil in-game? do you prefer them if they exclude vanny, or any ‘evil’ headmates? do you like them only if vanny reforms? etc etc, you can go into your own detail, im just trying to think of questions that might make it make a bit more sense, lol.
again no pressure im just thinking abt them and thought yall might have some thoughts -w-
Hi Cross (and Roxie)!! Sorry for the late ass response lmao- y'know how it goes, but I've gotten to it now.
I personally have conflicting thoughts on plural Vanny/Vanessa. Thing is, I think Vanessa is in the position to have formed a system given how she describes her childhood. I think that her being plural prior to the “vannification” as I call it is a good start, but ultimately my big concern- and one I do have while writing Vanny- is that when it simulates or is a mental illness, it pins those symptoms as dangerous or causing violence. That being said, I also feel that there are good ways about it.
Her being an actual system and not becoming one because of Glitchtrap helps. One mistake a lot of people make is making Glitchtrap almost.. "give" her DID.
As for how I think it would work best, I would say something probably akin to my own writing of Vanny, which isn’t me boasting, just that that’s how I think Vanny works best. Basically, I would say that maybe not just one headmate gets manipulated but the whole system, and Vanny is a headmate that split/formed to cope with their situation through a complete and total disconnect from and desensitization to what they’re being made to do. I think that the idea of Vanny being just an “evil alter ego” is a problem for me, and this interpretation (as well as my own writing of her- V.A.N.N.Y- where the V.A.N.N.Y. mask serves as a manufactured persona that serves the purpose of letting Valerie pretend that she’s not herself so she can cope with the fact that she feels she has no choice but to do this) kind of clears that up for me. Bc ultimately alters are people too and portraying them as just the evil ones rubs me the wrong way. So instead of Vanny just being the evil alter ego that people usually write her as when using the DID path, making her an actual alter who has a purpose that’s important to the system and stems from their situation is more realistic and respectful imo.
I think that system!Ness & Vanny would see Vanny being most like a secondary host, fronting to handle the things that Glitchtrap is making them do to provide Vanessa and the others with a mental barrier that allows them to cope with it, with Vanny herself being formed to be detached and apathetic so she can get the job done. Having Vanny as a headmate then be still sympathetic, still redeemable and still a victim of that same abuse clears up a lot of the problems imo, and doesn't paint Ness being a system as the reason for the murders.
That's the route I personally would go- Vanessa is plural prior and Vanny is split thanks to Glitchtrap's abuse to cope. As for the other ones you suggested, I'll run thru my thoughts on those fast too bc genuinely I love plural characters and this concept does have a lot of potential.
Vanessa is plural prior and a headmate is manipulated by Glitchtrap- not too unlike "Vanny splits thanks to Glitchtrap". Has similar potential to me. Vanny is an alter who maybe handles that kind of situation thanks to their dad, which unfortunately places her in Glitchtrap's way. Very cool. Also keeps Vanny feeling realistic and sympathetic.
Vanny is her headmate post-sb- could go either way. I think that Vanny having kind of a slow redemption post-sb as she's released from Glitchtrap's hold and has to find her footing again is interesting, and Vanny being Vanessa's headmate could work for that.
Vanessa forms headmates post-sb- not realistic, however, I do like the idea. Again, it comes from my whole "Vanny is a persona made to distance Vanessa from her crimes" thing. That could form into an alter, if you consider her being "possessed" and how that might fuck with her mind long term. I like this. I really don't mind a bit of well meaning fantasy/sci-fi writing of systems, in fact I think they're fun!
Glitchtrap is her headmate- this is the one I have a problem with, akin to a simple "Vanny is Vanessa's evil serial killer alter". It makes the villain- the murderer- Vanessa's headmate, and by proxy the danger her plurality yk?
In general, I like the idea of well-meaning and informed system Vanessa interpretations, and Vanny being a headmate, but I get picky about the execution. I only like them if Vanny is treated as sympathetic or redeemable, since I think that minimizes the risk of "evil DID" narratives and treats them rather as survivors of abuse who've done really fucking wrong because of it.
This is a lot to take in but that's my thoughts! Thanks for the ask :]

in the wake of the Abuse in Care report, i want to share my own story
for context, i am a young kiwi. im autistic and adhd, and struggle with violent meltdowns.
tw for all sorts of abuse
a few years ago, my meltdowns got very severe. i was dangerous. i got sent to the psychward 3 times. the first 2 times were scary, but i was okay.
the 3 third time nearly killed me.
i was 13 and they didn't have any spaces left, so they put me in a solitary confinement area of the asylum. yes, modern psychwards are insane asylums. if you had a good experience at one you are an exception. the wall were concrete and my room had a small outdoor area attached that was lined with barbed wire. the toilet did not flush. i was not allowed out, except for a few times when i was allowed to see the other inmates.
i was trapped for 11 days. i still remember exactly what date it was. i called my mum every day. neither of us knew if we would ever see each other again. i had been kidnapped by the state. i was fed green sludge and something that may have been extremely dry and cracked fish or chicken. this was my only meal i regularly got. getting breakfast was a hit n miss.
on day 9 i snapped. i tried to hit a nurse and my punishment was to be strangled half to death. i couldn't breathe. they nearly dislocated my shoulder. my vision turned black. i vaguely recall being injected with a sedative.
when i have flashbacks i can feel the physical pain again. it feels like my arms are being torn off.
i only went back home when my mum showed up, unauthorised, and demanded to bring me home. i never thought i would see my family again.
something i didnt mention earlier, i am medically recognised with a complex dissociative disorder. im not sure if that big traumatic event caused my alters or if Doc had already existed, but it certainly split my sense of self to some degree. Doc saved our life. Daniel, the alter who presents as the original, could not handle existence. after the psychward, my system almost achieved final fusion. Daniel went dormant. Doc was the only alter. later that month a new alter split and it took 4 months for Daniel to return.
afterward my horrible psychiatrist with the tiny shorts decided that my meltdowns were because of my adhd, which has been successfully treated since i was 4. he put me on ritalin, despite my bad history with it. ritalin gave me a panic attack that lasted 3 days without stopping. my mum immediately took me off it as soon as she noticed the heightened anxiety. a microdose of magic mushrooms of all things, cured my anxiety for a week while also treating my adhd while i had no adhd meds, so do with that what you will (mushies may have saved my life).
i already had a traumatic life, and the asylum was the hammer that finally shattered my cracked mind. i never really had a sense of self, no individuality, so its no wonder i have OSDD.
the trauma didn't stop there.
couple years later i ended up in E Puni, a jail for children who cant live with their families. i mean it when say jail. concrete walls and floors, cameras everywhere, doors that cant be opened from inside, stale food. i cant eat a lot of thing due to being autistic, so i starved. they did not not accommodate my needs.
i had another meltdown, so i got violently picked up and literally thrown onto a concrete floor in solidarity confinement. water all over the floor. i dissociated so much i could barely stand. for some reason they didn't take my belt so i tried to hang myself.
they damaged the nerves in my left arm when they threw me. i couldn't use my arm for 3 months, and when i explained why i was struggling with arm strength, they said i was faking nerve damage. i thought i would be permanently disabled. thank god it was temporary. i was forced to participate in being around screaming teenagers who made sounds i cant handle because of sensory processing disorder. some of those poor kids had been there for 5 years.
the only 2 staff there who cared for me left because they couldn't handle seeing the organized abuse the children went through. i couldnt take it either.
im in a different place now, though still in state care. its been rough, but here its only bad if i have meltdowns.
as for the cops, the most notable thing theyve done is tell me that they "can restrain [me] without reason".
if anyone ever asks why i am an anarchist, this is why.

this really didnt have anything to do with syscourse im just really upset and wanted to yap about it. ok so about last november we had a very rough syscovery, then last march it was finally starting to look up again. i had some really close friends and i was pretty much inseparable from one of them- even though we dont have a headspace. we fronted a lot together. anyway, last april something really extremely very fucked up happened and almost every active alter (including myself) went dormant. the only guy who was left for awhile was my friend, and then there were some new splits with him, but then something else fucked up happened and he went dormant (and he was our #1 protector and my best friend). and now im back. i hate it. everyone i know is gone. right now my brain is just throwing alters into front for weeks because we dont have enough active alters to handle anything. high split tolerance sucks :(
im not specialized for the type of situations my friend handeled. my job is to make sure people dont feel too bad about us being a system. ive been fucking everything up because i dont like going places (he does) and people are upset and they miss us. im so anxious and hes not at all. ok thank you.

favorite lines from "THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT"
your wife waters flowers, i want to kill her
All my mornings are monday stuck in an endless february
but you're in self-sabotage mode, throwing spikes down the road
we're modern idiots
You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate
i scratch your head, you fall asleep, like a tattooed golden retriever
sometimes i wonder if you're gonna screw this up with me, but you told lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave
'cause it fit too right, puzzle pieces in the dead of night, I shouldve known it was a matter of time
'cause i knew too much, there was danger in the heat of my touch, he saw forever so he smashed it up
did you really beam me up?, in a cloud of sparkling dust, just to do experiments on, tell me I was the chosen one, showed me that this world is bigger than us, then sent me back where I came from
now im down bad crying at the gym, everything comes out teenage petulance, "fuck it if I cant have him", "I might just die, it would make no difference"
how dare you think its romantic, leaving me safe and stranded
my spine split from carrying us up to the hill, wet through my clothes, weary bones caught the chill
thinking how much sad did you think I had, did you think I had in me? oh the tragedy
i stopped cpr, after all its no use
two graves, one gun, ill find someone
you swore that you loved me, but where were the clues? i died on the alter waiting for the proof
i just learned these people try and save you 'cause they hate you
id rather burn my whole life down than listen to one more second of all this bitchin' and moanin', ill tell you something 'bout my good name, its mine along with all the disgrace, I don't cater to all these vipers dressed in empire's clothing
there's a lot of people in town that I bestow upon my fakest smiles
my friends tried, but i wouldn't hear it, watched me daily disappearing, for just one glimse of his smile
another summer, taking cover, rolling thunder, he doesnt understand me, splintered back in winter, silent dinners, bitter, he was with her in dreams
little did you know you home's really only a town youre just a guest in
florida, is one hell of a drug, florida, can I use you up?
little did you know your home's really only the town youll get arrested, so pack your life away just to wait out the shitstorm back in texas
i need to forget, so take me to florida, ive got some regrets, ill bury them in florida, tell me I'm despicable, say its unforgivable, at least the dolls are beautiful, fuck me up, florida
go on, fuck me up
this cage was once just fine, am i allowed to cry?
what if hes written "mine" on my upper thigh only in my mind?
these fatal fantasie given way to laboured breath taking all of me, weve already done in my head
what if the way you hold me is actually whats holy?
they dont know how youve haunted me so stunningly, i choose you and me, religiously
if you wanted me dead you shouldve just said
crash the party like a record crash as i scream, "whos afraid of little old me?", you should be
i wanna snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me, you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me
you caged me and then you called me crazy, i am what i am 'cause you trained me, so whos afraid of me?
they shake their heads saying, "god, help her" when i tell 'em hes my man
ill show you heaven if youll be an angel, all mine
whoa, maybe i cant
i thought i was better safe than starry-eyed
if you know it in one glimpse, its legendary, you and i go from one kiss to getting married
you shit-talked me under the table, talking rings and talking cradles, i wish i could unrecall, how we almost had it all
youre the loss of my life
the lights refract sequin stars off her silhouette every night, i can show you lies
'cause im a real tough kid, i can handle my shit, they said "babe, you gotta fake it till you make it" and i did
lights, camera, bitch, smile, even when you wanna die
im so depressed, i act like its my birthday everday
'cause im miserable (haha), and nobody even knows, try and come for my job
and i dont even want you back, i just want to know, if rusting my sparking summer was the goal
you didnt measure up in any measure of a man
in fifty years will all this be declassifed?, and ill say, "good riddance"
i wouldve died for youre sins, instead i just died inside
so when i touch down, call the amateurs and cut 'em from the team
'cause the sign on your heart said its still reserved for me, honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?
he jokes that "its heroin, but this time with an E"
you look like clara bow
this town is fake but youre the real thing, breath of fresh ait through smoke rings
the crowd goes wild at her fingertip, half moon shine, a full eclipse
youre the new god were worshipping, promise to be dazzling
beauty is a beast that roars down on all fours demanding more
you look like taylor swift, in this light, were loving it, youve got edge, she never did, the futures bright, dazzling

were sick of the incorrect yet widely pushed theory behind DID - you know the one- "DID develops because when youre severely abused as a child you consciously dissociate, consciously block memories, and your alters are based on your imaginary friends!" our host loses all feeling of validity and feels like theyre faking every time they hear: •you are aware of your trauma as the host when youre a child and you said to yourself "i hate this. it scares me. i dont feel safe. im gonna make an imaginary friend to deal with this" (which is a myth, were talking about toddlers here dissociating and theyre not smart enough to do it consciously yet)
"the failure to integrate memories is a conscious thing! the host isnt able to process the distressing memory so they develop alters based on pretending the distressing memory didnt happen! " this beats the whole purpose of DID- to hide the memories from the host who will never know they were abused until years later.
"if you had DID youd have memories of being scared, feeling unsafe, and not be bubbly or feel happy at all because thats how ptsd works" (its not, all trauma related disorders come with dissociation which being numb, which can be mistaken by a small child for being happy, is a part of dissociation. and most people with DID report having mostly neutral or happy memories of their childhood but thats because of dissociative barriers hiding the trauma.)
these are all myths based off the fantasy model of DID- before the theory of structural dissociation, psychologists thought people were born with a whole personality that splits because the person cant handle their trauma, and that imaginary play (pretending the trauma didnt happen consciously, putting the trauma on imaginary friends) was how alters developed. which is false- DID develops for survival which means the host knows none of their trauma until theyre out of the situation, and the other alters are there to defend the body and hold memories. for DID to work the host cant consciously block memories at 3, consciously create alters at 4, or be aware theyre in a traumatizing situation until theyre out of that situation.
so if any other DID systems come across this misinformation dont believe it. if you only have happy childhood memories thats how DID works for many. your brain did what it needed to survive and thats a complex thing thats different for every system.

Heya. Just wanted to see if you have any advice for a polyfragmented system really struggling with feeling fake bc of splitting a lot of alters at once? Pur host is so super distressed because he feels Like we are subconsciously faking DID or twisting symptoms of another health issue to fit being a system.
Some encouragement or advice would be greatly appreciated.
--wildwood and co
Well, im going to say that everyone don’t have the same tolerance in handling stress (usually the cause of splits and whatnot) and that makes perfect sense because everyone has their own little spectrum, which includes you. Be it a person who is at the lowest spectrum possible, the middle, or the highest,, people who have yet tried to accept the way it is tend to say things like “it’s not bad enough” or “it feels bad enough that it looks fake because I don’t think it works that way” with no end.
Trying to justify by saying it’s fake, it’s not bad, it’s something else,, might make you end up a bit worser than where you had started because this feeling you have in your gut that just doesn’t sit right with all of those doubts and people’s experiences is still in there scuffing you in and out. Convincing ourselves that we’re faking an illness also doesn’t make the illness go away because if we really ARE faking it would’ve just went away.. as we wished. And that’s what is keeping us in a spiral.
Now i know this doesn’t feel like a positive encouragement but nevertheless im trying to say what’s the truth in the best way, minimum sugar coating, straight to the point and got some good answers. Some people don’t like it covered in glitter especially me, but people do like advices unlike something that’s taken out of google, so im writing three steps for you here;
Acceptance: first off, most important, try to stop denying it (thinking its fake) and see what happens. It feels bad for a moment, but it makes you a bit free doesn’t it? Let me tell you mine: i kept convincing myself i am all fine, all good, im a good person im not bad,, those things and the next second it contradicts itself every 5 fucking seconds. Because everyone isn’t immune to problems, neither about not percieved as a bitch in someone’s eyes because there’s always those people who hates peaches even if you taste the best. And when i started telling myself i have some bad parts it feels like seeing in a new perspective of the situation.
2. Grey thinking: acceptance is the first step to eliminating most of the problems we have be it denial and whatnot. But if you still think in extremities that will push you down the hole hard, we need to comprehend the middle area, again using my anecdote before where i scale myself either “bad” and “good”,, that seem so hard to comprehend and categorize the real perspective so by having the middle, as “i am good because i care about people and im also bad because i tend to be selfish” really puts me on a sweet spot where i don’t get distressed and tunnel vision. Now we are closer to being healthier in thinking.
3. Profit!: once we got the self acceptance and grey thinking down, we got ourselves an easy way to prevent another relapse of thoughts (the “oh god am i faking?!”). This is where people can have a better time using their mental capacity for healing the damaging mindset or learning how to cope better (splitting less) and i call that a win. Last advice is that we should never give this monster the food it wants (your negative thoughts to spiral down) so sometimes we can just ignore it, what gives,, im a bad person? Probably in a temporary moment all good. And it’ll actually go away by itself, with every thoughts easier to handle.
With a decent amount of practice, this shall no longer be a problem, so go get ‘em tiger.

Dude. Have you ever developed James' parents? Does he have them? Does Jacob have parents? (also feel free to idk delete this if you wanna answer me in a more private setting lol)
HOW DID I MISS THIS IM SO SORRY
Not used to getting notifications here so I completely missed that you sent this
44 days what have I done,,, aksbakbdjd
I haven’t given tons of development to James’ family, but he does have parents that play a part in life (as parents tend to do). I was debating on giving him a sibling, but idk I also like the idea of him being a single child.
He has good parents, nice to him, took care of him, gave him love and such. But he’s always been a bit of an outcast. Most of James’ own interests are very separated and hard to really connect with them. His own indecisiveness also leads to a lot of disconnect. With James parents very displeased with how he just skating through life why wherever the wind takes him. James is a pathetic wet beast of a man, and is honestly someone who’s rather be told what to do rather than make his own decisions. All of the decisions he does make end up being very rash and on the fly as a result. This compared to his parents who are the hard working confident type leads to a lot of disagreement on where James’ life is going. (I am also still deciding if I want James to be still living with his parents or out on his own. To be decided)
The parents themselves are just nameless entities atm, but I’ll be giving them some personality. They do play a big role in James’ self questioning, and thusly Jacob’s own freedom with what James will let him get away with without bending some rules.
As for Jacob, he technically doesn’t. Jacob was just created by the fantasy land when James grew proper conscious thought, around 6 to 7 years old. It’s a bit strange, because James’ own family does have their alters in this world, who by proxy created Jacob. What makes it confusing is that James doesn’t see himself when he fantasizes, he sees someone dramatically different than himself. Cause truthfully, James doesn’t want to be himself. But his parents don’t see him as this bigger set sexy dude, they see their real skinny little man.
What happened is that, when James started splitting off from Jacob, Jacob in turn had a “split” himself, giving their parents the James they know instead of the the man James wishes for. (Jacob does end up going through a second split later down the line, though that split is forced onto him and has a lot more complications to go with it). This concept of a person splitting mainly applies to alters who are so far apart from their main that they wouldn’t be recognized at all in their own minds. So while Jacob doesn’t have biological parents, he does have the next closest thing. Though Jacob doesn’t like visiting James’ family alters. Cause all Jacob sees are two assholes who are fucking up his special man.
This is all a wip, because I am just realizing how messy family connections are between alters who are wildly separated from their human. Jacob’s lore about his family may change in the future if I think of a better way to handle it. But in short: Jacob largely avoids any family he may or may not have out of spite/James just not being well connected to his own family

nothing nothing nothing nothing
nothing will fucking matter
its always back to this
reset inertia
i am a child
i am a bug
lonely and scared and running
not understanding
but i live in a place with food and comfort
and i never have to starve
but soon i will
soon ill crash the car
i push it further every time
i test the grip of my shitty wheels
it barely steers straight now
and i hope just a little that itll be enough
that one day ill die quick
that ill die in the winter when its nice out
that my death will mirror the reddening leaves
that someone somewhere will write a eulogy
someone who really knows me
thats the only honor i can have
is in death
and its exhausting to try to convince me
im running ragged girl
i love my friends but im dying im rotting
i love my friends but id never be my friend
id never put myself through that
i give myself the ick
i see all the horrible things in my head
the water im apt to drown in
it goes and goes and goes
i breathe and try to find
the lightswitch in the dark
i pretend i can see
i want to memorize the walls
the stuff on the floor i must avoid
i want to test myself on bullshit standards
i want to count the things in my hand
or remember something meaningless
to prove to myself that im smart
that i deserve anything good
its just a proxy
i consume myself with adjacency
to avoid the pale want
the brightest flame
i move it aside
and let it burn itself out
because i cant handle that rawness
when i get a touch of it i cry for ages
i dont know what to do with all this nothing
ive thought and cried and paced the carpet
ive fallen asleep thinking
ive stayed awake thinking
wondering how my parents will die
not since i was a kid but
its still there
its woven together somehow
every line parallel
every alter parallel
never touching hardly touching
vaguely related as if
as if it were consecutive tv channels
we cannot think much like this
we only have a corner at a time
a piece
we cant stitch it all together
and i never learned to sew anyway
i thought it was for girls (ha)
funny how you become the thing you fear
but for me it was always guilt
not when i was young but once i grew a little
i knew i was not supposed to be like this
i understood well what was expected
and i saw it in the other kids faces
that i was always different
that i didnt know how to talk
how to look them in the eye
and i never knew i would suffer so much
back then i was more creative
i drew in my notebooks
i thought things up
but i split my head and i dont know why
it seems like my issues were unfounded
but i think i underestimate it
im not sure
