You ever think about how Mihawk definitely does not hear his name alot?

Like there are probably only 2 people in the entire world that consistently refer to him by name. To the rest of the world he’s just an epithet. He might as well have no real name for as little as he hears it.

He’ll hear it at introductions always preface by his epithet, he’ll see it in the bounty posters and notice it in the history books. But barely anyone will ever calm him that. Just a pink headed ghost girl and the red headed half of the most complicated situationship panning 20 years.

You ever think about how Shanks probably has a thousand and one nicknames for Mihawk he cycles through at a whim but maybe Mihawk’s favorite will always be the soft way in which Shanks calls out his given name like that’s all there is too it like there’s a Mihawk that exists all on its own. No matter the situation Shanks calls him Mihawk and he has his full attention

Okay, my brain refuses to think about anything other than Murderbot, so I looked at every use of the word "friend[s]" in TMBD and... created some pie charts. Normal human activities.

Some Thoughts™ I had while putting this together (under the cut):

In All Systems Red, Murderbot notes that the PresAux crew are all close friends (twice! and goes on to explain their internal relationships which I think is very cute). This is pretty much the only use of 'friends' in ASR, except for when Murderbot says that SecUnits can't be friends with each other.

It seems that this may be one of the first times Murderbot has ever really been around a group of friends before? Murderbot notes that this is not the norm for its contracts and admits that the fact that they are all friends and the way they interact with each other make it actually enjoy that contract (before!!!! the hostile attack, so it already enjoys this contract before they start seeing it as a person etc ghghhhh). [Inference: Friendship seems enjoyable.]

The first character that calls Murderbot its friend is ART in Artificial Condition. Murderbot immediately refutes this (and then goes on to call ART its friend to its clients for the rest of the book). [Inference: Maybe ART is Murderbot's friend. And maybe that is... agreeable]

Rogue Protocol has more than twice as many instances of the word 'friend' as any of the other novellas. Why? Miki. Friendship and its implications for non-humans are a central theme because Miki is friends with everyone. Murderbot initially scoffs at the notion that Miki and Miki's humans are friends. At the end of the book, after witnessing how desperately Don Abene tried to stop Miki from trying to save them, and her grief after its death, Murderbot has to admit that she had in fact been Miki's friend. [Inference: Humans can be friends with bots and can sincerely care about them]

In Exit Strategy, Murderbot tentatively uses the word "friends" for its humans for the first time (several times actually). It questions whether it can actually call them its friends or not and later realizes that it had been afraid what admitting that the humans are its friends would do to it. At the end of the book, Mensah tells Murderbot the PresAux crew are its friends, which is the first time a human has directly said that to it (at least on-page). [Inference: Humans can and want to be Murderbot's friends]

In Network Effect, Murderbot seems to be more habituated to the word 'friend', confidently calling ART and Ratthi its friends, like it is no longer just trying the concept on unsure if it fits. There are many instances in which other characters refer to MB as ART's friend or the other way around and Murderbot's humans refer to Murderbot as their friend several times. Generally, there seems to be less hesitancy, because yes, all of them are Murderbot's friends, why wouldn't they be. [Inference: SecUnits can have friends. This SecUnit has friends. They care about it a lot.]

Conclusion: The Murderbot Diaries tell the story of a construct that does not seem to consider the possibility of friendship for itself and is fine with that - until it accidentally starts caring a little too much and suddenly more and more people annex it as a friend (ew) to the point where it can no longer deny that this is happening and has to begrudgingly admit that yes, it has friends now and maybe that is actually not a bad thing.

Her name is Jeannie, and she’s a half vampire on her dad’s side. Other than her appearance, vampirism hasn’t really affected her life that much, she just has to deal with a mild garlic allergy and getting sunburnt real easy. She also ages a tad slower than a normal person, but she does still age

made a pie chart of asoiaf dragon colors bc I was curious about it ^_^ my verdict is asoiaf is severely lacking in cool dragon designs why's there so much grey/brown/green I need more prettygirls. (I based this off of the books/grrm's descriptions, so vhagar is counted as bronze and vermax is undescribed even tho they're green in hotd. also quicksilver is technically undescribed but I counted her as silver bc of the name)

The thing that gets me every time is at Nibelheim when Sephiroth disappoints everyone:

While everyone else tells Sephiroth some version of “I looked up to you”,

Zacks tells Sephiroth “I trusted you”.

For most Sephiroth was a goal, a lofty standard to live up to, but Zacks thought he was a friend, a guy he worked with, someone he could trust his back to.

Sephiroth didn’t disappoint him by being less than perfect he disappointed him by breaking his trust

I'm not saying world domination is a particularly worthy goal, but literally what else can one aspire to beyond this given the unbelievably restrictive rules of that universe? this is a world conceived to be a hierarchy, and stay one, by design!! Nayru's domain, Wisdom's domain, is literally Natural Rules, and Farore's, Courage, is to create life that can abide by these rules. It's in the very cutscene that introduces them as a mythological concept!!

So if you're unlucky enough to be casted as "one of the bad ones that aren't blessed sorry :/" either you wall yourself in a cave and live your life lowly and miserable, hoping no hero will come break all of your pots while you're out picking up wood, or you take your only reasonable shot at making significant change for yourself. Like what else do you do in such a conservative world??? attempt to build diplomacy, when your entire race is being considered evil thieves inherently, and when you're incredibly underpowered and with nothing of worth to offer your neighbors?? like what is one poor poor gerudo king meant to do :(((((

Just thinking about Luthien telling young Dior about the quest for the Silmaril and all that she and his father went through to be together. And Dior just gets so hung up on his mother's confinement in Nargothrond. He knows that Celegorm wrote to his grandfather with his intentions to marry his mother, and he knows what that means for elves, and while Luthien does not go into detail of her imprisonment it is still disturbing to Dior.

Thoughts of what could have happened in Nargothrond linger with Dior, like something lurking behind him. He goes to his father and demands to know why Beren did kill the wretched elves when he had the chance. Dior says he would have, without hesitaion for the elves to had captured his mother in such a way.

It does not happen often, but when the opportunity arises, Dior is sure to tell his mother that he would defend her and when he is old enough to go adventuring away from home and should, by chance, happen upon those sons of Feanor he will slay them, so that she may never worry about them again.

Hearing Dior speak in such away does make Luthien worry, in fact. Her son grown so concerned with the wrongs of the past, to the point that he actively plans to put himself in danger over trying to settle them. This cannot stand.

So Luthien takes Dior to swim in the river and afterwards tries to impart on him the same peace she has gained. Yes, it was scary at the time. But importantly, nothing happened. And more importantly, worrying about what could have happened is not worth the pain and fear Dior is putting himself though. Celegorm and his brother do not live in Luthien's mind, yea she has no thoughts of them at all. Their presence in her life was like a grain of dust on the wind. And so it should be Dior too. His feelings are important but he must learn to take some and cast them to the wind, to be blown harmlessly way, leaving only peace in his mind. As she has.

And with time, he does.
